I use a clear plastic dish sponge holder for the kitchen from the dollar tree. It comes with two suction cups and it has been in the tank for over three months. Hasn't let me down yet.
Brilliant! I was thinking the same thing lol. I brought the plant as an experiment. I wonder if it really help eat up all the fish waste, beside the nitrates.
Hey, I’m in Singapore right now and there is Pathos growing up a tree across the street. Some of the leaves are at least 24” long maybe longer! Also there are quite a few different cultivars of Peace Lilly. Some of the dwarf varieties stay less than a foot tall. Cheers, Chris
I use thinly sliced pool noodle to keep the roots in the tank but the leaves don't touch the water. It works great & one pool noodle makes tons of plant "floaties".
I've had golden pothos thriving submerged for nearly a year so far. The fish and shrimp seem to love it & I haven't had to do a water change in a good bit
I built a trickle filter on the top of my aquarium. It's full of hydroponic clay and has pothos, peace lily and lucky bamboo in it. Just a shop light over the top of those. The water feeds in at one side and out piping on the other returning to the tank. Great low light plants for sure!
I have been using both for a few years. I enjoy the way it looks and it gives me room for MORE house plants! 😊 I recently put two sprouted avocado pits being held by toothpicks up in my HOB. so the pit is kind of half in half out of the water. I must say I’ve gotten amazing growth out of one. The other struggled a bit for awhile but is doing better. Once they are too big I will pot them up. Nothing better than free plants you propagate yourself and they make my big HOB less noticeable because it’s filled with phothos, a nice sized peace Lilly that I have separated a few times, and the avocado sprouts( one is over a foot tall, but the trunk is still thin )
I also use sweetheart plant. Its like a pothos but has a hearshape leaf and comes in neon too. Plus the vines ares also mored redish pink and yellow. Quite bright and tropical.
Good video. Pothos are one of my favorite plants...so easy to propagate. I just got a new aquarium for my Beta, and had planned to try Pothos to vine out of the tank. Thank you for sharing!
I have 2 Bettas in a 10 gallon. In that tank I'm growing a small amount of guppy grass, pearlweed, anacharis, moss, Javafern, red root floaters, and Amazon frogbit. So far, my nitrates have been at 0 ppm for weeks. I have to actually fertilize the water so the plants don't die because the fish don't produce enough waste for them lol. So if you only have 1 Betta, the pothos might be enough to considerably lessen your water changes!
Great video. Love your house and decor! I have bamboo that's about 3' tall growing in my tank. Pothos and ivy. The bamboo has actually sprouted a new shoot in the tank. Going to try taking a section of my peace lily out and give that a try. Thanks for the video.
Currently have multiple cutting of marble pothos in my tank, as well as the wandering jew plant, and a peace lily... I shouldnt say in my tank, they are actually in a marina breeder box hanging off the back of my tank. I used lava rock to hold everything in place!
@@jeffalbillar7625 sorry for the late response, so what I did was I purchased the biggest hang on back breeder box I could get that uses an airline as the lift tube for the water (you don't want a crazy flow) I did not use the bubble counter that they commonly have either because it made the flow.. weird. Then, pick a inert substrate that's easy for the water to get through. I used lava rock.. finally figure out what you want to do, I found the best plant for this is peace Lilly. Easiest to maintain imo. If there isn't natural light near, you will need to provide light. (Any LED bulb that produces 6500Kelvin will work, I used a GE bulb you can get literally anywhere.)
@@jeffalbillar7625 no problem! I'd send you pictures but I moved and got a bigger tank and that no longer worked on the bigger rim.. it really helped me with water changes! I got to the point where all I needed to do was top the tank off because the plants were pulling sooooo much crap out of the water.
Personally, I've got some golden pothos and lucky bamboo in 1 of 4 compartments, of my 2 double sided HOB filters, for my 75 gallon tank. They just love the 4ft shop light hanging from my ceiling above my aquarium. Planning to let it go up the wall.
Ficus benjamina and ficus ginseng also do well. I fixed them to a fairly wide PVC pipe full of holes, on which I glued small java rocks. I don't mind some roots hanging in the water, but I also have pothos and other house plants in my tank.
I just started doing plants. I replaced all the gravel in my 55-gallon aquarium 2 weeks ago that had 7 mid-sized goldfish. Because I was losing my bacterial base, I was hoping to help it with non-aquatic plants in addition to those I already had in the water. I had a 10 foot pothos that I cut back about a foot adding 3 plants and a couple pieces of snake plant. The water looked beautiful after a week and the fish were happy, so I added a small spider plant that I was able to divide into 2 and stick under water in the back corners touching, but not breaking the surface of the water. The spider, which had browning tips when I purchased it actually looks healthier.
I've done this for...decades. Did Pothos and Peace lily for years. I can say..Pothos with roots in warm aquarium water and allowed to climb a wall next to a sunny window? Will grow the big adult foliage 8-10". Not quite the 20" or more of outdoor plants in the tropics..but still impressive. Right now I've got some things that are different like that. Hypoestes..the pink polka dot plant is growing well with roots in water,tops next to said window-lol. Same for African Mask Alocasia. Roots in water...tops above the waterline. Acorus is another good for hydroponics I have going. I want to add lemon grass. Something that can be top trimmed and used to add flavor to dishes. Finally for the moment?..Ficus "green island". I have it as a pot plant outdoors..took a 12" cutting. Ficus seem to take to roots in water,tops in air pretty well.
Pothos plant does grow full submerged underwater. I have pothos growing in my aquarium underwater & it's doing just fine. Only thing is that the growth is slow.
A lot of plants will, from what I've seen, the leaves start to rot, you trim them off, and they will grow back but in a different shape for the conditions.
Monstera and Spiderplant work great too. A list would be great btw I tried doing some research and that topic and it's not that easy to find good information on it
I split a spider plant and have it growing underwater. Is that how you did it? Mine looks good after a week, but another commenter said theirs melted after about that long.
How’s the maintenance? I have excessive peppermint and lemon balm outside and was considering planting it in my tank. Do you cut the flower buds? Or let it it do it’s thing without trimming?
I just added some sprigs of Pathos to my planted aquarium to see how they do. I have had Lucky Bamboo in there for several months now, and it is doing fine, but not growing a lot. Also, my nitrate level is almost always 0, but it will be interesting to see what the Pathos does in there.
I have orchids in mine, but there is a trick to it. Make a hanging basket with suction cups. Before putting in the aquarium remove any unhealthy brown mushy roots and nursery moss/bark. Put your orchid in the basket on the waterside with only roots in the water for 2 days. Then for 3 days keep it out of the water hanging on the non-water side. I have successfully re-bloomed my orchids this way. I have heard you can leave 3/4 of the roots in water and 1/4 out and the plant can live 24/7 in the water but I can't see how this could promote the plant to bloom again just my two cents from keeping orchids for forever.
If you grow it in gravel or lava rock with water flowing through it, it’s called Aquaphonics I think and you can also grow vegetables in there, cucumbers and beans and all kinds of stuff.
In fact you can grow pothos under water it's extremely slow growing, but it can happen. Michael langerman has videos, explaining on how to grow them under water.
Will the roots need to be trimmed if you are mounting them into your tank? I saw a cool Video with sweet potatoes as a nitrate combatant, but the roots needed to be trimmed back weekly

Would a 10 gallon tank be best for a peace lily start given they aren’t as deep as say as 30 gallon tank. Those as the two sizes I have and it seems that finding a peace lily start that would be tall enough for a 30 gallon tank will be challenging. We’re talking a fairly mature plant; wouldn’t you say? I put one in my Aquarium filter as a test, starting with only two leaves. It is now close to six feet long. So far no runners except the original vine. I'm gonna let it go as long as it can.
I personally have pathos under water it was just a experiment at first but the roots started to spread rapidly so I left it alone and one rooted into the rock substrate and one went to my sponge filter and well grew through it and out the bottom so I can say in my experience it does like being underwater as well
MasterOG I watched a video and the guy was like this is pathos in my aquarium and it was totally submerged. So I ran over to my girl friends house and got some pathos. I have put pathos I all of my aquariums fully submerged for the last 3 months. They are getting new leaves and the roots are fine.
I have had pothos completely submerged in one tank for 6 months now! It produced a few new leaves and is doing absolutely fine! I do inspect it often for dying leaves or debris. I now have them submerged in all my tanks.
My peace lily has been fully submerged for the past three months with only the white flower above waterline. It just died off the last week. Look great still though!
And actually I have Pothos completely submerged also!! Didn't know what it was until this video. It's been under for 2-3mo! You can CLEARLY tell what's grown submerged and what's not! If I could submit a photo I would show you!

And to confirm this I have a golden pothos that is now 9 months underwater I have some death but at the rate that it grows it's so small I don't notice aside from having to clean up
I have an African cichlid tank and use cichlid salt to create brackish water for them. I recently added Pothos, Peace Lily, and Mini Monstera. The plants appear to be doing OK so far, but was wondering if they will survive long term in the brackish water
I have a Peace Lily. While it likes moist soil the SO seams to drowned it and it yellows out. So this is interesting that like pothos it will thrive in water.
Yes;! You need to grow this in your aquarium: it makes it so awesome looking. LOL 😆 On a.more.seriois note- I never used silver pathos, which is scindapsus - not pathos. Pathos and scindapsus are both members of the Araceae family. Peace.lilies are also in the Araceae. I am currently growing peace lilies in my aquarium. I have also tried to grow philodendron another plant in the Araceae family; it doesn't grow as vigorous as pathos or peace lillies though.
Is the "red peace lily" or rather the red anthurium lily also a peace lily that is suitable for aquariums? Or is it just the white peace lily? Might be a dumb question but gotta find out:)
