I’m in full remodel mode this year. Home prices are still very high here in Southern CA which means I’m staying put and spending the time prioritizing what I would love done to my house to make it feel exciting, inspiring, fresh and new again. Our house is very dull 60 ranch. Beige brick, white shutters with white wrought iron railing on a living room size to narrow 1/2 covered front porch. So after much pondering I am going bold contrast with a dark green. Sounds weird but looks good on the color wheel. Am I to far off base? This is our down sized house. Last home ever….when I say in the 80’s I’m not talking generations lol 😝

I painted my door yellow just a month ago, during the process I considered changing my mind because it just seemed so scary. Everyone in my family implored for me not to do it. I Went though about 5 samples not knowing which yellow. I ultimately decided on a flat "sunny Side up" by Behr Marquee! Now, everyone compliments it and knows my house by the one with the "beautiful yellow door". lol

Hands down the best design video I've ever seen. Thank you!!! Unlike others, who post random photos of houses with no specific information, you have gone to the enormous effort of including the paint color & manufacturer's name. The pacing of your presentation was also excellent, since it gave me enough time to both assess/admire the colors presented and to also grab a screenshot of those that I loved. This video is incredibly well done. You are informative and articulate, in addition to having a great design eye and educated advice to share. The production quality is broadcast worthy. I painted the exterior of our house last spring. Rough exercise in patience and physical exertion. I admire greatly house painters now. It's a tough job without a paint sprayer. These are wonderful ideas as always. I went around the sides of the house and painted at least 14 different samples of paint about 5-6 inches in places that were not easily seen by the neighbors. They all looked so different from the samples, let alone the paint chip. You absolutely must paint sample colors before making a decision!!

I painted my cookie cutter house last year. I refused to use greens, taupes, browns, greys. Ugh….all the houses in my neighborhood look alike. Instead, I chose the color Seapearl (a creamy white) and limousine leather (soft black) for the trim. My entryway is a little dark. I wanted to brighten that area with a bright front door color….Key Lime which also has a creaminess to it. I absolutely love my color combination and I no longer look cookie cutter!😊

Hi Julie. I’m a guy who is about to start on an exterior remodel of my mom’s house, for the second time I might add. The first being 20 years ago. I want to be an interior designer to relax. Of course I'd be a beginner but some of the houses gave me an idea. Like the black ink house with red trims and matching red furniture. Morning. Living in a HOA situation, I can't paint my home whatever color I want. I try to freshen the outside by planting colorful plants n changing the outside lights as well as pretty outdoor furniture. It kinda works! I'd have a blk n wht exterior if I could. Thanks Julie!

I still help my clients come up with some solutions using HOA approved color palettes, but sometimes in creative, new combinations. Sometimes that helps your home stand out without sticking out. Great ideas with the plants, they can’t do anything about that! Unless you go overboard of course 😅

I love all of the paint colors but I suppose it really does depend on the type of the house and where you are. Some of these colors look absolutely stunning in florida versus dc has a much more conservative look. Love love the content and I don’t even have a house 😂

Thank you for watching Juna! I love lime washed brick. I love original aged brick as well. I can always make a case for a facelift if you don’t love the brick color. In that case, the brick would act as a neutral and natural stone color to then layer on pigment like paint. Hope that helps! 👍🏻☺️

I love the bright colors of the front doors and would be open to most all of them with a fun punch of color in mind. My mother and I painted our house 18 years ago with a goldish yellow color which was very bright. This year I am looking for something more climate friendly but trying to keep a classic looking home, that would be sellable down the road. Some colors make your house look cheap which I do not want and trying to please everyone drives you crazy. I really wanted to use the same Glidden High Performance exterior paint since it held up so well and I do not want to have to repeat this job again, unfortunately the Glidden Paint Company has been sold and finding a really good lasting paint is not easy. You may want to focus on a good durable paint along with the beautiful colors.

Thank you for this video! We are looking for the perfect blue for our French-inspired farmhouse shutters. I am leaning toward a blue-gray, but I’m overwhelmed with choices. We are planning on white siding and have Acme Coventry Cottage brick for our wainscoting.

Hi Julie! Thanks again for another informative video. I live on a very busy road so my White House is looking dingy at the moment but not sure what would work best with a red galvanized roof. I’m in the Caribbean and that is the standard roofing material. Also would you recommend something like a textured paint (trowel on -stucco look)?

A warm neutral or taupey-green would look fabulous with the red Jane! Try some samples from these two sections. Good luck!

Again thank you for an inspiring video, quick question when painting the door do you paint the side panels too? We have a wooden door with matching side panels. Tempted to go green as we have green colourbond roof with cream stucco. (yes, based in regional Victoria, Australia)

I live in the country and am currently leasing a house that is white with black-shutters? But the door was left with just a paint swatch. It’s not a solid wood door, and it has a oval glass in the center- Could you please tell me what colors I could paint the door in that wouldn’t look crazy ,

I am loving all of your videos. When it comes to exterior colors, I didn't see any all brick homes with trim color suggestions. My home is all reddish/rusty brick and was hoping to see some recommended trim. Thanks.

OMG...go to 8:02...Julie, identical to my federal style house, painted a SW olive with deep SW blue-grey shutters.. I SWEAR same colors or effect at least, only... I chose that combination about 9-10 years ago!! Have to say the colors worked exceedingly well with our various trees... just gorgeous. Sold that house. (Miss my trees!!). But... Wondering what's next...because blue and grey are as overworked as 'Way Done' (if you get my drift., and no, never a fan)...so I'm liking bright sunny yellow this year.....oh, and pale coral too...Oh but I digress, apologies, this particular video is about exterior colors. To me, rule #1 is, remain in the wild backdrop. No billboards. No obnoxiousness. Invisible works when robbers can't see you as well....but the world is so artificial and crowded anymore.....so much better to let your home breathe nature as well. I'm not about color trends for my own choices 😁

That all depends on your design intent Kevin. Garage color can be treated like a statement front door- paint it to pop out or blend in 👍🏻

Hi Julie, great video! Our home currently has light cream/ tan siding, neutral stone detailing and brown (like a milk chocolate in color) shutters and front door. We’re thinking about giving the front door & shutters a makeover but can’t decide on color. Any suggestions!?

The exterior sounds lovely with so much room for a color refresh Talita! I would choose a natural hue from the stonework and let that be the guide. Perhaps a really warm taupe that’s a few shades lighter than the chocolate? You’ll still get the contrast, but the facade will feel softer
