A CEO was given a bill for $10,000 and demanded why when all the mechanic did was hit a pipe with a hammer. The mechanic replied "$1 to hit a pipe with a hammer. $9,999 to know which pipe."

Reminds me of another HFY story when a human stops a ship because "something doesn't sound right" ... then after they came to a full stop she smelled around the engine room until she found a certain part, "this thing's gonna blow soon. We have to detour to a nearby station." The captain did so without hesitation and indeed as soon as they reappeared out of warp, that part exploded. But they're within tug range of the station and thus it's an easy tow + replacement.

That reminds me of my job at the botanical garden. New guys usually thought I just walked around staring at the plants doing nothing, that is, until I started coming to them telling them that, this tree is going to fall, that plat is infected with this or that fungus and it's going to kill the entire collection, this is going to flood, that thing is infested with this plague and we need X, there's a wasp nest on that tree, I order 45 tons of soil you'll need, and so on. It didn't take them long to start coming to me to fix any issue they encountered, even before their own foreman. Simply because they learned that no matter what it was, it'd be fixed by the next day.

Just carry something around in your hand. They'll forget you exist. The only thing they love more than calling out co-workers is keeping a respectful distance from work, or anything that looks like it. Walk around with something in your hand and walk like you have a destination in mind. They will begin to wonder if you still work there.

Simple Human survival instinct turns us into deities for a brief time. Stronger, faster, more creative, and sensory input maxed into extreme ranges. Just threaten a Human's life or loved ones and see a sudden god rise against the threat.

Pattern recognition and linear connection are the true strengths of the human brain. We have the ability to ask, “what happens if…?” We have the ability to test, we have the ability to recognize same result over and over. What happens if I put my hand on the flame? It burns and I get hurt. Will it happen again? Ouch, yes. And as society marched on and we became more detached from nature, those pattern recognition abilities lead to this.

I can take this two ways; as a bit of Humor about it being Humans who are considered strange by other species. Or the other way; consider this as a literal story, and the implications of that. By literal I do not mean real or as nonfiction, but just the logic of the situation. --- So first is the Warp Drive needs bio-filters? That could mean two things; it is very finicky and dust or microbes can cause it to malfunction...but it is not alive. So think of how sensitive today's Quantum Computers are; needing very cold temperatures, the tiniest of vibration would nullify the Quantum Entanglement so they also need extreme isolation from any source of vibration. No loud sounds witch even if the Quantum Computer is in a vacuum during operation, the sounds could still travel along even the smallest metal/other physical connections...wires, bolts, super expensive specialty Zip Ties etc. Okay if that were the only problem why not use Level 4 Biosafety CleanRoom Specifications? If improbably even THAT is not enough to keep the Warp Drive uncontaminated; could have a Factory Set Clean Room always in a Vacuum...that is Welded Shut, and accessible only via partial or full Robotic Remote Control Robots. Partial Robot Waldo is basically a Robotic Arm that does exactly what your arm does in real time; it allows a surgeon to operate on someone who is thousands of miles away. OTOH if the Warp Drive IS alive? That would be intriguing; the history of it, why a living Warp Drive is superior to a nonliving one, the biology and unstated other Biological Parts of it. Neutronium Alchemist and its sequel does have Living Starships; they were created by Humans but are sentient and are intelligent...so they are not slaves but Partners with their Human Captains. As described they did seem to be mostly not alive; for Humans like a normal not alive ship, but they are alive and grow from an "Engineered Seed" that is planted onto a very large space rock that is known to have all needed Elements in it. So think NanoTeck Micro Robots that create a sort of Cybernetic Living Starship. --- The other thing is why Humans can in this story do what other species cannot; better observation skills, and instincts. An alien could have far better perception of smells or visual information or sound or ? but still be inferior to a Human in "Observational Skill" because that is part instinct and part Rules of Thumb, or Wisdom from Experience, or in some way an attitude of recognizing and reacting to what is actually important vs what is not important and can be ignored safely. So? To me the Aliens are the weird ones if they LACK instincts common for Humans. This story is not about Humans being better at Instincts and Observational Skill...it is all other species LACK the specific versions of them Humans have. So? I cannot imagine a biological lifeform that completely lacks instincts unless it is an engineered lifeform and its creators specifically made an effort to make it NOT have them, a weird spec that in most situations would be really dumb. The Aliens thus would have some type of instincts; what are they if NONE of them have the type of instincts common for Humans? I am puzzled by this mystery; I cannot imagine instincts that DIFFERENT.

Basically in this story our ability to see a face in a tree or cloud means we're capable of spotting things wrong with various biological and mechanical systems long before the issue becomes obviously a problem to the aliens, their AI and their scanners, with them and their AI's only noticing with the highest level scans on the best scanners already knowing there's a problem there while the human spots the problem with the mk1 eyeball or just feels it while running their hand along the wall. It's not that they don't have survival instincts but that due to them evolving on simpler and safer worlds all other alien species are more wired to spot problems like a corpse that hasn't moved in a day or a predator approaching without cover or camouflage. That's are the kinds of problems they've evolved to spot, even a young earth kitten without parents might do a better job than the alien at spotting the problem.😊

Although that 30 minutes bro i pray for you i also experienced the worst pain imaginable to man, i was playing paintball and got point blank double tapped right in the left nut the paintballs didn't burst (for thise that dont play it hurts much more when they dont burst) i had to crawl my way out of the paintball field and laid there trying to control my breath while cupping my balls curled up. I managed to get back up but felt like i was straddling something for the next 15-20 minutes. Never wish it upon anyone else
