ABOUT THIS VIDEO
If you're in the market for minimalist style barefoot shoes, you have heard of Lems and Vivobarefoot. Their popular barefoot style sneakers are the Primus Lites and the Primal 2s. In this video, Matt discusses which barefoot sneakers are better and for what situations. He explains why you would buy Lems over Vivobarefoot and why you might want to buy Vivobarefoot Primus Lites instead of Lems Primal 2s.

Which of these barefoot shoes seems like the best fit for you? What are you going to use them for?

Got the Primal 2's recently (Love the Waterproof Boulder Boot and Boat shoe). Definitely noticed that rounded heel cup. I have very wide feet and can feel that rounded outsole up through the forefoot as well. Like you were saying though, I just kinda got over it. Doesn't really seem to affect much. I often wear Xero shoe 4mm DIY sandals, so the Lem's feel really cushioned and block some ground feel.

I swore off Vivo Barefoot as a company a couple of years ago when they stopped making the one shoe that worked for me and it seemed quality control had really slipped; they didn't even respond to my concerns. I could only use their trail soles because I live in London and like you said, their everyday shoes (the bulk of their line) just lack the cushioning you need when pounding asphalt/concrete...

Finally a barefoot shoe review that doesn't go on about the benefits of going barefoot, talking about a wide toe box, and the zero drop heel. Yes, we know, that's why we are here. Other channels need to make just one video for the barefoot shoes benefits. And this is very in depth, talking about the fit around your ankle and rocks entering is a big point. thanks! Do you find yourself noticing the reduced flexibility at the toes in the Vivo shoes? It doesn't seem like it would be a big deal.

Great detail mate! Thanks. Regarding price, here in UK the lems are pricey too. There's only really one online shop selling them too. It's a shame, I think they'd do really well here if they were more available. The most available barefoot shoes here are vivo and merrell

Best thing I ever did to my Primus FGs is swap out the laces (they come with traditional replacements, but I used a set from a pair of Merrell's I wasn't wearing). World of difference. I'm very familiar with the fiddliness of the Vivo system and swapping them completely changed them for me. So much better.

The Lems workout pretty well and I spend a lot of time on hot concrete. If your worried about getting hot, it’s really not of a problem in my opinion.

1. If you're feet feel suffocated when wearing vivo shoes because you end up tying them to tight, play around with the shoe laces pattern. Maybe the way the shoelaces come out of the box doesn't work. I always buy much thinner laces and change the pattern slightly because my feel would go numb and it has worked. 2. The reason the lace's tightness goes away after a while is because the front end of the shoe laces, what's closer to your toes, is not tighten before making the knots. In not pulling the lace's throughly to make them feel fitted, extra lacing is being left which will travel up undoing any tightness made from the opposite end. 3. Pebbles get in the shoes because again the shoe isn't tied to tightly as seen from the video. I've ran hundreds of miles on loose terrain and never that I remember had an issue with rocks getting in. These are just opinions. Don't want to argue with anyone. Love the review though. I might consider getting the primal 2 when I wear a hole on my Primus Trail.

about to order my second set of Primal 2's. Didn't really wear them a lot in the beginning but started driving OTR for 10 hrs at a time and found they were PERFECT driving shoes. I lave them up like most of my shoes/work boots with 1/8" shockcord and a spring stop toggle stopper. I did put a diff insole in at the end of the life of the shoe and am considering using a superfeet insole on the new pair but not sure how that might work with flexibility. And I like the way the fabric looks kinda 3D when they get worn down over time. It is tough to really say anything about the outersole because if it was more ridgid it wouldn't flex as much. Anyways glad I found your channel. Hope you & your family are doing ok during the pandemic!!

He’s a stand up guy and in my opinion he wouldn’t BS a viewer for any personal gain(a rarity these days).I have yet to buy ANY zero drop,minimalistic,barefoot or whatever shoes but I can say loyalty is HUGE for me and if possible I will buy from a company that also allows Matt to ‘gain’ in some way from it. I have worn flat sandals and Vans and deck shoes all my life being from Florida. My feet are and have always been my strength in sports and life. If you like flat and zero drops try Kino sandals made ONLY in Key West Florida before your eyes while you wait

Update on my last comment: Got my Lems Primal 2's. They are night and day compared to the Vivobarefoot Primus Lites. The Lems are soooo comfy, you can walk on concrete without any issues. I can carry my kids on stoney ground. The Vivos caused nasty bruising to my heels so I was forced to walk in this weird landing on the balls of my feet gait - they were truley the worst shoes I have ever worn. Everyone's different and Vivo do a 100 day return policy - must be a lot of shoes going back because they have a used shoes site also. Namaste x

Thanks, nice video and comparison, my 2 cents would be that these are 2 different pairs and that's mainly because of the thickness of the sole, Lems is not really a barefoot shoe, note how you said you tend to slam your heel down harder in Lems, that's because of 10mm stack height, there isn't enough feedback and feel of the ground. That's why vivos don't make anything over 4 mm (plus the lugs sg and fg). So if the barefoot feel it's what one looks for it's vivos every time. If more a conventional trainer with spacious toe box - Lems.

In future reviews could you speak to the differences in toe box shape ( room) and also sizing. Do they tend to fit your normal size or did you have to size up or down? And sizing based on if you wear a sock or do not. And o really width of shoes. I do find Vivobarefoot fit a bit more narrow in general..and from what I've heard..Lems ( especially the primal) fits wider. Thank you.

The Lems have a wobbly heel and the entire lower seems to have an axis that it wobbles around. The toes also curve upward. The new Primal 3 seems to have tried to fix the wobble, but I have t tried them. I wore Primal 2 for over a year, but I’ve retired them and gotten Vivo instead.

Thank you for this review it was ver,y helpful. I just bought the Primus lite ( women's) and because we have had an unusually cold Spring ( in BC! Canada). I did have to wear socks with my Primus which I did not want to. I will eventually be purchasing the Lems shoe just for this time of year when I don't want to wear boots ( an dit would look funny as the snow has been all gone for quite some time) but it's still a little too cold for the Primus to wear without socks and even with thin socks on a couple of days. It sounds like the Lems shoes would be the perfect in between shoe. And it would also be good in the fall when it starts to get colder. If I get them, I'll definitely use your link. Thanks for also 'staying at home'.

I got my Primal 2s in 2014. The end of summer last year they finally started to fall apart (sole separation, hole in upper at end of pinky toe). The outsoles are still in great condition. I like them. They do have a couple characteristics to consider. They soak up water and do not dry quickly at all. If you get them wet today, they'll probably still be damp tomorrow. They do get hot, but mine are black so that doesn't help. Otherwise, I think they're a very good shoe. Keep them dry.

Hi. I recently switched over to minamalist shoes. I am wearing Xero prio. I know that this has nothing to do with the shoes your reviewing in the video or may not. I am have begun to experience pain under the heel . . . Dont know if this could be a heel spur especially on my left foot. It hurts to walk on it. I dont ever remember experiencing this any other show. I first tried to wear the shoes without the removable thinner cushioning soles for extra barefoot feeling but got pain. Eventually it came back even after I put the removable thinner soles back in the shoes. Also I have been experiencing foot issues especially in my ankles for years now. I often easily get sore or in pain after being active on my feet. In my ankle especially. Foot doctors haven't been much help. Any advice? particularly with the under the heel pain which has been happening more after switching to minimalist footwear especially on my left foot. Is this cause my feet hasn't fully adopted to the shoes as I suspect. Btw i walk or stand on concrete surfaces at work. Xero prio.

I have 3 pairs of Primal 2 and they are the best shoes I have owned. My Brooks Ghost 14 and New Balance 880 V11 are both now in storage !!! My Brooks and New Balance are 4E width so that illustrates the Primal 2 are fine for wide feet. They are also tops for narrower feet as they sort of wrap around. My only complaint (and this applies to most shoes) is when you take the insole out the stitching is exposed and I don't like that. I don't think the Vivobarefoot has that problem or do the Freet barefoot shoes.
@christianlangfield9303
@christianlangfield9303 4 года назад
Hi Matt, nice detailed review thanks and you seem to have a similar attention to detail as me (which seems quite rare as I notice things that most people seem to overlook or not mention). I agree that the heel on the Lems doesn't feel completely natural due to it being quite rigid and rounded, I think that Vivo have one of the most natural feeling soles amongst barefoot shoe manufacturers. I also found that the Primus Lite is too plasticky, I returned them because the plastic part of the upper (at the bottom of the lacing area) when flexed digs into the top of my foot near the big toe, especially as the mesh is so soft there. I had the same problem with the Primus Trail, I returned them for the same reason. I don't like how some of the Vivo shoes are cheap recycled plastic but the shoes cost a premium price. I much prefer their non-vegan leather shoes where the price justifies the quality and I'm not paying $$$ for plastic shoes. I prefer the Vivo Stealth II which has a much nicer mesh upper, the only plastic part is the toe bumper and the heel cage. The mesh is thicker than the Primus Lite so not quite as breathable. One other key difference I've found with Vivo vs Lems is that the Primal 2 works a lot better when wearing Correct Toes, because the forefoot is a bit wider and also stretches better (the plastic on the Vivo Primus doesn't stretch of course) and also the vertical height of the Lems is bigger. Since the Lems is designed to be worn with an insole then there's more height but I think that Vivo shoes have internal volume for wearing without insoles, so if you put the insoles in (for a more forgiving experience when walking on concrete) then the volume is way too snug and it feels cramped (toes have little to no room to wiggle a bit up and down inside the shoe). Without the insole it's not too bad, but still not quite enough to wear Correct Toes comfortably.

I've been wearing Vivobarefoot as a picker at Amazon which has been leaving my feet sore by the end of the week, so I was hoping to find something just like Vivobarefoot but thicker. I thought the primal 2 would do the trick, and I loved the way they look, so I pulled the trigger and bought some during the black Friday sale. I have to say I am extremely disappointed so far, they are a completely different walking experience from Vivobarefoot, which I can feel putting stress on my knees and different leg muscles. It also has annoying pressure points, ESPECIALLY that freaking heel cup you mentioned in the beginning of the video. However due to the extra thickness my feet aren't sore anymore, so that's a plus :/ Do all Lems feel the same way as the primal 2? If not I might give the chukka a try. I'm also considering trying topo athletic st-3 and Altra escalante 2.5.

Whenever you are putting strain on your body, there will be some pain and adjustment. So you have to ask yourself, do you want that strain on your feet, or your knees? Personally I prefer on my feet. Feet are a muscle that will get stronger. Knees are a joint that will wear out and leave you brittle, not stronger. I prefer vivobarefoot. To me, I embrace the sensation of working the muscles in my calves and feet than grinding away at my knees and back.

Thanks, nice video and comparison, my 2 cents would be that these are 2 different pairs and that's mainly because of the thickness of the sole, lens is not really a barefoot shoe, note how you said you tend to slam your heel down harder n Lems, that's because of 10mm stack height, there isn't enough feedback and feel of the ground. That's why vivos don't make anything over 4 mm (plus the lugs sg and fg). So if the barefoot feel it's what one looks for it's vivos every time. If more a conventional trainer with spacious toe box - Lems.

The original Vibram 5 fingers has an identical heel shape as the Lems, only with a thinner 2mm sole. There is a reason the Lems don`t need updating every year, worn without socks and insole, they are `as it says on the tin`, primal !

Maybe try merino wool? (smartwool, darn tough, etc.) Pretty soft and breathable, and they have a range of thicknesses for different climates, all the way up to Minnesota Cold. (edit: Falke makes some nice wool socks too :)

Regarding shoes I'd like to see a review on, could you try getting hold of some Leguano Active and also Freet Tanga. Those both look to be somewhere in between the Vivo Primus Lite and Lems Primal 2 in terms of minimal and breathable. They're both European though so maybe not as easy to get hold of.

@@LawOfAttraction-ed2mx Hi, I've already got the Freet Mudee and Nomad which I like for their intended purpose, now I'm wanting more of an everyday shoe similar to the Lems Primal but more minimal and breathable and the Tanga looks to have a nice soft breathable knit upper. I'll probably order them to try. I live in the UK so get free delivery and returns.

Thank you for your reply. So all of them feel barefoot, you are just looking for upgrade to more classy instead of sporty? They are having great prices... i lived in london for 11 years, i worked in a bank while, it would make such a huge difference to wear good shoes... i stopped with heals completely... i believe woman can look well in flats
@christianlangfield9303
@christianlangfield9303 4 года назад
Yes the Freet shoes feel very natural because they're wide, flat and have a thin sole. The Mudee are hiking boots and the Nomad are hiking sandals, I'm wanting an everyday shoe. I already have some everyday minimal shoes from other brands like Vivobarefoot but it's nice to have a few different styles. I agree that women can look just as good in flat shoes, and more importantly your feet will look much nicer too (no bunions, squished toes etc.)

Hey mate, your laces come undone because you are tying an asymetrical "granny knot" instead of a proper squat or reef knot. It seems silly but i relearned how to tie my laces at 30 years old, 5 years ago and my laces never come undone. Look up the "Ian's secure knot" here on youtube. At first it may take slightly longer to tie but you will get quicker and is much easier to untie than a "double" knot.

@@husk27-27 Thank you, Husk! I need something with leather or a non-permeable upper so biological nasties can't get through. I bought a pair of Lems Nine2Five that I am returning because their size chart is way out in left field; they were huge on me and I used the exact formula they recommend to get the right size. They don't do free exchanges and their customer service leaves a lot to be desired so I'm not going to buy from them again. I then bought a pair of Xero's new "Prio All Days" which are leather and I have to exchange them to get something just slightly larger and wider, but I think they are promising and the bottoms looked pretty slip-resistant!
