When I was younger, I worked for a company that was hired by banks to clean out foreclosed/abandoned houses. Long story short, while cleaning out a house I came across an old looking fender jazz bass. It was in pretty decent condition considering it was sitting in a basement for who knows how long. Took it to a guitar shop near by and the guy couldn't believe it, an intact 1968 fender jazz with original hardware. I had it for years before trading it, but I'll always remember how well it played despite being 40 years old. Point of the story is: you know that old guitar or instrument you found in your grandparents attic? Don't throw it away!!!!! lol

I got tired of hauling it around wherever I moved & sold it for $500 around 1976. Thought I was doing good selling this old guitar for what it cost. Fast forward 30 years. Working out of town I decided to get a guitar just to keep busy. Didn't like hanging out at the bar every night. Searching the internet I looked it up. I could get on for $13,000 in 2002.

An interesting thing about this guitar is it has what are called "Mickey Mouse" ears (the cutaways at the neck). They were the second version of the cutaways on the 335 after a short run in 1958 where they looked more like 1966, then came these. The problem is they were discontinued in 1963 so this guitar is probably older than a 1964. Look of photos of Clapton's '64 then look at this one. But hey, stranger things have happened.

@@donwheeler1208 WRONG. There have been many different descriptions over the years of what this "burst" color is, was, and now called. To include: Vintage burst, tobacco burst, or tri-burst, because there was a third tangerine like color in between the lemon drop and the very dark brown color. Quite often, the original sunburst Les Paul's pigment would fade in infrared sunlight. They would go through a chemical process as they faded. Certain aspects if the pigment would fade before others, resulting in a dark brown burst. Eventually, all of the pigment would fade away, leaving only the yellow, becoming a "lemon drop". The original sales text describes the burst as simply "burst" or "tri-burst". All of the later terms were just word of mouth terms made up by salesmen at pawn shops, music shops, and collectors.

The thing that annoys me about Antiques Road Show is they often tell the person the retail value of an item. The person will never get anywhere near that much if they wanted to sell it because "retail value" takes into consideration the seller's markup which is usually 50%+. The ES-335 did not originally have P-90’s, it was introduced with PAF’s. PAF’s were slowly phased out with Patent Number pickups over the course of several years. The appraiser isn't a true guitar appraiser, so he doesn't truly understand all of the specific selling points of a guitar like this. SPECIFICALLY: 1. Original case, complete with what is known as "case candy" like the manual, receipt, and truss rod adjustment tool. 2. All original parts on the guitar. Quite often, guitars will get new pickups, truss rod cover, tuning knobs, pick guard, pickup surrounds, the poker chip at the selection switch, tuning keys, ABR bridge, and saddle nut. 3. After years of playing the finish might have been redone. If it is original, this is a selling point. 4. If the wiring inside the guitar is original, this is a selling point to collectors. 5. An appraiser of guitars must allways show the serial number and point out when and where the guitar was manufactured. 6. Last, but not least, dings, dents, scratches, or repairs. 7. Depending upon having everything I have just mentioned, the case, the condition, or who owned the guitar, this guitar would be worth $20,000-$40,000.

I know it sounds minor but actually is a little different, in those 5 years the neck has narrowed, the pickups have changed and the stop bar or bigsby has gone and usually a trapeze Bridge is fitted. The value difference in a ‘64 and ‘69 tells you they’re changes that people didn’t like!

Alvin Lee, Steve Howe, Larry Carlton... Eric Clapton has used almost everything but in that day was mostly associated with the SG. My point is that everyone who wants to label anything as "iconic" finds a picture of Eric Clapton as did the person who claimed that Jimi Hendrix and E.C. revived the Strat in the early 70s.

That is a beauty, lets hope the dude does'nt part with it, the Sunburst is spot-on. I thought the 335 had a laminated maple top and back with mohagany sides and not the "Body made of Maple" ? Anyway too cheap a quote, a similar new version put through C Shop and Murphy is almost 9K anyway.

The “appraiser” is out of his freakin’ mind. That’s a 25K guitar, if it’s a dime...Unless the headstock has been broken, it’s near mint. Also, the reason myself and many others play the 335 is because of Alvin Lee...
@guitarsounduk
@guitarsounduk 4 года назад
O.P. Yates I know they’re advertised for $25k so you’re quite right in making the point but do you know anyone who has actually bought one for that money? Everyone I know that owns old guitars all got them before the prices went crazy! I sold a ‘65 es-345 (early so all ‘64 spec) 2 years ago for $7k. It wasn’t as clean as this one but it took me a year to find a buyer. Where are all these fellas with $25k burning a hole in their pocket? 🤔
@OPYates
@OPYates 4 года назад
Carl, I would’ve put it up for sale thru a dealer or broker...Pay 10-15%, but get 3-4x the amount...
@guitarsounduk
@guitarsounduk 4 года назад
O.P. Yates I am a dealer! Have been for 20 years. Can do part ex, 0% finance etc and still not so easy! Dealers can’t get 3x4 times the amount, lucky to get 15% more in my experience. The point is we all think these guitars achieve the Reverb list prices but the reality is they most often don’t. A mate of mine watched Joe Bonamassa haggle for a ‘61 es-335 in a shop on south coast of England two years ago, they wanted £15k (ticket price), he wouldn’t pay more then £11k for it ($14k) and they gave in and sold it to him as they to realise there just aren’t guys regularly around who will get £15k out their pockets. That’s a 2 x paf guitar, 1 owner, mint and it takes Joe Bonamassa offering £11k to see it sell. I wonder if you owned the guitar in this vid and wanted to sell it in say 3 months what you’d actually get for it, I think you’d find it harder then you’d expect. Just my two pence worth mind. 👍
@OPYates
@OPYates 4 года назад
Carl, you’re probably right...I only own a. ‘66 That I modified by installing a stop tailpiece, and adding a Strat pickup between the humbuckers, with its own vol. knob. Basically I did the Alvin Lee mod to it. I’ll never sell it, and I’ve turned down 15 grand for it...The vintage market has bottomed out, and people like BonerMaster have cheapened it for everyone...

They used the same exact pickups in 64 as the PAF of the 57’s first put in Les Pauls. The manufacturing was identical. PAF was imprinted on a sticker on the pickup that meant Patent Applied For. When the patent was granted they stopped putting that sticker on.
@alisonnelson161
@alisonnelson161 2 года назад
No, they were almost identical but not exactly. "Gibson began use of the PAF on higher-model guitars in late 1956 and stopped in late 1962. They were replaced by the Patent Number (Pat No) pickup, essentially a refined version of the PAF" from wikipedia

In 1964 there had been quite a few changes from the ones made in 1957, most notably the magnets. The winding wire is also a little different.

@@andrewptob I agree 100%....that Gibson is in great condition, and by 2020 standards it should easily fetch $25,000.....then again, there are some really rich folk, that purchase old "Quality Musical Instruments" as a type of investment. People did that more-so back in the 70s & 80s....if say someone could have purchased that for $700-$1,000 back then, and hung onto it, today that guitar would give a fairly nice return. My heart sinks everytime I think of me selling my 1966 Guild Starfire for $600 back in 1974....siiiggghhh!

the book value on these guitars of that vintage is anywhere between 7,000 - 12,000 I actually found his estimate a little high, from what I saw of the condition I'd put it around 9 - 10,000.

Best way to kill an appraisal: name something else no one on ARS will ever have, worth 800k. Then no matter what you say this item is worth, it’s woh woh. This came across like a guy auditioning to do ARS, and they would reply “Thank you. Maybe try again next year.”
