Loved the tone of this video. Friendly and informative and not pushing products or courses. This is how RU-vid used to be. Wonderful to see. It’s really great to see the information effortlessly flow and delivered with real charm honesty and by someone who is clearly experienced and thoughtful about their process. The envato link was great not least that this resource is insanely useful and often under appreciated. Another great shout with the cos 11. Very bright and good under clothing for that reason as it survives being buried or have a softie on it. For less run around filming and more interview controlled settings the Dpa Lavs are maybe the fullest sounding and worth investing in if a shotgun isn’t going to be used too. Again great to see a 416 lurking. As more and more people are wearing hybrid fabrics like goretex and viscose nylons ala lux sports lav mics can seem a high risk strategy for many scenarios. Nothing much can be done re fabric rubbing so definitely worth using a cos and some soft baffling to help with those rubbing fabric sounds. Nothing better though than a shotgun. I’m sure there is a reason to be using mirrorless for this piece (not sure if RU-vid’s shooting youtubers is meant to be ironic) but looking at the complicated and ungainly set up compared to an fx6 or better still an fx9 on the shoulder which mr bone is almost certainly expert with, really drew attention to the biggest reason not to use mirrorless cameras built out. That said this was an impeccably delivered journey into how that challenge kind of has to be met. Once you accept the need for a monitor that is bigger than the camera to do something functionally essential like getting focus then we are approaching that event horizon that should make us wonder why we aren’t using a camera specifically designed for shooting. Even more so when it comes to audio. By the end of the build these cameras look kind of ridiculous Frankenrigs despite the expert efforts shown here. For sure having a screw driver to hand is pretty much par for the course and I can see why that tool was a lifesaver. Great tip.Imo mirrorless shooting only really comes into its own for b roll where a monitor can be mounted effortlessly on the top of the camera. I still don’t know why I never see cameras with straps or resting on bags for stabilisation. Maybe cine saddle’s seem like an anachronism now but there are so many ways to get amazing hand held footage with a little bit of movement if the camera can rest on something and especially not be held out in front of the operator in mid air. Meanwhile this was a fantastic video that shows the challenges for anyone trying a dslr professionally. For so many reasons an fx6 is the right design and rather than an fx30 I would be interested to know what mr bones thoughts might be for a s35 fx6 body with fx30 specs. In the same way canon supported videographers with the c100 and c200 it would be great to see the design of the fx6 at a lower price point for those who actually want an integrated system to shoot doc style work with integrated sound and video tools. Just a thought. Thanks again for an outstanding video and invaluable insight delivered with real charm and care. The best of RU-vid.

Im always filming 4 separate audio channels with my K3M on the A7Siii. Found that setup to be a bit more smaller package since the k3m is on top of the a7siii and not forward about 4 inches. Really makes a difference when it comes to travel with the setup since i NEVER have to break it down. Happy filming

@@jasielm5258 I'm curious to ask, Do you know the pros and con to using the top handle K3M XLR on an A7s3 vs. Fx3 w/ top handle? I've been meaning to get into docs/ travel, but I also love the option of taking photos, and I'm wondering if the former setup is the best of all worlds.
@jasielm5258
@jasielm5258 Год назад
@@kereyvproductions5521 same setup but the layout is different. K3M from FX3 will send your shotgun mic 6 inches forward from where the MI hot shoe is while OG K3M keeps it closer to the body. For instance my setup with K3M is the sigma 24-70 and my K3M mic wont pass the 24-70 making it easier to store in its complete build rig since it’s basically a perfect cube from side to side but on the FX3 handle you got lots of mic hanging in front of the lens. Makes it easier for things to brake. Been using K3M close to 2 years. No issues. I use the smallrig handle made specifically for K3M

Hey Mark, so I recently sold an FX3 (bought another FX6) and the young guy from Boston… He was showing me his work on his mobile phone and I was telling him that he had serious potential looking at his creativity with only an A6500 and I said keep studying “story” - write every day, and also to find inspiration… He said, “Do you know Mark Bone?” I began to smile and replied, “Not personally, but your on the right path…” We went on to talk about your film school AOD and he talked about wanting to take part in your next round of classes but he had just bought the FX3 which I sold him for cheap (didn’t have an hour of video on it) and that had taken him a year to save up… Look I know that the AOD is incredibly reasonable and in no way am I suggesting otherwise but is there any way (if you aren’t already) you can do a “scholarship” program where maybe (1) student per season is given a free ride? Maybe base it on a film/ video contest… Or maybe a sponsorship program where someone can pay the way of a young student with financial hardships? I would be willing to offer half of the funding toward a full tuition payment (during the early sign up phase) Let me just add I am NOT financially well off in any way, however I’ve been there with 100k in film school loans (I WISH AOD WAS AROUND BEFORE I attended and GRADUATED EMERSON COLLEGE) with NO MONEY to actually make films… Although I did love the school and the “college experience” it can all get SUPER expensive but your program has MORE TO OFFER FILMMAKERS in terms of actual filmmaking than most… YOU ACTUALLY WALK AWAY WITH YOUR OWN FILM/ plus reel… Sorry if I’m rambling I was inspired by this young man and when he mentioned you…😊❤️

Great tips ! I am using more or less the same gear, but I found that the combo Sanken COS11D + AVX was not great. hey Mark, I already know everything about handheld, having fiddled with it for years, so I already have your setup. Still, I clicked in anyway cause I was bored and this is one of the most comprehensive hand held videos I have ever seen. For example not shooting handheld over 80mill is such a logic but important to bake in knowledge. Cheers. The only thing where I deviate slightly is the tentacle sync sound. For 90 percent of handheld I am not listening to or following people, so I do not use time code synced audio, and if I do, I have a wireless lavalier straight into camera so right now I don't see why I would need multiple audio tracks. I know it would be nice to have but it get's quite expensive and I would buy (if I was buying into the gear) other things first like a good tripod or audio recorder which will last forever and can be used with sit-down interviews:)

Top Handle... must have a Top handle... I gotta say this is true only to pull the camera out of the bag... After that Never Shoot while holding the top handle its the very best way to ruin your shots with shake and jitter... but alas there are good stabilization tools... to fix all the shots that are done with a top handle... Love your videos and information but this one deserves an entire reconsideration. Been operating cameras for 30 years and top handle shooting is very very rare... Now when you are ready, I'd love to discuss with you the WHY and the HOW of the real reason people Love to suggest using top handle, and it has nothing to do with getting great stable effective shots...

All I can say is that top handles have been an integral part of all my cinematography. Perhaps we want to discuss on an Art of Documentary call if you’re a part of our community

Another awesome video! I would love to hear a deeper dive on why not use the 3.5mm jack. If my camera doesnt have a XLR input, the external recorder audio will be better then sending directely to my camera?

Apparently the SmallHD Action 5 got discontinued, and now smallHD's minimum price for thier products is 1200. So a bit of a jump from the fairly affordable monitor price the Action 5 maintained, but thtats life I guess.

Thanks for your insights on this one. Do you have a deadcat for the deity s-mic 2s as well or are you satisfied with the foam it comes with?

Mark, I was super disappointed with the Action 5 after upgrading from the Focus 4 (which I loved and used for years). I finally settled after trying a few others on the Shinobi 7 (which seems to also have some drawbacks as well). I'd love if small HD had something between the action and their $1200+ monitors.

Love the video Mark! It’s been a while 😅😆 I would love your opinion on the Anton Bauer Titon Base for the FX3/30. I think it adds a bit more weight for handheld scenarios, and you can power the monitor via p-tap as well as the camera via Usb-C/p-tap.

I’ve never used that setup but anytime you can make a camera heavier (under 10-15lbs) it’ll help your handheld!

Informative video as always ! I'm now deciding on either getting an FX30 with a 24-105mm lens or an FX3 and use my currents lenses (24-70mm and 35mm)

Mark is my favourite RU-vid (and he’s a fantastic filmmaker) I often study his work to help develop my own. I find less micro-jitters with a mirrorless camera. They have built in IBIS v a cinema camera which doesn’t. Unless the lens is stabilised (which the 24-105 is (it’s used in this video) Mark; will there be a film which you shot in Hawaii? Killing it as always.

Hey Mark, Thanks for the helpful video. I'm wondering if you've ever used something like the SeeMo to turn your iPhone into a monitor and how that would compare to your SmallHD one?

Why get away from using the camera's audio jack. I'm new to all this and that is the route I was going; microphone with own power and the camera;s audio jack. Now that i hear your advice I don't know that's the route I want to go now.
