20 DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE USA & NEW ZEALAND | my real opinion moving to new zealand from the usa

There are so many subtle differences between New Zealand and the USA and after living in New Zealand for a few years now, I can share a few- 20 to be exact and my opinion on them.
My fiancé, dog (Mr. Barkley) and I made the big decision a few years ago to move to New Zealand for a bit of adventure and to get away from the city. This year we are focusing on a more minimal, calm, and healthy lifestyle (hence the farm house in the middle of nowhere) in preparation for starting a family in the next few years.
I have degrees in Holistic Nutrition and Psychology and I'd love you to follow along with us as I share some healthy habits, gluten and dairy free recipes, ideas on minimalism, honesty and hopefully a little entertainment as I document our journey=)

Fun vid. :) Returns - for non faulty items - you can almost always return if product packaging is unopened & it's fairly promptly after purchase. Most Clothing can be opened and tried on, but no tags/labels can be removed (+ items like swimwear and underwear and hats cannot be returned once opened, for hygiene reasons). Once other product types are opened it's rare to be able to return them just for a change of mind/don't like it reason, but you can of course return if they are faulty, incorrectly supplied/advertised or damaged on arrival. On the plus side - NZ has strong consumer protection laws, so if product fails sooner than the reasonable lifetime of product (due to manufacturing defect not using incorrectly etc) - you will be able to get sorted out - return back to where purchased from.

Yes power outlets can be that high, but that aspect depends on the house as most places I've lived in or been to in NZ these days, don't have them that high. Then I have come across what you showed us a number of times as I grew up there. I lived in a house once where it was much higher up. I love Christmas in summer. I freaken miss screens, and I grew up here. I remember screens as a kid, but this was in the 80's. It was mostly in my grandparent's houses there would always be a normal door and a screen door. As for the outlets no idea why they're that high, the older houses had them closer to the ground. But now that I have a free roaming bunny inside it's actually a blessing XDD
@michaelheliotis5279
@michaelheliotis5279 2 года назад
Yeah, there are a certain era of NZ houses (probably post-WWII) where screen doors were standard, but it was definitely some time ago as my experiece with a screen door is also from my grandparents' houses. I don't know when or why they stopped putting them in houses, but honestly with summers getting warmer and warmer each year, I wish they'd start putting them back in. Christmas at my mother's in Auckland is awful because you need the door wide open so that you don't melt, but then all the flies come in and harrass you. On the other hand, most of the people living in houses that already have screen doors are going to start... moving on soon, so a bunch of those houses are going to start coming onto the market.

@@Mcfreddo If it's in a resalable condition and within a reasonable time frame there should be no problem. I have found smaller places more encouraging of bringing things back if it's not right. Yes there is a consumer guarantee act. Goods must be of an acceptable standard and if faulty or damaged it is the business's responsibility to repair, refund or replace said goods. Some businesses may try avoid it but a politely informed email referencing the above act will get them to change their tune. Speaking from experience dealing a car dealership of all things-catastrophic engine failure they refused to pay for until i presented a quote, the law and that they would be receiving the bill.

As a kiwi from Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty, we have a lot of adventure tourism you come visit. Things tend to be expensive to buy because NZers generally equate USD to be 2X our money, UKP to be 3X too. New Zealand hasn't had much heavy industry to speak of ,to say from car assembly , locomotive assembly and light ship and boat production. Buying a screen door with damper and made from aluminum is expensive ,so kiwi's in the recent past have had strips of different coloured plastic at the front door to catch the breeze to keep flys away often seen in rural dairies(convenience stores). Perhaps the person who had that house built didn't want to bend down switch off the light (thinking outside the box).

We have a lot of older houses where original power outlets have never been moved when the place was renovated last, & elec regs don't allow them to be placed lower than about 300mm from the floor. One advantage with our outlets though, is that you can't put a plug in the wrong way round! Moringa - Just found your video, your lovely and very entertaining to listen to. Most Kiwis l know use bug spray applicators in our homes, they stop the insects from flying inside. If the insects make the mistake of flying in, they are desperate to get out!!! . Easi pesi . No screens, We love our open homes and spaces. Opening and closing doors, windows and screens is a pain in the butt, especially when you are a kid and you have half the neighbourhood kids chasing after you in a game of cat n’ mouse. It takes about three days for the spray to settle throughout the house before they work effectively, if you have a large house, it pays to site several cans in different areas of the house. Replace the cans about once a month. The spray is pyrethrum so is harmless to humans and pets. We use to use pyrethrum cans when we lived in the city. But now we live in an off the grid cabin in the NZ bush. I have screens on Everything! We have a lot of Manuka- silly me had happy thoughts of Bees and pots of beautiful yummy Manuka honey 🍯 Wrong - Wasps LOVE Manuka too. I’m sure we have every wasp species known to man kind. I’m hate wasps. We have bees too, and will be getting bee hives soon. I have traveled around Canada and the US a few times, and I swear the insects are much worse over there. I was horrified to see pumpkin coffee on offer last time I was in New York, yes l gave it ago - totally gross 🤮. Tried grits as well. Had to spit it out - seriously people eat that ??? Even with gravy? 🤮 I’m sure you will have your culinary horror stories to tell as well since you have been here 🤣🤣🤣 Love love love the American biscuits and gravy - yum yum yum 😋 genuine Mexican food, and BBQ rib 😋

There _is_ the katipō spider. It is black with a red wiggly stripe down its back, like a black widow. It is slightly less harmful than a black widow: A katipō bite produces the toxic syndrome latrodectism; symptoms include extreme pain and, potentially, hypertension, seizure, or coma - no human deaths have been reported from a katipō bite, but don'[t take that as a suggestion to pick on up with your hands. It doesn't seem to bite humans oftens, but there is an anitvenin available just in case. I don't imagine a small animal like a dog or cat would get off as easily as a human if bitten.

If you want to see large mammalian wildlife here you need to visit a beach in the south during spring or summer. Our sea lions are about the size of bears and not scared of humans. Females will generally ignore you but you do need to be careful of the males, who can get curious about humans. I've had them come right up to me trying to figure out what I was...

Please excuse the clickbait title tho, I promise the info in it is actually educational. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aNghg1Y-WIc.html

@@MorganMarieWolff Yeah the US spends a lot on lining the pocket of their politicians (directly or indirectly), you don't have to have high taxes to get good services, you just need to keep red tape and corruption down. NZ used to have higher taxes than Australia, but cutting red tape allowed them to reduce their taxes, I wish Australia would follow NZ's lead.
@robe2504
@robe2504 2 года назад
@@MorganMarieWolff Like about 70% of US federal taxation going on the military. Also the health insurance industry is like a whole layer of taxation between the citizen and healthcare service that produces nothing. All of the money spent on health insurance, insurance company profits, shareholder dividends and duplicated throughout the whole private hospital health care system is eliminated here, and all that money goes directly to the public health service. There is still health insurance, and private hospitals, which wealthier people avail themselves of, but this is effectively a form of voluntary taxation which gives those folks preferential treatment, but also removes their demand from the public health care system.

The best thing is the Accident Compensation Commission (ACC), Im a man in my 60's and I play football every Saturday and climb mountains and fly microlites, If I injure myself in any way at any time, all my medical costs including ambulance are free and I get 80% of my salary until I can return to work or am judged to be unfit to work. If I am badly injured I will recieve a lump sum payout for dissability. This is a scheme run by the government and funded by employers. Everyone paying staff is required to contribute. Its brilliant, no lawyers, making medical choices for you, no hospital fees, no liability if someone gets injured on your property, no lawsuits for injury and more important most folk are honest about their claims as there is a high trust model in place.
