Hi and welcome to Germanyso. In this video I'm going to talk about everything you need to know to get internet at your home in Germany. I will talk about Telecom Vodafone pure and other providers and how to get an internet line to your place fast and painless.
Who is the best internet provider in Germany?
Well, that depends! The best internet provider is the one that works best at your place. Not all internet providers offer equal internet coverage in your region so better ask your neighbors what internet line they're using and whether that internet connection is stable. I personally had less great experiences with Vodafone in Berlin and then changed to Telekom. My neighbor is using PYUR and never had any problems.
What kind of internet connections are available in Germany?
- Mobile internet - though I'm not going to talk about mobile internet in this video. Please check the link in the description for a review of the mobile internet plans in Germany.
- DSL internet - a DSL internet connection is internet over a phone line. DSL is usually available if you have a phone socket in one of your rooms. The biggest DSL provider in Germany is Telekom. Other DSL providers are 1&1, PYUR, Congstar, Vodafone and O2. DSL is the most widespread type of internet in Germany.
- Cable internet - Vodafone is the biggest cable internet provider in Germany. This kind of internet connection uses TV cable lines.
- Fiber internet - fiber internet is the queen of internet connections, fast but expensive. Deutsche Glasfaser, Telekom and Vodafone all offer fiber internet connections in Germany. Please be aware that some deals are advertised as being fiber connections but then the fiber line stops in the street and the last distance to your place is over a different and slower line.
How to get internet in Germany? How long does it take to get connected?
Follow these simple steps to get internet at your place in Germany:
1. Find out what provider the previous tenant or the Neighbors in the same building are using. Staying with the same provider means there is a higher chance that the provider can activate your line remotely. If that is not possible a technician has to come to your place and that can take up to six weeks.
2. Check what kind of Internet is available at your place. Not all regions in Germany have equal coverage of DSL, cable or fiber internet.
3. Go to a comparison website like Check24 or the website of the internet provider of your choice and enter your ZIP code to check internet availability at your address.
4. Make a contract online and receive a Wi-Fi router. A Wi-Fi router is a little box that connects the internet in your home to your computer and phone. Most providers rent out preconfigured routers and ship them to you. It is also easy to buy and configure a router yourself. The provider will now send you a technician or just remotely enable the internet at your home.
How much does internet in Germany cost?
Unfortunately, home internet in Germany is a bit more pricey than in many other countries. I recommend at least 50 megabytes download speed for a small household. Prices start at 20 euros per month for 50 megabytes and can go up to 35 Euros per month for a 1 000 megabyte DSL line last time I checked with PYUR, one of the more affordable DSL providers in Germany.
