@@Crazael There are some who say he did and some who say he didn't. Both with the same credibility. It is believable, though, since he really didn't want to drag the U.S. into the war, much less grab its attention. He stated in at least one letter, a couple of meetings, and several memos that the reason was simply because he didn't think Japan was ready to take on America. He wanted to secure certain supplies and supply lines first; ie, oil and steel. He wasn't opposed to expanding Japan across the Pacific, but he understood the power of a fully industrialized country like The United States. He wanted to poke it, but not until they were ready.

The admirals of the Imperial Japanese Navy did not want war with the U.S. as many of them especially Admiral Yamamoto had spent time in the U.S. and knew Americans. It was the imperial Army which ran the country that wanted war with the U.S.

I'd say there's actually at least six faces. There's the one you show the world, hiding much of yourself to diplomatically portray what you can mean to those you see. The one you show at work is carefully crafted to display and apply your talents and impress both employers and customers. The one you show your family exposes a lot more of your vulnerability, but still hides some things, things you don't think would be understood, or things you feel ashamed of. The one you show your friends lets a lot of guards down, exposing things you only show to those that've earned your trust, or things you don't like sharing with people who don't "get it". The face you show to only yourself is much more honest, though you still may try to deny things even to yourself. Then there's the face you show to your enemies. To the people you have no respect for, no love for, nothing but hate. This face doesn't just drop all the posing and positivity you try to show, it buries whatever remains. These people have no right to see your true smile; the only smile they deserve to see is one of malice. All your mercy, all your kindness and charity, everything is set aside until this foe has been dealt with.

Generally Humans are not a War like people. We save it as a last resort if talking fails, so hope that you have a charismatic ambassador representing you. Since once we get into a war that then involves us taking off our "Gloves" so to speak there's little we won't do agenist our enemy.

Three faces, with the third face, the one you show yourself being the truest one? Nonsense. Must be a xeno translation error. There is a fourth face, the absolutely truest face, and you show that face to no one, least of all yourself. That is the face that comes out on its own when you have nothing else left.

I remember some quote from history that I don’t remember exactly nor who said it, but it went like this: it is good that war is so terribly lest we like it too much. Might have been Duke of Wellington or it might have been an American Civil War General- my mind is old and losing its details. Seems to fit with this story.

I always find it funny in these stories where the alien council starts considering kicking out the humans for their "violent tendencies" when far more trigger happy species exist within their walls, and the only reason the humans retaliated in such a way is because they were faced with an apocalyptic threat after years of warning shots and insistent requests for diplomacy. Really rings to how hypocritical the interstellar/intergalactic propaganda machine is in most "human retaliatory action" stories I see. (edit, typo)

Well I was in the Planet Earth's most powerful Army and fought in a war we did not win. In the many wars my country has fought since 1971 when I last fought they have only won 2 small skirmishes in Grenada and Panama (was that a win?). ln the other wars we _could_ have won since then, at best all we can say is, "We left more wars for the future to fight again" as the fascist rulers of communist/democracy etc etc all danced.
