JohnnyRebKy @JohnnyRebKy, I have owned HARLEY-DAVIDSON motorcycles too and I cannot tell you how many time it was in the shop for repairs. Windshields that broke in half and hit me in the face at above freeway speeds. The right saddlebag lid flipped off the saddle bag at freeway speeds again. The motor had to be rebuilt before 60,000 miles, no extended warranty. The toe and heal shifter broke off and this was all in less than 3 years of riding. I can’t even began to tell you how many times my wife had to help me push start the Harley in cold weather. After that experience I bought a Honda GoldWing, put over 110,000 miles on it and only service was oil, tire, spark plugs and check the tire pressure at regular intervals. I wish you could have tried something else to compare your Harley experience too. Thanks for answering me though, I don’t have a MC now and I know Harleys have improved but even used ones are too expensive.

@@vtxdaryl as I said I buy used stuff so I never spent over 6k on a harley. I also have a kawasaki vulcan 1600. Sorry dude I haven't owned a 1970s Shovelhead I had to push around 🤷. Mine have all been modern Harley's made in the 2000s. Never had one not start, never had one fail to do anything in 20 years. Oil brakes and tires . Yea I've had plenty of experience on other things to compare it with. But I can't make up a story about how much better they were than my harleys because I never had a problem with a Harley either 🤷. I'm a member of a Kawasaki forum and Honda and they all do the same old things any other machine is capable of doing. If you get online somebody somewhere has a Honda leaking oil or won't start. But it doesn't mean a damn thing . Nobody makes Honda jokes then they leak and fail to start...and it shouldn't be a joke because it's not the normal for them. Well I hate to break it to ya that leaking and not starting is also not a norm for Harley's either this century. My neighbor has 100k miles on his Harley ultra. He rides it from Kentucky to Las Vegas and back every year. Every person I know has one and they all fire up and go anytime 👍 Things can fall off any bike when you don't do a yearly check on mounting hardware and things like that . I do it on my Kawasaki too because it's perfectly capable of something getting lose just like all other machines. And I love Goldwing s

After riding a metric for a couple of years, I went with the Softail Deluxe for my first HD. Although I've trimmed it out with a windshield, bags and cruise control, its really a "chromed out 107 Heritage with white walls" :) I liked the lower weight and slightly lower seat then the Heritage as well. Best advise: Go sit on them and see which one talks to you! Great Video! -PH

I took the course at age 44 and started with a 2012 Softail Slim. I know not very bright with a brand new bike for my first bike but it worked out great. I rode that for 5 years and then switched to a 2017 Street Glide Special. Absolutely loved that bike. I sold it 4 months ago because with everything going on in my life with work and medical stuff I just didn't ride it much so I set a price I felt might be a little high and told myself if someone wants to pay that price I would sell. Sadly someone did and I sold the bike but I miss it way more than I thought I would, therefore, I am thinking about getting a Fatboy. I have always wanted a Fatboy (even though my Street Glide was my dream bike) but I can only afford one bike at a time so. Plus the Fatboy will be better for my lesser riding needs than I have had in the past. I don't know I am still thinking about it but I really miss the roar and the wind therapy.

I've been a life long cyclist, never thought about motor vehicles, never even got my license, but I fell in love with a Harley Heritage Classic 2021 I saw recently so I've been looking into them. One massive observation I've made so far is that these huge motorbikes have a lot more in common with a car than they do with a bicycle.

I hope you get one. However, I'm not sure about your observation as it pertains to the Heritage Softail Classic you've been looking at. Now, if you were looking at a newer Electra Glide Ultra, I'd be more inclined to agree with you. Make no mistake, these are two wheeled machines with handling characteristics that can't be confused with a car. And the Softail has no entertainment system or navigation either. It's got power and great looks with a quality of finish that is second to none. Have fun!

I bought my first Harley back in January which was the Iron 883. Three weeks later, I traded it for a Low Rider because I was riding a lot at highway speeds and riding about 80 miles a day, so I needed the 6th gear and a bigger tank. Do I regret buying the sportster first? Not at all. The Iron is a great bike, especially for in town riding and got me used to a V-twin because I came from Yamahas. The Low Rider fits me much better and has plenty of power. Now, to customize it!

The Harley shop that I got my first bike from told me that the sportsters are the most returned/exchanged bikes after the 6mo mark, mostly due to what you said about them. They said that if I was looking to go for comfort and distance then I'd might want to get something else. They suggested an older Heritage model and I went with that for my first bike.

When I decided to teach my wife how to ride we took her down to the Harley dealer and I explained to her that whatever bike she chose she needed to be comfortable sitting on it. I told her not to pay attention to the bars but to pay attention to seat height and comfort with her feet on the ground and on the running boards or pegs. You fell in love with a two thousand two fxdl Low Rider. I changed the bars in the risers so she wasn't having to lean forward to reach them and put a set of highway bars on it in case she dropped it, and a slightly lower Mustang seat so her feet were flat when she was stopped. Two things that I found most important for her where having a bike she enjoyed and liked + 2 was comfortable enough to be confident. It made a tremendous difference in the efforts you put into learning how to ride, verses giving up on it because she didn't feel confident. Or felt like she was riding a quote beginners bike". I also did not have to contend with buying a bigger bike six months or a year after she learned to ride. We just put a windshield and saddlebags on it and she was happy.

My first Harley was my last Harley. In 1981 I bought a beautiful and expensive Harley called the ‘Tour Glide’. It was described as Harleys first frame mounted fairing. The problems began the day after I traded in my Gold-wing and bought my Harley. I drive it to work and after my shift ended I find the battery is dead. I get a jump from am other bike and drive home. The next morning , I am ready for work but the battery is dead again. After work I drop off my bike at the Harley dealership to assess the problem. The dealership has my bike for 3 days finally informed me they have to order parts. Another 3 days pass and I’m notified that my bike was finally ready to roll. I pick up my bike and finally it starts up on the first try. A few days later, My wife and I depart for Tonopah Nevada from Phoenix Arizona. About halfway there, the shift mechanism vibrates off at high speed. I bring my bike to a stop and walk about 100 meters looking my for shifter and connecting bolt. After about 30 minutes of searching I finally locate the shifter and the bolt and re-attached it to the shifter arm. On the road again we finally reach Tonopah and checked into our hotel. The next morning we decide to ride to Reno. The battery was again, dead. We finally decided to return home before anything else happens. We get a jump, ride home directly to the dealership and drop off the bike. My wife is really upset that I traded in my Goldwing for this piece of junk tour glide. We go to the dealership and try to trade back for my Goldwing but it was already sold. Previously we had put about 110,000 miles on our Goldwing and never had any problems. My wife said no more motorcycles unless we buy another Goldwing. The Harley dealership would not give us a fair trade in for the tour glide so I traded in at the Honda dealership but lost 3,000 bucks on the trade in. We bought another Goldwing and again enjoyed more problem free travel. Another 100,000 +miles. My wife loved the quiet powerful engine, no vibration, no problem Goldwing.

My vote for the first HD would be a used Deluxe Softail. It has a low seat height and a low center of gravity which makes it much easier to control at parking lot speeds for newbies and those that are vertically challenged. It also has the big V-Twin engine which will serve you better on road trips, even shorter ones. Since these are traded in all the time by people upgrading, they can be a less expensive option. Nothing wrong with Sportsters, but while lighter they do have a higher center of gravity and have a higher seat height.

I chose a 19’ FXLR, the standard one with the 107 in chrome, in the dark red color. I’m 5’7” like you and the seat and riding position is perfect. I can flat foot it with ease. I have the clip on luggage rack and backrest , and the small clip on windshield. I may add some highway pegs at some point for long trips but the mid controls are fine really. Otherwise it’s stock and I see no need to upgrade or change anything, loud pipes aren’t really my thing. It’s proved to be the perfect all around cruiser for me. It’s light and nimble enough for a daily rider, and with some waterproof soft bags it’s been on a 3500 mile adventure with ease.

I like a couple of the new Softails quite a bit, the Standard and the Low Rider. The high end models seem like too much money to not step up to Touring with the exception of maybe the Heritage. I LOVE the FLHT, the understated and practical Electra Glide Standard, no frills, just riding. It’s near perfect and the price is a bargain compared to the rest of the Touring line which, for me, leans too heavily on the custom look on several models and pricing is out of the realm of what most normal working people can afford.

Harley Davidson is probably selling the best bike they've ever made but my 96 Goldwing has features that Harley probably won't ever have. Center stand, on the go rear shock adjustment and a permanent clutch being just a few. I went to Harley last year and Honda as well. The new Honda is junk in my opinion because it's Plagued with problems!. The Harley is out of my price range so, at my age, I'm going to wear out old dependable. Great video! Many thanks!

It came with new tires, and after having the forks rebuilt, a new chain & handlebar risers I Love the bike! It still needs some work but I DO have new progressive shocks, some new rear fender supports (to go along w/ new paint hopefully) And it needs a LOT of cleaning polishing of aluminum on it, I'm just waiting for weather to break here in Metro Detroit.

I can honestly say that for a first rider, the dyna super glide would have been be my choice, but Harley killed that one (could ride for hours, and did) and for comfort, style and ride, the street glide was it for me and still is my favorite. Having said that though, unless you're only driving in town, a sportster is great but if you're going to go on highways, I think the bigger bikes are the way to go. I ride a 500 cc bike on the highway and it's scary but on the big bikes, I could roll that throttle and get out of a lot of situations

i have a 2006 1200 roadster which I have traveled all across western Canada and the Yukon with for years. I moto camp with this bike on these trips as well, I have even done the iron butt on this bike twice. I think they are highly under rated. The best thing about these bikes is you can modify them for whatever kind of riding you like to do. I changed my final drive ratio by installing a bigger drive gear and a speedo corrector. it loses some zip off the line but I am a 90 percent highway rider. The only down side is the size of the fuel tank, but i carry a spare 1.5 gallon tank making my range easily 400 to 450 kms or 250 to 300 miles.

I picked up an '07 creampuff last year within the $6K range, and it came with bags, new WW tires, a new seat, and a genuine, vintage "H-D"-branded windshield. Invested another $450 in a thorough inspection and slight oil leak fix, and it's been rock solid/dry as a bone ever since...and I take cruises on it daily. I really enjoy this model, and I cannot imagine getting anything else because she's such a "retro" honey!

There isn't a universal best 1st Harley for anybody. It's completely subjective and depends on the rider's particular wants, needs, skills level and budget. My 1st Harley and also my 2nd were both Ultra Classic's. For a friend of mine his was the Sportster and yet another friend his was a Heritage Softail. So it all depends on the unique needs of the rider.

I agree. The bike has to fit the rider. I have a 1995 Bad Boy that I have built to fit me and to my liking. I've flirted with buying a new bike but there are so many things I don't like about them. Harley for me has lost it's charm and creativity. Understandably they want to appeal to the weekend bikers with money. Bikers that don't want to wrench on their bikes. It's the end of the badass bike era to make way for the yuppie era. My favorite bike was a 1974 Harley chopper. I lived on that bike. Love the shovelhead engines. Ride safe.

Stay away from the older twin cam 88s. Stator can melt, and the cam tensioners will either have to be replaced or the whole system replaced (hydraulic or gear drive) Older twin cam 88s may seem like a great first bike if you didn’t want a sportster and you found a good deal on a dyna etc, BUT full of issues and build quality issues. If you’re crazy about the Dyna series then at least spend the extra money and get the 96. Aim for the lowest mileage possible AND a dealer with a good warranty.
