The reason why clay pebbles are good is because they provide the perfect surface area for nitrifying bacteria to live which is the whole foundation of aquaponics.

This works well. I clip some net pots behind the mattenfilters in my tanks, drop plants in those. That works well. Another thing you can do if you're on sump filtration or a canister filter is plumb some of the return water into hydroponic trays or "dutch buckets", which are both really good options if your fish are harming the roots of your plants.

Im currently in the process of making basically a glorified gutter for behind my fishtank so the water from the pump runs through it before going back into the tank Your channel was a big part in me planning to do this in the first place But I also want to include a raised lid, as I need to stop the water from evaporating into the room but also need space for plants to grow

I wonder how aquaponics would be in a turtle tank? Turtle makes a huge mess which is partly mitigated by having a huge filter on it, but there's still more nitrate and ammonia than I want. I can't put snails in to keep the algae down because he tries (and usually succeeds) to eat them. He seems to absolutely not care about plants or their roots. He's an Asian flapshell turtle, and preferers either live foods, or turtle pellets. I don't like sacrificing live things to him, so he gets lots of turtle pellets, which he really likes. There is no arguing with him about eating those. Between the uneaten pellets, and the pellets which have been converted to poo, I'm wondering if it would be a good environment for plants. He has a full spectrum basking light which is a real champ at growing algae, but he doesn't like to bask, so perhaps using the basking space and the very bright light would be the perfect place to grow plants? I guess the only way to find out is to try, and this video has given me some ideas about how to accomplish that.
@dwsdarius
@dwsdarius 3 месяца назад
That sounds like it would turn out great, as long as the turtle doesn't develop an appetite for what your growing. The definitely produce enough waste

If you're keeping shrimp and other invertebrates, be careful with metal mesh for supporting your plants. Copper is the worst, but even overly high iron can be rough on inverts.

I can't seem to find information about the lighting time lenght? because for example vegetables would take anywhere from 12-16hours of strong leds, but an aquarium is more about 8hours of normal decent leds.. what would be the good timing of lighting?

Great idea on the egg crate on the brace ! Gunna give it a try on my 75. How would you say it reduces the ph with the clay pebbles ? I'm using some semi Aquatics now but they are not doing to great, didn't know about the light, going to adjust that but has no substrate just sponge media on a basket.
@dwsdarius
@dwsdarius 2 года назад
Thanks. I haven't found the clay pebbles to reduce to the pH by any noticeable margin. I think it takes a lot of that stuff to have that affect and I only have about 4Ibs worth. The pebbles aren't a necessity, they just keep everything damp

@dwsdarius

Some plants can't grow in aquaponics, I think euphorbia is one of them. For other toxic plants that can be grown in aquaponics, only the roots are in the water so it should be safe. However why there are hundreds of non toxic plants to choose from

Many house plants are considered poisonous/toxic to dogs and cats when they eat the leaves. Dracaena sp. are one of those considered poisonous, but I noticed you have one in your tank. Apparently poisons/toxins don't leach out of the roots into the water. What are your thoughts about using poisonous/toxic plants in aquaponics?
@bufficliff8978

It's fine. If your animal likes to eat plants then only use plants that aren't poisonous to them. No drama.

You reckon - this setup is better than having aquatic plants inside the aquarium?
@onehitterquitter2130
@onehitterquitter2130 Год назад
I think the biggest problem with not being abel to grow plants in your aquarium is. TIME. It takes time for your anaquarium to be abel to grow plants. Your tank needs to season its self. I converted all 10 of my aquariums to planted tanks. It took me two years to get all 10 to the point of being self sustaining. A seasoned tank can grow almost anything. All with no co2. Just sand, root tabs an fish waste.
