Jean Stapleton never did anything without being paid. She said so on Donny and Marie's talk show.. She was asked to do the Edith voice, and refused unless they paid her. Lost all respect for her. She was a pride.
@carolmanning1333 You lost all respect for Jean Stapleton? Lol! How is that even possible? She was an actress and doing Edith was a job. Would you work for free? On the other side of the coin, why not do a sentence or two? It's not to be questioned. It's a matter of respect. Look at her credits online. Phenomenal actress as was her sister, Maureen.
@@Lieveheersbeestje1962 Archie was able to play against type in "In The HEat Of The Night" in the 80s. Edith was able to play against type in future roles as she was an accomplished theater actress. Meathead pretty much parlayed his success behind the camera as a big director. And Little Girl, well she became the big girl of TV/VCR repair and the starving kids.
Edith has got to be one of the most beloved TV characters of all time. I remember when she died and the world went into mourning. I saw Jean Stapleton in interviews afterward and she tried to play it down but people would just gush about Edith. Of course the character's thoughts and actions are based on the writing but Jean brought the character to life in a masterful and magical way. True artistry. I hope the younger generations and the future does not forget her, both the character and the actress.
I recall the wide scale mourning, too. The show was never the same. I was too young to know anything about ratings but I suspect they noticeably dropped.
There is no way to fully comprehend the brilliance of Jean Stapleton as Edith Bunker!! She is simply without peer as a Television actress. Any time before or since!! A veritable parade of Television Actresses behind her, fighting for the second spot on the podium. This the funniest, most heart wrenching, tear jerking, collection of clips ever witnessed on the small screen. All because of this virtuoso that never failed to make us laugh. And most all, to make us cry. The scene where Louise Jefferson and Edith are saying goodbye could squeeze tears from a Granite Stone!! Surpassed only by the later scene where Edith hides her illness from Archie. That is the greatest scene in the history of this classic series. OR ANY OTHER. The greatest husband and wife team ever to appear on the Small or Big Screen. Is it any wonder that when Edith was written out of the show the Legendary Norman Lear nearly snapped. "She's just a Television Character," Stapleton told him. "Not to me she wasnt," Lear replied. Let's get this straight. JEAN STAPLETON DIDNT PLAY EDITH BUNKER. SHE WAS EDITH BUNKER. The greatest Television Actress of All Time. Now and forever.
All Archie ever really wanted was to come home to the wife he loved, sit in his chair, have a cold adult beverage, and have peace in his house, and you can't hate a guy for that 🥰
1 of my favorite tv Moms. Edith really came around to speaking her peace, with each season. Jean Stapleton brought such a presence and a love for dingbats, LoL. 😊 She earned her Emmys.
BEST sitcom of the 70s. Norman Lear stoled my heart with this sitcom that I watch in these times STILL. All In The Family characters could NOT had been done better by any other actors. RIP Carroll O'Connor. RIP Jean Stapleton. I think Americans fell in love with the sitcom because it had heart in how it addressed serious issues that hit home. But loved Stapleton & O'Connor in other movies & series too. Sad about O'Connor's person life as he got older and what happened to his son and wife. Glad to see Rob Reiner still in the SHOW BIZ. And Thank You Sally Struthers and Jean Stapleton for helping women break through that male dominant barrier. Thankful for the 70s helping American society evolve regarding to women. I just wish America and the world would EVOLVE regarding animals as considered mere objects, harmed & killed.
With this show, the acting skills are so brilliant., you feel as though you are really watching a real family in their lives. Jean and Carrol especially are excellent to watch. The set is so realistic. The subjects are interesting yet funny. Wonderful show!
Yes, wonderfully cast, and the recast version with Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner was soooo much better than the other two pilots of the same scene and different actors.
5) The Games Bunkers Play This segment exemplifies the depth of insight and character of Edith Bunker more than most any other episode. Edith's character as written was profoundly wise and not just a pip or a dingbat. Jean Stapleton brought Edith to life brilliantly for all to see. 👍🏽💯🤗
There’s so many favourite moments it’s hard to choose. But one of mine is when Edith had lost her friend Beverly Lasell when Mike spoke with her and she regained her faith back.
I just recently watched the Archie Bunker's Place episode where Edith dies. During the scene where Archie started sobbing on Edith's slipper, I cried with him! 😢 Edith was a sweetheart and a wonderful wife to Archie. My advice to you men: if you find a woman who will love you unconditionally and stick by you through thick and thin like Edith, DON'T LET HER GO!
No else could have played that role the way Jean Stapleton did. She and Carroll O' Conner had the best chemistry I've ever seen in a television couple. (p.s I adored Edith's wardrobe. Kudos to whoever was responsible for that!)
Archie was the guy we loved to hate, but TWO episodes stand out. WHen he an Mike got locked in the freezer at the bar, and when Edith died. You saw the real humanity in him. I love that stuff, like when Frank Burns got to show HIS humanity and wit those precious few times. As someone who saw a girl I ADORED go off with someone else and marry them (My best friend and she and I are married NOW , so..) I tear up every time I see the scene Hot Lips leaves on her honeymoon . "Goodbye Margaret" . I also have a step Dad like Archie, completely ignorant of the world around him but convinced he knows everything, and then..when you least expected it a wonderful gesture.
She really made this show ❤❤❤ I watched it when I was a little girl at my grandparents. Of course back then I didn't realize what was happening and understand it but....... I still loved it.
Major issues addressed with humor and love. Great series during times that seemed more simple yet in reality were not. Character of Edith was heartfelt.
Edith Bunker is such a Hufflepuff, a person who always does the right thing, not for any benefit to themselves, but because its simply the right thing to do.
Jean Stapleton was versatile. She and Marion Ross (of Happy Days) both played the Brewster sisters, the sweet homicidal old ladies in Arsenic and Old Lace.
It's kinda sad that it took Edith being SICK for Archie to realize n I quote " if the whole world went to the dogs as long as I have you by my side, I've been blowing my own horn for alot of years, I ain't nothing without you"!! Sad is she died!! broke my ❤️ heart!!!!
It Seems like if something was important enough to Edith she stood up to Archie The Look Archie had on his face I think Edith was shocked 😲 herself LOL 😆
In a rather strange way. Edith reminds me of my late mom. She ❤ her family, her child, neighbours, son-in-law and just about anyone and everyone who crosses her path. She ❤ cooking for her family and always looks at people's good side.
I think a lot of us of a 'certain age' all knew people like Archie and Edith back in the day. You can't tell these kids today how common people like that were 50 years ago.
i think with that last one, Carroll really meant it when he said that he was nothing without her. He probably knew Jean was leaving soon, by then, so could have been thinkin about that when he said that.
Yes; that scene and the monologue he does with the slipper in the bedroom after Edith's death have to be his 2 top scenes. Well, maybe the anger he displays in the draft dodger episode too. In the monologue scene his display of grief and anguish is just so believable that you can't even tell he's acting. You know, I saw that when it first ran when I was in high school and I cried and I STILL tear up when I see it.
In the first season, this really was mostly the Archie Bunker Show rather than true ensemble acting. by season two Edith is a full fledged three dimensional character. Its impossible to separate O'Connors work in any given scene from Stapleton's or vice versa. So generous and comfortable are they in their scenes, each with the other, that they perform seamlessly as a single acting unit. They both move between humor and pathos so effortlessly.
Edith has shown to women the strength to power through all difficult situations! Her character and attitude shows how to be the best and not let anything bring her character down! Thank you for sharing your strength, Edith!
Edith has a good heart, even when Archie imade her feel sad for being who she was. . But for the kids, they encouraged her to speak up for herself, and she did. But in a way, it was humorous. She really did keep that home in one piece. That's why I always loved this show. She was the real reason why the show was watched so much. I think. But I do think she kept that house together.
I lived a few miles from Jean Stapleton’s summer home. I spoke with her just before she left to shoot season 5. I wish I had asked to hug Edith ! I never saw her in person again. She’s buried a block away from the high school I attended.
Edith was the embodiment of true Christian values of love, compassion and kindness with no judgement. She loved everyone and left God’s business in God’s hands. She wasn’t sanctimonious or pious. She lived her life with love and caring. She treated everyone with kindness, understanding, and respect. There was a natural genteel manner and warmth she possessed. Edith had the innocence of a child with a true wisdom of the heart. I just adored the character and Jean Stapleton.
In a further comment, you can't really put the best of Edith Bunker on a video. There are no week long videos in existence!! Jean Stapleton was simply on another level from mere mortals.
I ❤that last scene! When you truly love another person you know it because they make you a better person just by being with them.. I was blessed enough to find this person..
Edith and Louise so sweet with a special friendship that was rare in those days. Archie said “veal pee pee “. whatever it is I don’t want it lol 😂 I love when they said “I don’t want to learn nothing”😂He loved her because in those days men didn’t miss work for nothing
And to think we had to wait a whole week for the next episode. I truly miss that time in history. Maybe because I was a kid, but life did seem simpler then.
