Back in the 80’s bikes usually came with full length mud guards and most owners would shorten them or buy aftermarket shorted guards for the look. Now bikes come with short guards, we want to make them longer!
One the reasons my Speed Twin went back..a beautiful rear mudguard, that wasn't a mudguard at all. only thing that worked was taking the missus on the back to keep the mud off me.
Well, thanks to videos like yours I have now after 47 years on this earth have taken and passed my bike test, so just ordered an F850 GS ADVENTURE to have for a couple of years before the big girl. Thank you for your videos that made me want to ride: -)
I have the genuine mudsling on my 1250 GS, which I took off my 1200 and it does a decent job of protecting the rear shock. When I got my 1250 I bought a copy of the front fender extender off ebay for less than £9 as opposed for over £50 for the genuine one. It was a similar picture with the hand guard extenders from another well know manufactuer. Personally I'm dissapointed certain accessory manufacturers keep charging silly money for what are bits of plastic, I know there'sdesign and production set up costs but come on chaps stop ripping us off. Before I'm flamed too much I did buy the X head cylinder protectors which are very good. My point is the GS is the best selling large bike on the planet so it's time they priced their products realistically IMO. I agree they are needed though Bruce and maybe BMW should be doing more too to protect their bikes straight off the production line.
I don't know why I enjoyed this video so much, I did this very install on my neighbours new-to-him '16 GS last week... And now I keep catching myself looking at GS's on ebay... We went for a ride and at no point did my Z1000sx outgun the GS on these slippery December roads, quite the opposite, he was very comfortable and composed on the GS while I was getting pinged off the seat by potholes.
I used calimoto for the first time last week, I'm blown away, it's a fantastic bit of kit! Did Boston to Sheffield on roads I never knew existed and I do over 100,000 miles a year, brilliant tip, thank you.
Absolutely the best parts to fit to your new GS Bruce as they stop any mud and dirt getting into difficult places to clean later, as well as the paint protection which you have already completed the only remaining after market accessory which I would suggest thing left to fit would be the Wunderlich engine bar protectors which clip on to the engine bars.
Had both the Mudsling and Fender Extender on mine for over 5 years. They've done exactly what they say on the tin, along with a R&G 'shock sock' on my front spring they've protected it from all sorts of crud. Brilliant bit's of kit, yes pricey but well worth it.
The fender extender is vital. And a glaring omission by BMW. I'm not convinced by the mudsling. the shock doesn't get any direct cack from the rear wheel. The main problem with the shock is trying to get access to clean it.
these for me probably the two best value things I've fitted to my ((black wheeled...no spoke stain...) R1250GS Rallye) in terms of cost/payback of usefulness, ease of fit. dry bum, dry feet. result. Other 'Best Buy' were the wider hand guards/shields from Nippy's. Keeps the rain and cold off the hands (here in Scotland...)
My biggest bugbear with modern bikes is inadequate mudguards just paying lip service to their function... I hear the "well it would make the bikes dearer if they were larger" argument all the time and it gives the aftermarket a purpose. If the manufacturer fitted full size capable mudguards as standard then the aftermarket could supply crappy cut down vajjazzled jobs! Glad I am not alone in my priorites Bruce, getting covered in road crap should be a choice not a given lol 👍🖖
Great mods these and deffo agree, the mudsling has to be the easiest to fit after market addition ever.......also the Givi hand guards and wunderlich bar risers are also very good in deed.......
just getting a new GS so searched for fender extenders and huggers, as you say put BMW in front of it and it gives a licence to print money, as if the bikes not expensive enough !!found identical looking items to what you've fitted for under £50 the pair!!! I know they might not be of such good quality but they only keep the muck off!
Cheers Bruce, totally agree with your comments on accessories having fitted the same or similar bits to my 1200 GS LC . Stay safe brother and keep the vids coming
A nice looking, thought out and easy to fit couple of bits of protective gear for your investment there. I was toying with idea of fender extender for Z800 to protect pipes, it's now back in my mind. Cheers Bruce.
Loving these. Would like to watch/listen to the podcasts, but just don’t have time, these are ideal, I normally look at stuff up to about 30 minutes, 20 minutes is ideal for me. Besides which, I have the attention span of a goldfish 👍
You're a legend. I feel a tad connected as I too serve HM albeit in different uniform. Respect your decision to hang up your kit. Now down to serious stuff! STOP showing my your GS. I test rode a 1250 adventure after watching your videos...... now looking for a buyer for my "above milesge for age" liver so I can afford one..... from a fellow Scot below the border to another. Keep the vidros coming.
Fender extender is crucial but the mudsling I fitted and took off. I only fitted because of the hype. Yes, it kept the middle of the bike clean and free of road grime, but not the rider! I then fitted a Puig hugger (for GS) and it’s absolutely brilliant - no wet legs and backside when riding through torrential downpours. It may get clogged with mud if going properly off road, but I won’t be doing that, other than the odd unmade trail, so it’s perfect for my needs. The other item I wouldn’t be without, as it keeps the rear of the bike from being sprayed with water, is the rear crud catcher. Without it, at certain speeds (when wet), water is flung up the rear of the bike and actually reaches the rider’s back - must be a balance of forward speed and slipstream effect. The rear crud catcher eliminates this. I have had these three items fitted to each of my three successive GSAs.
2 bits of 4” guttering, hacksaw and a handful of self tappers - job sorted and all for £4.33 😂😂😂😂 canny Scotsman strikes again 😱. Loving the videos & content big fella 👍
New GS owner, and thought you made good case to order them, so i did. Also just had the supershield auto ceramic coating so my new GS TE triple black will be ready for the road this weekend
I've had both these on all my GSA's since 2014 and they are still perfect and they fit the new 1250 just as a bit of info for anyone with them on a 1200 👍👍 great video bud
Enjoying the GS series of ad ons. For balance it would be interesting to offer a comparison with cheap eBay imports. I’m sure Nippy Norman’s would like to convince GS owners that premium products are worth it. Asking for a friend 😉
Not got a GS, but same thing for my bike - fender and hugger extensions. Year round commuting in our beautiful British weather makes them a must. Spent bloody ages cleaning the crap out of the radiator and rear shock after the first winter on the bike. Not something I wanted to repeat 👎
Fender Extenders and Rad Guards are the first accessory i fit to a new bike. I do wonder why manufacturers leave the mudguards so short. I like this series, itll be handy when i manage to convince the Misses that a GS is a good idea.
Cheers Neil - honestly mate these two are first on my list with any GS I get. You can get much cheaper ones on eBay/amazon, but I always get the ones off Nippy Norman’s personally 👍
Aye I’m chuffed with the whole suit, best jacket and trousers I’ve ever worn for cold/wet riding. Still an insane amount of money but so far I’m very impressed with it 👍
Thanks for all the Great Info TP1 - BTW good name for the new bike "Heidi". Unfortunately BMW didn't have great color schemes for 2021. I settled on the Triple Black R1250 GS - 2021 model. Can't pick it up yet, waiting for the Front Brakes issue to be cleared up, I'm being told that probably late in February. I ordered my combo kit from "Machineartmoto" on this side of the pond. I've been accumulating all the must have bits and pieces so when I get my GS home, all the parts will be ready to go on the bike. I think that the 2021 Orange/Blue KTM Super Duke R would be a great stable mate for "Heidi"
Ha Ha, I’d LOVE a new Super Duke R - best road bike available at the moment for me, truly a superb bike. Financiers don’t allow another bike sadly, but I can dream eh! Enjoy the new bike bud 👏👍
Kin Nora they're expensive! That said, I fitted something similar to my Triumph and they made a massive difference. It always amazes me that manufacturers don't fit something like them as standard given the price of the bikes.
Aye but if a manufacturer fitted everything we wanted for our bikes as standard, there’d be no accessory industry would there, plus the price of the bikes would be even more expensive. Same with exhausts, most manufacturers just get the bike to meet emission standards and don’t worry about the look of the exhausts as they know a large percentage of us will change it anyway 🤷♂️👍
Agree with the additions, I also kept the Hugger in place for the extra protection and reckon it finishes the look for me, fits with no problems very slight bit of scuffing initially but settled in now, all good. Ride safe chap
I’m going for a bash plate that comes up the front of the engine just high enough to have the standard be lower than it, which is a relief because I think the front guard is a bit naff but as for everything else, yeah, I’m getting there but fair crack, I’ve only had the bike 5 days !
Thank you for posting. Great video. I have the front guard and it is a great addition. Will consider the rear mud guard. If you are looking for mods for your GS, you should consider an adjustable folding shift lever. Several companies sell them. Not sure if it is allowed to mention company names here, so I will refrain. I did not think I needed one, until I installed one. It makes an incredible difference on the ease of shifting (I have long/big feet). Specially, if you use boots while riding. Just my $0.02 worth, ymmv.
Cheers Simon, I’ve never felt the need for the adjustable shift lever tbh, except when standing up (as all good GS riders do on the way to Starbucks 😉😂) 👍
Sorry Bruce I beg to differ. But paying nearly £200 for two bits of plastic is an absolute ripoff. I bought my fender extension for the front guard from AliExpress and it cost me £18 free shipping. And I got a complete rear hugger for £37. If they did deteriorate over time it’s a small outlay to buy again. But it’s my second gsa I’ve had and neither time has the quality of these parts fallen into question. But for gods sake £200. Ridiculous prices. Great video as always. I’ve just put up my latest one. I know you are a subscriber of mine and a big thank you. I do get the whole you get what you pay for but plastic..... £200 nah and I’m not even Scottish or from Yorkshire. Lol. 👍🤗
Hi Bruce, I'm looking forward to seeing which crash bars you install. On my 2020 R1250GS Exclusive, I went with the black SW Motech upper and lower set.
This is the first vid. off your channel I've seen and liked it very much. Liked and subscribed. Been a GS owner for many years (R1100, R1150) but no longer. Age is catching up and I now found them too tall and too heavy. Today I ride a Duke ST3 which suits me very well. Cheers Dave
picking my GSA up in 12 days, already ordered both of these, also taller screen and stabiliser, going for the paint protection if i can get it home in the dry
@@teapotone i will be giving Pete call when the bike is with me, does he come to me Bruce as Local or do i go to him, with regards to removing exhaust etc
He normally comes to you but obviously depends where you are in the UK. Give me a call and he’ll sort you out, remember to mention TeapotOne for 10% off 😉👍
Another great video TeapotOne. I have a 2018 R1200GS bought from new with an unknown fitted Mudslinger, just noticed it has been rubbing against the swinging arm. I am now waiting for my new GSA to arrive and was wondering if you have experienced rubbing with the mudslinger you have fitted?
I enjoyed the installation of your new parts and I will now go and buy some, they look fantastic. However I won't be buying them from NN I have very bad dealings with them.
Being flippant about the instructions but they're right on hand just a second later :) Both mods are very handy for keeping the bike a lot easier to keep clean. Fine as a series, missing some riding content on the new bike though
Hi Brice, just going back to your last vid when you say the new 1200 tiger's are not very good and boring but when I watched the vid when you first got a 1200 tiger you said they were the excellent and had buy one ! Do I buy one or not 🤔
That first tiger vid is from 2015 Glyn?! I thought it was fantastic when I first rode it, in fact I loved it right up until the engine blew up and then I had problem after problem with it. That’s when I tried the GS for the first time and fell in love. The new Tiger 1200 is good, but it’s now where near as athletic as the GS, GT or Multistrada’s. It’s probably the smoothest out the lot and is a very planted ride. Your best bet is just take one for a test ride and see if you like it 👍
Have you got a headlight protector? If not that is a must as you don’t want to be paying for one of them, especially if you just replaced the headlight 😢
I agree these are useful, but may I just say the price of these is crazy, £200 for two pieces of black plastic, for me it’s beyond ridiculous bordering ripoff.
I use the Mudsling, but didn't bother with the front as affects ground clearance off-road. Am guessing your bike will be staying on Tarmac? 😉 MachineArt X Heads are another really effective addition id recommend 👍
Hi Bruce I’ve had both of these fitted to my bike for a long while. My only gripe I find is with the mud slinger and with this fitted the engine heat cannot disperse I can feel the engine heat even when riding on open roads.
I would print one on a 3D printer for that price you could buy a 3D printer. £200 I would at least expect full replacement mudguards not little bits of plastic. Why doesn't BMW fit as standard a decent mudguard away? Keep up the good work.
Bruce, I'd have you with a gun and shaky hands any day mate over 99% of the other channels - bar one - Richy "Vegas" - aka - "Vida". Massive fan of you both. Honestly, I am tortured by fender extenders, and the importance / protection they give ........... but on my old classics (early - mid 70's bkes)........... I need to use Blue Peter creativity with recycled Fairy Liquid bottles!!. Where are you Valerie Singleton and Peter Purves when we need you (John is obviously out walking Shep). He'll be back mate - to make the flame proof Christmas candle creation with 2 pairs of coat hangers. Older than you and Richy, Bruce but I am sure you can google John Noakes and the Christmas candle creation. Ride safe brother 😁
Love you mate, but HOW MUCH? You really can get these at a quarter of that price. I think I paid about £20 for my fender extender 2 years ago, and it’s exactly the same design as the one you have just fitted.
