I want a mid 2000s high definition console that’s purely capable of displaying sprites in hundreds of layers with full scaling and rotation. I loved Sega Rally so much I bought the very first available WRX in North Carolina in 2001. It’s still my daily driver. I know it wasn’t in the game but it sparked my passion for rally cars when I got it on that Christmas Day in the late 90s.
That's awesome how has the engine and "glass" transmission held up through the years? I wanted to buy an EVO in 2003 but went with a 2002 Camaro SS I still have today, it's on it's 3rd engine and 2nd T56 manual transmission at only 26,000 miles. Stock bottom end LS and boost are not a good combo IMO....

I never liked sports games but there was one Soccer game on Saturn that I absolutely loved and would play it all the time. I remember you could change the weather to make it dark and cloudy or rainy and I loved that. I really enjoyed that game can't remember what it was called tho
The 3D control pad works like magic with Powerslave! You have complete control on how fast your character pivots, which makes aiming so much easier than the standard pad.
@@drunkensailor112 it won't work in the Pal version, only NTSC USA afaik, don't know if the japanese one supports it, but I can confirm you the US PowerSlave works flawlessly with the 3D Pad. It's a game changer.

Yo I swear on life, the opening sound along with the female chanting the word Sega, if Sega were to ever have another video game system this should be the intro on the power up every single time you cut the system on. This is nothing short of perfection as far as a Sega intro goes. It’s just sad to say that, I think all of us diehard Sega fans will never get that dying wish of the company.
I'm so pleased to see you included Nights on your list, as it wasn't included in the other video. I just absolutely love it so much, in fact there's little I enjoy more than it after 25 years. What's so satisfying to me is that a lot of PSX and N64 owners never understood it, and neither did much of the gaming media (Gamesmaster, 86%, please!). The Saturn is full of some wondrous stuff. It's still my favourite machine of all time.
No offense here, I do get that the channel author is a Sega fan, but I've owned both Saturn and PS1 for many years, and I have to say that PS1 was a far better experience. The PS1 library was much bigger and more varied, 3D was far superior and the controller was more comfortable. I do not say that nobody should enjoy Saturn, I merely stated how I look at it after experiencing both over the years ;). Also, I wish you Merry Christmas and enjoy the time with your family :)!
I think the sound/soundtrack category needed another subcategory, or at least a better definition. I think music and sound design in a game should be separately considered. Enemy Zero was the clear winner. Maybe not the best game music, but the sound was the game in a way that few if any other games could aspire to.
Watching this video helped remind me why the saturn failed. It truly was a piece of shit. 😂 i cant see even 1 good game on that list. Maybe panzer dragoon?
For me DARK SAVIOR and LEGEND OF OASIS are RPG, but for me DARK SAVIOR is a better game (in the top 10 saturn games for me), but Oasis is also a great game (in my top 20). And Shining Force III for me is #1 strategy (and #1 overall saturn game). Panzer Dragoon Zwei is #2 and yes the graphics on the game are mind blowing... Dragon Force is #6... At the end, the 4 years SATURN was alive, where my best time as a gamer...
Thanks for this video. I just started to love the Saturn some days ago after tried out some more games. From now not only the Dreamcast, also the Saturn I one of my favorite consoles. Wish Sega wouldn't have messed up the release of this console.
Its driving me crazy when you include games that were not only on the PS1, but better looking and running on the PlayStation for a Saturn list. Pandemonium is a clear example of this. When you could have showcased something truly sweet like, Shinobi Legions.
@@SegaLordX okay it's not 3d but exclusive to the console. Something only a Saturn owner could enjoy. Symphony of the night had all it's glory on the PS1, not the Saturn and Shinobi Legions is a really great title. I'm also found of Skeleton Warriors on Saturn. Although it's multiplatform, I did think it ran better on Saturn.

How can you disqualify Tomb Raider,the very definition of a 3d platformer and give it to games that you clearly admit don't qualify because they are 2.5d instead of proper 3d?
Like I said in the video, it just isn't a traditional 3D platformer. It's the same way you wouldn't have Prince of Persia win a 2D platforming category. Related, but not at all the same.
The Saturn launched with a pack in game and internal memory to save games. The PS1 was 100$ cheaper but you needed to buy a game and a memory card to save any game SEGA took so much flack for the price but never fought back the narrative. You were actually saving money compared to buying a PS1 with a game and memory card
One I do disagree on is the 3d fighter choice, Last Bronx is still one of the best fighters I've ever played. I get put off with high difficulty fighters normally, but this was just so good. Sega should put it out on digital market places immediately. As in the moment I finish this comment.

In Europe the Saturn was so underrated even more than United States. I think you can see way the prices are so high for games as people are starting to realise this is such an awesome console!! It wasn't amazing with the small pal library. Amazing just in Japan. The overwhelming majority never got to Europe. Regarding RPGs, you can even say it about the SNES
The coolest thing that stood out to me watching this was that you can see the bridge between Sega's arcade scalers and what polygons would quickly become. By the time you get to the Dreamcast, polygons are totally polygons. The way the Saturn handled 3D graphics makes it feel like an essential bridge and it's so cool to see this collection of games worth praising. This video was as much an art history class as it was a collection of games you recommend.
I couldn’t disagree more. I personally didn’t like early 3D and stuck to sprite based games for the most part. I avoided the Saturn completely because while sega made some great games the company was very poorly run and honestly not to be trusted. It’s like Warner brothers. They own some great ip and employ some very talented people but management makes so many mistakes you are better off ignoring most releases
tomb raider is totally a 3d platformer. but it's not a normal platformer, it's a 3d take on the prince of persia style platformer. and i'd argue that both bug and pandemonium aren't even real 3d platformers they're just 2d platformers with some 3d gimmicks.
Tomb Raider is a weird one because it relies so heavily on interacting with the environment. Lots of jumping and climbing. I still say its more a 3D action game, though. Bug is definitely a 3D platformer, you're just moving on paths. He still moves on a 3D playfield. Pandemonium is certainly a 2.5D game, but camera and the polygon world definitely steps it up above your typical fare in that genre.

I got a video tape (VCR) with a console magazine back in the day of footage of Sega Rally Championship before the game came out. I remember just watching the footage over and over because the game looked so good. I never had a Saturn in the end but I still have the tape, lol.
I believe Sega's downfall was fate, due to their hubris. I read a story that when Sony was trying to get into home video game market they contacted Sega & a meeting was arranged to discuss a partnership/coalition. According to that story I read, the Sony reps stated the Sega reps were arrogant, condescending & mocking. The Sega reps were smirking & laughing at the Sony reps & ultimately declined any type of partnership/coalition. After suffering that rejection/experience (also the betrayal/rejection by Nintendo), Sony then decided to do it themselves. If that story is true, then I believe it was karma that Sony overtook Sega (as well as Nintendo. * The Nintendo betrayal of Sony is well known. *) as the dominant home video game company in the west. Sega & Nintendo got humbled/knocked down a peg. A common result when people get too haughty. I still love Sega & was saddened when they announced they were leaving the home console market, but their negative behavior came back/caught-up to them & bit them...Hard.

About 10 years ago i had to sell off my fairly big game collection so my family wouldnt lose our house. Back on my feet, this week I finally was able to pick up a retro console and I got a JP model 1 Saturn with 2 controllers, Panzer Dragoon 1 and Fighting Vipers for 100$. Im so excited and binge watchin Saturn vids!
Still the best channel for SEGA lovers! I recently read about the newest Polymega (have you covered it?). I’d love to know how it’s SEGA emulation works and HDTV light-gun(s)???! It’s been my dream SEGA would build an All-In-One console to play at least Master System through Dreamcast plus extra arcade boards, via original cartridge or disc or even card: a machine that’s okay anything SEGA created, with built in extra RAM, storage for 999 saves or more, tweaked to modern TV’s and again, light gun support. They’d sell phenomenally! Especially if internet was playable but NOT required!
I'm not agree about your opinion abot House of The Death... I've been waiting for this game so badly too, and even if i must admit that the first impressioon was quite a disappointment, when i started play this game, i found that everything that made me love the coin op ( beside the colour of the blood, which probably was the only real disappointing i had at the end of my experience with this game ) was there, even if with lower resolution and framerate... I can clearly say, that even if the game was not smooth as the two episodes of Virtua Cop, i played this game with my lightgun for almost two years, till my lightgun started working not accurate anymore... I loved this game so much, and i always thought that even if there were many differences in fact of performances, the atmosphere and the colours gave me at the end all of what i was needing for this conversion... But about one thing i really cannot agree with what did you said about, and it is about your opinion on the facts that this game is not been good developed as the Virtua Cop serie, which in my opinion is indeed uncorrect... The Virtua Cop serie, quality, was absolutely inferior in the coin op itself, we cannot even compare the quality of the coin op of the 2 Virtua Cop and House of the death... it is like putting on the same level Virtua Racing and Daytona Usa... it is obviously an unfair comparison, so i always took the conversion of House of the Death for Sega Saturn as the last beautifull gift Sega gave me, before to tell me goodbye... House of the Death on Sega Saturn, it is a real miracle of developments, and we must be gratefull to Sega that they complete the development of the game instead of renunce because the hardware limit of the console... I still remember so clear this day in the end of April 1998 when i finally got my copy of that game , and i'm still very emotioned for the accurate rapppresentation of those beautiful atmosphere's and colours... a little bit of disapointment for the low frame rate, and ( that yes was a real disapoint and it was not due the hardware limitations ) the green colour of the blood... this was the only real kick in my teeth i got in my House of the Dead experience and i will never redeem Sega only for this very stupid choice... but beside that, is in my opinion, for sure the best lightgun game ever released on Sega Saturn, and indeed a very beautiful gift if i consider that the console was already out of production when they finally released that MASTER PIECE !!!
I remember when the 64 came out. I almost got a Saturn but changed my mind at the last minute and went with the 64. I never regretted it but it's fun to see what I've missed out on all those years.
I really regret missing out on the Saturn back in the day. My dad was a gamer too at that time, so I didn't get a choice in what platform we got, and he went out and got a Playstation. I grew up with Final Fantasy 7.
No. I didn't look down on Saturn because of Sony's first ever console or polygonal graphics. The most 💩fact about Sega Saturn was: outside of Nippon (Nihon) & North America, there was nowhere to be found. I have yet to see a PAL Saturn IRL!😢😠🤬 Addendum: Merry Christmas, SLX & everybody🎁🎄🎅
The Grandia games have the best battle system I've ever seen in turn based RPG'S, except Grandia II for Dreamcast. Grandia II had the same time mechanic as Grandia, just slightly more polished, with Superior looking bosses to defeat. Grandia II on Dreamcast, Best battle system. Grandia for Saturn, close second. Both incredible games, Grandia II having some of the coolest bosses in the entire 32-bit generation!

I was initially wondering how both Dragon Force and Shining Force III failed to make the "Best Strategy" category, only to see why at the end. I know there will be some static for picking Shining The Holy Ark over Panzer Saga, but for me the biggest surprise was no Radiant Silvergun in the Best Shoot-em-up category.
I personnaly think that princess crown is taking..the crown (lol) concerning the beautifullest 2D game of the machine..btw good classment, it's your tastes...but man no radiant silvergun in the best shmup?!! Really?!! It's even the best of all time imo lol

Honestly my only memory of Saturn is unpleasant. I have a cousin who got a Saturn 1st day and he doesn't let us play and called us poor for only having Snes and Genesis. Few months later we got a Playstation as a Christmas gift from our grandmother with ff7, RE and Crush Bandicot. We didn't let our selfish cousin play our Playstation, serves him right I guess.

Part of me wishes that SEGA hadn't handled their console division so poorly. From the Saturn to the Dreamcast, it looked like SEGA consoles were finding their footing for me.
The Saturn's story will always be an interesting but sad one. If not for the weird management, launch and regional company in-fighting, this console would've easily been the greatest of it's generation as far as the library goes. At least channels like yours do it justice by spreading knowledge of all the gems it had.
Interesting that the best adventure games are essentially upgraded Genesis games. The same could have been said about the role playing games, but wait where is Shining Force??? Ah okay, patience.
I tend to agree with you that it was almost criminal that Sega didn't market arcade perfect editions of quite a few superscalers like Outrunners, etc. I actually bought the Mega-CD a couple of years earlier in the hope of this.
