MWO (Mechwarrior Online) by Piranha Games. Free to play at mwomercs.com.
MechWarrior Online is a free-to-play vehicular combat video game, officially launched during September 2013 by Piranha Games for Microsoft Windows. The game takes place within the larger BattleTech universe.
In MechWarrior: Online, players takes the role of a "MechWarrior" who pilots large bipedal combat vehicles known as BattleMechs (Mech for short). Players can customize their BattleMech with an array of weapons and equipment, and engage in 12 versus 12 battles, the outcome of which earns the players experience and c-bills for future BattleMech purchases and customization. There are currently seven game modes that involve protecting and attacking a single base (Assault), capturing and holding several points (Conquest), take and hold the center of the map (Domination), leading a VIP to a pickup point (Escort), attacking a space defense system (Siege/Counter-Attack), protecting and attacking field bases with turrets and walls spread across the map (Incursion), and team death-match (Skirmish).

What kind of recommendation is that!? Why would you recommend an Assault mech like the Urbie to pilots who want to play Lights? :P
@ToXikyogHurt
@ToXikyogHurt 5 лет назад
I know you're kidding, but the Urbie really does play more like a medium than a light. It's not fast enough to operate independantly from the team and do real "light 'mech shiz". The Cougar is the same: they fill the second-line fire support/damage amplification role of a medium. Compare with the Cicada which normally operates like a light 'mech - rushing off to attack from an unexpected angle or charging an isolated LRM boat.

Awesome video. I'm dumping my Jenner and trying an Urbie. Do more like this please. However, please go beyond a laser build; they can get boring after a bit. Thank you TTB!
@irushiro2119
@irushiro2119 5 лет назад
if u wanna be brawly with the Urbie, take the Missile one. the SRMS are fitting better couse tonnage limit. mech.nav-alpha.com/#89c4efd9_UM-R68 couse you mentioned Jenner, and Jenner has missiles as well, i tought this could be to your liking or try one with RACs, they are funny and taking RAC hits is annoying.

As a huge fan, and collector, of the Urbanmech, owning all seven variants, I have to agree wholeheartedly with your Recommendation of the Urbie as a great Light. Possibly the best assault in the game!

Light mechs I really enjoy are the Raven, focusing on ER-Large lasers using ECM, and the Cougar with the double shoulder mounted heavy large lasers and ECM. But they are not very flexible, are very dependent on good teams, the ravens needs to stay far back, and the Cougar needs bigger friendly players nearby to soak up some damage

I definitely agree on the Wolfhound - very good Speed/Armor/Damage Combo, yet not on the Urbie - Urbie is way too slow for a regular Light Mech. ATM I would rather suggest a Commando as a Beginner Light. Beginners need to survive as long as possible to have some Learning Effect and no other Mech is as survivable as the Commando, ECM Variant or not :)
@JoshuaCairns
@JoshuaCairns 5 лет назад
The Commando is tanky, but it's tanky because of its legs and that's what higher skill players aim for on lights, but it still requires high-speed leg shielding to be effective. It's fast and agile, but the majority of its weapons lay in its weak arms, except for the hero variant. The 1D variant is probably the safest for newer players, but it's reliant on ammo - and I'd always recommend a new player start with a laser oriented mech. All-in-all I would say the Commando is a skill-oriented light and not the best choice for new players. The Arctic Cheetah is a much safer pick than the Commando, where it's completely configurable for however you'd like to play, while still being tanky because of hitboxes.

Great video! I would like to see more of these. I think it would be great to see you carry this format across from beginner mechs to a video series overviewing the variants of one mech per video along with a gameplay of a couple of useful builds from the better variants. Just a suggestion but do what you do and I will keep watching!

Wolfhound is a good recommendation. Even with a standard engine, they'll hang around 100kph, more so with speed tweaks. Set up a mostly torso laser array, max armor, and get learning. One-button weapons, enough speed to get out of (or into) trouble, pinpoint damage for around a 30dmg alpha. Weirdly tank-y, practically a medium mech. It'll teach you a TON about proper gameplay. Cautious support, strategic flanking, and you'll be very successful. A kill or two, 400dmg rounds. And it will punish you for your errors, which is also a good experience.

would have liked it more when u could recommendet a clan light as well. honestly i dont know if i were a beginenr again, if i would use stealth technics, hit and run, sniper or something else. guessing beginenrs tend to be less responsive while taking damage, not knowign where it might come from, not watching the own mech health. and not knowing where the team walks. staying with hte team is good, and the urbanmech or one of the slower clan lights are perfect for this. supporting from second line, having the ability to see teammembers around you. faster lights tend to have less survival when you make mistakes, and you do make mistakes.

I got a Grinner over the holidays with MC from the loot bag events while all the hero mechs were on sale. I run mine with 5 ml, 4 dhs, ecm(naturally) and a light 250, ot is fast enough and nigh impossible to kill if you know how to twist. Plus the heat management is crazy.

I honestly think you're wrong about the best newbie mechs. The Urbie and Wolfhound are mechs that can give skilled players a lot of value, but they have huge drawbacks that make them unsuited for new players. 1. The urban mech is the best newbie mechs of these, but it's honestly too slow (meaning it's easy to get into shit that you can't get out of) and it's too easy to strip its weapons for it to be a great newbie mech. 2. The Wolfhound is too tall. Most mechs have a great defense in that their profile is really tiny. No such luck for the Wolfhound. Its armor is pretty much all there to compensate for being a tallboy, so in practice it's not as tough as many of the other mechs around. IMHO the best newbie mech is the Commando 1D on the IS side. It's so tiny, it's so heavily armored and tough and it can mount two SRM launchers in the CT you will be able to shoot until you run out of ammo. It's also very hard to overheat in this mech. You basicly have to great builds, one is an XL225 build with SRM4s and 2ERSLs for maximum speed and extra ammo. Another is a LE200 build with 2xSRM4 launchers&2ML lasers for a big more alpha and the ability to lose a sidetorso. It's not great at dueling enemy light mechs, but if you're a newbie you'll lose 1 on 1 light duels anyway so... If you want to have fun as a newbie the Commando 1D will give you a lot. Clan side the arctic cheetah prime with 4 ERSL and 2 SRM4 launchers is a great mech. ECM, Jump jets, speed. The arctic cheetah has everything you need to deal massive damage, harass and annoy your enemy and then escape and avoid. It's not as tiny as the Commando, but it has ECM to compensate. Both of these mechs can deal a lot of damage and they're extremely flexible.

I have been playing for about 6 months and my first mech was the Locust 1E which just got me into trouble, a lot. Deciding to slow down the pace a little I went for the COM-2D and never looked back, it can take a bit of a kicking, will teach you how to harass and how to preserve yourself for the end game and it is actually great fun. The Arctic Cheetah Prime I didn't like too much at the start, again because if you are inexperienced you can get yourself into serious trouble but once you warm to it and get some skill points in it, it becomes a vicious little murderer. The urbie is tough but it isn't going to teach you much, if anything, about how to play a light well.

Legit question from a noob: Why would you recommend just slow tanky lights instead of (relatively fast) mediums? Would you recommend a new player to just not bother with lights in general? (have not watched your medium mech vid yet but plan to load it up in a bit)
@TTBprime
@TTBprime 5 лет назад
Because this is a video specifically about light mechs. Players generall like a certain weight class over others.
@ainumahtar
@ainumahtar 5 лет назад
@@TTBprime Yeah I get that, and personally I preferred lights in games prior to MWO, but watching your light video makes me wonder the same thing I arrived at on my own: why would I play a light if the "best" lights are basically mediums, and then why play mediums if the "best" mediums are basically heavies? If I can run 80kph in a heavy mech that carries 5x the firepower and 20x the armor as the beefiest light (which barely runs faster), why use a light? Especially as it seems support stuff like scouting and capping basically is not rewarded at all. Not trying to bitch btw I really would like to know, because as someone who loved lights in earlier games like MW2 and 3 (where you got score bonuses for doing dmg in lights compared to heavier frames, which appears to not be a thing in MWO), it seems kind of sad to me that the best way to be a light is basically be as heavy as possible. Aside from aesthetic mech design, what is the advantage to lights? more edit: thx for the initial answer btw ^^ I'd live it if you could address the above as well

@@ainumahtar because tonnage. You're thinking of quickplay but in comp, you need to respect a certain tonnage limit.
@ainumahtar
@ainumahtar 3 года назад
@@ForkTheSpoonWrecker No, I didn't. I did not even know there was a competitive mode in MWO, I am just disappointed that MWO does not really reward anything but damage and kills, without any sort of scaling to amount for using a lighter mech for the purposes of scouting for the team.

not really. There are events where you can earn currency to buy hero mechs, mech bays beyond the first 4. Then there are ways to earn cockpit items, colors. About the only thing you can not earn for free are the camo or design patterns. I am not sure as to the bolt on additions.
