This is a quick video detailing how I've installed my navigation lights in my 97 Stratos 295 Pro Elite. The tubing is found in most hardware stores and usually costs less than .50 cents/foot. The heat shrink tubing can be found in hardware stores as well, but it's usually less expensive at automotive parts outlets. I used the white pcb light strip in my application but the black pcb strip would be less noticeable.
I am SURE you will learn something about LED lighting from this video by clicking here: • Quality LED light syst...
To see the entire system lit up at night on the water, click here: • Bass boat LED light sy...

Great video. I want to put running lights and a gps system on my jet ski, as I use it more as a boat than a go fast toy.

That's a really great idea in my opinion... It's the perfect way to light up a recreational watercraft too, since they draw so little current.

One question. How do you secure them inside your rub rail? Velcro, silicone, glue, etc. I like the way this looks though. Thanks for your time. Definitely going to watch more of your videos.

This here is flat out against the USCG rules. I love it though, very nice work. I'm sure they wont really mess with you in small lakes and rivers without any ports. these could just confuse ships. i know if i was in the wheelhouse and seen this I'd sound the horns

Well, as you can see in some of my other videos, my boat is lit up to the point that it has earned the nickname "The Mothership". I haven't taken any flack from anyone on it yet, but I also do almost all of my night/early morning fishing (when I use the lights) on a lake that is rarely if ever visited by the men in blue.

Does that look like an off shore boat? 100% legal for inland lakes at least anywhere in Minnesota.

If you can't see these lights at night or get confused on the correct way to go past this boat. Then you my friend should not be on the water at all!!!!!!!!

Thanks Mike... It's been almost a year now since I've done this mod, and it's been in some very wet and nasty weather. And it still looks as good as the day I first did it. If you have any questions along the way at all, feel free to shoot me an email.

What about bass boats that come with these lights stock in rub rail? These are more visible at night also dumb boats should slow down at night when driving..great install video doing mine in a few weeks

Thanks so much for this vid! Great job. My question is can the led strip be cut and still functional? The only ones I can find online are 12” long. Thanks.

Great job good looking setup... so looking at other comments, why would this be illegal? They are brighter and more visible than the standard red/green navigation pole lights.

There is apparently a big "gray" area in the word of the law, or at least the way it is interpreted. If you read the Marine Board regulations, it states the lights visible at 112.5 degrees, and some see that as a minimum, some as a maximum. It doesn't make any sense to me how something more visible could be less safe, but then again... I'm not a lawyer. On the lakes I fish on primarily, it's nothing I never have to worry about. If I'm on the Columbia, I'm not fishing in the dark, so it's not an issue.

The 112.5 is not a minimum range, it is a MAXIMUM range. If I were you I would add a disclaimer stating that anyone modifying their boat lighting does so at their own risk. Because “NO” these lights are not Legal. My fishing partner found out the hard way. Now understand your local wildlife officer may or may not care that you are out of compliance with Coast Guard lighting requirements. But as my buddy found out after an accident the courts DO care. My buddy had installed the exact same setup that you have on your boat. Long story short: my buddy while night bass fishing was involved in a boating accident in which he was struck by another boater. From all perspectives at the time it was easy to see that my buddy had no fault in the accident. In fact the other boater was ticketed as being the at fault boater. But as things played out he came to realize during the process of litigation in maritime accidents, THINGS CHANGE when rule violations come into play. And the lighting that my buddy had installed onto his bass boat was found in court to be a direct violation of U.S. Coast Guard lighting requirements for many reasons. And as a result of his lighting install he was found to be 70% liable for the accident even though he wasn’t the at fault driver. You see in maritime law (USCG lighting requirements) if you deviate from the rules you have to prove without a doubt that your deviation did not contribute in ANY WAY to the accident. The courts found that his EBay lighting violated the requirements in a few ways. 1. The lighting did not have a USCG approval, which all boat lighting manufacturers must submit for and receive. 2. His lighting failed to meet the requirements of ABYC A-16, which states: Sidelights - The starboard side light showing green, and the port side light showing red, from dead ahead to 22 5° abaft the beam (90* + 22,5' = 1 12 5°) on their respective sides. You see the 112.5 is a MAXIMUM allowable range not minimum, and his lights exceeded that by what was determined to be 30 degrees to much. 3. The light manufacturer had never submitted the lighting for laboratory testing for USCG lighting compliance testing, another requirement for USCG Approval. The court determined that that my buddy had hazardously installed unapproved red and green LED strip lighting on the bow, which hampered the other boater’s efforts to avoid collision.

Wow... this is some great information. I have talked to several people about this, and to my surprise, even people associated with a state marine board (I won't say which state, and it may or may not be my own state of residence) said "Yes, those are perfectly fine" yet at the same time, I get the impression that their own understanding of the regulations are somewhat vague. I do most of my fishing on a lake where few are on the water at night, for fear of being taken away by aliens or mosquitoes. Most of the time I have my lights on is in the early morning hours when I get out shortly before the sun comes up. During these times, there is rarely any other boat traffic to worry about. This summer I will be on the Columbia River quite often, and I will likely change my nav lights back to the original format for a variety of reasons. But this is some great info and I appreciate the effort you've put into writing all of this for everyone to read and learn from. What State did your partner's accident occur in?
@morrisjoe2003
@morrisjoe2003 7 лет назад
his accident was on KY Lake. His boat was an 2011 Triton 21' the other person was in an old 1994 Astro. The Astro's damage was limited to the bow and forward Keel. The Triton was a total loss as the side and cockpit were demolished. No one was seriously injured though. One thing the other lawyer did to prove his case was to bring in the Triton and attach the bow pole bow light. the pole light is USCG approved and designed to show light at the correct angles. with it and the led's turned on he demonstrated that the led's Arc of visibility far exceeded the approved lighting. there fore confusing his client as the actual direction of travel of my buddy's boat. Which to me is horse crap, but it was a good move. In the end, my buddys boat was valued as a 32,000 loss while the Astro was 2100. because of the lighting my buddys part of the damages was over 23,000.

I'm loving this. Well put together her video. I've e watched a ton on youtube, this is by far the best. I have a question.. I bought a 8' sun dolphin. I don't have a rub rail. Got a suggestion on where up front for red/green would be best and HOW?
@rodfather_bass_fishing
@rodfather_bass_fishing 6 лет назад
Hi Jaime... probably the easiest way to do something like this on a Sun Dolphin is to just stick the lights to the hull below the outer-most part of the gunwale. I think this would be easiest because of the fact that a.) the lights are stinking dirt cheap and b.) this would make them the most compact and least likely to get hung up on anything. If you mount them the same way I did the deck lighting seen on some of my other videos, I think they'll withstand most punishment that anything else would. Finding a way to run the wiring would be the biggest challenge, and without looking at one I don't know that I could give the best advice!?

Bassin NW503 if you google , sun dolphin sportsman images, would help. I'm going to have to have some kinda dash or small control panel with some rocker or toggle switches for nav and floor lights, so that hole wont be a issue. Trying to figure out how to get them connected and ran to the panel will. The boat is only 2 pieces. Sandwiched between a folded lip style rub rail, with no real way inside :( Maybe by summers end I can post a pic or let you know HOW... I got it all put together. Thanks for turning my hamster wheel

All the data you gave about regulations are correct but still I don't see how manage to stay at 112.5 degrees with a led strip.

On my boat, the illumination extends well beyond the minimum range without a problem. I can't say for certain it will on all boats.

It took me 10 mins to install my led lights I just put them right under my rub rail. That was just to much work. No need to put them in rub rail if u dock an hit that rail your lights are done for.
@jimharvey2458
@jimharvey2458 7 лет назад
where did you find the clear tubing?
@rodfather_bass_fishing
@rodfather_bass_fishing 7 лет назад
The tubing can be found at most hardware stores, and I have found that there is little difference in quality form one manufacturer to another. However, there are some options for wall thickness, so if you think about it, take a small section of LED light strip with you so you can find a tubing that has the right inside and outside diameter for your application.

I get all my lights on eBay. There's so many vendors online, I recommend to people to just go on eBay, and find your nearest vendor that offers free shipping (And is cheap) and has a good seller rating. Key things to remember: make sure they are waterproof, make sure they are 60 lights/meter, (as opposed to 30 lights/meter) and make sure they are 12volt supply voltage. (Some are 110V) Feel free to leave another comment if you have any other questions.

Please do not encourage people to install these lights, they are dangerous and illegal. Lights are used to let other boaters know what direction you are going so they can avoid hitting you. Boaters that know about lights will be confused and this could lead to an accident.
@rodfather_bass_fishing
@rodfather_bass_fishing 7 лет назад
I'm not encouraging anyone to modify their watercraft. There are plenty of popular companies that are already doing that. I'm simply showing people how I've done MY boat without spending the extra money... when I'm on a major waterway with other boat traffic at night, I use the post that the boat was originally equipped with.
