As a brazilian gamer from the 90s, I feel that it's important to give a background fact of why South America loves Top Gear more than other racing games from this generation. In the 90s, Nintendo didn't had an official representative here, so most SNES had to be imported, which in conjunction with all the economic issues of the time, meant videogames were a luxury. But some people figured out they could rent out time for kids to play their videogames, and that turned into a large cultural background that we had large shops with nothing but TVs lined up with a console in each. The reason why people loved Top Gear at that time, is because unlike F-Zero, you could play it with a friend. And that means they could combine their allowance so that instead of each one paying to play for one hour each, they would play together for 2 hours. This kind of rent-a-time arcades are unheard of in north america and europe, because consoles were relatively cheaper, and even poor families were able to pay for them.

@josephking1502 10 месяцев назад
In the 2000's North America had LAN centers. Pretty much the same thing you are talking about but with computer games. Gaming PC's cost like $1,000+ back then. Not only was it cheaper to play at LAN centers (like $2 an hour) but it made it possible to play computer games with friends. Most popular game was probably Counter Strike. Some LAN centers also offered console gaming systems aswell...

@NibelungJ
@NibelungJ 10 месяцев назад
@@lextor4712 Not really, the N64 fever was Goldeneye and Mario Kart. At the time, people were playing FIFA and Winning Eleven/PES for soccer games. Mario Party got banned from my local arcade after 4 joysticks destroyed in one week, and we didn't had Smash.

Me and my dad OWNED one of this places, it grew up to 36 TVs, and it lasted all the way till the PS3 era, it became cheaper to run with CD based system with pirated discs, cause cartridges where EXPENSIVE and youll need to like a dozen of the popular ones (we sell them after a while when people stopped playing them, also N64 was a problem cause people wanted to play 4 at a time and the controllers kept breaking, matter of fact after the 16 bit era the only controllers that where durable where the dreamcast ones

When I was a kid growing up in the 90's I lived in South Lake Tahoe California. We had a video rental store called Video Maniacs that closed down and remodeled one year. I think in 94 0r 95. But they closed up for several months and had this big grand reopening. Much to the children's surprise the major remodel they did was committing a huge chunk of the store, maybe an entire 3rd of it, to rows of Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo consoles each connected to their own 13inch color TV. Then there was a room of its own with a projection screen, probably 6 foot by 6 foot and a stereo surround sound home theater system. In here were both a Genesis and Snes as well. The idea was that anyone with an account could rent a game for a dollar for the afternoon and play until the store closed if they wanted to. It was hugely popular for a couple of years. But by the time the Playstation and N64 generation hit they only put out a single PSX and a couple N64s. And the big room had an Atari Jaguar. Nobody really cared as the novelty wore off after some time during the 16 bit generation and I think Video Maniacs shut their doors in 1999 or the early 2000's but I always wondered where they got the idea for this from. Guess the owner must have taken a trip to Brazil at some point in the early 90's and was inspired... but as a kid from a poor family in the 90's, I loved it, and played so many matches of Mortal Kombat 2 there.

Here in Argentina during the '90s we did not have access to the consoles or the original cartridges due to their high costs. Most of us had some clone of the Japanese Famicon (renamed "Family Game") and some clone version of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive (in my case, the "Super Senga"). Same for the cartridges in both cases (clone copies that came without a box and without an instruction manual). Since there were no SNES clones, only those who could afford it (a small minority) were lucky enough to have it. I remember that "the rich kid" in my class (son of a businessman who owned a supermarket chain) was the only one who had SNES and Game Boy. For most of us it was an unknown (and much desired) world. The same thing happened to us with N64. That's why I appreciate these videos, now that I'm older (I'm currently 36) I'm discovering the wonderful world of the SNES, something I couldn't do as a child. Thank you!

Super Metroid left an indescribable impression on me when I played it at like 11 or 12 years old, and it easily still holds up today. The atmosphere, non-linear progression, graphics, that sense of triumph when you discover new upgrades and abilities that allow you to access new parts of the map. That heart breaking moment at the end when you realize the magnitude of your new friend's sacrifice. I'll never forget that sound. I will forever sing its praises. In my opinion it's the greatest game ever made. The SNES really is the greatest console of all time, and I've played them all.

I can go months, even years without thinking about Chrono Trigger, but then I hear simply a few seconds of that soundtrack, like at the end of this video, and it really transports me. Not to my memories of first playing it, but to its actual world. I listen to other OSTs more, and that may be because it’s simply too much to handle as a casual, background listen. There is something so evocative and emotional about it, like fantasy made real. Such heart and soul to it. Still genuinely so moving. Then I remember the lone sound of that swaying, ticking clock. Not saying anything remotely new here, of course, but god, what a masterpiece.

I played it for the first time very recently and I was absolutely amazed of how forward thinking this game is. The mix of genres, the simple and intuitive UI, the easy way to save and how fast you can play it make it feel like a game made yesterday. And yes, u can be a bit easy, but when you don't have much time can be a blessing. That's without mentioning the astounding music and the timeless pixel art. I'm really surprised with this game, to me it should be even in the top 10 of the SNES.

I wouldn't say this one is an essential, but I still recommend playing it. Super Adventure Island II is an plattform-adventure game (no shit), one of the last in the Adventure Island series until Adventure Island the beginning came out as Wii ware in 2009 Tina and Master Higgins went to their honeymoon, but when a tropical storm hit their raft, they got separated and both lost their memories. Tina was about to marry another man when a hawk kidnapped her, and after Master Higgins heard her screams, he embarked on an Adventure through different islands to Chase the captors, recover his memories and save his girl It plays pretty much like Zelda II, since the main weapon are the swords, though you can choose some others like the boomerang, a shovel or your bare fists, every Island is very unique and different where you will find the right equipment to go thorugh it , get the loot, beat the boss and find your way to the next Island I feel the need to let more people know about it and play it since I feel like no one has played it, like no one talks about it, no one even mentions it, and therefore no one makes romhacks for it, just a spanish translation patch, which I find weird for such a solid fun game, despite being so different to its antecesors

@@joyasmusicales603 Certainly, the Mega Drive undeniably boasts an impressive library. The hardware that Sega assembled in 1988 was groundbreaking. Yet, for me, the Mega Drive's narrative is rife with "what if" scenarios. What if the Mega Drive had found success in Japan akin to its triumph in the USA? Imagine the array of sensational titles we might have witnessed. What if there hadn't been peripherals like the Sega CD and the 32X, both with tepid support and treated merely as technological curiosities? What if Sega had introduced a genuine hardware upgrade mid-life for the Mega Drive? It could maintain backward compatibility with old titles, but all new games would be tailored for this hardware update, perhaps incorporating the NEC V60 or Motorola 68EC020. And what if Square and Enix had thrown their support behind the Mega Drive? Countless fantastic titles might have been developed. If Konami and Capcom had treated the Mega Drive on par with the SNES, how different might the gaming landscape have been? The fascinating aspect is observing the current Mega Drive community actively exploring these "what ifs," developing games, and rectifying poorly executed ports from that era.

Both of the Top Gear games are available on it on multicarts with 12-19 other games on them for $20 U.S. or 25 CAD each and the systems start at $60 U.S. or 80 CAD for handheld and the handhelds have 12-18 Capcom or Taito arcade games built-in or the console version starts at $100 U.S. and supports 2-4 players on games that allow it.

Great video! Honestly, this is a rock solid list. Heck, you could probably even have a sequel to this list and still not even scratch the surface of all the fantastic games on the system! The SNES library is just that amazing! This is one of my personal favorite retro game systems and I feel like many SNES games have aged even better than most early 3D games on the N64 and PS1.

The SNES was the pinnacle of the old world 2D gaming experience. You finally had the graphics and processing power and amount of buttons to properly recreate what had only been in arcades. I got an N64 in 1997 and a PS1 a couple years later but never played them much for long, I lost interest in games when things went 3D (and games took months to complete). I still play SNES games though. Though my GBA SP gets the most use.

There's no competition for me.. The SNES is my favorite retro game console of all time. While I imagine nostalgia plays some role in that, I owned nearly all of the game consoles following it up until (and including) the PS2 and Xbox 360 (excluding the Sega Saturn and all of the low production consoles like the Jaguar and 3DO), but none of them had the impact, fun, or memories that the SNES did. There just wasn't any other console that had games that transported me into another world like so many titles on the SNES did (A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 2 and 3, Chrono Trigger, Act Raiser, etc). It will always be the golden era of gaming to me, despite also having so many wonderful memories attached to other consoles and games like the N64 and Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, and others.

It's just kind of redundant to include butchered console versions of arcade games. The snes version has like half the enemies on screen at once compared to the real version, same goes for final fight. And it's so easy to play the real version these days, either on the capcom beat em up collection, or (even better)emulators like retroarch or mame.

Also the savestates don't often work and I found a skeleton key as a random drop in the shelf found in level 1. This probably can skip a boss fight at the very least and was the only time I was able to get that luck since at least 1999. @@JohnnyProctor9 I like the story because it felt more grounded and political. You get to see all these powerful figures scheming and making advances, while the good guys try to deal with their current situation. I actually thought the map screen was really satisfying; felt like I was watching a history documentary or something (and the music rocks). But I can understand why some people are put off by the amount of exposition. I don’t agree that the characters are more generic though. Because of the conversation system, the characters are a lot more fleshed out and interesting than the previous games. Not to shit on those games because they’re underrated. I also highly recommend playing the whole game cause the story as a whole is really good and has a lot of tragedy and elements fitting of a war story. Awesome video as always! It's sad to me not to see Terranigma one of my favorite games of the SNES as the prefered choice of the three. To me Terranigma is a trip of emotions and by the end of it I even cried in the end and feel really empty. The OST, the adventure and the story is top tier. I don't know if you have finished it but if you didn't I really recommend it!

Fun fact- Shinji Mikami, director of Resident Evil 1, 4, Godhand, and many others, helped design the SNES Goof Troop game.

You could have doubled the size of this list and there would still be many titles left over that would deserve a mention. Just an amazing library. Hope you had a great day!

@@voltcorp That's what I get for having the habbit of closing a video once the end monologue starts. I wish he would have shown it in the main part of the video, everything that comes at the end of the video is just noise. I don't get why people still do the thanks for watching stuff 15 years later.

super metroid is THE best game. All the secret passages and short cuts that werent obvious but werent too randomly obscure to figure out, plus the level design having areas that you had access too early game but couldnt traverse without the right suit or weapon that gave you something to strive for without just holding your hand doing waypoint questing.

Even though the SNES has been around over a decade longer than I have, it’s my favourite console of all time, thanks largely to the sheer amount of quality games.

He covers so much and so well while keeping the video to a reasonable length. Yes, Killer Instinct has an amazing soundtrack and I would have mentioned it if I made this video but I didn't, it just rubs things wrong when you complain about an omission to a very complicated, information dense video without saying that you appreciate the video overall. Let's make it a habit to always compliment the effort of somebody whose output we enjoy before adding our own personal criticism. Right? "Great video, the KI soundtrack deserves attention" kind of attitude. SNES drunk rules and is a gem for us all, we can either take it for granted that he knows this or we can be another addition to his vault of appreciation

Great video. You have some really good taste in games and you're aware of some real gems most don't know about. Seeing things like Metal Warriors, Space Megaforce, and Gundam Wing Endless Duel on here was impressive. Some titles I wish I'd seen on here: Side scrollers: UN Squadron Fighters: Claymates 33 1/3 Beat 'em ups: Maximum Carnage and X-Men Mutant Apocalypse Random gems: Sky Blazer Adventure: Act Raiser

I completely forgot about Metal Warriors ! Oh my god, I can't believe It's been THAT long since I've even thought about that game !! Metal Warriors has to be the game that got me interested in "Mech" games and eventually into the Armored Core series for PlayStation 2. Thanks again for reminding me! 🕹️

Cute you showed Soul Blazer over Terranigma but that just shows you're a bit out of touch here. Soul Blazer is junk and Terranigma has famous music and is the king of the series but we'll just go ahead and look that over?

The SNES is such an awesome system. You can easily list * 5 games that are "among the best/most influential video games of all time" * 10 games that deserve to be "top-3 on the system" * 25 games that deserve to be "top-10 on the system" * 100 (150?) that are "great games still worth playing" U.N Squadron, Actraiser, Rock 'n Roll Racing, Lost Vikings, Wild Guns etc etc. Sure, many of the games are ports, but the point is that there are so many good games that almost no matter what kind of list you make, you'll end up with the feeling that amazing games that deserved to be on the list were left out.

That's a good way of putting it. Hard to squeeze 100+ quality titles into a video where 50 games on an "essentials" list is already pushing it
