One thing I want to get out ahead of right away: bell-shaped curves exist in everything. If you (or your child) finished Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts at 3 years old, it doesn't mean any proposed guidelines are wrong for the majority of the population. So, try and stay calm. It's just a video, it's just video games, etc.
I have a girl that is right now 6. I tried at ages 4 and 5 to let her try various things and they never really clicked with her. She seemed to prefer her tablet. I don't know if it was because that is what she was used to or something else. But now that she is 6 she is playing super mario world. It's been a great joy of mine to watch her progress. She can't beat the second castle yet but getting there has been a great journey for both of us. She sometimes asks me if I will beat a level for her. And I do sometimes do this but never a level that would allow her to save her game. I know, I'm a harsh one. But the catalyst for all of this was I was watching some of the mario maker streamers. She came and joined me and after about 30 minutes or so she said "I wish I could play that game." I flipped back on super mario world and she recalled me trying to get her into it in previous years. She hasn't put it down since. So even if they don't seem like they can quite grasp it keep trying. Those attempts are not a waste.
@@humphrex Shes 8 now and will be 9 soon. She never has beaten SMW yet but can make it to bowser fine. lol Has, however, beaten Mario 64. And upon her own volition like to restart her games and see how fast she can beat them. I got her a switch and she likes Odessy, SMM2 and Delux. She doesn't seem to want to branch out from mario games much at classic or current though. So it's still a bit of work in progress. :)
I have to say sir, I really love how positive and calm you are for every video. I've certainly learned a lot about SNES through your videos, but your personality and joy are what really shines through. Merry Christmas SNESdrunk, and have a great rest of your day!
Back in highschool I found Sanrio Smash Ball at a flea market and bought it just because I thought it'd be cool to own a Japanese super nintendo game. Didn't expect much from it after seeing Hello Kitty on the cover, but I was blown away by how fun it was.
Mystic Quest was the first RPG I ever played through. Honestly, it really helped me understand many of the concepts of the genre for the first time, and it inspired me to play all the other SNES RPGs, which I'm thankful for.
Same. As an intro-level JRPG, it perfectly does what it's supposed to do- introduce you to JRPGs. If I'd started off with FInal Fantasy VI (not that I could, since the fucking thing wasn't released in Australia until the PSX port) I would have been COMPLETELY overwhelmed. Plus it has large, colourful graphics that were quite impressive for the time (let's be honest, the enemy and especially the boss sprites are far better than any of the other SNES Final Fantasy games) and the soundtrack just kicks SO MUCH ASS! It gets so much more hate than it deserves.
Mystic Quest is by far a great game for what it was. The music is also fantastic and despite everyone saying it insults their intelligence they seem to fail to understand that its for people that have never played rpg games in general. I really recommend if you want something random with great music.
I know this video is five years old, but as a father, and a nerd, you sir are as good a person as I could hope to encounter on the internet. Thank you for your list, and the care and consideration you put towards your watchers and their families.
I don't believe I've commented on your videos before but, I just wanted to say thank you for these videos. I'm always looking to find games to play with my significant other, and while she can play a difficult game on her own, we really enjoy a casual, fun experience, especially in a co-op setting. This video alone gave me a few new games to add to my Snes Classic. So once again, thank you immensely, your content is definitely always appreciated.
if SNES drunk says to check this game out then I check out the game. if SNES drunk says to stay away from a certain game then I don't even consider playing it......it's that simple....
As a kid, I learnt a lot about platformers from playing Flintstones - Treasure of Sierra Madrock with my older brothers. It has many short platforming sections, is bright, and automatically shifts back and forth between players. The racing sections were tough - so that's where the senior player takes over.
You have really covered it all... as a casual (got 2 kids, no time for more than casual) retro gamer it is a joy to watch your videos. And your reviews are so spot-on and informative. You surely deserve all the high praise for your mammoth fantastic job. Thank you very much Mr. SNES Drunk!
I like this video because it makes me think back several years ago when I introduced my nephew and two nieces to the SNES. It wasn’t just one specific time or day but the first games they’ve each collectively started with were, all the Donkey Kong Country games, Disney’s Magical Quest series, the main four SNES Mario games (Super Mario World, Kart, All-Stars, & Yoshi’s Island) and I think they played Kirby Super Star too. And then my brother got my nephew into Bomberman and he became such a fan of it that when he received the recent Nintendo Switch Bomberman for Christmas he jumped for all joy.
That was a nice list, with it in no time any kid will be a SNES drunk, period! Merry christmas my drunk friend, I hope you have a great rest of 2018 and I wish you the best for your channel this 2019.
Merry Christmas SNES drunk 🙂 Another Tetris-like game for children could be tetris attack. Nice cartoon graphics, nice music, VS mode where you can send blocks to your oponent.
I never understood the hate for Mystic Quest. It was DESIGNED as an entry point to RPGs. Yeah, it's not gonna satisfy an RPG veteran, but easier games like it have their place, too. Plus, the soundtrack is absolutely amazing.
Some of the hate also comes from people who saw what Japan got (in this case, FF5) and were pissed that we got this game instead. See also, getting Secret of Evermore instead of Seiken Densetsu 3.
My parents somehow thought that Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts would be a great Christmas gift for 4-year old me. It was only about 25 years later that I finally beat it for the first time.
Would like to add Magical Pop'n; many opportunities to get extra lives and energy, colorful graphivs much like Adventure Island here, and overall is a pleasant playthrough.
Adventure Island and Super Adventure Island are excellent choices. The NES one was my "5 year old" self's favorite game and my non-gamer mum got really engrossed with it. Season Greetings and Happy Holidays!
Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Daiyouchienji is another RPG which is for younger players. The battles don't require math skills, as health is depicted visually. The characters were also (later) used in the Puyo Puyo series. It was only a Japanese release, though, so it requires a translation patch.
Merry Christmas to the SnesDrunk household! Good points and list, I've played some, I've owned some. I hope you keep enjoying to make these videos for us.
Great video man. My brother and I received our SNES in Christmas of 1991 as well. Im expecting my first born in March. I have a pretty decent game library and this really put things into perspective as how to introduce him to video games in the years to come. Cheers.
Thanks man, a great list with a few I didn’t know about! Was lucky enough to snag DoReMi Fantasy off the Wii eshop right before that went down thanks to your recommendation and it’s crazy resale price. Gonna try out a few more of those just for myself if anything. :P
I miss Super Tetris 3 (jpn) on the list, that game is a hidden gem. I played it way back in the SNES era and still playing it today. Love that game. Merry Christmas and thanks for all the great content you made.
Merry Christmas to you SNES Drunk! And I gotta say some of these ridiculous games are my favorites that I grew up with. Thank you for showcasing them and enjoy the rest of your day!
I love FF: Mystic Quest. It actually did what Square Soft wanted it to. It got me into RPGs. Then I went on to play games like Illusions of Gaia, Secret of Mana, FF III, and Chrono Trigger.
When I got my Snes when I was a little girl, I found Link to the Past was too hard at the time (as much as I loved it, I ended up watching my mom play it for the most part) I loved Mystic Quest though!! I am really glad you included it on your list.
Merry Christmas!! The SNES was the first game console I ever played on. I was about 4-5 years old and remember playing Super Mario RPG, Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Mario Paint with the mouse.Years later, I found out you can also use the mouse for the Japanese port of the Alice in Wonderland paint game.
_Yoshi's Cookie_ and _Wario's Woods_ were released for both the NES and Super NES, and both are solid puzzle games worth checking out if you're looking for a different experience that's still kid friendly. I'd probably recommend _Yoshi's Cookie_ more for younger gamers since it's simpler and cute while still being fun, but _Wario's Woods_ isn't terribly hard either and has great presentation.
I totally agree with mystic quest as a starter rpg. I played well after ft1, ff3, chrono and it was a breeze, but the hurdles I often hear about getting into RPGs are heavily muted in this game so beginners can learn the BASIC jrpg mechanics while getting to enjoy the story and not get bogged down overall.
To be honest I loved both Mario’s Time Machine and Mario is Missing when I was growing up. I knew it was flawed even then, but now who’s laughing when I clean up on scrubs in Geosense.
My first turn based RPG was mystic quest. The music has stuck with me for over a decade, but man what a slog to get through. Slow game, but important for my childhood.
Tyler Remy It was mine too. Played it first back in like 97/98, as I always got a new console one generation late. Like he said, it’s great for beginners, super simplified, but not a bad game. Music was the best part in my opinion.
Interesting list, since I have a young nephew to introduce to gaming. I'd suggest Arkanoid, Mario & Wario and Goof Troop. Kid Klown in Crazy Chase is tough but charming, and I loved it as a kid.
My older sister actually played Sanrio World Smash Ball on an emulator many years ago. She was having a hard time in the single-player mode since she had no idea how to do the power smash. Too bad we didn't have two controllers back then, otherwise some versus play would be possible.
Nice list drunk. The only problem i have found with kids nowadays is that they generally have really low tolerance. With my niece for example (she is 6) i tried to get her into yoshi story for the n64. She didnt even completed the first lvl bcuz of the damn elephant with the stop sign. Instead of trying to figure out how to get through, she just left and grabbed her tablet to play some roblox and minecraft. Im going to sound like a boomer here, but these kids nowadays got a different wiring. Maybe the best way for kids to get into these games is to find a way to trigger their interest in the most genuine way possible, but i dont know how to do that. If you have had some success, pls let me know, cuz ill be a father soon and i would love to see my daughter getting into these games that are so special to me
I had a combo Tetris/Dr. Mario cartridge for the Gameboy that I played the hell out of as a child. What a great combination of two awesome puzzle games. I really feel like these two are a perfect pairing, because if you somehow got sick of the one game, you could switch over to the other for a refreshing change. Both games had absolutely amazing and infectious music on the Gameboy; to this day, I still prefer the Gameboy music over any other version I've heard. This cart is a great example of how good software can make lackluster hardware endlessly enjoyable. Or maybe I'm just pushing my nostalgia a bit too hard. Also, I got so used to playing Tetris on Gameboy that seeing it with colored pieces really threw me for a loop. I didn't really get the point of the colored pieces because the colors didn't matter at all.
Merri Xmas drunk what a great idea for a vid Still remember opening my snes for Xmas as a kid your right though seeing the sheer joy in kids at Xmas ad an adult Mario paint also has that fun fly swatter game Smart ball is a great game for all ages The jp version jerry/jelly boy even has a proper story but either version is fun
Wario's Woods is a very good Tetris clone with a good multiplayer mode. Also, Goof Troop is awesome in multiplayer! I have Super Adventure Island and it gets very hard pretty quickly. Also, if you die, there's no continues. You'll have to start all over again. Could be a tough cookie to sell if your kids grew up on modern games!
Hey Drunk, I have notifications maxed for your channel, but I've only seen the last 4 videos because they came up in my suggested way after they were posted.
