In more recent times JIS has changed a bit. The screws heads are deeper and closer to ISO standard to fit better with Phillips screwdrivers. Vessel and other Japanese screwdriver manufactures have also changed their tip lengths. Some now just mark all their drivers PH as they work with everything. Posidriv, originally designed by Phillips, is what most European industry uses these days. Also flat pack furniture Worldwide. Posidriv does not cam out (unless you use a Phillips screwdriver) and is more secure than JIS. It's about time the US phased out old style Phillips. In industry it's normally better to torque limit the tool not the fastener.

In a road emergency you can, and I have, dragged a Phillips tip across a concrete sidewalk to shorten the tip so it would fit JIS. Best to have the right tools but screwdrivers are cheap enough to be expendable.

Wow I was given my impact screwdriver in a blue case as one of my first tools 6 years ago. Never thought I'd see another person with the exact same one. Nice milwaukee too. Thanks I need to get those fancy JIS screwdriver.

Got a Vessel Impacta a little while ago to work on the infamous Honda/Acura brake rotor screws… it makes short work of those crews without damaging them. It’s one of my favorite tools ⚒️ to own.

The Phillips screwdriver was originally designed for the aviation industry. It was designed to cam out when it hit a specific torque so that you would not strip the aluminum screws that they used in the manufacturing of aircraft.

One tip... when using an impact driver never use more than a 16oz. hammer. You want the bit to turn, not crush. If you break bits your hammer is too heavy.

I was just about to buy the screw drivers from EBay because of another video you made and decided to do some research and ran into this video; first time I ever heard of JIS. I know its a small commission but I went through your link. I think I made the mistake on using Phillips on a piece a couple of weeks ago and ended up doing the slits on the screws to get it loose. I appreciate the content and other videos you made, keep up the good work.

Piss on big box stores except for supplies. One-click ordering gets me any tool I want and I don't have to waste time and money driving to a store that's wildly unlikely to have what I want.

I have been doing my research on JIS since I heard about it as well as working on a 1978 cb400T II. Now I hate phillips, so many things make sense now that I know more about JIS, and phillips has always frustrated me. I have found that the best way to spot a JIS screw is to look at the shape of the slots. Phillips is curved, and JIS is square. The JIS screws I have encountered don't always have dots or their so old or corroded/damaged that you can't see them.

Uh my snap on screwdriver that looks like a Phillips fits these old Suzuki carbs on the FA50 I've rebuilt like 5 carbs this summer I know a guy with a fleet of them. I checked the fitment of the screwdriver to the screw to make sure I wouldn't strip the screw head. So I'm pretty sure these early to mid 80s japanese carbs would have the jis screws yet it was a tight fit I never stripped a single screw and there must've been 12 each bike at least so 60-ish screws not a single problem

Do you think you could teach us (or maybe you know someone you could) how to cut and stretch a steel gas tank? I have a Honda tank on my Kawasaki and it is almost perfect. I just wanna stretch it about an inch at the bottom, half at top, and then braze/weld a middle section. I've been wanting to do this for ten years! Just need an example! Maybe some others out there like me too!?
