These are the best OBS settings for recording 2K or 1080p footage at 60FPS with no-lag in-game. I show the difference between using different downscaling filters, how performance depends on the bitrate used, which bitrate yields the best image quality while retaining the smallest file size possible and finally which color range and space is the best for recording!

Great video. For everyone looking into the comment section and trying to see if this video helped someone out, it definitely did. I have a gtx 1060 with an i7-7700HK processor and I was having trouble getting a fixed 60 FPS while recording with OBS. With my settings before watching this video, I was getting ~70FPS from my game and my recording frame rate from OBS was fluctuating from 56 to 30 FPS. I copied all of his settings, NOW I’m getting 100+ frames from my game AND getting a fixed recording frame rate of 60 FPS from OBS. This was a MASSIVE improvement. I’m never a person who comments on a video like this, but I spent hours trying to fix it on my own, but with this video’s help, it took me 10 minutes to fix my problem and it definitely deserves this feedback. I hope this helps others and THANK YOU for this awesome video!

Thank god, finally ! I was struggling for so long. I was desperate at first, I followed every steps shown in the video but it was still choppy. But then I realised that once I close OBS AND watch the video back again, it becomes all smooth and beautiful. Thank you, good Sir.

Thanks! The "Preset" 09:52 was the culprit causing lag for me. Having it on 'Max Quality' caused major lag at 4K60p, but now with it set to 'Quality' I am getting ultra smooth 100MB/s 4K60p video. In terms of Color range 10:50, 'Partial' is identical to what I see on screen. 'Full Color Range' adds major contrast to the video, making it far darker than it should be

Actually, I take that back! It lasted for a 30mins before going bag to a laggy mess again. I give up on OBS, its very badly optimized. I have a Ryzen 3700x and RTX 2070 Super. I should have no problem recording 4k60p, but OBS refuses to work. I use Nvidia Shadowplay that comes with the Geforce Experience software and it runs so well. No issues at 4K60p. The only reason I want to swap to OBS is because the video and audio encoders with Shadowplay are a little low and you can't custom set them to anything higher, causing some artifacting in the video, and audio clipping with high volume sounds like big explosions in game. If Nvidia can sort this out,. I will never need OBS again.

Hello. In the "advanced" tab, we have to pay attention at "YUV color range" because, in some games, "full" range can make the game look darker than "partial". I am recording an old game and "partial" is better than "full". BTW, very good video!

Hey, I followed this tutorial a few weeks ago and it was working great. I got 1080p 60fps while still getting 200+ on Fortnite. However, when I went on vacation and came back a week later, I can’t seem to get anywhere near 60fps even though I didn’t change anything. I’ve tried these exact settings and a lot of other ones. None of my specs have changed. I have a: Ryzen 5 2600X GTX 1050 2gb 16gb ram Thanks

I struggle a lot because I also use 2K Monitor and when I recorded a game, it was drop to lower fps and also stuttered (I Tested on AAA games with max settings) while when using shadowplay, there's no problem. What I wanna ask, is there any difference between using Max Quality/High Quality and Quality in recording settings? Thank you.

But which settings do you think make the most sense if I stream and record at the same time to create a highlight video from the video material? Especially the points "Base resolution" and "Output resolution" give me a headache. Because at one point I have to bite the bullet, right? I'd like to see a video where you're going to focus on the best settings for simultaneous streaming and recording.

Hey thank you so much man! Hope to make informative videos that help out lots of people interested in these topics. Now if you would like to stream and record at the same time, frankly I would just use OBS to stream (at a downscaled resolution) and use Nvidia shadowplay to save highlight clips (granted that you have a recent NVIDIA card). If you want to record AND stream with OBS than yes, you will have to bite the bullet and use the encoder downscale option for streaming which will make your game performance drop significantly (as found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5EYAmwEdApM.html)

I've always been using x264 because I thought that the only way to have good quality was to use Nvidia or other graphics cards which were too expensive. Thank you for this video, cause now I can see if recordings will be any smoother, and I think they will.

So the best bitrate is based off of you display size right? 1920x1080 = 40'000 bitrate 2k = 70'000 bitrate 4k = 100'000 bitrate? I have a 4k monitor so I was wondering if I should set my bitrate to 100'000 or should I keep it at 70'000?

The use of OBS Studio comes with two challenges: 1. It is not for use with high CPU games, record so will give you a very laggy output even though it says 60 fps. Even so, low CPU games are not immune either, you still get duplicate frames. 2. OBS Studio always consumes some GPU resources when idling without recording anything, unless you close OBS Studio. This can have an adverse impact on game smoothness even though you are not recording. Unfortunately for both of these, no matter how hard you try, cannot be solved, since both problems are in the software itself.

I don't know if I did somenthing wrong. Or maybe is the game that I was using for testing. But every time I record, the game work perfecr but the record have a loooot of lag, I have a 1080ti, 16gb ram 3000mhz, r5 2600. The game that I'm using is monster hunter. Didn't change the settings on the game, i know that could helps, but what i did was to reduce the output resolution on 1080p and fixed a little bit. But with mhw I always have problems recording it.

Im afraid GT cards do not support NVENC.. You need at least a GTX560 or newer

Great video, thanks for sharing. I have a question you say its best to have one profile for streaming and one for recording, do you think its wise to have a 3rd that streams and records? I was thinking on going NVENC with high bitrate for local recording and x264 for low bitrate streaming? CPU will be a i9 7940X and GPU will be a GTX1080Ti.

For capturing from a console or another PC? Definitely x264 if you're PC can run the medium preset, otherwise NVENC (new)

Hey your videos are super useful and the streaming set up one helped me to get a really nice quality. I have a question if you wouldn't mind answering... I am trying to get a good recording quality and I am following your steps here but on RU-vid my videos seem to blur somewhat when there is a lot of movement (example /watch?v=IXPDwCLr5k4) Would this be an issue with the drive I am recording to being too slow? I am using the NVENC encoder and recording in 1080p, 60 FPS and 50,000 bitrate. Also i'm wondering what's the main difference between streaming in 1080p or downscaling it to 810p. Is this just to help people with worse connections view the stream, or is it for less strain on the PC? Thanks.

Awesome, thanks man! I've checked out your clip and I think the reason for your poor quality is the notoriously bad AVC encoder... You could render your videos at 1440p (simply upscaling it and applying a bit of sharpener) which would result in much better video quality (see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pfszfVlKyZg.html for more details on VP9). Conversely, you could try to render using these settings: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gUjdQnJSdV0.html For your second question: Its absolutely much less heavy on your PC. The lower the streamed resolution the better your in-game performance

I have an i7-10700K and RTX 2080, and both the nVidia and x.264 encoders gave me the same poor frame rate in the final recording, which was not even close to 60 fps.

I am on a 3900x with 16GB ram and 5700XT and I struggle to find settings where mz recordings are not choppy and don't look shit. I am new to recording though but maybe there's something specific to the whole amd platform!? but my machine should be powerful enough to handle streaming and recording right? I have another 16gb sitting around but for some reason my system wont run the ram on 3600 anymore if i add those

I want to record screen and webcam, but I have a large monitor with 34 inches, and a resolution of 3440x1440. I don't want to record all screen area, but only an area of 1920x1080 pixels. In OBS, in Sources window, options like Display Capture doesn't offer an option TO SELECT AN AREA in the screen to be recorded. What should I do to record ONLY A PART of the screen?

You might be able to set your canvas (base) resolution to 1080p and set your display capture up to only overlap in the middle. Not sure it works or that I would recommend it anyways tbh

You should make a new video because for the CPU Usage Preset they changed it to fast, faster, veryfast etc.

This video is not for recording with x264 but NVENC. There CPU (x264) usage presets exist since forever...

Google and some RU-vidrs say that cqp is best fro recording but many people disagree and use a different form of bitrate so idk

And your in-game framerate always stayed above 60? You are recording to SDD or HDD? If you record to the HDD, try recording to your SDD
