Hello all and you're very welcome to the channel.
Here we are looking at and fitting some of the accessories available for the BMW R1250GS that are not from the major aftermarket brands but sourced on ebay in the UK.
I have to say with most I am pretty impressed and time will tell how they perform, but the price was certainly attractive. Links to the purchases are below and thanks to my mate 'Thirsty Sean' for the 'loan' of his BMW R1250GS 'Exclusive' and accessories to make this video.
Hope you enjoy the video.
Parts we fitted:
bit.ly/2TCJEAQ - Headlight Guard
bit.ly/3qevpAa - Fender Extender
bit.ly/3aitP8i - Bar Risers
bit.ly/2ucYx2g - Rear Hugger
bit.ly/30KWCyd - Frame Bung Set
bit.ly/2sDy51c - LED Light Set
Below are various links to kit I use or items referenced in this video.
These are amazon.co.uk (United Kingdom) links and clicking through and purchasing does earn me a small commission and costs you nothing extra.
I'd be really grateful if you are buying any of these if you used the links and help support the channel.
Thank you
Nick

Cheers Sam. Glad all ok. Just an update. On the hugger, the three bolts that hold hugger to frame should be threadlocked or they may work loose as they ‘bottom’ out without locking or spring washer 👍🏻

Thanks. I find most accessories that are moulded, fabricated or cast are ok. The finish may be a bit more rough and the plating not quite so deep, but basic things today can be easily copied with accuracy 👍🏻

I've previously had a rear hugger but it did not really appear to prevent muck spraying around, a mud sling at least keeps the rear suspension unit clean. I'm not sure why everyone slavishly fits bar risers.....can be good if you are tall and/or stand up a lot off road: The bars can be rotated within limits and this has been useful for me. I've tried various Chinese lights and have found quality control variable with imprecise beam patterns. I'm a Denali man and appreciate the EU marks for when the German police stop me.... I have just bought some Ali express engine protector bar scratch protectors (!?) for £3 delivered, can't complain! All the best, Nick in Knutsford.

Nick Laskaris thanks for the comment Nick. I think the combination of Mudsling and Hugger may be although some mention clearance then. The bar risers I feel I need as I’m long bodied and slouch a bit after a stretch of miles. I’m Denali too. It’s about the only thing I wouldn’t fit to mine I’d the Chinese lights. I love my Denali’s

For 2022 gs, I got, from Ebay. 2 touring windscreens, a Puig Windscreen visor, grill type head light guard, and driving lights guard. The windscreens don't fit perfectly, but flex enough to fit. I choked at the BMW dealer prices , for essentially the same stuff , also made in China.

Certainly all but the lights have been excellent. One LED light has water in but certainly all other bits are fine and you can add to that recently frame guards which fit identically to the Touratech ones (with the little screw into a rubber bung in the lower engine mount 👍🏻

Great video Nick - just one point about fitting the hugger, not just a cheap eBay hugger, but any hugger - I fitted exactly the same one as in your video and generously used Locktite Blue thread lock and correctly torqued - keep an eye on the torque arm securing bolt - despite the thread lock solution, the bolt has come loose twice in the past 1000 miles - I have just added a heavy duty spring washer to the bolt to see if that will stop it from vibrating loose.

Just dropping by to say nice selection of videos on the R1250. Nice work on the camera and editing. I like how you have multi-cam while still keeping audio voice-over concurrent which is really nice and pleasant. Keep up the great work. On this video, audio is left-channel only. Not sure if you were aware. I know how much work goes into making these videos so can appreciate the work you're putting into it.

I'm currently waiting delivery of my 1250 GS but have removed some of the items from my 1200 GS which I'll transfer across including a Puig hugger. I'd suggest you put some locktite on the threads of the 3 small bolts that hold the hugger to the bracket as I've had one come undone in the past. I've ordered some of those aux lights which I'll control via my hexezecan and one of those front fender extenders as my pyramid one has stayed on the 1200 as I had to drill the front mud guard. I've also ordered some smoked hand guard extenders as again I had to drill holes in the OE guards to fit the touratech ones on the 1200. I've bitten the bullet and gone for the xhead cylinder head covers rather than some more SW Motech engine bars as the ones on my 1200 don't fit and the xheads are cheaper and easier to fit and clean and I decided to get premium engine protection rather than risk ebay stuff not being up to the job if it's ever needed. I've also got some frame fillers too but just bought them separately off ebay after someone on UKGSer provided the sizes. Finally I also have the machine art mudsling which I bought after getting a cheap ebay one that didn't work very well, but have had to modify the hugger as with both fitted they rub against each other. Cheers for posting the vid, it was very useful.

@@nickhodgeUK Yes I'm looking forward to getting it as you can imagine. Regarding Sean's aux lights if he doesn't use the DIN accessory socket on the RHS of the dash he could take the power from there instead of direct from the battery. I did this with my square aux Lights I had on my previous one which meant I didn't have to remember to switch them off, plus if they went faulty I could simply unplug them. Cheers Ade

Nick, I have the Exclusive and on purchase last summer fitted a shed load of Touratech stuff to it. So now some would say "a fool and his money are soon parted" or perhaps from the opposite camp "if you can afford it, go for it". I was lucky to have been in Spain for the spring and sourced the lot (Evo Panniers, top and bottom engine protection bars, lens cover and two full Campanero suits) from the Alicante Touratech branch at far far lower prices than from the UK branch. This made it a very tempting proposition in kitting the bike out with top notch accessories. But my rationale for doing so in the first instance was that having shelled out big bucks for a new BMW there was no way i was going to fit cheap aftermarket accessories to it. They would probably do the job but why compromise if you've bought the best in the first place. The purists out there will surely spot the cheap bolt ons and compromises when it comes to resale time. The cheaper aftermarket goodies are fine IMHO for older bikes but not on a bike close on 20k new. I hope your friend doesn't regret not buying the quality Denalis and that all is well with the on board BMW electronics Like it or loathe it I think sometimes its necessary to add whats expected quality wise to a new bike to protect its kerb appeal. Nice vid all the same 👍

@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
Pete Hudson great comments Pete. Thanks for taking the time
@tartantam3405
@tartantam3405 4 года назад
I’m sorry but I can’t agree with that logic. The bike may be worth 20k (although at times I think that is debatable) but a bit of black plastic is a bit of black plastic! Putting it in a wrapper or box with Wunderlich on it shouldn’t quadruple its price. As for the Denali’s v Chinese lights, that may be a different case, as things that operate with a power feed can go wrong and although the Chinese lights are a fraction of the price it may be the case that they go wrong more often, which then depends on whether you can be bothered replacing them (for me, that’s a no-brainier but others may feel differently).
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
@@tartantam3405 Love opinions. Of the things I fitted the two I may NOT fit to mine (and Sean has doubts about one of them) are the lights (my Denali's and the whole Canbus integration I wouldn't swap) and the bar risers. Those are made VERY well but it does leave the cables pretty tight on full lock. Yet to see what 'premium' ones do, suspect they'll probably be little different to be fair

Yea I'm not totally sure the D7'S are the way to go. Knowing what I know now. I'll be putting a video up soon about them. I just noticed in your links you have an optimate twin usb. I bought a twin usb thing with a blue volt meter on it from Ebay. It lasted a while but died new years day in Spain. I think water got inside it. How do you rate that one you have? Mine lasted about 5k miles. Also it says it turns off after 3 hrs. Doesn't that socket turn off automatically after about 60 seconds? Which annoys me tbh.

Hi Nick, enjoyed this money saving video, as we say,, you pays yer money, I prefer the Puig Carbon look Hugger, std, front fender extender, wired in BMW spotlights with switch on the mirror housing, they do cost more but my preference, I also added the Denali horn which is super loud and bar up and back risers. As I am in the process of changing to the 1250 Exclusive , all these extras have to be removed as they will fit the new machine, surprising how long it takes to remove these add ons, we are ready now and waiting for the new 1250 to arrive soon and start to reinstall the kit, plus the headlight cover and need engine bars as the 1200 would not fit, hopefully having some custom made units from a local chap to me who specialises in stainless steel exhausts so a bit of pipe bending will be right up his street. Have you planned any rides for this year, we are having a slight change and heading south to start the season, hopefully a little warmer than going North, usual scenario for us now, bike into trailer and find a decent camp site and tour the area by Motorcycle? Very interesting video, thanks. It's always a dilemma - to save the money or to buy the original parts... Clearly, there's some IP involved in all of this, and having been involved in businesses that suffered from product cloning (to put it politely), I can see both sides. Having said that, in the BMW after-market the original parts prices are just eye-watering so I can completely understand why people choose the copies. I fitted the Wunderlich bar back/risers and the only observation I would make is that they appear to be a better match to the BMW parts - in terms of colour and texture, but otherwise exactly the same as the ones you fitted.
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
Richard D I’m with you Richard. Not only in IP if it’s ‘due’ but also that not all coming from China is poor, or good quality. It takes a trained eye. Having been in hand tool sales all my life I’ve seen the transition from UK to Germany, to Japan, to Taiwan and China (and countries between) and quality varied hugely. Not much in this batch was poorer than anything from the ‘premium’ aftermarket. I grant the fender extender had some plastic ‘bleed’ from the moulding but cleaned with the flick of a knife. I get that someone had to design and run prototypes and such for this but it is very tough to account for £49.99. Take £1.00 for the mould contribution in first 10,000 pcs. Still as you say eye-watering profit. Great of you to comment and ride safe

Hi AndrewI had a mudsling on a 2018 Rallye and it rubbed the tyre and in Rain and Road mode I sent the suspension a bit hay wire as in softer setting it interfered with the yaw, I see guys on RU-vid cutting them seems pretty pointless after spending 130 quid !!.

I’ve got loads of cheapo eBay accessories on my GS650 twin. Beak extender, front mudguard extender, radiator grille, etc. These all seem to be nicely made, well fitting items for a fraction of the cost of yer Wunderlich, Touratech , Motoraad et al. BUT, my safety is not dependent upon any of these parts, they can fall to bits above 30 mph and it wouldn’t matter a damn. My handlebar risers (shutup, I’m very tall and very old !) are pukka ones, I do fancy a footpeg lowering kit and the W/lich price is absolutely crazy by the time you’ve bought all the bits required. .... mmmm only 30 quid from the bay .... yeah but what if they broke ? Thing is, they might be absolutely fine, those other parts are, but,,, I don’t put all my weight on them, or entrust ‘em with my life. The GSA comes with racks for which there are several that fit straight on (eg Touratech, Bumot), but equally, some also need different racks (eg Givi). Hi Dale. It’s a mate’s bike but yes all good. On the hugger we had to apply threadlock to the three bolts holding the plastic to the frame as they came loose but I should have realised they had no washers to tighten to. I love the GSA but it’s actually VERY different even than the GS. It is heavier when full. Seems taller and less nimble but has great presence and the weather protection particularly on motorways is awesome. I rode the XR the other day and that is a weapon!!! Personally I don’t think I could get on with keeping it alight (as it wants). The GS(A) is no slouch but sedate in comparison. I also found the seat a bit ‘slippy’ on the XR and it lacked adjustment. Then a silly thing, but my want to be visible had a real issue with no proper rear light unit. Just the rim of the rear indicators. Both VERY fine bikes but you may get in better with a GS than an adventure if you want to be near the nimbleness of the XR 👍🏻

@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
Hi Jose. I guess as we would say “You pay your money and take your choice”. Don’t think there’s much in them. What I didn’t want was a big bag and the Givi is about right. I thought it was a bit too small but have found it carries everything I want to hand. Glasses, wallet, visor cloth and spray, change and with a USB adapter charges my phone and GoPro batteries as I ride. Like that I can simply pull a lever and refuel. Not that all those things aren’t possible with SWM, but I’m happy. I’ve not found I need mirror extensions. I have quite a wide body and can generally see fine. Have always looked around too before making manoeuvres on motorways (lane changing) as stuff is not there one second and IS there the next. Thanks for the comment and ride safe

Hi Nick, I liked your video, i purchased the front and rear fender extenders based on this. I have one big issue, the rear hugger main fitting contains a bush, which destroyed itself well before i got to the torque required. On FB I see I'm not the only one with similar issues with the bush and bolt. Do you know what material this should be manufactured from? It needs to allow some movement by the look of it. I'm removing the hugger until i can sort this.
@nickhodgeUK
@nickhodgeUK 4 года назад
Hi Steve, Really the bolt holds the hugger although we did add some loctite. The rubber bush is really a vibration shock absorber so I’d say try and source maybe better quality rubber and fit bushes? A good motor factor maybe??
@stevewainwright669
@stevewainwright669 4 года назад
@@nickhodgeUK Thanks Nick, the issue is it needs 54 Foot Pounds AND the strongest type of Lock-tight as its a key suspension link which also needs to flex. The bush has to take that torque, it also needs to allow movement of that joint and it seems its made of a very inferior material. There are several people complaining on FB. The only solution is to get a bush made, exactly the right length, to allow this torque, without squashing the hugger, then apply Lock-tight. The BMW manual calls for the very strongest Lock-tight, as they know how important this link is. If i can get a bush turned to fit, I will try to find a rubber bush to hold the hugger in place, but this is secondary in its importance. You must not let the ally casting take that torque, otherwise it will crack under load while riding. I'll say nothing, but I strongly believe you should put a warning on your video as this is an accident waiting to happen. One guy has posted that BMW noticed the bolt had undone almost completely during a service and warned him it would have collapsed the rear if it had undone slightly more.

No but I guess that’s the gauntlet you run. I have heard people order £2 iPhone cases and get £24 duty. Normally if it’s declared properly and of low value then it seems ok. It’s definitely carrier specific too. If they use DHL for example, they are geared to charge duties others are not. I also believe some have handlers in the UK who hold the stock but guess they have to warn in case they charge. Bear in mind too, the duty on most metal parts from China is 2.7% (plastics more) which is trivial. It is the carriers that levy a surcharge of £20+ to collect the duty

Oh god, looks like Right Said Fred are making a come back. Pretty sure I know “Thirsty Sean” from the Cleveland. The only thing he was thirsty for is men.

I am curious if the headlight guard causes any reflection or glare issues.

Ford Rox doesn’t seem too. I guess as it gets old and inevitably scratched it will detract light but I guess no more than the ‘premium’ aftermarket ones? There’s a good gap to circulate air and have ability to clean although it’s an unscrew if you want to be scrupulous

I have fitted this headlight guard and I can't say I have noticed any glare or reflection, and I used this one as in my mind the metal ones must block some of the light out?

Handlebar relocation will destroy your posture for off road, probably okay if you only ride on roads

@@nickhodgeUK That’s great, thats all that matters. If he plans on off road riding (Not gravel roads, thats still road) he might have to rethink it. For road riding I am sure it adds to his comfort,

Hi Nick, as usual very informative video!!! Thanks a lot. I'm very much interested by the Fender Extender (w/o any need of drilling holes) but when clicking on your EBay link this part doesn't seems to exist anymore. Any other reference / link? Also, on the same vein, any link / reference for a mee too of the Mudsling rear suspension guard? Mudsling seems great but so much outpriced. For both front and rear the cost is 169£ + shipment (for 2 pieces of injection mold plastic)...THANKS BEFOREHAND

Hi Eric I updated the link to another (looks like UK now has many people stocking Chinese ones now, but this is the no-drill one). Here is a link to a mudsling equivalent. (be aware this is from China, no experience in it and also sometimes you'll be hit with duty and stuff so Caveat Emptor! bit.ly/3fPPIPD
