got my first guit fiddle in 84. played it (a harmony) through a plastic service merchandise amp for 5 years until the first peavy rage came out. i was convinced that this is what i needed to sound like my heroes. after convincing my mom to shell out the $99, I soon found out i was wrong, so i decided it was the DOD hard rock distortion pedal that was needed to finally sound exactly like my heroes. wrong again. Next, Mr.Jim Rubino, from Rubino's Music in Merrillville Indiana convinced me that what I needed was the Digitech GSP-5. It was way out of my league, budget wise, but Mr.Rubino saved the day by introducing me to layaway. A year later, that GSP-5 was mine. I used the "Eddie Van Halen" preset but I still didn't sound like my heroes. It wasn't until I was in my 40's when I took a step back and peaked over my mountain of gear and realized it was practice that made me sound like my heroes. Oh well, it was fun along the way and I sure made some music store owners happy :)

Absolutely! I look at the mountain of gear that I have accumulated over the past 32 years.... No matter what Guitar, amp, effects, etc that I use, it still just sounds like me. My early dedication to leaning remains apparent, but the quest for the perfect tone always ends in the laziness of my practice routine. Chasing that dream around the country was fun, using big loud amps is always fun.., but these little bedroom amps seriously kick ass! They capture the essence of much higher valued gear; at least close enough to properly steer good decision making in which amp to save up for, while providing quite impressive range and fairly accurate representation of the tonal character of the model being emulated. These little amps serve a much underappreciated purpose; to inspire the creativity and imagination of the next innovator enough to follow that dream to wherever it leads. I Love my VIP 1; at low volume it is absolutely brutal and simultaneously beautiful.

Yeah, I have to agree... Peavey seems to, primarily, be a "metal/high gain" amp company... & God bless 'em for it! Though, they DO still put out models (like the Nashville for steel guitars... that I WISH did high-gain) that absolutely CAN'T touch "high-gain" territory; still, they're pretty damn good at it too! I think Hartley Peavey is a secret metal-head in the shadows... eventhough he LOOKS like a guy that probably listens to outlaw-country and belongs in the world of Smokey & the Bandit. Haha

Isn’t the size of the speaker/cabinet always the limitation of an ENTRY level amplifiers. I have put output jacks on my small practice amps like the Marshall Lead 20 or 40 watt mini amp . I have even done it with my Pignose battery powered amp. Once you plug them into a 4/12 cabinet, look out they freaking scream. The tone is SO MUCH BETTER when you put the output through a quality set of 12” speakers. Of course the output jacks cut the speaker in the cabinet of the amp off when you plug the external cabinet in. It’s the speaker size/quality, I think more than the cabinets of the little amps that makes their tone cheesy but the cabinet size does affect the low end a lot. The bigger the cab the better bass tone

Really cool how it has a usb. Growing up, I used to have to wait for my parents to leave the house to record my riffs, and even then, it was a terrible room recording using the mic that came with the computer. This is direct-in. All they need is to download reaper or audacity and they're good to start writing riffs. Although, I can't help but think about how times have changed since I owned a practice amp like this. VSTs are great, most computers can handle the processing power now, and a laptop and an interface is smaller profile than a practice amp. (assuming where you're going has powered speakers) Also the Friedman BE mini is only $50 more and while it doesn't have as many features, it's a better amp long term. Not too forget you have more versatility with being able to choose a guitar cab and the speaker inside it right from the start. (even if that's more cost upfront) That being a more old school approach instead of just getting a VST and using a preset so you don't have to think about it. Too many options now, personally I think peavey needs to put that 12" speaker back in or maybe continue further into the audio interface realm. Something even smaller than this that is an audio interface first, practice amp second could actually be pretty cool and probably more future proof.

Actually the red stripe Revolution 112 takes the Bandit one level further with its ultra channel. It's closest rival would be the 212 XXL, which is considerably more burdesome to carry. I like the Revolution more than the Transformer and all other iterations of the transtube series of which I've owned probably 20 to 40 over the years. I consider the Revolution 112 the pinnacle of Hartley's transtube series but you're spot on with the Bandit. It's an absolute killer and will 🤘 eat most of these digital Borg boxes for breakfast.

The tube Vypyrs were sick af, Idk why they got rid of em
@Keshro

Probably because tubes are now hard (and really expensive) to get and they want to use tubes for higher end amps.

Sweet water finally got these amps back in stock. After a year and a half of waiting the x3 will be on my doorstep today. Hope it blows the x1 out of the water and doesn’t have that boxed in sound you were talking about
@alanporter9556
@alanporter9556 Год назад
It's the X1 that has the boxed sound. The single 10" isn't great. The X2 to the X3 are killer, no huffiness or whoofing. I'm sure you know that by now though 🤘

Considering the price and 10 inch speaker it barks pretty darned good. It's not trying to take a Boogie or Deizel to school. But that would be asking an awful lot for the price and size. Peavey has always been solid.

Thank you so much for reviewing THIS first thing back from your vacation! I've been highly considering the 50w X2 myself, and will probably get one after watching this review! Only thing I've been really wondering though is, if I use the right type of XLR to 1/4" cable, how will it sound with a microphone singing through it as a portable PA when I'm not using it for guitar? I'm currently using a TINY little VOX practice amp and utilizing the "acoustic" setting for my mic and it doesn't sound bad at all minus the fact that it's completely lacking in bass response and volume due to its TINY size. 🤔

Not the x the VIP 1 and 2 ! If you put a sheet of cardboard over the back of the little guy ( don’t know why the made it completely open) it actually sounds fantastic!! I tried an actual piece of plywood lol but the cardboard worked better!! Wish I could share the tones I’ve gotten.. Using a 7 string with 10-62’s ! Bang!!

I can dig this. Sounds good and looks sinister ;) Could go on about Peavey since i've been a brand fan since the '70s and owned a few of their amps (Mace, SP112) but now have a Vypyr 15 i bought almost 10 years ago used at GC for $49.95. Still surprises me. There's some vid called "abandoned Peavey Factory" or something. Pretty heartbreaking. I guess all MIC now,,,,not sure.

Nah for metal and overall good at everything., I would still highly recommend boss katana, sounds ferrous when you install sneaky amps pack. Actual useful and good sounding effects ( this Peavy has pretty aweful sounding and useless effects) there's a reason 9/10 amps sold if this price point is a katana, it just kicks ass and does everything well. The katana needs a little TLC for modern metal sound with the global eq but it will get there easily and better than most

Love the "Another Day-like" solo happening. I find myself doing the same thing to test how bends and vibrato sound on an amp :D I really wish Peavey would get deeper into the serious amp game. Give us some lunchbox amps with 6L6's/6CA7/EL34, like the MT15, and Fireball 25. Who tf is using more than 50w these days? And who wants to break their back with a massive 40-50lb.100w amp? Give us 50/25w, IR loaders, and load boxes built-in "Ironball SE" style...I really feel like those amps are kind of the future right now, but then again, that's just me .
