In this video review, Chris talks through the motorcycle base layering system. Now, everybody has heard about base-layers and layering, but most bikers think that they only really apply to mountaineers or to those who ride huge mileages in extreme conditions. Most don’t realise that when they wear a technical outfit with a membrane they prevent it from functioning as it’s supposed to when they fail to wear the correct gear beneath it. And that’s down to the membrane. Now membranes are very clever. They don’t just work in the rain. They allow us to ride comfortably. They enable the body to keep cool. They prevent the sweat that we are always generating from making us wet and clammy. And they prevent evaporative cooling making us feel even colder when the temperatures drop. When we’re motorcycling, the aim is always to be as comfortable on the bike as we can be because, if we are, we can concentrate on the road and staying safe. To be comfortable in all conditions, you need the right base layers. Wear a cotton T-shirt or a collared, cotton shirt and you will reduce breathability. And if your skin can’t breathe, the membrane can’t do it’s job. You have effectively wasted money, because your motorcycle suit won’t protect you from the elements in the way it was designed to. This isn’t rocket science, but the subject matter is both technical and interesting. In this review, Chris does his best to explain the issues, which he does with reference to the various base- and mid-layers produced by Halvarssons.
