Thanks for this comparison. Our mower died at the end of the season last year beyond repair, so I will be in the market before spring time. Im beginning to lean Ego, my old mower clumped like that at the chute and it was a Toro gas powered. But man she ran for 12 years before the motor gave out.

I have the same Toro when it first marketed. I found out when you install the bag to the mower the bag pitch is high at the top end of the bag. This is why the grass bunches up. All you have to do is push rear of the bag down so it won't pitch high. Make it horizontal. This way the grass won't slide back down into the shoot where the mower ejects the grass clipping into the bag. This will help out a lot. I love my Toro. It cuts awesome. I rarely bag my grass clipping. I just mulch it.

Enjoyed your review. Last year I bought the Ego Select Cut XP which is a $100 more than the Ego you reviewed. It has more torque and 1,200 watt motor with higher RPM. Noticed you are using the economy blade which has a lower lift/suction and therefore less drain on the battery. If you use the mulching or the optional high lift blade, it does a great job cutting especially if you keep it on the shorter side. When I try and cut KBG at over 3" I sometimes notice the grass will start to lodge but I think that has something to do with how I've potentially over fertilized the lawn. Overall, glad I chose the Ego over the Honda since Honda has now exited the lawnmower market.

I had the toro and said the same things...I might have been a little harsher on some things but I got roasted on instagram for my take on it. SO glad I am not the only one. I have the ego now and I love it.

I just bought an EGO 2114 at Lowe's for $400. Not self propelled. High lift Gater type blade to mulch. Came with a bag, 6 ah battery and charger. It's a beast. Mowed a humongous yard with 2' high grass. Cut on high it could do it with 2 passes. Threw the battery on my old EGO weed eater and cut in sections and then ran over it with the mower. Today I went out early to finish up. Grass still wet with dew. Large clippings on top of grass to mow. Mulched it all in one pass. I actually just wanted the battery but it was $350 so, for $50 I got the mower and the charger. Glad I did. I will have to try the bagger though and see how that goes. Mostly fescue around here in Indiana. Also, I was cutting down weeds with 3/4" stalks. No problem.

I had a Toro gas personal pace that was getting old. Sold it and went with greenworks mower after looking at ego and toro. The greenworks has been fantastic. It comes with 2 batteries and it automatically switches over when one runs out. I can complete my full quarter acre usually on one battery!

What I do to pull the clippings bag on my Ego is to put the handle in the forward position (not all the way to the storage position). It’s super easy with the quick release lever and takes the crossbar out of play.

Interesting. I have noticed the same, but I really do prefer the cut of the Toro. I still use my Ego for the backyard and it's short person friendly LOL

I have an older Ego, and the self propel without the blade spinning is one of my favorites too. I can plop my trimmer and blower on it and wheel them around the yard haha

Beautiful lawn. Nice to see a review where the reviewer is actually cutting grass. Most reviews I've seen are people cutting weed grass. I wanted to see how electric handles actual plush grass. I have too many batteries for EGO to go to any other brand at this point. Still undecided though if I'm going to get a backup electric mower. Really only want it for cutting after it rains when the gas zero turn is a little rough on the grass.

I guess you mean base model being self-propelled. I just bought the EGO base model regular push mower for about $500 (just couldn't spend $800 for a push mower). I've been weening off all gas powered "stuff" for a couple years now and settled on EGO. Their equipment just works. I will say I'm not as happy with the cut as I thought I'd be and see similar results as you but it's good enough for me. So quiet too. I also LOVE the folding up and storage on battery operated items!!

I have the Toro, and if you use the hi-lift blade and not the mulching blade that comes with it, it’s a game changer. With the hi-lift blade the toro is awesome…

I have the hight end Ego. I don’t think the motor is larger but there is room for 2 battery packs with 2 5Amp batteries included and it has a variable torque motor that kicks in when the grass is thick. I also retrofitted a high lift blade that Ego sells for $49 and it made a huge difference in suction quality on those thick patches. I have a fescue/KBG mix lawn and couldn’t be happier with my setup.

I switched to the Ego this last year when I got a steal of a deal on a used one where the owner wanted to go back to gas. I have TTTF in Nebraska. I mow between 3-4” depending on the timeframe. One thing I’ve noticed is that if I want a cleaner cut (still not perfect), I have to bag and I have to mow slightly slower. Not a big deal as I like the convenience of being able to mow at all times of the day/night, and my yard is only 4k sqft. I do wish it it had the personal pace system as I loved it on my TimeMaster.

Appreciate the unfiltered review. I'll use your video as a reference for anyone that asks me about switching to electric as I do small engine work on the side. Thus, I'm obviously biased. The biggest piece of info missing from your review though is the cost of the freaking batteries. $250 - $350 for Toro's L324 60v 6ah to their L405 60v 7.5ah batteries!? Even if they last 4-5 years...none for me thanks.

Great review I have both of them and dont have the issue with the grass here in south Florida. For the EGO I dont like take of the bag but found that if you use the lever on the handle and fold it upright its mush easier to remove the bag on the EGO. I dont get mush suction out of the EGO vs the Toro and the self propelled on the EGO its terrible vs the more natural feel of the Toro. Thanks

I have several EGO products...the mower is excellent. Does a great job, very light, easy to use, plenty of power, quiet, good quality. Everything EGO makes seems to be a first rate quality. I would HIGHLY recommend the EGO line to any home owner.

I was going to go electric last year, but couldn't find the mower I wanted because of supply chain issues. (green works). I needed a mower, so I went with a Honda (gas) around 500 bucks. I couldn't be happier.

my yard isnt that great alot off weed but ego does the job . i have 4 ego products just got the new 28inch snowblower power+ cant wait to use it own 5 batteries FYI my lawn mower is 7 years old also i change the blade on my ego for a lifting blade to fix that issue

the adaptive self propelled is a game changer.. Like this is my 3rd electric mower.. I personally like how you don't have to worry about speed because it goes how fast you are walking. and Toro quality is nicer than my other electric mower.

Hmmm, block the Toro "hood scoop" off with some duct tape to force it to draw air from below the edge of the deck and up. My super recycler only struggles with clippings in thick zoysia that every mower I've ever run across it does. In my fescue it's gold. But I would suspect that you are spot on in identifying the 45 degree ramp of the chute.

My experience with my ego is that its just ok. Doesnt seem to be enough weight in the front and ifs almost like i have to push up on the handle to keep the front wheels planted for an even cut. I think theyre probably great on perfectly flat lawns. My yard is sloped a bit and theres some bumps here and there. I generally end up mowing twice because Im just not happy with the uneven cut. Battery life is fantastic however.

Your grass is ridiculously perfect. I would put arborvitaes around the fence line of your yard. I'm leaning towards the EGO, many good reviews including customer support.

Ego actually has a lower level mower with just a single mulching blade (I believe). I found it left a lot of clippings behind. Replaced the mulching blade with a high lift blade and 1000x better. Loving the Ego mower, coming up on our second summer with it. We also have the chainsaw, trimmer, leaf blower and 2-stage snow blower.

Last year I was able to buy that same toro electric mower for $150 on Facebook! It had no battery but I already had a 6ah battery. A seriously good find. I wonder if the shoot could be modified to not be so steep. I just run mine in mulch mode.

I have the Ego Select Cut XP. I usually use it with the mulching blades with the mulch plug in without the bag. It’s pretty powerful but suction is not great and doesn’t do well on wet grass.

I just used the EGO LM2156SP model for the first time today. It has three blades in the box. I chose the high lift bagging blade to use first since my grass was high in spots. It did a decent job, but I also felt like the suction was lacking as compared with the old Honda gas model. I looked over the lawn afterwards and the EGO did not pick up any small sticks. I'm talking tiny sticks, they just laid there in the grass. My old Honda gas sucked them up no problem. Overall however, I'll take the quietness and minimal service of battery over gas any day!

Someone mentioned this in another post, but I too have the Ego push mower (not the self propelled) and it came with one blade and the stock blade it came with was terrible. The suction wasn't good at all, it left some taller areas matted down , and it left clippings on the ground as well but when I purchased a high lift blade everything improved. Another thing I noticed with it is if you cut high with the stock blade and even the high lift blade it doesn't cut as well either so basically the best setting to cut the grass is at a 3 or below and anything above that not so great, again this is the single blade push mower of theirs. The other thing that I noticed with my Ego is that even if the grass is just a bit wet, you're not only going to get clumping in the chute but you're also going to get a build up on the deck where you need to stop and scrape it all off because it can impede the blade. I'm not even saying soaking wet from a rain but more like a morning dew that is just drying up can cause it. Other things I noticed, and it could just be the design of the machine but the front end of mine feels a bit long where you can't reach tighter areas because the nose is to far out from the deck and while it's not a heavy machine, for some reason the wheels tend to matt down the grass that it goes over so that too can play a role in the uneven finish. I have tall fescue and at the #2 or #3 setting it cuts well, but usually late August/early September I like to mow low before I dethatch and then overseed and it tends to struggle on the #1 setting and burn some of the battery run time because of it. What I normally do is if say I've been cutting on the #2 setting, I would then cut it at that setting, then move it down to a #1 afterwards to make it easier. If there is a knock on their blades it's that they seem too thin and I don't know if they improved them or not with the newer models. That being said, I like the Ego that I have...it came with the 5AH battery and a quick charger and that is more than enough for the 5,000 sq. ft lawn that I do have. I also have the Ego backpack leaf blower that I got for $200 at the Home Depot when they were getting rid of their Ego products and that came with a 7.5 AH battery so i use both. I had a Lawn Boy that lasted almost 30 years (my dad got it from a Landscaper that he knew) and when it finally died I got the Ego, it's tough to compare an electric with a gas powered motor because the gas powered one was better but I do like the battery powered mower and will stick with one even when I have to replace the one I do have.

Well, as someone leaning towards replacing my Honda HRX 217 with a battery powered mower, you've helped me eliminate the Toro. Still not sold on the EGO however, especially at that price.

I have an EGO select cut -- the 7.5ah model -- and my neighbor has a Toro electric, so we've already done this side by side. They cut about the same, but I do like the Toro's "personal pace" feature. For me, the EGO's self-propel speeds go straight from "I'm pushing it because it's too slow" to "It's taking me for a drag." Still, I think I win 'cause I got my mower for $162 on clearance. In all seriousness, that's quite a lush carpet you got there. Makes me want to redo my lawn from scratch this spring.

great video. Thanks for sharing. Regarding price for the EGO: 2023 price with out discount at ACE was $450 for my push model EGO w/ a 6 Ah battery. Self-propelled model adds about $125. Perhaps they have come down in price since this well made video.

I have a older Toro supercycler and a older lawn boy both are if not the best mowers ever made ill even mention Snapper they are awesome too!!

I’ve been cutting rye (backyard) and bermuda (front) with my ego for several years and I’m happy with the performance. Note, no long mower is perfect. My ego is maintenance free. My gas mower required more maintenance with fuel, oil and spark plug.

Your not the only reviewer who has not figured out that the the ego has the ability to easily move the handle totally out of the way to empty your clipping bag, thanks for the review.

I'd love to see a similar comparison but for mulching capabilities. I am an owner of an Ego mower with the same 2 blade cross cut setup and most of the time I use it in mulch mode. I've found that it bogs down in thicker grass and I really have to watch out to not let my grass get too long if I want to mulch otherwise I have to cut it much higher than I really want to.

I have two Toro's, one Recycler and one Super Recycler. Both have been problem free and good battery run time. Everyone i know who has the Ego mowers love them the first year, likes them the 2nd, start having problems the 3rd year. Hates them the 4th because of battery and wiring shorts and broken plastic parts.

I have a gas powered Toro which is only a few years old and it leaves tons of clippings also so i dont think its a issue of the battery power. Has to be in the design of the deck and blade and shoot.

Great stuff! I am considering a battery mower because the simplicity. Pop in the battery, go, run it at the evening with lights, quiet, no need to store gasoline and change oil, and at the end I am not smelling like exhaust. I have an older gas powered Toro (2-3 yrs old), the design is the same with the same results. I wished I kept my John Deere self propelled push mower, it cut the grass finer and pushed more into the bag before I had to empty it, she was an old girl and needed a lot of love from the years of use and I thought it was time to replace her. The new John Deere push mowers were much more than I was looking to spend and went with the Toro.

Few points. Front door entrance ✔, Mowing higher ✔, nice review ✔now just waiting for someone to come up with a handled robo mower 🤔😂😂

I just bought an Ego mower, probably the same or similar model as yours. I haven't tried to bag with it, because I don't bag, I either side discharge (EGO sucks at this, should have a regular side discharge setup on it rather than the out from behind crap), I also mulch....right now the grass is thick and tall due to the rains we've been getting, but in a few weeks when it warms up it'll be all mulching for me. The auto torque sensing doesn't really work very well, I wish they'd just give a 2 or 3 setting control, low, medium, high or whatever and you set it to the power level you need. The Ego is expensive, but from what I've been hearing is the battery platform is one of the best if not the best platforms on the market as far as quality. My Ego came with a 7.5AH battery, after 40 minutes of mowing I still had 1 bar out of the 5 left, so probably another 10-15 minutes of cutting. I was able to mow my front and back yard, but didn't tackle behind my shop, or the pasture area at all as the mower wouldn't handle the pasture at all LOL, that grass is really thick and tall.

"Hood scoop like a 1985 Honda Civic". My first Honda 26+yrs ago was a 1985 Civic CRX Si. No hood scoop, but the hood and fenders on that very rare CRX Si were fiberglass. That was the first year Honda sold an Si model in the States. The regular Civics from that year had a steel hood and fenders. Another fun Honda fact, back in the late 1980's one of the car magazines had an Electric converted Honda CRX on the cover of the magazine doing a HUGE burnout with so much smoke from the tires the car could barely be seen through the smoke. That was with old school lead acid batteries. No shortage of torque with electric motors, but I still burn gas and kick ass

I know Toro says that blade is good for bagging and mulch, but I believe there is a high lift blade to bag better. I’m a Toro fanboy though. Lol The place I work I seen too many Ego’s come back for me to be interested.

I have both the ego and the toro 60v 22inch recycler. It's not even close the toro cuts and feels much better.

I have the same toro but petrol and it mulches and catch’s very good maybe your problem with it not mulching and catching is because it is not as powerful as the petrol or maybe it is the grass types I live Australia and you live overseas and grass types is different to what I have. toro is a good brand in my opinion and it has not let me down yet

I had the Toro and replaced it with the Ego. I would not consider going back to gas. The Ego cuts extremely well. It’s quiet so hearing protection is not necessary. I now mow whenever I want without bothering my neighbors. Another plus is no gasoline to store and fool around with. The Ego is completely self propelled. I always called my Toro the Personal Push. What a stupid idea that was. Storage is very simple and I don’t have to worry about fluids leaking all over the place. Each Fall I would have my Toro serviced which cost about $120. So in a few years that pays for my Ego. I do want to say I have a small lawn so battery life has never been a problem for me. I’m able to mow my lawn about 5 times on one charge. My lawn is Kentucky Bluegrass and I mow at 3 inches. I do not bag my grass. Another plus is I have a Ego blower and the batteries are interchangeable which is really nice. As I mentioned earlier I would not go back to gas powered. Cheers!

Facts about the toro bagging system. I rage quit my bag one day and threw it in the trash cuz it was basically useless

Please review the new Toro Stripe. It's based on the Recycler chassis with a composite deck, longer runtime, built in roller bar (for stripes).

The high lift blade makes a difference. Uses battery faster but does a better job.

HIgh-lift blades cause more noise and drag on the battery. It was probably designed and tested to function properly, then some bean-counters came in and made them use a quieter, gentler blade because it costs less and the mow time would be longer. Or something like that.

I'd have liked to see a comparison of the Ego in movement vrs the Toro Personal Pace. I love my old (gas) Toro Personal Pace as I don't have to fight with the mower if I need to backup, go up a slope, etc.

Is that the Barenbrug rye grass on your front lawn that you planted a while back? It looks amazing right now.

So we have the Toro 60v snowblower and are looking to get a battery mower since we already have the battery which is a lot of the investment cost. We have the Ryobi riding ower but need a walk behind for getting under our trees and tight areas. Have you gotten your hands on the Super Recycler to see if the design it better?

Thanks for the review. As a safety feature, to access the discharge bag for the EGO, tilt the handle forward (auto disengage the motor with internal switch build into the handle bar) by depressing the handle height adjustment lever and taking the bag out is super easy without any obstacles. Best cutting result on EGO Select Cut mowers regardless of bagging, mulching or discharging is using the high lift blade so it will increases the motor rpm due to the extra weight of the high lift blade and will have enough suctions to cut through higher grass with next to none clippings.

My latest EGO mower was $429.00. Not sure where your prices are from. I went all in 3 years ago with the EGO edger, trimmer, hedge trimmer, chainsaw, snow blower, camp light, and blower. I will never go back to gas. Nice thing with EGO is once I had a few batteries I just bought "tool only" and saved a bunch of money. Never had a failure, never had to call warranty claims, and battery life is long enough to do 3 residential homes. No more filling a gas can, pull starts, changing plugs, flushing and winterizing fuel systems, air filters or carb rebuilds. The ONLY issue I have is the mower is so much lighter than a fuel - steel deck mower that doesn't have the weight to keep it planted firmly to the ground so any larger imperfections you have they wheel roll over and not through.

What I love about electric mowers are how quiet they are! My neighbors don't disturb me at all while they take forever mowing their lawns. Then I fire up my Honda HRC2163HXA with one pull at first light, wake em all up and get it done in minutes, wet or dry, bag it and tag it, no BS. Hard to believe Honda is axing their mowers. If I had to cut green I'd go old-school and use a sharp and well-adjusted push reel mower. Great review of two base electric mowers BTW!

Nice review. I have been looking at the Toro 60V Super Recycler. The design for the clippings to the bag is different, and it looks to be better. Worried about the Ego's plastic deck and thin blades, compared to the heavy duty design on the Toro. The SR also comes with what is called a performance blade (extra, in the box), which is supposed to have more lift than the installed blade.

In case it helps anyone, I have had bad experience with the Stihl RMA 510 V. Plastic gears are the weak link in the chain, and once they break after a couple years, you have an expensive piece of junk on your hands instead of a mower. I am very happy with Stihl battery weed whackers, though.

Egos next upgrade needs to be a throttle control for the blade. Like they have on the zero turn. I need max power when cutting my thick blue grass sod. Then the cut would be superior.

Do you like the metal deck better and the feel over the plastic? The Ego looks so light.

Ego has a new model out LM2167SP which has speed IQ, a turbo button, comes with a 12ah battery and generates 8.3 ft lbs. of torque. I think this will outperform most gas mowers.

The Toro has a mulching blade on it, instead of a draft blade. The combs in the blades are specifically designed, to drop clippings back onto the lawn, rather than blow upward into the volute, and into the chute. If you need more suction out of the EGO, you need to put the wide draft blade on it, rather than the run time extender blade. Doing that will greatly increase 'suction', but, at the expense of battery power. (reduced run time)

Ego is best with the highlift blades!.

Did you put the bagging blade on the EGO? That actually makes a big difference on the cut.

The front baffle under the deck on the Recycler has a "bumped-out" section that does not exist on the Super Recycler and other mowers. What is the purpose of that shape? I notice when I pull my recycler backwards that it always leaves a pile of clippings on the lawn. I also notice that the front baffle on Recycler does not extend down as far as the rest of the deck does. Is there grass shooting under the baffle in front or getting caught in the the baffle "notch" on my Recycler that is causing the dropped clippings when pulling backwards?

I think the issue with any of these battery mowers and bagging, is they don’t run the RPM as high like a gas mower would be running to get that battery life. I tried an Ego years ago on my Bermuda and it was horrible at it. Went back to my Honda till I got into reel mowing. Miss seeing your stuff man!

Lol I will use my hand scissors before I ever buy a battery lawnmower! Battery chainsaw for my work👍 Battery weed whacker👍battery blower for my home 👍 battery hedge trimmer 👍 and most other battery operated tools that have been out there but these lawnmowers no way!!! I know they are pushing all this stuff but get rid of all my grass before I buy a battery lawnmower and that’s on roughly 3/4 total grass area I’ll spend $10 a gallon gladly If my development or state or town outlaws gas stuff I’ll either move or go all veg garden and mulch Appreciate your video though

This was at the height of its popularity. That same Ego is only $450 now. Factor in the gas savings its cheaper than the gas. I'll still keep my no hassle gas mower thhough

I paid $300 for my EGO which is the base model.

The only reason I'm looking to go electric is not because I want to be eco friendly, it's because of the noise and I don't like to have to change oil and fill with gas, my gas mower. Plus I have a very small lawn. I'd rather just slap in a battery, mow and be done with it.
