This was all down to drivers. The Evo driver completely messed up the start. I'm in the Mitsubishi camp though I think in the UK the Evo was always slightly quicker and better looking
I love subaru's but have to disagree with you on the awd system. The super active yaw control on the EVO is the worlds most advanced AWD system and not even used in their rally cars because of fear it may be banned.

Thats not the reason they're illegal, that could be fixed by adding a catalytic converter. It's illegal because they weren't officially crash tested. The company Motorex, which has an ad in the beginning of this video, actually crash tested a few and legally imported some skylines with safety modifications for a period of time before shady business practices got them shut down.

Also, different states have varying laws regarding what "vintage" means. The R34 is too modern to fall into that category. The reason it can't be imported is due to safety requirements and the lack of crash test data.
