After 20 years and 5 Tacomas, I took a chance a year ago and traded my 2020 AG TRD Pro for a 22 Pro-4x. Currently have 26k miles, a full ADO Bilstein lift w UCAs, Wildpeaks, a Westin bumper w winch and a ton more little mods and add-ons. Handles like a beast off road and is a far better driving experience on road. Don't miss the Taco at all...
I bought a 2017 tacoma and traded for a 22 pro4x. The taco was a great truck, but rode like a two horse wagon. The pro4x is a really nice truck, love it.
I agree. This generation Frontier looks visually appealing. I love the interior design as well. Great job Nissan 👏🏽. Yours truly, a Chevy Colorado owner
Wow! Just came back from an offroad trip and camp out with a group of friends here in California through Big Bear, down Rattlesnake Canyon to Johnson Valley, through the high desert and then to Cleghorn 4x4 trail. Our boy with his 24 Frontier Pro 4x was struggling BAD on these tight, exposed and endless trails and switch backs. We all found out just how bad his trucks turning radius and heavy steering is on the trails, and we had to save his truck more than once using straps and even one of our winches so he wouldn't get it stuck or die. We were so glad it wasn't heavily modified or else, who TF knows how much worse it would have been with a lift, larger tires and more weight and such. It was the only truck that we had to stop for regularly and get out and guide, just so he could make a simple switch back. 🤦🏾♂️ He's only had it for a month and after his ordeal this past long 4th of July pre weekend, he already made up his mind and is going back to a 3rd gen Tacoma lol! He literally traded his 19 Tacoma TRD pro for it and is now kicking himself for doing so. Long story short: the frontier is not trail friendly and I would recommend that you NEVER go solo on some isolated and potentially dangerous or advanced trails. I go solo on my Taco all the time with my kids and lady, but wouldn't do the same on a frontier. I guess I love my family too much. Also, he tore the F out of the back sides of the rear seat back rests folded down, since they are lined with weak cloth, after putting his fridge and some other materials that he would carry on his Tacoma for the trip lol! How TF you don't line them with hard materials like the Taco and other trucks?
100% dead on. That is the biggest reason why I traded my 22 Pro 4x for a 24 4runner trd pro. I had a 17 Taco OR before the 4x that I traded in to get the 4x and I missed it so bad after the first few offroad outings on the 4x. The 4x struggled to do the things my old taco breezed through when it was stock. I hated having my lady or my friends have to get off and guide me on a turn almost everytime. Was embarrassing actually. Feels so good having my 4runner now. So much better offroad as well.
This guys story is identical to mine. I had pretty well decided on a Tacoma, frontier wasn’t on my radar because I really didn’t like the way the old body looked. I randomly saw an ad and loved the redesigned body.
Nissan may have a small aftermarket but they have everything you need. Titan swap. Hefty Fabworks already has a full line of armor for the new gen. I bought my Xterra when shopping for 4Runners. The cost difference was insane. Just the amount saved covered my titan swap and some armor. The Xterra has more power, locker, and now has ~10 inches of travel.
I used to own a 2010 Nissan Xterra Pro4X, and that thing was a tank! It would go anywhere and on any terrain. Miss it and wish I never traded it. Bought it brand new back in 2010, and traded it in on a 2015 Armada.
I just signed my bill of sale to the same truck today, white Pro 4x. I was looking for Tacomas as well, but the seating position was the main reason for me, the Frontier has way more comfortable seating and very similar overall options or more.
Frontier= Crawl ratio 60:1 fully boxed titan frame (ability to titan swap suspension/engine) , Dana 44 locking rear (pro4x) , dana front diff, spicer transfer case, powerful vq motor, rear disc brakes, bullet proof and made in USA. Tacoma= 33:1 crawl ratio, C channel frame (on going corrosion frame recalls) , rear drum brakes, now made in Mexico, reliability declining and Toyota tax.
Have had both. Currently a taco. I think the nissan is better constructed. Much better seating. More comfortable. Better cabin. Better power. That said. Tacoma is better off road, probably last longer. As a daily driver or everyday I'd definitely go Nissan. As a play toy and long term I'd go tacoma. The reasons people dont like the motor and tranny in the tacoma is partly why it'll last longer. It basically drives at 1100 rpm. It never even works. Torque doesn't pull until 4000 rpm. The truck is basically just never under stress. It's overbuilt on top of it. It has to hit 4k before its even in the torque to stress. It never does in normal driving. It'll pretty much idle along lowest rpm possible. The frame is great off road it has give. Less likely to get a wheel off the ground especially with after market or off road suspension. Nissan definitely more power and better driving though

Frontier is no good outside the light and safe fire roads or streets. We found that out the hard way.
@@erod6468 Tell me you work in Toyota sales with out telling me you work in Toyota sales. News flash The frontier has the same turning radius as the new Tacoma and the steering is heavier because its hydraulic which is wayyyy more reliable then the new tacomas electric power steering.. I would trust Frontier any day over Tacoma to get me out alive which I've done in mine wheeling in death valley but Thanks I needed the laugh.
I have a ‘95 Nissan D21 in my garage next to my 09 Tacoma TRD, and the Nissan creams the Tacoma off-road - stay with me - It has a lower crawl ratio, ring and pinion closer to a Dana 44 from factory, than the Tacoma’s 8” gears, fully boxed chassis, and most of the guts are protected by the chassis. Nissan makes the most overlooked trucks on the market. My ‘95 Nissan also has more ground clearance stock than my 09 Taco does with a 2.5” lift. Guessing Nissan has kept up the good work, and kept quiet about it… great to see a video about the Frontier. I’d just about trade the Taco for one if only Nissan made a manual. Oh, and if Nissan dumped the bad partnerships… Bring it back Nissan!!!
Your 95 is a smaller truck than your 09 tacoma. The 90s trucks always looked higher off the ground. Compare it to a 09 frontier and you will find the same thing
I chose a second generation Nissan Frontier Pro-4X over all the newer trucks including the Tacoma for a reason: a long and proven track record. In every comparison I watched online and article I read the Frontier did everything the competition did for less money and has been around forever so all the problems were fixed long ago. It's a bullet proof platform and parts are cheap if anything does go wrong. The aftermarket for it is weak admittedly compared to other trucks but there is enough to get it where you want it to be. Plenty of performance and suspension modifications available if you know where to look. I'm hoping with the new generation the Frontiers get more attention and aftermarket support.
I absolutely love mine. I put in a Nisstec 4" lift with 285 BFG AT2s. These trucks definitely need a little lift, and they are good to go. I've been a Nissan owner my whole life. Hardbody, 1st Gen, 14' Titan and now 22 P4X. Always reliable trucks and I feel haven't gotten a look until this came out. Should make a lot of folks happy.
Happy to hear you enjoyed the video! We definitely want to see some pictures of your Nissan in our gallery sometime. www.trailbuiltoffroad.com/add-wheel-offset
I just picked one up for a little under MSRP. You just have to know how to new car shop because all it took was me hitting up two different dealerships.
I found a beige 2023 Nissan Pro-4X near here, started dealing from $51,000. The dealer wouldn't go below $45,000, so I left for awhile. Went down the road and picked up a 2023 GMC Sierra 4x4 "work truck" for $37,000! Not too many bells & whistles, but much more truck, interior room for the family, somewhat better mileage (!), and superior ride. I love the Pro 4x look, but with Presidents Day incentives, and $5000 loyalty discount, I walked out paying $37,000, with no dickering.
I'm happy to see Nissan finally gave the USA a new model. Europe, Australia (and pretty much everywhere else) have had the newer D23 Nissan Navara for the last 5-6 years with these same great features like the diff-lock and 360 degree cameras. It's a much more capable platform than the old D40. Hope this means we'll see more Frontier content
Locking diff has been a NISMO/P4X option from the start. The update gave visual refresh, infotainment upgrade (with the cameras) from the Titan, and a powertrain boost. Same frame, same suspension. The D40 already was capable.
Thanks for covering the frontier they need more recognition. I rock a 2nd gen less tech less failure points. Takes a bit for searching to get after market parts but they're out there. The more we support nissan the more they make us parts.
These frontiers are really nice. Personally I don’t care for them but they are nice looking trucks. Will serve him well for years to come and you have done some tasteful mods.
Just picked up my 2022 Pro-4X in Tactical Green with a RC 2.5” lift kit and suspension, 33” K02’s on Fuel Covert wheels. It’s a daily head turner and I love it.
American ? Lol most likely your truck is made in Mexico if it's a GM and Ford keeps sending is jobs away from .... Americans. Those "foreign" companies employ millions of real Americans not corporate America that doesn't give a rtz azz about the people of America.
Appreciate the support. If you ever need any help finding anything for your Frontier just shoot us a message or email and we can help find some options for you!
I own a 2005 frontier w/Titan swapped suspension and I can’t stress how underrated these trucks are. Driven to and from BC, Canada > SoCal. Thing has been on many trails… at 220k miles, I can’t ever see me parting ways with it. So VK swap is likely in its future as well as many more miles.
@@TrailBuilt it’s always going through southern Oregon into California, Especially during winter. Mountainous roads, steep grades, and black Ice. Engaged 4hi a couple times just to get traction. Honestly, thing has been a trooper… especially with all the situations I’ve put it through.
The new model Nissan Frontiers are way better looking than the older models in my opinion. So much potential and hope to see this truck in future videos. Very entertaining video guys! You got a beast of a truck, Zach! Enjoy the trails!!!
@@Evildaddy911 and now I can’t see the frontier the same again. Thanks a lot Matt! Haha You’re right though, the body styles of both trucks can be seen in this frontier. I honestly think it’s a good move by Nissan by designing the truck with those similarities. 👍🏽
I love my PRO-4X. It is a great platform and the engine is very good. The ride quality is best in segment. I traded in my 2020 Ranger for the Nissan. I love the Gun Metallic too. I leased mine so it will remain stock. I plan on purchasing my next truck.
LOL! The loud dirtbikes might’ve been a group of us that were up there about the time this was filmed. We had one guy that struggled with one of the rock face climbs. 😂
He said the same thing happened to me i wasn’t looking at truck but almost went Toyota then boom Toyota screwed me and i saw an add for this and checked it out. Was sold it such a better package than the Tacoma. It’s more features and built U.S.A. baby.
Basically went through the same thought process as Zack, wheeled F150 for years but wanted something smaller for tighter trails. I saw P4X and was sold, better value than Tacoma, Gladiator with nice modern interior. I did the same lift, added 285 70 17 Toyo AT3. Love it. Can't wait for accessories to open up for this truck. Great video thanks Josh and Zack for sharing.
@@simper-fortis Nissan Hardbody, first and second gen Frontier showed their reliability. Nissan has proven, since the 80s, that they can compete with Toyota when it comes to mid size trucks. Nissan financial history is what has tarnished their name.
I put the rough country coil overs on my 2022, with the upgraded shocks from RC in the back too when I did the lift… noticed a smoother ride right off the bat. Love the truck!
Having owned 2 previous gen Frontiers, I can say you definitely missed out. It was a great little truck and the 2022 improved almost everything it needed to from what I can tell, although no vehicle is perfect. I also owned a 2020 Tacome TRD Offroad and I hated it. Weak engine, gear hunting transmission, extreme chassis vibrations, etc. I absolutely hated the way it felt behind the wheel. The Tacoma is definitely overrated and over-hyped by the fanboy crowd, it does not deserve the praise it gets. I plan on purchasing my 3rd Frontier pretty soon when prices come down to a reasonable level, probably a 2023 Pro4x.
I like how they put up better than tacomas because they know all the tacoma owners are gonna click on it and comment making their channel more popular. 😅😅😅😅
I’ve been watching a ton of reviews on this truck and I like it better then the Tacoma and honestly never thought I’d say that, the new Tacoma dropping the V6 also was a definite no for me, I love a naturally aspirated V6 much more reliable.
I'm on the same boat. Was Subaru wrx guy looking into trucks now and obviously the Tacoma was my first choice. But now seeing the frontier in person, it looks better Imo
Frontier is almost as dependable as taco's but i also like that everything isn't electronic and you have to go through 5 screens to access. they are simple and i like that
I just purchased a used 2023 Nissan frontier midnight edition with 6,600 miles love the new body style has a hefty look eventually I’ll have the RC 2 inch lift put on
I have a 2022 Pro four X, black.. I enjoy your video.. I do have a right tail light that I ordered because I cracked mine. Insurance paid for the damage so I have an extra tail light for a Pro4X right one if you know anybody when is it assault for half the cost 275.00 brand new ..off-roading stuff happens..
Dobinson’s makes a bunch of suspension components. They have two different 2-3” suspension kits and adjustable billet upper control arms. Granted the kits are much more expensive.
All dogs off-road and z1 off road are most common spots that make lifts. They both have projects to look at what u can get outta ur truck. Also nisstec and radflo make good lifts for the truck.
Do some research on the ole Google and you’ll quickly find very reputable companies pushing out great non spacer purpose built lifts. All dogs Offroad is one in particular that comes to mind.
I bought a Ranger Tremor instead of a Tacoma before the Pro 4X was out. And it was an easy decision. If this truck had been out, it would have been a much tougher decision. I’d like to see a side by side comparison of the two.
Probably super easy. The rangers platform is from like 2013 and It was super outdated since it got to the US. The engine is the only decent thing in it. For me it was the tacoma because I off road and they don't offer any decent lifts for the frontier, they only have one but it's way overpriced and not even that good. I personally think all trucks come with absolute garbage suspension except for the trd pro and the raptor. I'm actually excited for the new trucks to come out. The new colorado and ranger look super nice. 👌
@@mattlee4807 the tacoma has crap suspension but the trd pro has comparable suspension ? I'm not sure what suspension exactly comes with the Ford. I'd have to do some research on the suspension internals. Trd pro has top of the line fox suspension, even the aftermarket fox shocks aren't as advanced
@@mattlee4807 ok so the tremor has fox 2.0 progressive fox shocks with resi in the back Tacoma has fox 2.5 all around with internal bypass and rear resi . So the trd pro suspension is actually far superior over the tremor by a lot! Like not even comparable to the fox 2.0. The tremor actually has fox 2.0 in front that are the cheapest shocks fox offers and the rear are only slightly better than the cheapest, but still way better suspension over the stock ranger garbage. However I personally wouldn't recomend anything bellow 2.5 in the front for any truck if you do any higher speed dirt roads/washboard.
Nissan trucks have always had reliable transmissions you're thinking of the early cvts found in some of the Nissan cars. This flat out beats the the Tacoma in all areas down to the frame
I had a 99 pathfinder manual 4wd lots of issues clogged egr , evap charcoal canister , vent solenoid l, death wobble caused by latteral rod bushing failure, cracked exhaust manifold, premature waterpump gasket leaking, rear differential leak etc…. All occurred less than 100K mileage.
Has anyone had any issues (mechanical or technical ) with their new 2022 or 23 frontier Pro ‘s? Hesitant to buy one. I also have a 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport Tan color, but yes ride quality sucks, lacks some features and transmission is underwhelming
The rear seats of both trucks are tight but the front seating of the Frontier feels roomier. I went truck shopping with wife and we both loved the space and feel of the front seats. Only reason I didn’t purchase it was the dealer markup, they wouldn’t budge and neither would I so we walked away.
It better complete, as its been 6 years since the 3rd gen Tacoma released. Toyota is already releasing a newly redesigned Tacoma in 2024. Nissan basically took a lot of the Tacomas design and put their spin on it. The new 2024 Tacoma is going to be killer with the appeal of the new Tundra. I absolutely love the Tacoma and I feel the new Frontier is killer looking as well, but I'd take the Tacoma all day for every category. You really can't go wrong with one. . . I rather Nissan light some fire under Toyota to get them to take more risk.
I'm on the market for 2025. I love the Frontier styling but I'm wondering if they are getting a refresh then? And I'm extremely curious to see what Nissan does for the engine with all the turbo 4's out there
My pro x is good, but less than a yr old with 6500mi, recall for parking pawl already in and my back up camera went out. Screen does not change when put in Rev. Turns out the video controller card is bad, new one needs to be ordered. Just an FYI
I really wish Nissan put some better tires on it, and leveled it out. The "Fake your MPG" stance really hampers it offroad. I traded in my 2012 Xterra Pro-4x for a 2022 Frontier Pro-4x. The Xterra was completely stock except for the KO2's and I never had an issue going anywhere I wanted in the back country. While it's really nice taking a modern truck off the beaten path, and the trail cam is a fender saver, it is handicapped by a couple of simple fixes. And I understand they wanted to keep the price as low as they could, and serious overlanders were going to mod it out anyway. So then for my location and needs, 2.5 inch lift and some 33's will make it a legit Norcal boondocker.
I noticed the rough country website that the kit you used said that it doesn’t fit the pro-4x, did you guys have to modify the kit at all or does it actually fit fine?
"Oooo! A new Frontier! I'm going to have to check this out!" ... I dig those things. .... BUT! I'm only a couple seconds in and you went and did it... "You People!" Always say it, and i find REALLY freaking irritating... "go off roading, which maybe not technically off roading." ... WTF!! The footage when you said that looked pretty off road to me! Not everyone is a Rock Crawler. Rock Crawling is not off roading. It's in a league all its own. Us off roaders are like Rock and Rollers ... Rock Crawling is Metal! I hate how Rock Crawling has taken over, and nothing else is off road. Some of us are content exploring and coming across things such as this point in the video (0:37). Not everyone is trailering their rig, or going straight for a Rock garden. Yup, super cool. But it's not off roading ... it's Rock Crawling. I always read it on forums when someone shows anything other then Rock crawling, yahoo's always saying, "THATS NOT OFF ROADING!!" Yes it is! Okay, driving down a gravel driveway, or going up a "trail" to take pics of your truck ... that is somehow Shiney in the photos, if you were actually wheeling ... then go home after. Okay, I agree with you there.... okay, rant over. I'll go watch, maybe you'll redeem yourself.
Quick question. You said you have his lift on your website but when I checked it says that it will not fit the pro-4x??? Just want to make sure I'm not about to waste $200 before I order the RC 2.5" lift.
I would maybe check some real life testaments from people online. Looking at some right now and it does appear they do have some issues but it can be resolved fairly easy!
