Episode Notes:
1. All games are captured via a Mega SG.
2. If you're in the market for physical games, some of these are still quite affordable.
3. You could always tell when a developer really had some skill. Not only do most of these look great, but they also play and sound great too.
4. I had a list of about 30 games when I started. We could definitely do a part 2 and 3 to this if you guys enjoyed it.
5. I played my Genesis well into the life of the Sega Saturn. It's one of my favorite machines of all time, and its library is second to none in overall quality.
6. Like most of the best games, the majority here were system exclusive and appeared on no other hardware of the time.
7. Traveller's Tales also did Toy Story from the first video. Those people really could program well for the Genesis.
8. Shadow Dancer is one of the few games I actually prefer the console version of. The arcade was good, the Genesis version is great.
9. I was always a big fan of the Genesis hardware, even after the SNES showed up. The Genesis still had its own look and feel that stood the test of time well. Even when it was aged well past its prime, it still managed to impress.
10. A few of these games have Sega CD variants with even more content. Puggsy, Mickey Mania, and Out of this World spring to mind. There is also a Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast, but it's much less impressive there.
11. The SNES version of Virtual Bart is radically different visually in a few of the segments. If you ever get a moment, take a look at the bike segment. It's entirely flat Mode 7. The Genesis engine is far more impressive. I wanted to include a side by side, but I couldn't find my damn RGB cables before the video was due to go up.
12. I really wish there had been a Street Racer for the Sega CD. With the Genesis handling the track and the sprite scaling done by the Sega CD, it could have rivaled the Saturn version. Maybe.
13. ExoSquad pissed me off so much while capturing footage. I died countless times trying to get some good shots. I almost omitted the game entirely.
14. In the earliest stages of Ristar's creation, he was imagined as a bunny that could grab things with his ears. This lost out to Sonic's original design, but would still grow and mature into the game you see here.
15. The ending references Galaxy Force II and Super Hang On, two pseudo sprite scaling games of very different quality. The former was awful, while the latter was incredible for such an early title for the hardware.

One thing I love about this era of gaming and technology is the creativeness of developers to squeeze every last bit of power or ways to manipulate the hardware to do things it was not designed for.

It’s amazing how they cramped so much visual information into just 2mb, while I want to download a pixel retro game on my phone it’s 1gb which is basically the whole library combined. Even the retro rereleases are 80mb space harrier 2 is 500kb so not sure how bad is the extra Ui, but 80mb?

That’s why I’ve always found retro games so fascinating. It takes real genius and skill to push a console like this, and the results speak for themselves. Of course, many AAA modern developers still try to push the limits of modern consoles, but the results are not as obvious

Living through these times as a child = priceless. Sega attracted me from day one. Genesis is an incredible console. Parents purchased the Altered Beast package for me Christmas of release. Ripping open the wrapping and seeing the box for the first time in hand was something I will never forget. I sold everything years later as a teen (bad move) but got everything back and then some as an adult. I own all Genesis models and a much larger amount of physical games. Emulation is cool indeed but putting in the cartridge in the real hardware again = priceless. Great video.

That Motorola X68000 CPU was an absolute beast. It was the heart and soul of Capcom CPS1&2, the Sharp X68000, the NeoGeo, the Genesis, and a bunch of other arcade machines. Even with the SNES's 7 different modes, the Genesis could rival all of their special effects with the creativity of the developers

Lol Creativity and Seven Modes, seems like dumb advertisement really works on you. The "7 Modes" of the SNES are nothing special. Every system can do it, heck Yuji Naka once showed the background scaling and rotation (and that's really that "Mode 7" is) working on the Master System. The sole difference was that the SNES had those 7 different effects built into its horrendous CPU, while on every other System you had to program them in software, but that's not really much of a challenge.

@@maroon9273 Except that pretty much all the hardware came from american companies. Neither the 68000, nor the Z80 are japanese, since Motorola and Zilog were american companies. Same with for example the CPUs in the NES (based on MOS Technologies 6502), the SNES (WDC 65C816) or PC Engine (WDC 65C02). MOS Technologies and Western Design Center were of course also american. MSX also ran on the Z80 as did a ton of other computers back then. The japanese actually knew nothing about Microprocessors themselves. All they did was mostly licensing the CPUs and slap their own label on it (another example is the NEC VR4300 in the N64, it's actually the R4200 from MIPS Technologies). Same is true with GPUs, were most came from Texas Instruments back then. It was even the same with the Arcade Hardware. For their Model 2 platform, Sega licensed a Flight Simulator GPU developed by GE Aerospace which originally were used by Lockheed Martin in Flight Simulators for Pilots.

And man, after I switched it on and that title screen and the awesome music was done, I just called my friend next door to have a look at this. We were mostly into PC gaming at that time, but heck: after he saw it as well, we dove into that game and enjoyed the heck out of it. Also played through the first Streets of Rage in coop on that very same day. I won't forget the impression this console made on us at that time, so long after it had been out of the market. Hi SEGA LORD X. Just to let you know, I'm from the UK and we do snooker..lol..and we love it too. It IS the very hardest billiards type game there is, period! It's also played on a 12 ft table. I think its the only thing us Brits do BIGGER than how America does things! The bottom line of this game is- your first shot, is ALWAYS, to hit a red ball first, when you come to the table. Go for RED first, if there are any left to play. The are worth 1 point every time you pot one and are the key to accessing going for the colour balls next shot. The colour balls are valued as such: Yellow= 2pts Green= 3pts Brown= 4pts Blue= 5pts Pink= 6 pts.....and... Black= 7pts So while there are still red balls on the table, take any colour ball you like after potting your red. Obviously, aim for the highest value colour you can comfortably sink. You MUST go for a COLOUR, everytime you pot a RED and you must go for a RED again, after potting a COLOUR; so you alternate all the time. The general idea is to pot as many RED, then COLOUR balls, consecutively and rack up a score as you go (this is called a BREAK). The higher the break, the more awesome your play was. Ultimately, your job is to score more points than your opponent however. The BREAK, means little other than showing off your ability. After you have potted ALL the REDS, you must pot the colours in order of point value (as above). The very best way to learn is to watch some snooker matches on RU-vid, or on the BBC, when tournaments come around (usually Jan/April). This game is kind of like Pool, but with a very strong CHESS element throw in. Its highly strategic and you really need to have an incredibly high level of skill. Its WAY harder than American Pool, which is damn easy by comparison. Once you throw the element of "SNOOKER'S" into the game (meaning putting your opponent in an awkward position where they cannot easily hit the object ball), the game becomes extremely tactical. Your first thought is always to try to score as many points as the situation will allow (because highest score determines the winner) but if scoring is not possible, try to snooker your opponent, to make their next shot a tough one. Thats the "Adam's" explanation for you, I really hope it helped...just incase you want to play REAL snooker, or if you just wanna play that Genesis version properly..😉

The SNES CPU really seemed to be too slow in retrospect because every time it did anything remotely complex you'd need a helper-chip Eg. even launch titles like Pilotwings needed on cart assistance. To this day anyone can just start coding for the Genesis directly rather than trying to work out which specific type of cart hardware your SNES homebrew needs to run it.

9:06 I think the on screen color limit of the Genesis getting dogged was more a later day thing which was three fold, one was the competition aspect arising with the SNES's 256 colors, secondly was the increase in multiplatform game development which often had the Genesis versions looking much worse in comparison, and thirdly the last of the arcade ports were hardest color-wise for the oldest 16-bit console to approximate. Mainly you got to look at the earlier titles and or the exclusives to see the Sega graphics that have the strongest grasp of the four palette graphics setup. When the pixel artists understand how to get the most out of any platform's palette restrictions the result is always better. It's much like the hardware chiptune aspect where you really have to know what you're doing to get the best results.

I'm suprise tempo was never ported to the genesis after seeing ristar pulling off bright colors. Missed opportunity and genesis was great with software graphics. Had snes added dma on its gpu, it would've been neck and neck with the genesis in software graphics. Which snes was lacking.

Thanks for this video, I have played a lot of these games but not to the visually impressive parts, and now I'm going to revisit too many to list. i really wanted to like Exo Squad too, because I loved the show as a kid. I remember it being as adult and well written as X-Men, and it continued that tradition of forward moving narrative kids cartoons based on fighting. But it was some deep sci fi too, the main conflict was a literal slave rebellion, aliens who were genetically created to be that and who got sick of it, the neosapiens, and it dealt with the ethical and moral implications more deeply than you'd expect form a show made to sell a toy line. Game was a huge letdown, especially after the X Men genesis games were pretty darn good for the time.

You say that playing Ranger-X you would just run back & forth to see the 3D effects in motion. I think that's funny because I would do the exact same thing with various titles. I remember playing Doom for the very first time & it blew my mind. Some games used to have that "WOW!" factor, something I feel is lost in modern games because at this point we've seen it all. Top 10 "WOW!" factor moments on any console would make an interesting video I think?

nice long video... i did prefer the snes overall for the color palette and mode7 fx, but some devs could pull off feats on the genesis. only thing i was let down on is that later in the genesis life span, music and sound fx for games... were horrible. if only yuzo koshiro could have done the music for EVERY game lol right? but i think it was that GEMS sound engine or whatever that was responsible for the less than stellar sound in many later games. then again, the snes had some turds as well with muted sounding music and sound fx that sounded like they were recorded in a pringles can lol. EA games on genesis were the most notorious for grating sound, high pitched fx and music that was just horrid. dark castle is an example and might & magic 2 music. shudder.

@ArneChristianRosenfeldt
@ArneChristianRosenfeldt Год назад
But is there any trick with scaling? It looks to me like those games scale using the CPU, but then cache all scales. The last instance of a sprite marks its cache as garbage going up the scales. maybe they use a tool to always max out memory usage, sprite count, and CPU usage.

I don't know how many different ways you can talk about the same games over and over and over but. I don't see your channel lasting very long bro. I mean how many different ways can you say you love a game and the way it looks the system how many things can you really say about it that you really haven't already said At this point you're just rehashing the same videos over and over again just trying to add new fancy words. And different video effects either way you hash it down bro it's still the same system in games.

I noticed Super Thunderblade was missing in this video entirely? No doubt it's a terrible conversion with awful play mechanics but it was late 1988 and a launch title at that and apart of me thinks it could maybe count as passing for an early scaler on the system but I respect your decision to leave it out. Only Galaxy Force II can be worse.

Some of the greatest games of all time or top 10 games Start with having the best graphics. Gameplay will be remembered. But if the graphics is poor what’s memorable .! The total package of stunning graphics , good gameplay with variety & good storytelling length. When making an absolute , I mean ABSOLUTLE TOP TEN list, Greatest graphics have to push on top of great gameplay Take donkey king for instance ..! It’s graphics , presentation & brand is way better than its gameplay…! I tried to stick with it.! But I saw through its colorful gloss .!! It was not good in the gameplay department but fans was blinded by the graphics to even see that ..! They will fight you to death that the gameplay in donkey kong is actually good.. Take starfox…. It’s enjoyable because the presentation bleeds into the graphics for a beautiful package .! But there isn’t a lot there to talk about in the gameplay department. It’s afterBurner very much slowed down & given story progressive gameplay & presentation and 3d esq graphics .. Maybe my expectations are always too high …!! I loved metal gear solid as one of the greatest video games ever.!! But playing it I always wondered.! Why they hell I couldn’t drag the person I have in a choke hold …. Everything about the game was perfect and it was just missing that, but it’s still to me one of the greatest games ever made .!! My taste for variety was so high at a young age, a lot of games people love and revere I played and wanted to throw them away .!! A reason why I got deep into sports sims from 2k Nfl2k5 & college hoops Games like mvp baseball. The amount of depth…in every aspect running a franchise , contracts , gameplay that have different results every play,. Years and years of drafting, training, stats changing . Wild amount of variety and longevity.

I had a genesis in its heyday and my next door neighbor back in '93 had Hard Drivin' for it. I played it a lot cause we only had like 10 games between us but i have to say, that game is a massive turd and ran like a slideshow. i'm so surprised to see it mentioned here as 'impressive' by any stretch of the imagination. I would've loved to see you talk about Shinobi III, Sonic 3& Knuckles, Steel Empire, X-Men 2, Outrunners or any of the 3d Sega arcade titles like Space Harrier or Super Thunder Blade. Great video series, definitely gave me a few games to track down!

Great video as usual :)! I can't disagree that both Vector Man and Batman & Robin looked impressive on the hardware, but I could never get into them. Vector Man had some of the most annoying sound effects I've ever heard and the latter when compared to the SNES version had, to me, a very boring gameplay. Batman & Robin on Genesis reminded me of the Batman game on NES. It looked incredible, pushing NES to it's very limits, but had Batman running around shooting everything like Rambo.

I used to absolutely adore the Fantasy Zone series, both on the MS and MD. You've got a great video here, although I'd have given notable mentions to Probotector, Alien Soldier, Flashback, Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter 2 to name a few. Many of them were as impressive as Saturn games. I'm also pleased to see you included Zero Tolerance. It would have been sacrilege to miss it out.

13:35 Never played Bimini Run bitd but what impresses me is how well it approximates a 3D space using 2D graphics, other than Miracle Warriors on SMS I haven't seen too many engines like that. Usually you get the impression of movement from these 3D approximate games but typically you never reach any of those distant horizons like you can in BR.

This is why i always have thought that they really cut console life spans too short. They seriously should have kept making Snes and Genesis games for another 5 years. Imagine how many more great games we could have got ha. Always was kind of disappointed that 32bit didnt really keep the pixel style games and started making very rough 3d style games, that have not aged NEARLY as well as the 16bit 2d games have. But i think 32bit games done in more pixel art form would have looked super cool, and aged well also. The few that they made are awesome.
