The old Derwent watersoluble Metallic pencils (with the silver body) were discontinued in 2020 to be replaced with the non-watersoluble ones (gold body). The reason why the price of the old ones is so high (and not representative) is because its third party sellers capitalising on their discontinued old stock. You can get a tin of 12 of the new ones just like the old set for a more reasonable price that the bougie watercolour set 😊.
I got a set of 12 Derwent metallic silver pencils on clearance from hobby lobby a couple years ago for 2$ and something. That was quite a deal for sure.
When you’re good at something you’re just good!!! You both are great!! Researching, explaining, teaching….( and I’m a former trainer so I know). You are both great!!!!!!!!!
That Faber-Castell set is the equivalent of about $25 here in the UK as of July 2022. That's a heck of a price rise in 4 years, maybe they are cheaper in the US.
Dang it!!!! Yet another delivery on the way to me thanks to your videos! Lol My first order contains items suggested by a previous recommendation from your videos and I had to place another one to grab a set of those beautiful cretacolor pencils! These will be great for backgrounds and the size “oh my”! I love them!! ❤️ I appreciate all you and Steve do to help make my coloring experience so “Blissful”!!! I’m gaining ground past the beginner status thanks to you guys!! Keep the great content coming!! Have a blessed day! 🌹
Bravo to you and Steve for another in depth comparison. Your attention to detail are to be commended. Some of them I've never even heard of! I promised myself no more pencil purchases so I will stick to that, for now.... Thanks again!
thanks for providing the demo for each brand, but still I can't choose from Metallic Showdown because some looked similar, so I'm gonna have to trust the brand I'm familiar with (Faber Castel)
Great review. Just in time for Easter, as I have 5 little girls in my life. Ordered the FC set and black sketchbooks to go in their baskets. Love getting creative supplies for them.👍☺️
I have used the Derwent metallic watercolor pans before and they are done pretty well! I am not sure why they were included with the pencils that are not water soluble? I do not use the metallic pencils very often. I tried to use them for car bumpers and chrome but they do not look right. I get better results just drawing or painting in the reflections from the bumper or chrome pieces. Going either very light or much darker than the surrounding area. Wonderful video and spectacular testing video too!
I find it delightfully human that you misspelled pencils in the title of the rating sheet. I love your site and this just helps me not feel overwhelmed by so many things I am learning from you.
What a cool test. :D Greetings from Germany where Faber-Castell is from. The red line is for small kids that go to school for the first time. Blue is for students. Green is for professionals.
@@ColoringBliss Yes, the blue line of Faber Castell pencils is the Goldfaber series. There are two versions of pencils in this series, one water soluble and the other not water soluble. However, the larger sets have 48 pencils only.
@@michela5411 I hope they will make more colors in the future. :D Goldfaber Aqua have colors you can't find in the Polychromos or Albrecht Dürer. It's a small 12er Set they call pastell. (I don't care for water-soluble pencils, so I don't have them. I would love to have them in the regular Goldfaber as well.)
Thank you for the great review. I like seeing a variety of colored pencils. I like to try different kinds. I can't afford the expensive ones. I use Prismacolor & Shuttle Art Pencils a lot when I color. Coloring is my pain reliever. I enjoy your videos very much. You & Steve are a lot of fun to watch. Have a wonderful weekend
I would have loved to see a comparison with the old school Prismacolors, as they did have 12 metallics, just as a side bonus. It would have been nice to see if they would have been the winner!
Very informative. The Qianshan look identical to the Brutfuner metallic set I own. I wonder if they're manufactured in the same facilities. I also own 3 other sets reviewed here and have to agree that the Eco and Crayola are impressive for what you pay.
I haven’t found many metallic pencils that are any good, even Polychromos metallics don’t really lay down properly, I usually add metallics with gel pens or paint pens or spend time on shading for a metallic effect.
The metallic sheen of these pencils is at its best when you burnish but that doesn’t leave much for subtlety and variation. You have to reach for other products to achieve even better results that have more control.
Thanks again and again and again! These comparisons help me so much and I really enjoy them too! P.S. Arteza now has a set of 50 metallics and 50 Pastels! FSS might strike again!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TESTING AND EXPLAINING EVERYTHING. I JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW THAT OTHER REVIEWS OF THESE PENCILS COMPLAIN ABOUT THEM GIVING OFF OR PRODUCING TOO MUCH DUST AND IT'S DIFFICULT TO GET RID OF. WE DIDN'T HEAR ABOUT THAT FROM YOU. WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AND I HOPE THEY CAN COLOR LIKE THAT OVER BLACK, ACRYLIC PAINT. WISH ME LUCK.❤
Loved this post. Had me on the edge of my seat! By the way…Have you done a similar contest using fluorescent pencils? If not, that would be great to see, especially under UV “black light” compared to normal light.
You crack me up. You get so excited over colored pencils. Only a fellow colored pencil hoarder would understand your excitement. Thank you so much. I’m working with my pencils today. Have a wonderful one.
😂😂 I prefer to call myself a collector. After all…hoarders don’t curate, organize, use, and care for their stash. My collection is very organized…in fact, I could tell you exactly where each brand is right now in my studio…without looking! I’m happy to hear that my joy also brings you joy. It is fun to share my passion for art products.
Hi! I was looking for a metallic colored pencils review & came upon your channel. I wanted to buy a small set of excellent quality metallic colored pencils. I had seen Prismacolor had a big metallic colored pencil set & didn’t want to invest in another big set of theirs. I loved your video immediately! I’ve been a diehard Caran d’Ache fan since I was a child. I fell in love with the creamy texture and shine ✨. I bought the 6 pack for 33% off. The price before tax was $13.37. I debated on getting the winner, the Cretacolor of 12, but it’s $24.99 and not on sale. And if my Prismacolor sharpener doesn’t work, I have to buy theirs. I may do that in the future, bc they’re amazing. Actually, one of your subscribers mentioned she bought them upon YOUR recommendation in her review on Amazon. Ty for this video. I’d love for you to review the Prismacolor Metallic Colored Pencils. ✏️
Question, why would there be a water soluble metallic pencil that loses its shine when wet? Makes no sense, this manufacturer needs to consult with the lab again.
I have Creta set and I don't like it much but I probably had too high of expectations when I first bought it. I do like all of my Holbein metallic but you would have to get them open stock because they only come in the big set, and there are just a few, basically traditional colors of gold, silver, etc. However they are my favorite metallic pencils and do a very good highlight on things I need to look a little shinny however for the most part when I want metallic bling I just use my watercolors with just a touch of water.
Loved this video! I got some fabercastell metallics from the supermarket recently and they were ok. Those cretacolours look like they’d be great for sore hands
I saw the eeboo ones and had a flashback to when I bought some at Whole Foods for Christmas one year and recently I’ve been trying to remember the brand again. I loved those colored pencils dearly when I was younger and was so happy to have shiny pencils.
Thank you for doing this video. Great job! I also read your blog on this and left a comment there. Could you please post a ranking without the cost factor? I am curious to know if the rankings would alter. At the end of the day, these are art pencils, and you want your artwork to look the best regardless of cost.
Thank you for your review. I just would like to add a piece of information about the new version of Derwent metallic pencils: unlike the other sets, they are all lightfast, except for 2 of them. 17 out of 20 of them have also a very high lightfastness rating, so that they can be used by artists who sell their artworks. I do not the lightfastness of the water soluble version of Derwent metallic pencils, as there' no longer information on the Derwent website.
I had the old Derwent set for years. So when the 20th anniversary set came out at like the same price for 20 pencils I bought it. It's immensely better than the water-soluble set that's been discontinued. There is an issue with a few of the colors moving more than I would like with water. Recently did a comparison of the 2 and I tested all 20 colors. There are 8 or 9 of the colors that actually move quite a bit. Also if you compare the 2 side by side the colors are different for most of the pencils.
That’s what I was thought. It didn’t make sense to me to have 2 lines of metallic but…they also have multiple lines of all their products. So, I wasn’t totally sure.
I think the Fabre castell is the shiniest. And I find it interesting the difference in the tone of all the golds. Some are very yellow or brown or green
This was both beautiful and sad! I have the Raffiene pencils. BUT I also have the Faber Castell ones. I guess I know which ones I will go to for the metallic sheen!! LOL
Like I said in the beginning…the results are as objective as possible, but in the end, very subjective. Please don’t let my review stop you from enjoying those beautiful pencils.
I just got a set of kalour pencils, I love the metallics in the set a lot!! I don’t know if they are available as a separate set or just as part of a larger set
I was hoping to see John Shen metallic color pencils too. I have bought those just from local shop (not from art shop or something like that). Perhaps you don't find those from Amazon, Ebay or anywhere in your country? That's a pity, because I like them quite a lot. Although I don't have much other brands to compare them with.😕 Sorry abt my bad english.
Have you done battle on pastel colored pencil? I've been looking around yt but not much clue I could get, there's another set of pastel set I'm interested to know, Indra 72 set but it's unavailable on Amazon at the moment.
Off subject here but what brand hair color is yours? It's gorgeous.. I love metallic everything, I'm getting braver with pencils now otherwise I'm a gel pen girl. Thanks for the advice.
Interesting video....i was surprised about crayola metallics....do you think they are readily available at micheals or walmart???? Mikelle art mom1✍👩🎨🎨
Great video....although knowing that you are a perfectionist, I am playing "proof-reader" for you at the moment and want to let you know that on the worksheet, in the large title, the word Pencil is spelled PENiCL. I knows everybody makes mistakes, so I thought I would let you know.
I have a question, so I use pencils on white paper and mainly don't blend them I just use the solid color for my cartoon art. I am looking for metallic colors other then silver and gold for my art, I currently need a blue to finish this knight that I am currently coloring. I would prefer a waxy type cause it pops out more and doesn't leave white spots from not filling in the paper, what would you suggest?
have the whole set of derwent metallic and the castle arts metallic, want to buy the cretacolor brilliant, but i read these pencils are thicker, can i use them to color in Johanna basford's books, and what is the name of the sharpener?
