A couple of ideas: 1. Best desiccant? Cat litter, silica, something else? I've seen some comparisons, but not a detailed one. 2. Best oil absorbent when working on boats and cars? Cloths, sand, oil absorbing mats 3. Most efficient coolant? (if you haven't already) Inc those water-free ones.

@@ProjectFarm a good test I would like to see on the topic of Oil absorbent cat litter/sand would be a simple pour and sweep. you spill some oil, pour the product on, wait for a set amount of time say 15-20min then sweep. to limit variables you could also pour the same amount of oil and same amount of oil absorbent. Another good test would be with a clear container put a set amount of oil and top it off with absorbent then let it sit 24 hours and measure how far up the oil was absorbed. Thank you for all your hard work we all appreciate it!

A little tip I learned from a buddy with a bike restoration business: Gojo Orange hand scrub can be used as a rust remover for chrome steel parts. When I was a kid i had a little bottle of orange hand cleaner that went on as a paste and as you rubbed it it dried out, beaded up and fell off your hands leaving them dry and clean without a rag. I've been searching for that mystery hand cleaner for more than 15yrs since. I think recently I had an epiphany that the cleaner was probably ordinary gojo or fastorange, but from a bottle so old it had started drying out. I don't know for sure. I've tried a few experiments mixing gojo with pva glue because glue tends to bead up in the same way. That sort of worked similarly to how I remember but dried a little slowly for my liking. The search continues.

I used gojo for years and then I switched to fast orange for a very long time. After that I heard about tuba towels. I've used it for I think about 5 years now and I have never looked back. I keep them in all my rides that I do work with The fact that you can just wipe your hands off, leaving nothing behind and jump right back in your ride. Not worrying about transfer of whatever you had on your hands to your vehicle is so convenient. They also stay in my shop permanently and under my sinks in my home. One thing you completely over looked is that some of the hand cleaners don't work well on cold hands, or wet hands. I was once responsible for procuring supplies for an Air Force maintenance shop. GoJo was my go-to hand cleaner, and I would give other people a hard time who preferred Zep’s “Cherry Bomb”. My strong preference was mostly a joke, but I am excited to see the actual results!

I wrench General Aviation, have for many years. Palmolive and borax, mixed in the hands, add water, agitate briskly. Nail brush if leaving the hangar. Rinse (water is necessary) . To remove 5606 Hyd oil (very simular to ATF) I will cheat and use a chem (gojo) hand cleaner to start. I've tried a lot of variations and this works. Cheap as well, It don't take much.

A haaaaaaa. HAND CLEANER!!!!! Nice one. There's a little-known but life-changing bit of advice someone once gave me on day 1 as a 16-year-old trainee car mechanic, and that was how best to clean your hands at the end of every day in as careful a way as you can by inflicting as little damage as possible to your skin on a daily basis. He was an old boy, much older than usual retirement age, but was still working due to his own situations in life. He was a caring person, not like most other mechanics at the time. He said to me, always pull most of the dirt away from your hands onto a cloth first, and hence reducing or even completely avoiding harsher treatment like rubbing hands together and lathering and scrubbing with a brush, etc. That way, you can remove the majority of contaminants from your hands using much more skin-friendly hand soaps before even considering using any harsh chemicals at all. At 55, I still remember that fella, and still use a towelling flannel to this day, avoiding the use of hand cleaners. The cloth is then very easily cleaned using the same, sensitive soap as for your hands. Still enjoying working on my own bikes and cars now, probably one of the best pieces of advice I've ever had in my life. 🙂

Good experience. i don't use pumice cleaners for that reason, much to hard on the skin. So I've used Goop or Go Jo for a long time. Both of them want you to wipe dry, not use water, to retain the skin conditioners on the skin. A nail brush is mandatory, and mostly today I wash my hands in the sink rather than just wipe. Not all nail brushes are equal, so I've tried many different ones and found a shorter bristle length is better. A new brush design is out with a single row of bristles up against the plastic top so you can get deeper into the nail, it's helpful in getting the nails clean. Since I'm not a mechanic by trade, but do a lot of dirty car work as my hobby, I like to have super clean hands and nails, and so does my SO. 🙂. This was a good review, I may try the Zolex Cherry since it's top rated.

The white Permatex and original Gojo reminds me of my favorite, GOOP! Always used GOOP in the past with boraxo as the grit, never had any mess that it couldn't take care of. Use a spoon to dispense if you have dirty hands or it would turn to pure liquid and be hard to manage (but would still clean like nobody's business).

Hi, I watch and like your videos and I have a comment about hand cleaners. I’m a musician and like most musicians we tend to learn to do a lot of things ourselves, especially car repairs. Believe it or not the best hand degreaser is cooking oil. I would just pour some cooking oil on my hands and scrub as usual and then wipe off with paper towels. When my hands seemed clean I then would wash with soap and water. This is past tense because I now always use gloves. Thanks and keep up the good work.

When I was a kid in the 60s and worked in a gas station, we used Kerosene mixed with a little tide detergent, then Had Boraxo hand soap. The Boraxo bar was green with gritty borax in it. Then in the late 70s and 80s we started using a Gojo product that had an orange smell to it. I now keep a product called Tub of Towels in my garage. You can pull one towel out and it cleans every type of dirt, grease, tar, glue that I have gotten on my hands and you don't need to wash with soap and water afterwards. Thanks for the comparison though. very thorough.

I’m a diesel mechanic and I have very damaged hands so grease sticks to them extra bad. I like the most aggressive hand cleaners that do the best job at getting in the cracks of my skin and removing the black grease. here are my three favorite hand cleaners: 1: Boraxo Powdered hand cleaner. 2: Gojo Supro Max. 3: Cherry Bomb. Gojo supro max is my most used cleaner because it’s already a liquid vs the boraxo which is a powder that must be mixed with water.

For my business one of the key takeaways is ease of use. Many of these soap companies want you to use their own proprietary, usually wall mounted dispensers. For some shop owners like mysef, this is a negative deterrent to purchasing. I don’t want some crap mounted on my wall only for them to change the dispenser, discontinue the product or find a better replacement, etc. Great video and my shop currently has the Permatex Extreme in use at the moment 😆 I purchased it about 6-8months ago purely based off of (1) it was the cheapest deal at the time and (2) we had never tried that scent before. It smells good and seems to work just as good as all the previous hand soaps. While overall none of us have experienced any ground breaking results just cleaning our hands over our regular (GoJo orange or cherry) it definitely has more “bang for the buck” when looking at container size (price per ounce) and ease of use (just sits in the deep sink).

Most of these brands I've never heard of. Gojo and Gojo Orange are the ones I've used in the past. There was also some powdered hand cleaner I used in shop class. Boraxo or something like that I used for a while as well (light blue colored cylindrical container filled with powder). I do diesel truck repair now. The best is the snap on walnut. Barely need a quarter size for most clean up, maybe a little extra for the arms with a nail brush. The original grip clean "dirt" formula is a decent cheaper alternative. The snap on is like $34 for the quart I think and it lasts and smells ok. Cintas also has a walnut scrub but in super small containers from their Sanis line. That stuff was very similar and worked very well. The pumice in some of the soaps is good for weekend warrior stuff

I started using Permatex DL as a kid in the 60s and after decades of greasy grimy work, I still buy and even special order the DL. I’ve tried the “grit” stuff which works okay but leaves its grit behind. The DL creams, dissolves while rubbing and wipes away clean and smooth. No washing required. It also works well as a spot treatment for clothing. I’ll have to try the “Extreme” version.

You should do a video on shop fans. For those of us with small garages and don't have the space for a 42" or 50" drum fan it would be nice to know if a 24", 30" or 36" fan will do the job. It seems like the CFM ratings are very subjective and some fans shoot air in a straight line and some spread it out to cover a large area.
