Fit Over Flow! There are many cups designed for your heavy period but you still want to consider the cup's size, length, and firmness. A cup that doesn't fit or that isn't comfortable, even if it does hold more, isn't the right one for you. That said - cups or discs that hold more can improve your quality of life when you have a super heavy period. This video discusses the many options you have available - high capacity menstrual cups and menstrual discs - and walks you through their features. As always, try your new cup or disc while wearing backup until you know things are working for you.

Something else also worth mentioning is that if your periods are not only heavy but also come with cramping that is painful enough to interfere with daily activities, it could be that you have endometriosis. Please talk to your doctor if you have these kind of symptoms. If they don't listen, get a second opinion. Find someone who will listen to you so you can get a diagnosis and the right kind of treatment for you. I also would love for this channel to have more discussions about reproductive conditions such as endo, PCOS, fibroids, etc. I feel like this topic isn't discussed enough even in the reusable menstrual product world.
@PeriodNirvana
@PeriodNirvana 2 года назад
You’re right that painful periods aren’t normal and likely have an underlying medical cause. I’m not a medical professional so I stick to my expertise in products. The line can be blurry. I would say there are lots of amazing educators making content here and on social media who are far more qualified to discuss those conditions. It’s possible I will collab with an expert in the future but I myself can’t speak to those conditions and it would be irresponsible of me to try and potentially give harmful advice.
@MizzKittyBichon

@@PeriodNirvana I understand the hesitancy to not give medical advice when you don't work in that field. However, I think a collaboration with a medical professional with some expertise on reproductive disorders is an excellent idea.

As someone with fibroids I agree this needs more discussion but I think thr option is highlighting channels and pages that do discuss this rather than expecting this channel with a specific speciality on period products to thin itself out in areas it doesn’t have expertise in

The Lumma disc has changed my life. My period is so heavy that I occasionally fill a Diva cup in under an hour. This disc is a life saver when I’m at work. I can just pop into the toilet every hour or so for a quick auto dump and get some extra time without having to go through the messy task of emptying a cup in a public restroom. Without it, I would need at least 2 days every month at home. Looking forward to trying the new disc when it comes out!

I have the same kind of heavy flow issues. I have the salt cup and it fills in an hour. It's ridiculously task excessive to empty and clean every time. I resort to using tampons if I have to be outside of the house. I'm going to try a disc. Maybe I'll try the one you did. Do you ever leak? My cup leaks all the time.

I don’t know where I’d be if I never found your channel. I think back to when I dreaded and suffered through my cycle every month. (I have multiple health issues that caused a heavy flow, cramping, vaginal sensitivity, etc.) It’s women like you who are open about your experiences that helped me find the things I need to live a normal life. I am now the proud owner of four menstrual discs (and a birth control prescription) and life has never been easier. I first found out about the Nixit through your channel and I NEVER looked back. Sometimes I go back and watch your Nixit review video to relive the fond memory of first finding out about it. I really appreciate you Kim!

The Merula XL is my goldilocks cup. I'm so happy I got it! For the first time, I can go 10 hours without my cup filling up on my heaviest day and I can sleep through the night without leaking. There is definitely a learning curve to using it but it's worth it.

I been wearing a disk well working to wear cup/disk for at least 5 years, due to your videos I have learned so much more than I have with searching my questions over the years!! I feel more confident and comfortable now literally! Knowing that the auto dumping while peeing and to need to push it back into place is okay and is “normal” Thank you!

This video was made for me! I cannot thank you enough Kim bc thanks to one of your previous videos and your site where one can compare and contrast menstrual cups/discs for capacity, I found the Merula XL--what a game changer it has been. I used to be a HUGE and I mean HUGE advocate for FemmyCycle (and probably one of their biggest customers too) bc I thought that was the best of the best. Their O-ring is amazing, but as a woman with a super heavy period, I had to dump that little bastard out every hour making my clinical days at school a complete nightmare! No wonder why as FemmyCycle only holds 30ml vs Merula XL 50ml! While the Merula XL for me does require a bit more time and lots of lube to insert, it's a world of difference not only in capacity but in how many times I have to run to the bathroom to change. Simply put, it's that peace of mind that the product gives me that sold me on buying another cup and keeping it in my backpack for school. I have also purchased other products for heavy periods from your site to test out and seeing many others on this video gives me an encouraging feeling that if the Merula should ever not work for me, I have other options that I can try out. I also need to give credit and say that you are doing an excellent job at educating the public as to what products are out there and the different options that they have for their particular fit/flow concerns. To anyone out there, don't give up! There is a product out there for you and if you struggle with insertion or have horror stories of your cup falling--know that we've been there too. YAY for this video! Yay!

Thank you so much for your content. After 20 years of menstruating and 10 years of searching for a reliable and reusable menstrual product, I can finally say I found a comfortable, reliable and reusable menstrual product (menstrual discs). I can finally sleep a full night without a towel under me when I'm menstruating. I have a heavy flow, a tilted uterus, a sensitive bladder and my cervix is considered high. For reference, I would change a super tampon every hour or change my menstrual cup that supposedly holds up to 50ml every 1.5-2 hrs. For this reason, I also wore a super reusable menstrual pad in case the tampon or menstrual cup overflowed and leaked... and they almost always did. I tried several menstrual cups (Diva 1&2, Super Jennie L, Merula OS & XL and Yuuki 1 and 2), all different capacities and firmness. They all leaked because I couldn't find the right position for my tilted uterus and no matter how hard I tried, the suction holes would always clog up which caused the cups to leak. The bigger and firmer cups put too much pressure on my bladder, and I often had a UTI as a result of not being able to fully empty my bladder. I finally tried the Nixit disc - GAME CHANGER. It is SO comfortable, I can't even feel it once it's inserted which means I also don't have any issues emptying my bladder. I have had ZERO leaks, not even at night, since I started using it a few months ago. I can wear it up to 8 hours at a time on my heavy days because of the self-emptying feature, which only happens when I purposefully bear down over the toilet. I also use the Hey Zomi disc (52 ml capacity, 65ml diameter) on moderate to light days because it has a loop which makes removal easier than the Nixit. The reason I don't wear it on my heavy days is because I cannot self-empty by gently bearing down over the toilet, which means I would have to manually remove it every couple hours. In Period Nirvana's review of the Hey Zomi disc, they self-emptied very frequently, but that is not the case for me. I considered the Hello disc, but it would be too firm for me. I HIGHLY recommend menstrual discs to anyone with a tilted uterus and a heavy flow. If you're not in a hurry to buy another product, I suggest subscribing to their newsletter and waiting for a promo code/sale.

I'm so thankful I found your channel last month. I never even heard of menstrual discs before and didn't know there were so many brands of cups available now. I bought the Cora disc and nixit from your shop bc I got so tired of my cup leaking bc I had to empty it every hour for 2-3 days of heavy flow which causes so much stress and lack of sleep. I loved the experience of using the Cora disc, I got it as a beginner friendly one and will try to nixit one next time bc it holds more. My issue with the Cora was that it somehow kept rotating inside me and I couldn't easily get to the rim and it would usually be too slippery to get a grip and pull out when it was really wet, I and had to use my pelvic muscles to get it out. I'm excited for your hello disc's to come out I ordered it as as I saw your video and found the gofundme page. I am curious about the merula XL and may try it one day but so thankful for your help it has helped me get a few extra hours of sleep on those days which is beyond amazing ❤

Hello, I love the educational content you're putting out there for people everywhere. Thank you for everything you do! I wanted to ask if you've heard that most women in the prison systems are usually not given enough menstrual products and have to wear them much longer than is recommended. I was wondering if you would ever consider raising awareness on that issue or maybe even working to provide reusable cups or discs for women that are in those situations? Having the proper products for our periods is something I know I took for granted until I learned that.

I love love love my Lalicup XL!! I have a stupid heavy flow sometimes, which changed after years of being able to wear a Diva 2 comfortably for 12 hours. I noticed my cup filled in two hours :( And once it filled in one hour. So i started looking for high-capacity cups, tried out Venus and a few others. I knew I couldn't go firmer, as it applies pressure and hurts to pee lol Anyways, I ended up ordering the Lalicup (even though it was pricey, I'm glad I did). It's not that firm, comparable to Diva I guess, and the bullet shape is friendly to the bladder pressure. I only wear this cup for 2 days, but it makes a huge difference, I can wear it comfortably again for 8 hours or so.

I have a SUPER heavy period and a pretty low cervix. I can fill a Diva cup in under 3 hours for the entire first 24 hours of my period, then then every few hours for the next couple of days. For over a decade I thought that was just how life had to be. Last year I thought I had found the perfect solution (finally!) when I found the Nixit. But it turns out the way a disk sits, if it's rigid it gives me gas 😳😂 My solution is the less rigid disposable disks - and I can only wear them for about half a day at a time before I can see actually see my belly start bloating up. Our bodies are so weird. But I’m glad I found this channel to help me figure this out.

Never really realized how heavy my period was till I watched this, I use a saalt regular and she said it was regular for it to be filled up to three times throughout the entire period... I have to empty mine about 3 - 4 times a day
@PeriodNirvana
@PeriodNirvana 2 года назад
That would definitely be on the heavier side. Some people are changing every 1-3 hours on their heavy day but even 3-4 full cups a day is quite a lot. As long as the Saalt is comfortable and you don’t mind changing a few extra times you don’t have to move to a higher capacity cup. But some of these options would probably get you to only 2-3 a day.

Ooh. I have a medium-high cervix and wear Lena with 25 ml capacity. On my heavy days, I also need to change per 3-4 hours. I can push it to 6 hours (like when sleeping), but usually when I start doing activities like walking, 6 hours means the cup will feel like its ready to spill. I always consider myself to have light flow and medium on the heavy days, but now I wonder if my heavy days are indeed heavy if I have to empty it in 4 hours?

I love the Merula OS but I wanted to “upsize” to hold my heaviest flow so I tried their XL. The Merula XL would have been really helpful for me if not for the painful removal. I tend to wear it low because I have a low-average cervix height, but their no suction holes is a downside this time as the cup tends to ride up and during removal it becomes painful because it suctions my cervix :( I’d say the XL is really firm firm compared to the OS so I guess it contributes to the painful removal as well. I feel like a disc is another option I can try for my heavy flow so I’m waiting for my Hello Disc to arrive haha

I also bought the Merlua XL and had the same issue. Painful removal, difficult insterting, (I like the C fold). It also caused a lot of suction with my cervix and that became very painful so I had to stop using it. I bought a diva cup but I'm not happy with that one either though it is way easier to instert and remove.

I have being using the merula xl for 2 cycles now, on the first cycle was painful to remove and I had some minor cramps and I was too aware of the cup because of it's shape but it was marvellous at handling m flow for 5+ hours without leaking . This cycle was even way better. So some tips I use the ease the process: 1. I use the 7 fold for insertion ans once it is inside I use one finger to press it to the side to let some air in to avoid too strong suction and also for it open fully , I then do a full circle check to make sure it's completely open around my cervix; 2: When removing it I usally do it over to toilet or bathroom floor if I am going to shower , I put one finger inside the ring the use another finger of the same hand to press it to the side to release the suction ans I take it out folded (eventually bloog gets on my hands ) , rinse it then put it back it. Hope this helps if not I wish you better luck with the Hello Disc.

I had the exact same problem. Inserting the Merula XL was completely fine, the fit was nice, and I finally managed to wear it for an entire day (the other cups I had tried did not have similar capacity). But holy cows! The removal was absolutely horrendous. I usually use one finger to press against the rim of my cups to break the seal and kind of 'scoop' it out (most of the cups then kinda collapse in on themselves). Needless to say this did not happen with this cup and it was pretty darn painful. The rings are also pretty much useless if you have long nails and don't want to scratch yourself... So sad, I really wanted this one to work.

I don't know if this would matter but I'm one of those people with the higher and tilted cervix but problem is mine is so high that when I was pregnant my dr couldn't reach them with his fingers to check me to the point he said he didn't know how I even became pregnant in the first place! So what we had to do was get a nurse with the thinnest/longest fingers to check me which wasn't a fun nor easy time. Then I had to get a biopsy of my cervix done once and my obgyn had to go in with longer hemostats (spelling is wrong probably) to grab a hold of it to get a sample. Any who, my point is idk if id be able to use any of these products or id be so interested in the disks.

i have been using a regular cup for many years now, and it serves me well at the beginning and end of my cycle, but i've been looking for a higher-capacity cup for my heavy flow days (we're talking going through a super plus tampon in under an hour, some times half an hour, for a couple days straight, and ALWAYS with period undies on for leaks/back-up). all that to say, i bought the merula xl and really wanted it to work for me, but it just didn't. i don't know if it was the bell shape, or maybe the firmness, that was making it pretty uncomfy/leaky for me, but i gave up on in after trying it upwards of a dozen times. now, i don't know if i have a high or shallow cervix, i simply have no earthly idea. i don't have endless money to spend trying different products (i have also tried a disc that just seems to bunch up inside of me), but i'm willing to try a couple more before i just relegate myself to lots of tampons/period undies on my heavy days.

I usually have heavy period on my first three days, so I don't use tampon for my 4th and 5th day, but it still have some light or spotting situation on those days which I have to use pads~ I was wondering if disc can be use for those ligher days, I most concered about being too dry to insert~ Thanks!

I lose about 300 mL per cycle. It's really difficult. I am using diva cup 1 right now, but it fills fast during the first 48 hours. I am watching this to try something else. I have two lena sizes (1 and 2?). I just don't feel comfortable wearing size 2, which is why most of the high capacity cups don't work for me. I also couldn't do diva cup 2 without pain.

At the time, the merula was the highest capacity cup and it didn't fit😡 I tried and tried to make it work because at the time my flow laughed at the Diva cup For me nixit didn't stay in place, so it leaked even on my light days.... I like the Hello disc, just need it to be higher capacity.

Honestly, I have a heavy period my first 3 days and literally I have to empty my cup every 2 hours. It almost always leak at night until the 3rd day breaks. Ive started to use period undies with a cup those days that helps manage this.

@@constellaation I'm sorry I know this comment is crazy old but as a woman who struggled with CRAZY HEAVY periods prior to 2 kids and cramping so strong I had to miss work during the first day or so of my cycle, I learned the hard way many different products that make my period no longer have to be something I dread, so i always love to pass on my knowledge whenever it may help another fellow sufferer out as I seen nobody had answered your question yet. I still am a pretty serious bleeder now that I've had my kids, but the extreme cramping issues have mostly gone by the wayside due to changing to the reusable silicone products. Those super chemical filled tampons always make it seem like you're a much heavier bleeder than a girl might actually be in my opinion, due to how they small pellet absorb your blood, versus basin collecting, so when I first switched I seriously thought that switching made my period lighter and slightly shorter in length, which of course made no sense, I think what was really happening was I was no collecting instead of absorbing which makes it much easier to see how little (or more) you're actually losing in a cycle. And makes for quicker and easier bleeding so it doesnt seem as severe. It certainly no longer was as much as the tampons lead me to believe originally. I also find that the tampons with the chemicals may have been the biggest source of my extreme cramping, and in my opinion that part actually makes a lot of sense. These days I find as long as the cup or disc I use is the right fit for my body, cramping is pretty minimal, and I can mercifully now change even a cup out roughly 4 hours later than I did my tampons back in the day (it was easily every 2 hours for a super tampon, now it's about 6 hours with a cup and the full 12 with a disc), and pairing either of those with a good pair of heavy duty period panties saved my life as well! Leaking is no longer a problem like it was for me prior, because even if I had a bit of leaking from an overflow, or a learning curve with a new cup or disc, I would have a really great protective barrier in place. Okay now after all that rambling I've just done I wanted to recommend some of my favorite products that helped to change my period. The first is the flex reusable disc (the disposable ones also are really great in a pinch or for a cheap option to try out discs to see if they'll work for you). This one has a 70ml volume and is the longest I've ever been able to go before changing out thanks to the genius that is auto dumping (I can go a full 12 recommended hours before I have to take it out and adjust things!). The nixit is a disc that gets alot of complaints about being too soft despite the high capacity for some people, so I like the reusable flex because its rim is much firmer and so insertion and opening is a breeze, but it has the same high capacity as the nixit. The second product I swear by is the bambody heavy flow period panties on amazon. They come in a pack of 3 for about 35 dollars, or certain styles come in a single pair for about 10 bucks. They're all really great at providing full coverage (front to back) protection at a reasonable price point and the best is that they now come in more colorful options instead of just the black only option they used to have about 5 years ago when I first discovered them. Sorry for the crazy long winded message, I hope this helps you!

@brandigore6286 Thank you so much for the detailed reply!!! It's great to hear your story. i appreciated it so much ❤️ Back before 2020, I used to use pads (I'm from a SEA country, tampons are not as common as pads back then) and would go through a box of the biggest one every month (around 31.5cm i think it covers my underpants like a diaper lol). I'm a heavy bleeder, but now I have also found that my period finished a lot faster using a cup. I bought the bigger size of the saalt cup, and it's better than before as I can get a longer wear than the small one. But on the 2nd day, which is my heavies day, I still leaked a lot at night 😭 So i use reusable pads, but it's kind of uncomfortable. I tried to order a menstrual disc after using a cup for 2 years, still waiting for my order to come, it's from lumma cup, i hope it's a good one too 🤣 it shipped from Australia so it's easier to get to my country. I love to try period panties, tho 🥰. Honestly, switching to reusable period products is one of the best decisions for my period experience in general. I feel better, worry less about the waste, and it's convenient as i don't have to shop for different size of pads every month

I have a few questions that I hope you can help with. My 12 year old just started their period and right now they are ok with pads but I know eventually they will want to try a cup because they have times they are pretty active and pads will not work for those times. How are cups if you haven't lost your virginity? I didn't start wearing tampons until after I lost mine so I'm not sure what I should tell them to expect. My second question is about pelvic floor weakness since you mentioned that at the start of this video i thought maybe you might have some advice. After 4 kids mine is weak and needing help. Is there anything that will help other then doing Kegels because that doesn't seem to be helping much and I now fear each time I feel the urge to sneeze lol.
@Raven74408
@Raven74408 Год назад
I'm a virgin and I'm able to fit a light tampon with no problem. As long as the cup isn't wider than a light tampon when folded a certain way, then it usually works for me. I also need to apply lube in order to insert it. The tightness of my vagina makes it difficult to remove traditional cups, so that's also something to consider. The cup is already taking up most of the space in my vagina, so trying to fit both of my fingers up my vagina to break the seal was difficult and painful. Because of this I switched to the Flex cup since it removes like a tampon and I don't have to reach inside.

you can also try period underwear for them. the period co 'sporty' version , goat union and bambody absorbent would be good budget friendly options and are pfa free. the period co also gives you 50% off of your first order.

I love the auto dumping of discs. I use flex disc (disposable) and it works great. It Dumps a little each time when I go to the bathroom every few hours so I don’t worry about it overflowing. I like that I don’t have to completely take it out to empty. I just push it back in place (it moves forward a little while dumping), and wipe good. They’re coming out with a reusable one too the end of March I think! I recently preordered it. I haven’t had much luck with the other reusable discs so far.

I would just like to point out that all of LaliCup’s cups are high capacity! Try the half diamond fold. It worked best for me in opening my cup inside in its proper place as you insert it in an upright position as well (unlike the punchdown which leans a bit sideways). I also have a low cervix. If this fold is still uncomfortable, try using lube.
