Best of Christopher Hitchens vs. Religion 

I miss Mr. Hitchens. He provides valuable _anger_ about the stupidity of religion. This is a wonderful collection of times when he commented on cosmology, birth and extinction. Thanks so much, TWT.

Freeing myself from the guilt and constraints of religion as a young man was the best decision of my life, allowing me to enjoy life to the fullest. The horrible lies foisted on children by religions should be a crime against humanity.

Rational minded people are the future.

It's a shame he isn't with us anymore to continue his amazing work. RIP 💜 It's up to us to continue.

He had such an ability to both argue his point with intelligence but also brevity. He could, in very few words, laser focus on the problem of whatever he was arguing against and also overwhelm with evidence.

I could listen to Christopher Hitchens all night long, a brave and courageous man who said it as it is without fear, no doubt these days he would be cancelled in a heartbeat!!

So nice to listen to him. Often watch his speeches and debates.

The fact there's over a thousand official religions on our planet as we speak, is proof that they're all man-made. If there IS a god, then there'd be just the one religion.

Hichtcens and Hawking nailed it!

I do not follow gods as I have no need for them. I believe in those things that I am able to observe. I have knowledge of them. How can superstition be knowledge? Is it not a source of contention? How can a god be strong if it needs my faith for its own existence? Does that not show that gods only exist within your mind? If you are ruled by fear, is that not coercion? Is your faith not vanity? Do you ask "how can it be if not for my superstition"? The mystery itself is the doorway to all understanding. When superstition closes the door, then truth and understanding can never be found. We live in a natural world. Not a supernatural one. The existence of something is not evidence of anything other than its existence. The natural world existed long before man created the superstitions.

Atheism, Agnostic, and Non-Believers is not a religion. We don't have a book we go buy. We have life. We have knowledge for asking questions. We atack life with perseverance. A meaning, a desire. We make no excuses. We accept our lives for what it is. We don't live to fear life. We overcome the fear of life by enjoying it without restrictions.

This video starts out with a few poetic excesses which I think Hitchens could have brought into better alignment with science, but his points are still essentially correct. And his subsequent points are still better. The expansion of the universe is accelerating, though it's not clear that the acceleration is based on the same process as the inflationary period we call the Big Bang. And because it's accelerating, the universe is becoming more sparse and more redshifted. The ultimate prospects are very lonely. The Andromeda galaxy is on a collision course with the Milky Way, but the reference to Andromeda being visible in the night sky is not about some imminent event. It's about 4.5 billion years off. The timeline for this, coincidentally, is about the same as for our Sun to flare and then become a white dwarf. So we're presently about halfway through the lifetime of our solar system and of our planet. It's almost inconceivably long, but it is finite, and also fairly typical for the universe at large. And Hitchens is right to point out that the entire existence of the human species covers at most a few hundred thousand years. Think about it. Just working from what we know, we can no more conceive of ourselves a thousand years from now as people in the Middle Ages could conceived of us. I mean, of course love will be the same, apple trees will still bear apples, running through a field of grass will feel the same, ageing and poor health and death will bring the same grief and anger and acceptance. That part of humanity will be the same in a thousand years. But our way of life, our social organization, certainly our technology, is much harder to imagine. Mirrors were high technology in the Middle Ages. And that is just one thousand years. Imagine a hundred thousand years. We will have visibly evolved, quite possibly become a new species. There will still be love, and some fruit reminiscent of apples, and so on. We could relate to this future species to some degree, but it's all becoming very different. And that's just 100K years. Imagine 100 million years. That's going back to the age of the dinosaurs. Will there be dinosaurs instead of humans this far again into the future? Who knows. But the transformation is massive at this scale. Abd that's just 100K years. Imagine a billion years. Now imagine that much time being like the first week of a four week vacation. We're barely getting into the mood during the first week.

Hitchens was wonderful.

I always increase my vocabulary every time I watch a Hitchens video. Invigilation, who knew?

Chris got his clock cleaned when he debated William lane Craig.

Technology allows his beautiful and striking voice to endure. About as close to immortality as we can hope to get. CH sorely missed.

Estoy cansado y sigo tirando como malamente puedo. La humanidad censura el conocimiento que salva las vidas de sus propios hijos, no les afecta, no estimula una reacción. Estoy hablando de realidad que supera la ficción que está pasando delante de tus propios ojos. ¿Es posible estar equivocado creyendo? Entender que Dios es necesario porque de la nada no puede ser creado algo es el más grande conocimiento que te salvará literalmente la vida. Soy un psicólogo y persona de muchos talentos, no un charlatán buscando atención. ¿Importa saber si fuimos creados por algo increíblemente poderoso e inteligente?
