This fall I upgraded my hearing aids to the Phonak L70-R from the Phonak M50-R. I have severe hearing loss at higher frequencies in both of my ears. I love these hearing aids! In particular, I love that I can stream hours of audio and they still last all day (even when up at 7AM, streaming for ~4 hours I only start to run out of battery around 12AM). The ability to stay connected to multiple devices is great too as I bounce between using them on my phone and PC. They are very comfortable, even with glasses. I opted for custom silicon ear molds. I also got the partner mic, which has been very handy when I'm out and about in busy places. I thankfully had insurance to cover the cost, but they were about $5500 total. Still dreaming of them making more fun color options! Thank you for the video as I felt even better about my choice, haha.

Gotta love how hearing specialists never mention prices. Every other industry does. They give price ranges when it’s uncertain. It causes mistrust.

If I could give accurate pricing, I would. Fortunately, the hearing aid industry isn't a cartel that price fixes that would make everything cost the same. The negative is that pricing is literally different no matter where you go.

I spent a lot of money on Phonak 90 Paradise hearing aids and was super happy with them (for conversations) until the right hearing aid stopped charging. My hearing aid charger was replaced, free of charge. 2 months later, my right hearing aid started buzzing and then refused to charge. 3 weeks later, I had a new hearing aid. 1 week later, neither hearing aid would charge. There is power to the charger, but the charging lights when you flip open the case are dead. No lights. Nothing. So, I'm back to waiting for a replacement. I take real good care of my expensive hearing aids, cleaning them according to videos. They look brand new. I don't understand why my earbuds for $200 sound and work better when connected to my phone than my 7k hearing aids. There is much to be done in terms of hearing aids catching up to earbud technology and efficiency. I have mild hearing loss, but decided I want to hear well now. I'm now thinking of going with a different brand. I'm hoping there has been lots of improvement from 1 year ago. In the meantime, just be aware to know your warranties because you may receive a lemon device.

0 seconds ago Dr. Cliff - Reading this fellow viewer's post, I am struck by the fact that these are virtually the identical problems, from the same manufacturer, Sonoma/Phonak that you reported occurring for Costco's virtually identical KS10s, and yet when you issued that video you blamed all those defects on Costco, as if they were the manufacturer rather than Sonoma/Phonak! I was quite offended by that video, and with your pose on the opening scene, wrinkling up your nose as if reacting to a bad odor! Wasn't placing the blame on Costco for those defects grossly misleading?
@Barutokun
@Barutokun 8 месяцев назад
You might want to try resetting the hearing aids. This can be done by pressing and holding the lower button (the one you use for lowering volume) for about 15-20 seconds. It might look like nothing's happening, but put in into the charger afterwards and watch. You might see the lights go on.

Great info as always. Thanks. However... WHY is it that several hearing aid manufacturers use "Made for iPhone" Bluetooth, and ignore Android. Don't they realize that Android has a larger market share than iPhone (worldwide)? Lack of Android support is a deal breaker for me, and I suspect others.
@BobAltizer
@BobAltizer Месяц назад
Every iPhone model is built exactly the same way by Apple and runs only iOS versions compatible with that hardware, so app designers have a single target to hit. Android phones are built to dozens of different hardware designs and use dozens of manufacturer-specific versions of the Android OS, making them a much more difficult target, especially for high-performance gear like hearing aids.

The Oticon review is misleading. They pair with Android phones, but are not hands free. You can hear the other party through the hearing aids, but you have to use the Android phone microphone, and so have to carry the phone around in front of your face. The Phonak is fully handsfree with Android phones.

Rather than a randomized list of hearing aids, I suggest that you list the hearing aids in alphabetic order. Alphabetic order is immediately understood for what it is, and any order other than alphabetic is assumed to have some significance. - That said, this is a useful video, and I always learn from your reviews.

Although, i am not in the market for a new pair of hearing aids this year , the continuing technology upgrades are always an eye opener. I am not a techo geek so some of the extra features on the higher technology devices aren’t something I would miss. There are game changers and dealbreakers on any brand. Telecoil availability was the biggest dealbreaker for me. Second feature that i struggled with was rechargeable versus disposable batteries and the fact at the time that if I chose rechargeable that Oticon was the only rechargeable where the device did not have to be returned to the manufacturer for replacement. It was not easy to narrow down the other features and perceived sound quality. The Phonak Bluetooth capabilities was the factor that made selection a lot easier. I do not know how i survived before Bluetooth hearing aids. I’m also wondering how much better I could be with a table mic. I guess my next upgrade will be when Auracast becomes widely available . Now, if manufacturers could do something about the style and color, bright colors would definitely make me consider buying another pair now. I am hoping someone is working on making devices more attractive. Even though color does not improve functionality, it would improve my overall satisfaction immensely.

This is where a Google search and talking to my audiologist worked for me. Then I could find an average price for my area. Everything was always cheaper with my old audiologist because he owned his own business and worked//taught at the University. Since he retired it's been hard to find an audiologist that doesn't have to pay a pe4sentage to some bigger chain/company. Prices went way up due to that.
@mrc2165
@mrc2165 8 месяцев назад
@bjflinn1 I'm curious how a google search helped you with local audiologist pricing. Without knowing the wholesale price of the aids, there is really no way of knowing if you overpaid. You may feel like you got a good deal, but there is no way to know. Many consumers know the added value of continuing service over a given time and can factor that in themselves. I know a few audiologists I've been to said they were offering me $11k aids for a steal at only $5-6k, not knowing I am informed and what was offered wasn't even a top tier aid.

Hey Dr. Cliff. Thank you so much for sharing! It's the first time I've watched a video about hearing aids in English. I can hear you with my headphones, haha! If I save money this year, I should be able to buy some of the best, high-quality hearing aids. but I live in Thailand. It's not easy though. My recent test results showed profound hearing loss in my right ear and severe hearing loss in my left. Yes, it's really difficult at 23 years old. I started losing my hearing around 5 years old. When I was 3-4 years old, I fell often. This likely affected my whole life - including a fall down the stairs. I think I want to get some great hearing aids. I need to play guitar and learn new languages as much as possible! For now, I can still do both. I can play some songs and even wrote one of my own!

Doctor Cliff should do a better job highlighting that those hearing aids that depend upon the Android ASHA protocol are not sufficient for hands-free phone use (unlike the iPhone protocol). This is a big deal to me as an Android user who will not move to iPhones. Consequently, my choices reduce to hearing aids that accommodate hands free with Android phones - which are only Phonak and the new Orka OTC hearing aids.

Hi. My understanding of Auracast is that a transmitter can stream to multiple different devices. I am currently trialling a pair of Nexias and the Resound TV Streamer+. They work well but I had hoped that the Auracast streamer could simultaneously connect to any other hearing device with Auracast capabilities. Not so. My wife is also trying a pair of Oticon Intents but the streamer will not connect to them. It appears that Resound have misled customers by describing the device as Auracast if it is only able to stream to their own products.

I'm currently testing the Starkey Genesis Ai. I'm not impressed so far, as I believe I'm hearing the "Starkey Hiss". It sounds like a faint rubbing of a stick on an empty gift wrap tube. I hear it when my TV is on, and even now sitting in a quiet room. If I clear my throat, or the fridge motor kicks off, that sounds increases for a few seconds. Hearing a soft spoken person in a quiet room is still a problem, and I don't experience much background noise reduction at all. The HA's seem to still amplify everything. I can honestly say I've never been so aware of my shoes crunching the carpet under my feet. Next week, I change to The Resound Nexia's. Starting to think the Phonak Lumity's might be another option.

I've had two set of Receiver-in-Canal hearing now and neither the Phonak or the Oticon have been satisfactory. Going into a noisy environment is a nightmare. I've thought about getting an in-the-canal type next time. It seems to me that they should be better overall. The Receiver-in-Canal type of hearing aids pretty much negates the anatomy of the ear and the in the in-the-canal would seem (to me) to utilize the antatomy of the ear or at least not "override" it. Thoughts?

Not really. This has more to do with your SNR Loss score and how well you are meeting your hearing loss Prescription targets verified with Real Ear Measurement. However, your hearing aids may meet your targets more accurately with a custom earmold on your RIC Hearing Aid or a custom ITE device.

Hey Dr. C! Great stuff! First time HA user with tinnitus - I'm 30 days into a 45 day trial with the Nexia 9's. So far so good, but I've gotta say I'm pretty disappointed with the streaming quality - sounds like bad AM radio (open domes, I know). Would I be better off looking at Phonak with the ActiveVent receiver? Other thoughts? Love the videos - learning so much so fast!
@DrCliffAuD
@DrCliffAuD 8 месяцев назад
The domes and/or programming are likely the issue. New hearing aids may not yield additional benefit unless these two variables are handled correctly.

I am trialing the resound CROS aids level 5 and the streaming quality is terrible. They sound like a cheap speaker from Kmart versus a Bose speaker or even my AirPods! My Audiologist said I could trial the level 9 but she did not think it would make a difference! She told me she cannot change the sound of the streaming. Thus, I am going to trial the Phonak aids next. Let me know if you get it figured and are able to improve the streaming sound.
@StPaulMan
@StPaulMan 6 месяцев назад
Hi, I ended up going with the Oticon Real 1's and the streaming quality is pretty good. They will never rival AirPods, but they are noticeably better than the ReSounds Nexia 9's - night and day, actually. The Reals also have larger domes, so I wonder if that helps hold some of the lower frequencies in? (just a guess). I also found the Nexia 9's to be very susceptible to wind noise where it's a non-issue with the Reals. I don't like the Oticon app as much as the ReSound app (seems a bit clunky), but you do have a separate equalizer for when you're streaming and that makes quite a difference too. Best of luck to you! @@triciacarroll3265

To totally avoid the cost issue is really deceptive. You can provide a range. But you don't because you think it will scare people away from hearing aids. So, we are left guessing. My guess is $2000-$8000. What's yours?

I have high frequency loss with tinnitus in both ears. Local audiologist recommended, Widex Moment Sheer sRIC 440, which I am getting fitted this-coming week. I'm sad to not see it in your Top 5. From what I've read and what the audiologist said, it seemed to be a good choice for me, however, now I'm wondering if it will be.

Was fitted with the widex 440 and compared it to the oticon real. Previously I'd had a unitron that was 3 years old. I was wanting to upgrade and was keen to compare. I like music and I am a birdwatcher so sound quality and high frequency reproduction are my most important criteria. I preferred the sound quality on the widex. On the keyboard the f above middle c sounded "off" on the real. Also amplification of high pitches was better produced with the widex. I hope you are happy with the Widex. Here in UK the audiologist was selling the Widex cheaper by £500/pair (c$300)

Let me give my input if I may. I wear a hearing aid in each ear. My hearing loss is kind of unique. My right ear is worse than my left is. My right ear has significant hearing loss in the low frequencies so if you have a deep voice I can hardly understand what you’re saying at all. If you have a high pitch voice like Mickey Mouse I can much better understand you. My point here is this… It seems a lot of times people are trying to sell hearing aids or promoting certain brands and so on and the person doing this does not even have any hearing loss or has no experience wearing or using hearing aids as I do. I’ve tried several different kinds including a $5,000 pair which broke on me soon as I paid them off. Anyway back to my point… 98% of all hearing aids are no good for me and you know why? I’ll tell you why. Because they leave out the most important thing that I need in a hearing aid and that is an equalize to control and set my own frequency as I need it especially in my right ear. I “must” have this option in hearing aids or they do me no good. The user needs more control in hearing aids. I shouldn’t have to pay thousands to see an audiologist and have “him” set up my hearing aids on his personal computer. I can do this myself better than he can. I know what sounds clear to me and what doesn’t. I have a pair of earbuds and a music app which has an equalizer and I can set it where the music sounds completely “normal” to me. If I let someone else listen to it that has good hearing and no hearing loss they will say this sounds crazy. But to me it sounds perfect just like I never had an hearing loss at all because I can set what frequencies I need and how much or how little to make perfect sounding music. If they would only make this standard with all hearing aids it would be a dream for me. All you need is a descent app that comes with the pair of hearing aids and a 5 or 7 band equalizer to set for themselves. (PROBLEM SOLVED) Thanks

I wonder if phonak custom ear works with the marvel series or if those are too outdated. As a musician the streaming quality on these isn't the best. My hearing loss is progressing to the point where mass market earphones are going to not cut it for too many more years
@DrCliffAuD
@DrCliffAuD 8 месяцев назад
They will work with the Marvel line. The issue with streamed music is the acoustic properties of domes vs earmolds with venting. You need to trap the low frequencies when streaming to trap bass, otherwise it leaks out of your ears and music will sound flat. For example, music streaming sounds much better when you plug your fingers in your ears. Unfortunately most hearing aids need to be set up to prioritize speech not music streaming.

I have the Phonac Audéo P90s they are pretty good, but they frequently loose bluetooth connections and require repairing. Notifications shut them off and they don't come back on automatically. They don't automatically pair with my Mac Book, Ipad, just my iPhone. Evan connecting to my iphone is spotty. This is the only bluetooth device this happens with, not my car, ear buds, gps etc. My audiologist blames Apple, but I blame Phonac's programers.

I recently got the Phonak L90. I am not unhappy with them. Much better than my previous Resound. TV adapter is kinda neat but can be annoying. Works great if you don't want to wake up the house, but annoying if you're having a conversation while watching tv. Bluetooth connectivity is glitchy. Seems to randomly cut-out, and then needs to be re-paired, which may or may not work. And the MyPhonak app is weird on my older Android. Doesn't seem to want to connect. But then, sometimes it does. I can't complain to bad, these were provided by the VA.
