Is there a BEST headphone for gaming? When I'm looking for a new gaming headset, I look for 3 basic qualities:

I modded mines and added a V-MODA BoomPro mic, making them a really cool gaming headset! :) Video here if you're interested : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y_fd3PzoTeY.html

I've gone through a few pairs over the last 6 years. First, the Sony surround headset for Ps3.. very meh. Then, Turtle Beach PX4. Seemed good. Finally built a pc, got the Razer Kraken 7.1.. uncomfortable as all can be. Did some silly research, wanting a competitive edge with surround sound and I purchased the Razer Tiamat 7.1 (like 10 separate drivers, but all very cheapy) and a Asus ROG Phoebus sound card. Yet again, Razer were uncomfortable as shit. The surround seemed great, however. A little over a month ago, I bought the Kingston HyperX Cloud Revolver. Holy shit, best headset I've owned! Stereo is where it's at, sound positioning was great, music had new life. Then... watched this video among others, and the Sennheiser 598's came on sale for $200ish cdn. Game changed. Open back non-gaming headphones for now on! Thanks for the video man. Oh, also got the highest rated standalone attachable microphone I could find, the Antlion ModMic.
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 8 лет назад
You've been through your fair share of headphones! I remember when the Asus ROG Phoebus came out...I wanted one so bad, but they were so expensive. I settled for a Xonar DX instead...it was a great budget card, but I haven't used it in years. I'm glad the video helped you out! If I didn't have an AT2020 mic, I'd definitely be using the ModMic also!!

Myxo14Gaming I had a question come to me today. I've been running the 598 with minor eq; just some bass and a touch of high end plus compressor. Today I decided to try the rog surround virtualizer which imo sucked with the Cloud Revolver (closed back "gaming headset"). I'm actually quite impressed, the wide sound stage with the virtualizer is the first time I've liked virtual surround. Have you tried such with these and if so, what did you think?
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 8 лет назад
I think the Xonar drivers I used had a 7.1 virtualizer (it's been a couple years since I've used it, so I don't remember all the details). I used it with my HD595's and quite liked it...I thought it worked pretty good for BF3. If I recall correctly, I was able to space out the 7.1 speakers via the driver software. I used to tinker around with it quite a bit.
@Steadybeheady
@Steadybeheady 8 лет назад
Myxo14Gaming Yeah I'd agree that it works well in BF. I used in in 4 shooters so far and only found that it seemed best off in Red Orchestra 2 online. I'm intrigued by Waves NX if you've checked into that at all. I'm not buying into the Ossic X as I've had bad experiences with both multi driver headphones, and closed back, but good software paired with nice open back headphones could be something!

Do Sennheiser HD 598 cs work well for: music, movies, gaming? I need everything from my headphones. Thanks to anyone who answers
@astro0125
@astro0125 7 лет назад
It depends on a lot of factors, there are "better" headphones when compared in the same class, in other words, you wouldn't compare a car with a motorcycle. The 598's will not have the boom hitting bass or strong sub bass, but it does exist as it would sound as if it were played in an open room on your ears because they are open back. If you listen to bass heavy music like dub or EDM these woudnt be for you. For gaming, movies, and certain music, they will be great, as long as you dont want just thumping bass. I disagree with A LOT of people and think the audio-technica m50x's have horrific sound, just terrible especially for the price, unlike the m40x or msr-7's. So if you reply with what you like, how much you want to spend, where you will be using them, etc, can probably give you a more direct answer

I am a fellow audiophile, and feel the same as you. I've tried almost all the top "gaming" headsets (Astro 50 2d & 3d generation; Turtle Beach Elite 800's; Razer; Steel Series Wireless H ...the originals these were great!!!). I finally bought the Antlion Modmic and affixed them to the Audio Technica M50's and they are great for gaming. I also have used the Sennheiser Game ONE. I am currently using the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 with the fixed microphone and I love these. I plug them into the Astro 40 mixamp on xbox one and the Soundblaster X G5 for the Playstation 4. These really give me the most out of these headphones and the Dolby Atmos on the Xbox One is outstanding as well (if you use the Atmos, please disable any audio enhancements on your headphones or amps as these interfere with the Atmos and your not getting the best sound). Another reason to buy audiophile headsets...they work for virtually every gaming device out there; PC, Xbox, PS4, Switch, IOS, Android etc.

Finally somebody on YT reviewing normal stereo headphones for gaming. I have done a ton of research for a decent headset for my PS4 Slim. I own the Sony Gold and I think they don't sound bad, but the build is really crappy! What's it about all those surround gaming headsets? What's your honest opinion about these virtual surround headsets?Take for instance the Astro A50. Priced for 300euros!!! Cheap plastic and way overpriced. I am now looking for a decent stereo wired headphone and thinking of getting the Sennheiser HD 598. Connect these to my Sony surround receiver and I am able to use my headset on all my gaming consoles. Only doubt I am having is how will it sound? Will a game developed with a surround sound, sound good on a stereo headphone?

hey man do you use a sound card with your hd 598? What is you Realtek HD audio settings? Every time I play CS:Go I can't tell how far someone is behind me. I'm always getting called "deaf" by teammates ....
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 8 лет назад
I use a Cakewalk UA-25ex audio interface (like a Focusrite Scarlett) rather than a soundcard. There are no audio setting to tweek; I just get raw sound. I don't have CS:Go installed, but make sure you're using "High" audio quality in your in-game audio settings and maybe try switching between "headphones" and "5.1" audio to see if that makes a difference. I reccommend using the headphone setting, but 5.1 may be worth a try. Good luck man!

I just got an Xbox One X and I wanted to know what is the best possible mic you can get with the HD 598 for gaming on the Xbox One Console? Any help at all would be appreciated thank you.

I had this same conversation last night. If you can't use a dedicated mic such as a yeti or at2020, a Mod Mic is your best best for performance and sound quality. I want to try the mod mic 5 XLR version...but it's pricey.

Thank you for the quick reply I appreciate it. I just wanted to ask you if I were to use the HD 598 for console gaming on my xbox one do you think the mod mic 5 XLR Version would be better then the regular mod mic 5? I like how it has a boom micophone and looks better overall. I just need a mic for my HD 598 for gaming so I can talk online.
@Myxo14

I'd probably stick with the regular mod mic 5. The XLR version is the regular version with an XLR adapter. You can buy these adapters separately, so it isn't an immediate purchase decision.

+Myxo14Gaming I'm just nitpicking though... the headphones literally doubled my K/D since I was using NO audio before haha... also would you recommend getting the audio engine a2+?
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 8 лет назад
The a2+ are a fantastic desktop speaker. It really depends what you're using them for. If you're wanting to rely on them for positional audio while gaming, I'd stick with using your 598s cause you're going to get better awareness of your surroundings from an open back style headphone. With that said, if you're looking for an all-round great desktop speaker, the a2+ fits the bill. If you have the space, I'd recommend going for the a5+. You'll get superior bass response out of those due to the bigger cabinet and drivers. Google "the absolute sound" for a review on the a2+...those guys know audio! I've been reading their magazine for years.

Is open better ? I'm using Astro A40 TR, its great in stereo and neutral/flat eq. But I'm considering to get the mod kit so I can make my A40 closed back. But Open Back isn't that bad except the first day since I'm used to wear closed back.
@tuunaes
@tuunaes 6 лет назад
It's not actually directly about open design but about sound stage. And in that closed design is huge challenge/drag often trashing sound stage more or less badly. You can test sound stage with these videos: (everything to 2.0/stereo without any effects) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d1_20T8x_OI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B8xZp0WPwxs.html You should have sense of big space around you with farther shots literally feeling coming from far away if headphones are good.

Would you recommend the hd 598s as good for gaming? I don't want to have a disadvantage against enemies with 7.1 headsets in shooter or so.... but I want to keep the best music sound quality! Are those good for gaming or should I aim for the 373d s ?
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 8 лет назад
This question would make a great video! I'd definitely recommend the 598's for gaming and music (assuming you get them at $99; they're hard to beat). The Massdrop HD6XX headphones for $199USD are going to be the new value king I think. While the 373d's are marketed as a 7.1 headset, they are a single driver headphone (just like the 598's). The 7.1 is achieved through "dolby surround sound" i.e. hardware/software (you push a button on a dongle to enable dolby). Asus Xonar soundcards offer the same type of feature. I don't imagine you'll be at a disadvantage not having 7.1...but this depends on how competitive you are I guess. You could pair the 598's with a Xonar soundcard which would be a cheaper solution than the 373d's. As for music...this is more controversial. My personal belief is that music is meant to be listened to in stereo only...not surround. Everyone has different preferences though...some people like listening to their music in surround. I haven't listened to the 373d's so I can't really give an opinion if they'd be any good for music. Thanks for watching man!

Myxo14Gaming I thank you! The 598 are 160€ for me, the 6XX I am not able to buy due to they are sold out..... I am currently looking into using the asus z170 viii hero as my mainboard; will that be good for sound? And as for 7.1 software; do you have a video about it?
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 8 лет назад
+LumaxX 007 160 Euros ($170 USD) is way too much to spend on the 598's...unless that's the best deal you can find. I'd wait for them to go on sale. I haven't used on board sound in years, but the specs of the z170 look pretty good...the specs mention a headphone amp, which is good (although the 598's don't really need it). Looks like it also has 7.1 channels via the 'sonic studio ii' software. I have no idea if it's any good, but it's worth a try (it's not dolby). I don't have a video about 7.1 software. I've never felt at a disadvantage by just using stereo game audio.

The m50 are not bass heavy. The bass is deep but it's not emphasized. The sound signature is flat which means it has much less bass than most headphones on the market which have a U shape signature (emphasis on the bass and treble while lacking in the mids)
@tuunaes
@tuunaes 6 лет назад
ATHM-M50 is clearly above neutral/emphasized bass headphone: graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=&graphID[]=2941&scale=30 Newer M50x model even seems to to have still stronger bass. Of course if comparison point is some total garbage then it might feel flat bass but it certainly isn't neutral.
@tuunaes
@tuunaes 6 лет назад
For closed headphones (in case of needing sound isolation) Beyerdynamic's DT770 should have very decent sound stage for its price class. So with some minus equalizer for bass it should be better than ATH-M50x If not needing external sound isolation then choise should be open headphone. Those can also give fun bass if that's wanted. Beyerdynamic DT990 has HD595 level soundstage and very good bass immersion without drowning details that badly unlike in small soundstage closed headphones. AKG K712 has overall similar sound style with little less bass "fun factor" and better competitiveness with step bigger soundstage. AKG K701/702 are again at absolute top level in competitiveness with that huge sound stage and neutral bass taking back seat to details. And nowadays all these have comfortable smooth headband instead of old "AKG bumps". (like in Q701) Also especially their lower bass is better than in ATH-AD700x for better overall immersion. Have myself retired tape holding pieces from dropping HD595 Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic DT990 and couple months ago bought AKG K712 and second hand K702. Once got Turtle Beach Z60 for testing and in comparison those give head in bucket under water immersion. And their sound isn't even worst of gaming garbage: uk.hardware.info/reviews/6080/17/13-headsets-review-listen-in-higher-quality-testresults---frequency-response Reason why there are so many of these gaming brands is that they can take cheapest Chinese crap and sell it at huge profit margin. When people are ready to pay ridiculous prices for gets old in couple years graphics cards these headphones made by actual audio maker shouldn't be expensive.

If you can find it (discontinued model) Q701 is certainly excellent, though little bit behind top level K701/K702 because of little above neutral bass. Though for comfort those bumps in headband aren't good and K701/702 win in that by big margin with smooth head band! Again for balance between competitiveness and good "fun factor" K712 is very good with only step lower competitiveness in exhange for good bass impact.

I need new head phones but don't no what to buy. I need them for pc/xbox/ps4 multi closed sound
@Myxo14
@Myxo14 8 лет назад
The HD 598's don't leak a crazy amount of sound, but if you need to get a closed headphone, I'd focus on a comfortable headphone, such as an over-ear headphone. Budget also becomes an issue when picking headphones, but I wouldn't look at an expensive set of closed back headphones for gaming being that they are going to be lacking in soundstage (but if you're using them for both listening to music and gaming...that's a different story altogether). The ath-m40x and m50x aren't bad choices...but I'd encourage you to try a few sets out to see what sounds good to you. I'd avoid headphones with multiple drivers being positional audio is never good in these types of headphones...stick to one driver per ear cup (i.e. stereo). I'd also avoid anything with over emphazised bass such as Beats...but again, if you like bassy headphones, go for it!!

I wanted to switch to the HD595's from my closed back Sony MDR V6's. Everything tells me it makes sense to go open but I worry that my mic will pick up the noise leakage from the the headphones? I will be attaching a mod mic (Unidirectional) www.modmic.com/collections/modmic/products/modmic-muteless Any comments on insight on this? Especially from anyone who has already tried. Cheers!

I'm currently using an Audio-Techinca AT2020 mic, and it does pickup noise leakage from the headphones but it's extremely minor (it picks up my keyboard mostly). No one I game with hears echo or anything out of the norm, and my voice always sounds crisp. Even though the modmic is mounted near the driver of the headphone, I don't imagine you'll have much of a problem...unless you have your volume really loud.

For some reason I get an error every time I try to reply to your comment on my question. Just wanted to say thank you for the reply and very detailed info! Much appreciated.
