What picture profile is your favorite for the Mavic 2 Pro? What do you use the most? I use DLog-M the most!

@@johnsfilmsllc HI! and do we need to overexpose when shooting at d log, like when shooting on sony cameras in s log?
@johnsfilmsllc
@johnsfilmsllc 3 года назад
@@efimborisov8545 Efim, I ETTR (expose to the right) with my sony when shooting slog and Cine 3 quite a bit. The Dlog I ETTR as well, however I prefer to think of it as “expose for the highlights” because that tells you when you can stop. If you expose for highlights and get them in a nice spot you typically have the bottom end covered and the correction is easier. To note, I use the Leeming LUTS on both the DLog and slog….(did on my bmpcc4k and gh5 too). You can’t beat the accuracy of those when you get white balance and exposure correct in camera (or in the two nodes prior to the LUT node in resolve heheheh:))

@keith-knittel
@keith-knittel 4 года назад
Hey there George, the difference between H.264 and H.265 normal is pretty minimal until you begin to color grade the footage. The H.265 will hold up pretty well compared to the H.264 footage because there isn't as much data in the H.264 footage. Thats not to say you can't use it, but if you're color grading - stick to the H.265 profiles. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Nerdy videos are GREAT! Other types of videos are just too general, and there are far too many of those! Please do more! Last week, I used H.265/DLOG-M for the first time without even knowing what I was going to get; When I saw in DaVinci Resolve that everything was blown out, I was scared until I started to color grade and saw just how amazing the video became. Good compare...I was going to do this with the DJI FPV because older systems choke on the H265 files so I set my FPV to H264 to deliver to certain folks. I mean the FPV camera is not as clean as the Mavic 2 Pro or Air 2 s but for those special swooping action type of shots, it works great.

A couple of comments, questions if I may. I noticed you used -4 to fix the lens distortion. When I shoot D-log I need -11 up to -14. On other RU-vid channels I've heard people using -10. Shouldn't the lens distortion be the same for the same lens? Or are there other varied factors that cause the distortion? To me, the lens distortion is a big issue and leads me to shoot "normal." Why isn't there lens distortion when using h264? I know that's a lot of questions but perhaps you could help. Thanks.
@keith-knittel
@keith-knittel 3 года назад
Those are great questions that are way above my pay grade to answer! But I know when shooting raw with my a7siii, there are no lens corrections baked into the footage when comparing it to the internally recorded footage - so I have to apply some slight lens distortion in post to fix it. I assume the drone is recording whatever the sensor is reading out without any color or lens correction applied. Some shots will require more lens correction than others though overall. If you take a wide angle lens and shoot a building looking straight up, you’ll need some serious lens correction to make the lines of the building appear straight - but if you’re shooting the building from the air, in the center of the building you’ll likely need much less lens correction. For the straight on shots on the video I didn’t need much lens correction, but if you fly close to objects, or fly at an angle you’ll need much more. Sorry for that long-winded answer! Hopefully it was helpful - thanks for watching and posting great questions

Hey there Allen, I’ve done some film photography in the past and you are 100% right - nailing it in camera is the best method there. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with nailing it in camera but I enjoy the aspect of video editing and color grading a lot. I like shooting some clips and capturing their natural colors, but sometimes I love making creative color grades on clips and log profiles allow me to do that easier than the true or vivid colors. Again, not one way is right or wrong, just depends on the clip and what your shoot calls for! There are plenty of times where clients want true and natural colors that I try my best to nail in camera and not edit heavily. Great point and thanks for watching!

Your title and your commentary uses the term "Picture" or "Image' profile, but what you are really discussing is a video profile, not a still image. I have an a 1st edition Mavic Pro that gave you the ability to choose d-cinelike for video and for still images using the h.264 compression. With my Mavic 2 Pro, I cannot find the settings to take still images in DLOG-M. Does that option not exist on M2P drones series?
@keith-knittel
@keith-knittel 4 года назад
Hey there, sorry about the confusion. Some cameras call them “picture profiles” - I understand that probably isn’t the best way to phrase that. The photo equivalent of a video profile, is shooting raw. That won’t compress your photo like a jpg will and you can edit all of the data that way. I don’t think the mavic 2 pro shoots photos in the picture profiles? Or if you can shoot photos in the different profiles? To be honest, I’ve never tried to shoot a dlog photo. Ill have to try it and report back to you, thanks for the great question and watching

H265 definitely requires more computer horsepower, if you’re struggling to edit smoothly you can convert the footage to h264 and edit it from there. If you’re using a program that supports proxy files, that’s another option as well. You can still shoot in h265 but you’ll have another step when it comes time to edit. But if you want an easier process overall, shooting in h264 will be easiest. Good points and thanks for sharing

about lens distortions... what does lens distortions has to do with a dlog/hlg? it are two separate things. I dont get it... about hlg / dlog... both are 10 bit, is HLG just stretched version of the levels without getting clipped? good explanation though, but it give me more questios. keep it up!

Hey there Dennis, I'm not sure why HLG/DLOG has the lens distortion - if I were the DJI engineering team, I'd adjust the distortion! But that's not up to me - The difference between HLG and DLOG is how it displays colors and highlights/shadows. Each profile offers slightly (or drastically) different results when compared to other profiles. It all depends on what you intend to do with the footage. If you don't want to edit your footage heavily, I'd recommend using the "Normal" picture profiles - and trying out the LOG profiles later once you're comfortable with the Normal profile. Thanks for the comment and watching!

Do you loose any quality when you have to convert the H.265 to 264 so the computer & editor recognize the format? I am a beginner and using Hitfilm Express to learn, just don't know if I am wasting my time to convert everything if it's the same quality once it's converted.
@keith-knittel

If you're going to be exporting for RU-vid, you'll not be uploading your video with the widest color space available.. but that's not to say you shouldn't be shooting with the most colors available. Always filming with the highest quality will make your video look better overall as well. Just because RU-vid's 4k bitrate is between 30-60 Mbps, doesn't mean I'd only shoot in 60 Mbps. Shooting higher quality, then compressing down on your computer is a good idea. Because some day you may want to use that footage on a platform that allows for higher than 50 Mbps, but if you shot it in 50 Mbps - there is no increasing your bitrate to anything higher. That is a deep question that really needs it's own video (or video series) to answer, so pardon my over-simplification. Great question and thanks for asking it!!

If the editor can handle H.265 footage, you should be fine shooting in DLog or HLG. I've never used premiere pro elements but the h.265 files are enormous. What color profile do you suggest for matching these two camera’s footage? All of my drone videos from day one are H.265 DLog-M. I recently tried HLG3 on the A7iii and really liked the colors. I have found quite a few videos on YT that talk about the lens distortion with the M2P and I use Davinci Resolve (free) for my editing and I wish that I had more time to spend with learning the software as I only do editing as (one of my many) a hobby. I noticed that there is an option in DR for lens correction, but alas, it is only an option in the Pro version and it is quite a bit of money for someone that isn't making any money from my edits (yet). Can you recommend any software that gives the ability to edit my 4K 100Mbps H.265 D-LogM video with LUTs for color and the ability for lens correction for free? I know that it's a big ask, but I would be willing to try if it really does make a big difference for fish eye correction. Thanks for the great info. How much is it worth the extra time grading, when MOST people will not know the difference? Lets face it, for most drone enthusiasts, it takes a lot of time to learn effective color grading, esp. with LOG type profiles. I'm to the point of considering using HLG3 with my Sony cameras but I know the time I'm going to have to put into learning color grading, will be a lengthy learning curve. Is it hard to film with the Sony cameras in LOG/HLG profiles? That must be a huge learning curve as well(odd with a dull profile). I've just recently set my M2P to H265. Like to compare footage between the 2(264/265) to see for myself, If I can see a difference.
@keith-knittel
@keith-knittel 5 лет назад
This is not a very black and white answer. It comes down to your intentions and what you'd like to do with your footage. There is nothing wrong with shooting h.264 Normal footage all the time, but if you want to get the best quality and be able to adjust your footage, log profiles are the best way to do that. There is a learning curve, but that's the beauty of LUTs. I find what works for me and make LUTs so I can quickly adjust my footage. If you can take the time to learn how to color grade your footage to get it to look how you want it to look it can be very rewarding! But again, it's not a requirement if you're just looking to shoot in a normal profile and expose properly. A good analogy is picking a car. Most cars will get you from A to B, but if you want to customize your car to your needs it will suit you better. VERY good question, Tom - I'll be making a video dedicated to just this question.
@keith-knittel
@keith-knittel 5 лет назад
As far as filming with the LOG profiles on my A7III, it is taking some tinkering around with for sure. Especially HLG, because 1, 2 and 3 all prioritize different things. Some are tuned for noise reduction, some for dynamic range, some for a mixture of both. I use a custom profile based on HLG 3, but with some HLG 2 characteristics so it's not as extreme. It's one of those things that you can experiment around with and find what works for you, and you can be as creative as you want! For example, the shadows are super crushed in this video. It's something I'm experimenting around with in my last few videos. I love how it looks, and I'm tinkering around with it slightly in every video. Would I use this grade on client work? Probably not. But since these are my RU-vid videos, I can experiment and try things out! Thank you for asking such great questions. Compare a few different color profiles and let me know which ones you like the best!

@@trosencrantz Yeah, the h.265 will add a lot more load to your CPU than the H.264 footage. I've been really happy with my tweaked HLG 3 profile for color grading. For this channel, I go pretty crazy with the color grading (because why not!) and I've been surprised at how well the picture profile and the 1080p footage have held up. Going to start shooting in 4K to see if I can push the grade even further with the 6k downsampled 100Mbps footage! Also, I make all of my own LUTs for this RU-vid channel. D-Log M is definitely not a "true" log format

Thank you for this tutorial. You mentioned zebra stripes briefly toward then end... I don't think I've found that perfect sweet spot of exposure with D Log-M. No zebra stripes at all? How about when looking at the lake with the reflection as in the beginning of the tutorial (I imagine there were some stripes on the lake) or if you're forced to shoot midday. Any thoughts would be immensely appreciated. While I try to master the H.265 D-Log I'm honestly amazed sometimes at the dynamic range of the H.264 Normal, as was used in this edit of mine: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P_VZTH-7ATM.html. I was able to recover a surprising amount of shadow detail in the closing sunset scene. Thanks again, Zach

Hey Zach, the amount of zebra stripes is up to you! It all depends on what youre trying to go for with your footage. If you want to make a high-key lighting style video, you're going to have zebra stripes all over the place (hopefully not too many on your subject), but if you're going for a dark and moody feel - you'll likely have no zebra stripes. I tend to shoot mostly in the middle with very minimal zebra stripes when shooting log formats (in this video I made the glare on the water more blown out than I typically would, just to see how the picture profiles handled the silhouetted trees against the blown-out water). Normal picture profiles are still great though! If I know I'm filming something quick that will not be heavily graded, I'll use Normal too! Nice video as well! Thanks for such a great comment.

I clearly refuse to even understand why bother color grading. it looks to vivid, unnatural to the real life, cartoonish and thus silly. I want to see what the eye sees not fake color graded cartoon.

Depends on the look you're going for! Blade runner 2049 would be a very different movie with color accurate grading. There is no right or wrong color grade without context of what you're trying to accomplish with your choices - but sometimes color accurate and true to life is what you're going for
