i love this character. Usually when a character a big goofball or a fanboy they're BAD at what they're doing. OR they're REALLY good at it and aren't excited. But peralta is such a goofball AND a huge fanboy AND he's REALLY REALLY insanely good at his job.

i LOVE how they turned the usual cliches on its head in this show. Usually the "goofy main character" IS just goofy, does the job but you're prbly better off NOT having him do the job, usually it's just a "he COULD be good, but he just goofs off so much, he ends up wasting his hidden potential" ...JAKE otoh is actually AMAZING at his job. NOt just a "potential" or "that one time he DID pay attention" but genuinely all the time. Also, Not just a good detective but an excellent cop too, responsible when he needs to be. The sidekick is usually just a sidekick, the main character usually steals all the spotlight and everything is just about the main characters life, but there are PLENTY of example of jake genuinely taking interest in Boyle's interests and his life...it's AWESOME. AND what's more Boyle is actually good, by himself AND with Jake he isn't just a goofy sidekick either.

I feel like jake is everyone's big brothers, little brother and best friend all at once 👌😊
