YES. IMHO: The cheaper places are the only way to go for me. You get to a point in age and experience where you realize you're only sleeping resting or using the bathroom and saving a small fortune by being frugal is the only intelligent way to go. I recently had a friend go to the Maldives for under $40 a night. He snorkeled and explored the very same beautiful waters that the people paying $4000 a night enjoyed. It took me a long time to figure out to be smart with my money especially on travel. Thank you for your excellent videos. They are well produced, quite enjoyable and highly instructive.❤️

Ditto to all the replys, especially the 40 dollars a nite and taking the train vs walking. Ernest.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment and taking the time to share your thoughts! I agree - sometimes a splurge is really wonderful (although I imagine what I think is a splurge is still not really to many haha) and sometimes a $35 a night B&B is perfect. The hotel is not the purpose of the trip, but a really bad one can also be a downer on the experience. Luckily, I haven't had that experience in a while!

Laura: A new awareness. (for me at least). When I watch excellent RU-vid's like yours it allows me to fairly confidently "rule in" or "rule out" places I want to go as a high priority. For example, having been to Italy several times I didn't realize how much more of it I want to visit until I saw your videos. However, and perhaps more importantly, the high quality travel RU-vid's of today I think are amazingly beneficial to us in that it's helping me "rule out" more places than I ever imagined ! The amount of financial savings almost lost and the inevitable frustration of not loving a trip is all avoided thanks to your good work. I use to think I had this outrageously long bucket list but you have helped me "prune" it considerably. 🙏

Really enjoyed the video, having today booked 4 nights in Monterosso for September, and having previously enjoyed a wonderful few days in Rapallo. Am now watching the individual videos for the area too, lovely to see a friendly informative style which is a lot more about “look at this!” rather than the “look at me!” style of some of the other blogs I’ve seen on the area. Thanks Laura! PS Also great to see content from a solo traveller like me, all the other videos I’ve seen are from couples or families

Wonderful. Thank you. This was my 'introduction' to your channel and I was simply impressed. Your style of travel is very much like my own: I'm not independently wealthy, so I have to balance the 'finer' places and moments of travel with the more practical and cost-effective. I'll often stay in a 5-Star Hotel one night and an austere Hostel the next. Sometimes, the more 'practical' prove to be just as magical as the more expensive. You use the same 'booking' website that I use for Hotels, as well. I also like the way you are warm and charming, but not all 'glamorous' and making it all about 'you' like an Instagram influencer. Don't worry though, you 'influenced' me plenty with informative, practical, and inspiring content and presentation. Grazie!

Thanks so much for your kind words, James. I'm so glad you liked the video and hope you'll enjoy several others in the future. I agree - sometimes those practical places offer things (usually amazingly kind local people running them) that you just don't get at the "finer" places. Happy travels!

I needed a place to stay at the last minute in London. It was the middle of summer, Saturday, and all I could get was a room that was literally the size of a jail cell for about $100. And this was back in 1999.

Prices in London are insane. I once stayed in a room that was £80 near King's Cross and it had no windows and you had to get onto the bed from the middle because it was squeezed between the wall on either side. 🤣

Hello Laura, thanks for doing videos on this region, looks like you've explored alot of the area. I like your style of videos, and that you show more of the reality of the place and not just the postcard view, and all food. I'm going at the end of October to this area for 2 days, as part of a 2 week Italian vacation to other regions. I'm trying to decide if I should stay in Santa Margherita Ligure or Cinque Terre, I'm taking the train there and back from Milan. I know everyone raves about the Cinque Terre, but I'm trying to understand what the appeal is. Is it just from doing the hikes? I'm sure the views are much more magnificent in person. The towns look somewhat rough and ramshackle, and I understand things might be closed at the end of October. I'd rather go when it's cooler in October or April when you went, being in Italy when it's 90 degrees isn't very fun, not sure why it's jammed in the high heat. I guess Santa Margherita Ligure looks like it has much nicer ornate architecture and what I imagine a "Riviera" place on the ocean. I've traveled in Italy 2 times before but not to this region yet. Also would it be possible to bike from Santa Margherita Ligure to Portofino? I enjoy biking more than walking long distances personally.

Really pleased I found your channel. We are planning a 2 month trip from the uk this May to June, travelling mostly by train, and basing ourselves in 3 main locations, Andalusia, Italy and Norway. I noticed an option of getting from Spain to Italy is a ferry from Barca to Genoa. We was planning on spending most of our time in Tuscany, but now are looking at splitting between Tuscany and Genoa and the Rivera thanks to your channel! Would you say 2 nights in Genoa, followed by 2 nights in the riviera, and then 2 nights in the cinque terre would be enough, or too rushed? We would then plan to spend a week in Tuscany where we would probably stay in one location to balance out the trip slightly. Also really looking forward to watching your reports on Spain. Cadiz and Ronda are two locations we are planning to visit and stay!

Ciao Laura e grazie mille for your warm style and fantastic information. Italy has my heart too, I have been many times over the years but always to Milan, Florence and Venice. This year I am planning a 2-week trip this October. I will be in Israel visiting family so my plan is to fly from Israel to the airport in Nice and take the train to Bordighera (rent an air bnb) as a home base and take day trips from there. I am an active senior but feel I need a base to go and return to. Question? Can I take those day trips on a bus or train or do I need to rent a car? Thanks for any wisdom you can offer.

Hello Laura thank you for such an informative blog! It has been nine months since you posted, so I trust that you find my message. We are planning a trip in late November to London, Paris, Côte d’Azur and the Italian Rivera, spending about three months. Because we are researching where to live permanently, I don’t want to miss any crevice lol. Since the Rivera will be our last leg of the trip with so many seaside towns to explore, where do you consider to be the best base on the entire Italian Rivera, where a hotel is very affordable to allow an overnight stay in one the other towns. We want to end our search near Nice International Airport for the flight back home. Thanks so much for your input. Safe travels…

Thank you. I’ve planned various Italy itinerary’s trying to combine Tuscany and coastal areas. Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia, Isola D’Elba! The Italian Riviera is exactly what I was searching for this trip. Would you put Florence in the front or end of a trip such as featured in this video? It would be nice to end with a few days in Genoa before returning back to the USA.

Any recommendations on an itinerary for 4 days? Trying to sneak this area in between Rome and Paris. Probably would look like flying into Genoa on Morning 1 and flying out on morning 5. Staying in one town that is easy to access the others by ferry or train, or staying in two different towns. What would you recommend. Love the channel!

What's your thought of seeing from the water by motorboat?

ooo so difficult. I think of Camogli a lot as one of my favorite beach towns in Italy. It's so small and the restaurants were so great and then you can hike right from town into the peninsula or you can hop on a ferry easily to San Fruttuoso. So that would be my pick, but if you want a bigger town I think Rapallo or Santa Margarita Ligure are probably better options.

Hi Laura, I'm planning to go to Italy in in July and my first stop will be Milano. I would like to go on a day trip from Milan to Genoa, Saint Margherita Lingure, Portofino then back to Milan by the end of the day. Can you advise what are the best transportation options ( money and time wise) to use?
@Luigi-uj5ml
@Luigi-uj5ml 7 месяцев назад
Intercity train from Milan Centrale to Genoa, then regional train from Genova Piazza (del) Principe or from Genova Brignole* to Santa Margherita Ligure. To move between Santa Margherita and Portofino (up to San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte) you can take the ferry (boat) or, up to Portofino only, the bus at an inflated fare for non-residents 782 (ex 82). From San Fruttuoso you can then go to Camogli by boat and from there take a train to Genoa and Milan. *Although it takes its name from the nearby square where the old station was located, it is officially called Brignole without the term "Piazza"

Hello. I want to fly to the Italian Riviera from Nice next summer starting July 1st. I will fly into Genoa from Nice. I was thinking about getting a hotel room in Genoa and pay for a 7 day stay and use those 7 days to travel to La Riviera and Cinque Terre. I don't mind paying additional days at any of the cities in either La Riviera or in Cinque Terre. Your thoughts? Money is not an issue and I would welcome your suggestions.

I used a backpack and I always use a backpack. I don't own a suitcase but I really think it's personal preference. The Italian Riviera (and many coastal areas in Italy) have lots of hills, stairs, and cobbled streets. For me, that is no place for a rolling suitcase. Every year I consider switching from backpack to suitcase and every year I'm glad I didn't. Many of my friends swear by their suitcases and carrying it up and down stairs or along uneven ground doesn't bother them one bit. Use whatever suits your travel style best!
