They consider it human cuz he acted out of emotion. Psycho would have been him planning to set up Paul. Everything he did was very improvised that's why he gets caught on it.
That’s the thing. It’s not a psycho thing to do as he lost control of his emotions. Psychopaths don’t feel emotions like regular folk. He got pissed because he was insulting Rita, someone he cared about. Psychopaths don’t care about anything other than how it affects themselves and how useful they can be to their own goals.
@@MR.ICE. psychopathy is characterized by impulsivity, the "psychopaths are careful, calculated and unemotional" idea is just a rumor, that's machiavellianism which isn't even in the dsm
From what I understand Sociopaths have trouble controlling their emotions and impulses, so if they feel like doing it they will. They might regret it but they will still likely do it again out of their control. A psychopath genuinely does not think what they are doing is wrong. It's the most logical thing and even common sense to do the things they do, if they kill or hurt someone they genuinely wonder why others are making a big deal of it. Both can feel emotions, they just don't process it the way we do
I love after he has his meltdown about miguels shirt, Miguel comes in like some comedy skit asking to play golf, and Dexter turns around like all is well, You bet! 😊
I think if the show ended with Dexter turning himself in and being sentenced to life in prison, that would be a happy ending for him. He would no longer have to pretend. And he'd probably be famous. The public would probably praise him as a hero, and he'd exit the courthouse to a crowd of cheering people holding up banners to support Dexter (like he always dreamed). He'd be the most famous serial killer in existance. He'd be interviewed by everyone. He'd write bestselling books. He'd still work as a consultant for the police and FBI on blood spatter and criminal profiling. He'd probably teach seminars on on advanced methods of profiling serial killers. Psychologist would love to talk to him and learn about his psych, plus he'd actually be able to talk to a psychologist to work through his trauma. And he'd feel no temptation to kill because his code won't allow him to target criminals in prison. I think that would have been a proper happy ending for Dexter. Also where Deb is alive and raising Harrison.
@@jonathanoneill8655 yeah, but there would be so much public support for Dexter that they'd likely make an exception and sentence him to life in prison.
It was so funny when he told Dexter that you don't even walk normal you walk like a lizard on ice he does glide 🤣 he knew something was up with dex from the start 😂
I watched Dexter as I was going through Interferon Treatment for Hep C and that shit was no joke- I spent 15 weeks in bed. But Dexter was what I watched when I was able to stay awake long enough and I still love it. I swear this show and discovering Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly” album saved me…
@@loganblackwood2922 I am FANTASTIC, thank YOU! Life is friggin’ awesome tbh… if you’d told me THEN that *this* would be my life now… i wouldn’t have believed you. Luckily Hep C patients don’t have to use those horrible drugs anymore- there are MUCH easier treatments and more options now!! 🌻💕🌼
@@AprilSilvers-py4zj no he's always had feelings, look at Brian, Rita, Astor and Cody. he feels super guilty after hurting them, have you seen the end of season 4 or not?
this show is always saying "Iam Dexter, I don´t have any feelings/social skills." when most of the time dexter has above average social intelligence and skills. An average introvert would be jealous of.
Lots of practice regarding social skills and as for the no feelings thing that's mostly true but partly in his head because he struggles with his identity and Harry didn't really help
As the show progressed I got the feeling the growing tragedy was Dexter really did have feelings, he was traumatised and repressed and he raised to display this in a horrible way. Harry for the few seasons was kinda a villain. He didn’t know how to handle Dexter so groomed him into a killer, once he saw him reach his fully potential he killer himself. Dexter doesn’t realise this till the end of season 2 after countless murders. Yes he did kill only killers that escaped the law but a lot of the time he hid evidence or messed it up so they’d be let out again so he could kill them himseelves. In the end he had urges to kill but he valued people more like Debra and Rita. It’s tragic he was raised to believe and think he had no feelings but really he did and if he had realised earlier he could’ve had a good life. But this is a tangit, they should’ve evolved him from season 2 onwards knowing he has a choice and not the “dark passenger”. He has a conscious. I think he should’ve killed doakes in the show and has his code slowly fall apart like how in season 7 he comes close to killing laguetta but Debra shot her. The show in two occasions shot down interesting moral dilemma just for someone to make those choices for him so he’s not challenged.
The original story is all about gore tho. Dexter is suposed to chop people apart with chainsaws like they did to his mother. Guess the showrunner thought that wouldnt be nice on tv😂
He was right but he was a killer too, his own code, but still. It must've been like Jack (The Narrator) & Marla in Fight Club; Doakes knew Dexter was a "tourist" when acting normal lol
everyone always wondering how Dokes knew there was something Muderously off about Dexter....dude was Former Special Forces he know's a killer when he sees 1
I still think Dexter had feelings he was not 100% psychopath if he was his family would mean nothing to him in bad times like trinity's family was to him. Even the doctor that made Dexter was surprised he showed feelings for others was small but his son Hanna and deb are ones he loved and cared for and would never kill even if they fit his code like Hanna did.
all psychopaths have feelings. they’re just not convinced that yours matter. they don’t see you. psychopaths are hugely emotional people even though that emotionality isn’t always demonstrated in a way we recognize.
Psychopaths aren't emotionless, like the other guy said they just think "aight fk everyone else" but they actually mean it, and they don't feel some emotions or have the same inhibitions others have. For example if you are competing with someone for something, a normal person works to be beat the other person. A Psychopath thinks the most straightforward way would be to kill the other person and will be at first puzzled why noone thinks of that
One of my FAV scenes was when Dexter went to his HS reunion and was dancing to Mc Hammer ' cant touch this ' when he did the typewriter dance I DIED!😂😂😂😂❤
Michael C Hall is incredible as Dexter!! He's handsome, sexy n charming n super talented!! I watch Dexter over n over again just to watch his handsome face n brilliant acting!!
4:40 as smart as dex is. He should know that client confidentiality only extends to legal things, not illegal. Same as an nda, as soon as a crime has been witnessed you can report it because that contract is null and void
I love the subtle nod towards Dexter being a true psychopath at 2:39 when he doesn't flinch or jump. Apparently that's a trait, I've read and seen things on it - but I'm NO expert nor psychologist. Might not have even been intentional 🤷♂️😂
@@sanicspeed1672there’s no real difference they’re just colloquial terms. “sociopath” seems to have a softer connotation for people but ASPD is the same disorder no matter what you call it.
@@tonoornottonoa psychopath is born like that without capability for empathy, a sociopath is created by trauma and abuse and they have severely reduced empathy
@@jdwylde7i guess but to me it felt out of place. it feels like he just decided to grow out of it. and also makes asexuality something to be fixed. imo he didn't need to find sex to grow as a character. i think him discovering the love he feels towards rita in a romantic sense accomplishes the same thing but way better and was just more compelling. i havent watched the show in like 6 years at least though so my memory isnt perfect
When I first saw Dexter lose his shit realizing Miguel used him, I thought it was for real until he walked in and that was just all in his head of how he feels.
"The only real question I have is why in a building full of cops, all supposedly with a keen insight to the human soul, is Doakes the only one who gets the creeps from me."
I remember watching this after Scandal and seeing Fitz as the therapist I just laughed and said damn he fell on hard times from Leader of the free world to "So what's bothering you?"
6:38 - WTF??? *_That phrase is lifted from Megadeth lyrics!!!_* The song is called "Captive Honor" and its on the Countdown to Extinction album, and Dave Mustaine lifted that quote from its original attribution, Jean Rostand's book _Thoughts of a Biologist_ (1938) ....
After season 5, the feel and story line of the series declined. The gem we had practically disappeared, the writers took a route with the story that was at times unreal and illogical for the characters, the villains actors selection declined significantly. What made Dexter a cultural Icon was Michael C Hall and the writing/acting of the first five seasons.
Best series ever invented. The reason I know this is because once I watch the whole series I miss it and find myself Starting it over from the beginning again. Lol 😆 🤣
autism is a collection of symptoms more than it is an actual disorder to have in and of itself. dexter absolutely demonstrates many facets of the autism spectrum, like many people with antisocial personality disorder.
his lack of attraction is pretty well understood at this point. that’s all asexuality is. he’s not attracted to anybody. didn’t he start off pretty sex-repulsed? maybe he gets used to the act itself but it’s clear as hell that he’s not “attracted,” which is literally the only thing asexuality means.
@@MariaHeredia-dw4id that’s not how asexuality works. asexuality is a lack of sexual attraction, which i think is pretty well demonstrated in the show. asexuals can still have sex and stuff- and to dexter, heteronormativity is just another mask. sex is a mask for him, it has the utility of making him look normal. fatherhood does the same. but he mentions multiple times that he doesn’t feel any need for sex or any true sexual attraction for anybody. that’s all that asexuality is.
@tonoornottono That’s not how asexuality works! Asexual - A term used to describe someone who does not experience sexual attraction toward individuals of any gender. Asexuality is a sexual orientation, and is different from celibacy, in that celibacy is the choice to refrain from engaging in sexual behaviors and does not comment on one's sexual attractions. If Dexter was truly asexual he wouldn’t have had GFs or a family. It’s not that hard to understand plus remember throughout the series when he was younger Harry had to push home to interact with teenage girls his own age! Most asexuals love themselves and have some issues with the other genders which is why they don’t focus on them.Dexter was a straight white guy who’s just indifferent to women because he has bigger issues than them.On top most asexual don’t participate in sexual relationships which is why they’re asexual.
@@MariaHeredia-dw4id do you know any asexuals? i do. you literally wrote the definition here: “a term used to describe someone who does not experience sexual attraction towards individuals of any gender.” yeah. that’s what i said, too. then you differentiate it from celibacy- which is exactly what i did. asexuality is a lack of ATTRACTION. it is not the inability or unwillingness to have sex, or even to have romantic relationships. an asexual may not be attracted to anybody, but may enjoy the physical sensation of sex. as a sexual orientation it is entirely concerned with the question of sexual attraction, not physical or romantic compatibility. we learn very clearly that he has no sexual attraction- this is the literal definition as you have just written it. he meets this criteria. his participation in romantic and sexual relationships is done purely out of a sense of normalcy. it is a mask for him. he literally says this in the show. his lack of attraction is the only criteria for being asexual- his participation is neither here nor there. it has nothing to do with the category.
I don't know why, but Elliot Alderson from Mr Robot and Dexter seem like two halves of the same coin. Elliott doesn't necessarily kill people though, but he does hack them and put them in pretty much unavoidable deathly situations while Dexter just takes it into his own hands in the old school way.
Dexter in an apocalypse would kill off all the remaining humans / if there are no humans he would go mad and probably kill himself like the rest of us.
