Leah let me let you in - my secret! I wasted years of my life first half in the Corps fighting for someone else's "freedom" that never appreciated, later behind a computer, fixing corporations their crappy mistakes, working my butt off and DREAMING of woodworking. I'm almost 54, and yes, unemployed and still dreaming of a trade that, I reckon is too late for me. Thank you, your videos allow me to escape my reality, I should have continued my sheet metal mechanic trade instead of going into the service - but live and learn I guess. I love your videos, your simplicity in talking to us, not like other that place themselves in a pedestal and "talk down" to their viewers and like to show their toys! - A HUGE THANK YOU TO YOU and why not a long distance hug. I used to use that stuff all the time, and let me tell you, if you're an arts student, you've got to get yourself a can. (Sorry for channeling Leah's voice there, couldn't help myself). Seriously though, you can use contact adhesive to: • Mount photos, drawings, and paintings on matte board. • Bond pretty much any lightweight material to another to create cool still lives, sculptures, and set pieces. Adhere various foams to each other to create cool puppets and stuff. Mount pretty much anything to a sheet of plywood or melamine. And much, much more.

Yeah, Leah - contact adhesives are amazing. It's so easy to use them wrongly and think they're just like normal glue. I always used to think that as soon as it was dry it was useless and would slather on more glue. When the surfaces come together any pressure and impacts cause crosslinking so it gets even stronger so the roller is doing that, too, you know that, though. It's why you do the hammering when doing leather work. Great video - thanks for getting this out there.

My dad was a very good joiner (foreman) at the CWS Shopfitting in Salford, England. When I was about 14, Formica was a a new thing to diy and I was making a coffee table at grammar school. I wanted to cover mine with formica and I showed my woodwork teacher how I stuck it down with (Anglo) contact adhesive. This was new to him. That was about 1959 and the table's still in use! This was pouring adhesive that had to be spread very thinly using a “comb” made from some spare formica. Remember, once it’s stuck you can’t reposition - her in the u.k. we would say that “it sticks like s**t to a blanket.”
@gsf67
@gsf67 6 лет назад
It was very important that you explained that one must wait until both surfaces are dry and tacky, before sandwiching them together, I have found that that is something that many first timers or newbies don't necessary do. It was like that for me, when I first used contact adhesive, mind you that was thirty years ago, when I was young and impatient, and didn't bother reading the instructions.

Here’s a tip in positioning, I learned in Art School when using contact cement after the surfaces were covered with adhesive and was fairly dry. I would often use a sheet of paper to help separate the two adhesive surfaces initially. Once moved into a position I liked, I would then slide the paper sheet out so that the adhesive surfaces could bond together. Also this method allows you to make adjustments along the way if you slide the paper partially out one moment at a time, which is good if you are dealing with a really long piece. Hey Just make sure that the paper covers the whole area of adhesive, once it bonds it’s difficult to separate.
@femineity
@femineity 6 лет назад
Hi *chackokhan! So, what keeps the paper itself from sticking to the either of the two pieces that have had adhesive applied to them?
@chackokhan
@chackokhan 6 лет назад
Hi Femineity, the key is to allow the contact cement on the surfaces to dry first. It might be a little tacky but as long as there is no adhesive on the paper divider it will not bond to the surface. You can even use sheets of wax paper or parchment paper to make it easier to slide out between the two surfaces.
@jamesrossi8442
@jamesrossi8442 6 лет назад
I just posted EXACTLY what you said, saw your post and deleted it. Here’s the crazy thing...I Learned this in art school too! Sometimes you just don’t get it lined up right and once bonded it’s very unforgiving.
@josephefasciani7343
@josephefasciani7343 5 лет назад
@@jamesrossi8442 Good day! I'm a BC Dept of Labour 1974 Journeyman Carpenter, in the era contact cement became popular. Formica & Arbourite had become prominent for countertops and cabinets, in kitchens and bathrooms. In rural BC where I lived in the Interior, factory-made cabinets and shelving were not yet as common as they became after big box stores such as Home Depot came on the scene. It was fairly common for carpenters to fabricate kitchen & bathroom counter tops using Formica, or, more commonly, Arbourite. So I learned to use contact cement as the adhesive of choice. Its main drawback was its unforgiving nature if not done meticulously in correct order. It's very difficult to remove from your skin or anything else it came into contact with. The solvent used to clean it off was pretty nasty, so it was useful, but it came at a price. It's main negative was that it's pretty unforgiving, and we'd not yet learned the trick of using parchment paper between pieces.

This also how you apply Tolex Vinyl to Guitar Amp or Speaker cabinets but don't forget to use wooden spacers. Use the 3M 90 not the 3M 77 as the 3M 90 is High strength hold. High heat resistance maintains bond strength even after extended exposure to heat. If you had an Amp that had the 77 adhesive and it sat in the Sun light until it got hot the Tolex would bubble and if it was grabbed by the side of the cabinet the Tolex will come off.

I have always used contact adhesive where I wanted a strong bond, Leah. Bonding laminate to OSB or particle board, fixing shoes where the sole has come away from the upper, even recapturing my Mom’s car with a very cheap offcut of short pile acrylic blend carpet… I turned to contact adhesive for those jobs. Years later, they are still bonded. People comment on the carpet in my Min’s car because it is so bright and cheery. The original carpet was molded in 3D so I had to cut a number of flat sections and add each piece to the floor pans and cut and fold pieces to fit. It took an afternoon and it was worth it. I have also used it when upholstering chairs with new fabric as the material does not always form to the shape of the foam cushions. Some spray on contact adhesive allows you to get it just right.
@garybraches9936

I've also used contact adhesive to hold foam rubber to plywood base that I later upholstered. It kept the foam from shifting as I was stretching the fabric over it.

Before there were granite counter tops most homes had counter tops made out of a wooden substructure covered in laminate. Back then there were two major brands Formica and Wilson Art. Their different patterns and colors were in the hundreds.it was normally put on with the gel type contact cement and was very durable and sanitary. Usually you made the laminate oversized and trimmed off the excess with a router or laminated trimmer for a perfect fit. It can still be purchased today. I used s lot of it in my shop for bench tops and crosscut sleds even table saw extensions, anywhere you was a smooth, clean, durable, low friction surface that’s easy to clean and maintain. I’ve even used it to move heavy objects by placing two sheets face to face under the object to be moved and then it glides anywhere like it’s on ice.

This is so incredibly helpful. I come from a scenic carpentry and props background and we used contact glue for just about everything. I recently transitioned to contracting and I was shocked to find that so many carpenters or contractors consider it a “craft glue”. It is a little tricky indoors, but it’s super effective. Just don’t forget your respirator!

I am a Professional Carpet Installer and we did a job were we had to install carpet on the walls of a hall for sound in a School many years ago (to many germs now) but we used Contact Cement witch we had them color it so we could see it better also we got it in 55 gallon drums and we rolled the walls and the back of the carpet then we rolled the carpet up after it dried and installed it on the walls just had to have a lot of ventilation. Great Videos Leah

Thankyou for the demonstration. In the 1960's in the UK a product called Formica came on the market, a skin for cupboards and along with it, to apply it, came Evostick contact cement. It was a petroleum product very good and every wood worker or dyer had it. Then it was abused by teenager 'Glue sniffers and it was locked up behind counters in shops and slowly died a death. That is why it is no longer fashionable. The glue was superb and the newer versions are not as good.

Leah. We also put a bead of wood glue around the perimeter. Of course we tape the area off so that the contract cement is separated. With the contact in the middle and white glue around. It's almost impossible to delaminate.

Hi. I just wanted to to say thank’s for the great informative videos. I’ve watched a good few of them now and have taken on lots of tips and tricks. I love the way you get the information across without making it sound as though you are talking down to people. I for one will be checking out lots more of your videos. Keep up the good work and stay safe 🇬🇧 x 🇺🇸 👍🏻

"You have to read the instructions." Ninety-five percent of the guys watching this didn't hear that part. All of your videos are great: short, to the point, clear and concise.

I love spray contact adhesive! One of my big hobbies (that's been sleeping for a bit) is arcade controllers for gaming. Of course arcade cabinets use skins and overlays, and the desk that my desktop computer is on could use a really good top. Much like in the kitchen, my friends with pro skills suggest formica- it looks clean, and it's inexpensive. I'll have to remember that contact cement should serve me well down the road for future projects.

Love the stuff. Have to be careful with it. Awesome instruction. I prefer the spray. I am no carpenter but have ugly cabinets. So Thanks for the tip.

Its one way of doing it. Personally, I shove in 4 countersunk screws from the inside of the unit once its installed, (just make sure they are not too long!!). Zero cost, zero smells and easily removeable if ever you want to do a refurb by changing the unit doors and end panels for a different colour.
