@Katherine Grace One of the things I love reading Tolkien is imagining him making up the story to The Hobbit to his kids. Or I'm going back through The Iliad atm, and imagining the dozens of generations of the oldest man in the community telling the tales of glory and heroism of people long, long past, to the newest generation (until someone re-invents writing in Homer's time. The Greek Dark Ages were a legit thing, after the Bronze Age Collapse they *literally forgot how to write* and would instead tell stories of the amazing architecture about them, that they must have been built by giant "cyclopes", ie. "cyclopean architecture", using stones so immense they couldn't even conceive how to move them... anymore... because they somehow forgot what they once knew how to do.)

I'm going to be very honest. My eyes tear up when I watch this. It feels as if I have finally broken free from the dysfunctional chains of my childhood. It only took my childhood and entire adolescence, and however much excruciating pain it brings me I wish I could have realised this 10 years ago, and been able to start steering in the right direction back then. I finally can now, and it makes me so happy. I will do whatever it takes to make sure my parents and grandparents dysfunctions never get perpetuated to my future children.

I had what people would call "old school parenting". I ended up spending so much of my life doing things to get back at my parents for my childhood. Now, no matter how mad I get with my son in law, I take a second and choose the path that will get the best results. He is flourishing in an environment that values communication over physical abuse. Can't change the past, but I can change the future. And it's so satisfying. He's a straight A student and it just took parenting I wish I had.

This is absolutely, hands down, one of the best lessons I’ve ever seen in my entire life. This should be shown repeatedly in every school, at every level; elementary, junior high, and high school. In fact, both of my sons aged 25 & 28 will be getting a copy of this, as well as a few older adults I know. If these lessons were ingrained in us early, can you imagine the utopia we would all live within. Magnificent. Absolutely Magnificent! 😊👌🏼💗

@@bruceelniski Its not about perfection, and its certainly not about achieving utopia. Humans will never be rid of suffering for the reasons laid out above. You've had some life experiences, went ahead and put some heavy thought into it, then you put these thoughts out onto the internet for people to hear. No matter how many people tell me not to pursue it, how it is not worthwhile, I always come back to these videos and find complete enjoyment and intrigue. I am planning on a career in psychology, and to always continue learning about it no matter how old I get. Not only do I get a rush of serotonin from learning about psychology but also from telling others about what I learned. My dream from a junior in high school, was to teach psychology, and I have finally came to the mindset that I do not care what others may say or think, this is my path, I am not running anymore. Thank you Jordan B. Peterson for the impact you have had on my life, and so many others. Also, thank God he showed me your videos that led me to an adoration of your knowledge and perspectives. Thank you, Jordan Peterson! You might have saved my life. I lost weight, I am trying to get my house in order, and I am actually starting to put hard work into what I do instead of living the delusion of pretending to do that. It is probably going to be a long, hard way for me to achieve what I am planning to achieve, but the alternative is to just waste my life and live miserably. You are a realist, and I think the entire controversy around you just exists because you show people what they are afraid of most. The reality they live in. It really helped me a lot. There is no shame in admitting you are doing wrong or have been doing wrong for a long time, as long as you are working to improve that. No one is perfect. No one is ever going to be perfect. But I will be damned if we are not allowed to aim for it, not in others but in ourselves.

Yeah.. Here’s a couple quotes from Joseph Campbell I like on the subject: “If you live with the myths in your mind, you will find yourself always in mythological situations. They cover everything that can happen to you. And that enables you to interpret the myth in relation to life, as well as life in relation to myth.” And more importantly, “It has been well said that mythology is the penultimate truth -- penultimate because the ultimate cannot be put into words.” The truth in “myths”, as it were, definitely captures the mind and causes you to orient yourself in a way no amount of reasoning will. Maybe, as JBP has said, truth is that which serves life, after all. Personally, I’m agnostic but getting quite interested in religion.

@Darren some people have a hard time fully accepting God's Word. Jordan Peterson is that type of person, and it's obvious if you watch his videos over time and he is coming more and more to accept God. Also, God knows that there is good that a believer can learn from a gentile. Remember the tale of the Good Samaritan? That was God showing his believers how to behave using the example of a non-believer. You assume that learning a psychological interpretation of God's word will drive people away from god, and in the process attempt to drive people away from someone who can guide believers who lack guidance to a better and more Godly life.

@Darren well, what about someone who doesn't believe Jesus as God? And we all learn from teachers in institutions and writers. We don't exactly know their beliefs. So we avoid them too?

I like Jordan Peterson and he is very smart. But like everyone, he isn't perfect. He is a great speaker but I do think he likes to generalize/simplify certain points that shouldn't generalized.

Seems like a pretty broad generalization. Even granting that I'd agree many of the ideas in this video would be good to chew on at any age, I don't think it's appropriate to just throw all of education under the bus.
@BabudroSun

@@blueskies1237 that's not much of an explanation. They don't literally tell kids in school to never grow up, so what are you saying? If the end result is lots of adults who never grew up, then sure it's valid to question what happened to get them there, but why automatically assume it's the fault of the teaching at school?

I have been listening to most anything that I can find on your teachings the past 2 years and I feel like it has really given me a good base to stand on. I was going on the path to be a useless bum but now I am in classes for IT and I have become more social and have even taken a hobby of sword fighting. I was wasting a lot of my time caring about what people who didn't matter to me on social media thought of me but I have given that up. I instead have tried to make my relationships in person more meaningful for both my sake and the other person's. I have a lot to improve but I feel astronomicaly better than when I did before finding your lectures so thank you.

Because of Dr. Peterson, I'm going to pick my damn sacrifice. I'm going to take actions. There are things that I want to achieve in life but I was too self conscious or afraid in general. I've come to realize that my inaction is me sacrificing my dreams for temporary comfort. And that's a stupid sacrifice... I have been dealing with self conciseness most of my life. The only time I wasn’t self conscious was probably when I was kid - when I wasn’t smart enough to care about what other people thought. I have been working on it and one thing I’m going to do is to document this journey and force myself to do things that I truly want to achieve, despite it could be uncomfortable during the process. Hoping I’ll be able to learn something from it!

At some point we all must learn that our value comes from God, not other people. We can spend our life trying to please others, be accepted,… and then one thing can disappoint them and it’s our own fault because we so look for approval from others. Why? I am learning that God, my Father, loves me and I am of great value to Him. So when I get that look from my husband, son, whoever….instead of receiving their disappointment and devaluing myself, I put on the brakes, rethink it, and let it go. We are our own worst enemy, often convincing ourself of things that are not true. They may be disappointed but so what. They are over it or it’s no big deal to them, meanwhile I’ve spent my day badgering myself over it. Not anymore. God has helped me redirect my thoughts. He uses people like Jordan Peterson!
