It's really interesting when you talked about the question "How can I find time to learn a language when there are so many other things I'm stressed out about in life". For me, language learning is a sort of therapy for me. When I want to relax or if I have something I'm stressing out about in my life, I usually turn to studying a language as a sort of "safe space". So maybe that mindset may be able to help some people who also struggle with this idea. Studying a language helps me calm down and helps me take a break from the outside stresses or worries. ❤️

Let's not confuse being introvert with being shy. Introversion means that you need to spend a lot of time alone to recharge your energy in order to engage in social interactions.

You're so right with that one! I'm an introvert but I still love interacting with and meeting people, but only though if I get plenty of time in between to do something alone like going for a walk or reading a book to recharge my batteries.

I have heard , that you reach level b2 in a target language you can't forget it. While you learn a new language your aim should be to get this level. Once you reached it you can move on to the next one . This previous language won't get lost, you should just refresh it , if you need it. What is your opinion about this theory? Thank you for this wonderful video 😊!

Difficulty with mastery of a non native languages is a factor of the gradient between the two languages. Similarity between languages like Spanish and Portuguese really helps transition from one to the other readily. I had little problem with Dutch after being fluent in German. The more languages you know the easier it gets to master others. After you are good with 7 langauges getting to 21 is a walk in the park . I am talking from personal experience.

I made my own experiment where I started to learn 4 languages at the same time when I was 38. It took different time to reach the level where I could speak and use the specific language as a tool to learn the language itself. Thus I disagree that you have to learn one by one. In my opinion you will loose the time for collecting experience. After 3 years I had the same experience for each language. When I will learn them one by one it takes much longer. I also used a method to learn one language from the other. For instance when I could speak basic Russian I found Russian teachers speaking also Spanish and I learned Spanish and practicing Russian in one lesson. Otherwise I agree with all what I heard in this video. Very useful and important tips.

Chinese dialects, Vietnamese, etc. borrowed mostly from Middle Chinese before 1500, so all of them had words + similar pronunciations especially nouns in highly or semi formal register levels. Example-country, nation state-- Cantonese guok, Hokkien gok, Hakka gwet, etc. vs. post 1500 “Mandarin” simpler guo.

Long conversations are sometimes easier than short conversations, as Luca says, and it depends on the topics which you are taking about! As a researcher, I find that many non-native speakers of English can be very good at talking about their research in English, but sometimes struggle when they have to talk about a simple but unfamiliar topic. Same goes for me when I speak other languages.

She can't handle a conversation, after a few seconds she turns back to English, which is her comfort zone. She wanted to speak French but she had difficulties. Probably she performs better in other languages, I don't know. Luca is amazing, he started in Spanish and finished in Spanish, showing he can really speak the language

When you speak 10+ languages as they do, the ones you’ve recently been working with are in the foreground and come out readily, while others which are in the background need a bit of warming up before they start to flow. It’s a whole different ballgame compared to just speaking a few languages. One language can temporalily block another from coming out, for instance. It’s the price we pay for wanting to expand into linguistic infinity. Can’t have it all at the same time.

That response from Lindie on "The 3 mistakes one should avoid if one wants to be a Polyglot" was perfect! Coz the question was as funny as "I want to be a businessman what mistakes should I avoid?" without actually knowing "what am I actually good at". Be it Lindie, Luca, or someone like Steve Kaufmann or Tim Doner - you all learned languages not to show the numbers but because you were passionate about languages and words. It's funny how some people want to learn languages as some competitive sport. Thanks much for this video, Luca! As a language learner myself, I could pick many good points to learn a new language faster.

Those of us who work as designers/illustrators etc. are very lucky to be able to listen to podcasts in our target language while working. Otherwise, at least that's the case for me, it's unpractical to devote 2-3 hours in the evening to do that instead of relaxing. During washing the dishes or cooking would be another good idea. Also, another point: if your goal is to go around saying I am a polyglot, be prepared, nobody cares. On the contrary you might end up being the annoying one at the table. But on the other hand, learning a language will quite often lead to the discovery of common interests between people, and when that happens it's absolutely exciting! Ε, και αφού μαθαίνεις και Ελληνικά ρε Luca, μπράβο γιατί τα λες ωραία! XD

Now I am struggling with leveling up my english learning. I need to speak more and write professional texts. That will help me in the future job. In addition, I have to build up my vocab tp expand my knowledge, I think it will help other skills for sure. I remember images better than different methods like listing words in order. So I am trying to attach images when I am trying to understand new vocab. To sum up, I will use new method for each stage and when I feel I actually need it. It's also essential to keep motivated when learning language.

Great that you also talk about all the "soft skills" connected with language learning, e.g. integrating language into everyday life, organizing your life, "getting out there" and speaking to people. Would you agree that there is much more discussion of "hard skills" e.g. "chunking" rather than "soft skills"?

Btw Luca, we say in Spanish "hablar hasta por los codos" which is equivalent to be like a chatterbox. your Spanish is very good!

On using the same system to learn different languages... I live in Japan, and I find that none of the big names in language are big names in Japanese. I would say that is necessary to consider which parts of the language people from your language struggle with. Like, English speakers often struggle with tones in Chinese, so I think you need to go hard with listening and speaking from day 1. For Japanese, the word order is a different, so going in, I hit the sentence patterns hard.

I've taken my first 'rest' in language learning studies in nearly 12 months. I've got to prioritise cardio / exercise at the moment. I find it too difficult trying to fit in 1.5 hours in the gym + 1 hour language learning during my 5 day working week. In the weekend I can do both, it's much easier.

Exactly what I did too. I find its all about prioritization. I was able to fit in both during my weekdays, but one of the two is always gonna be hindered, and with any skill a lot of hours is required, so decided to focus on health ans fitness instead.

As some You Tubers say you can use any situation to learn, as to find gym machines, exercise actions, exercise clothes, etc. in your 2nd language. Good luck!!

@@samaval9920 I don't remember writing this post two years ago, although I do remember spending a lot of hours at work getting burnt out. My fitness is now back to where it should be, and I listen to podcasts in my target language when I exercise now. :)

Music definitely is a good way to learn a language but it depends on how you use it and also if you are willing to actually learn a text by heart. It cannot be the only medium to learn but you can easily learn structures by heart that way

I have a frustrating experience. Not knowing where to begin or hitting a plateau can feel demoralizing and make it hard to hit the books and study like you know you should…Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships.
