Kid was a beast at Norco playing under his Dad. Broke several records. He was always fun to watch at Stanford. Old School ground and pound. Wont see much of this style of player with all the rule changes. Watched him run over the USC at the coliseum his heisman campaign year. He was robbed.

Totally should have won the Heisman that year. Ingram was running behind future NFL offensive lineman and was arguably the second best running back on his own team (Trent Richardson)

Man quit it, Toby was a great runningback but he played in the weak pac 12. Ingram played in toughest conference in college football.

Rare back. Has an athletic mind body connection that makes him improve. His Yards Per Carry for the Vikes kept going up each year (except when AP came back) all the way to nearly 8 YPC. Gets a load of yards after contact and most in the second half. Jags is a head scratcher because he should at least be a 4.9 YPC 1,400 yard back over the course of a season. He is bigger, faster, stronger and more explosive (38 inch vertical) than Yeldon but doesn't start. The continual preseason injury thing is a shoulder shrugger since he didn't get more carries than he had with the Vikes. I hope he gets as indignant as he did his last year in Minnesota before he gets too old. Would love to see two years of top level TG!

I don't know why but in college he looked slower than he does in the NFL.. he's not known for being a speed HB but when he played for the Vikings I definitely saw less hip stiffness in cutting and he was quicker to the hole than he is here. His power and leg strength is still in this clip, however.

and the same reason that nobody thinks he can be a feature back, people are suggesting drafting another runningback since Adrian Peterson is hurt. Gerhart has performed well in his absence, over 100 yards yesterday on 11 carries, and 2 90 yard games when Peterson was out with the ankle sprain. He might not be as good as Adrian Peterson but he can be good like a Michael Turner type, at worse Shonn Greene. He ran a 4.53 at 230 pounds and has a great initial burst, and he can catch

watch what he looked like last year, and the games he filled in for Peterson, he actually looked better as a pro, Stanford runs a lot of power plays designed to get 5 yards (which is why Gerhart has a lot of runs on here than are 10 to 15) with more variety in play calling in the pros he looked much quicker and faster, plus he took the brace off of his knee, which probably slowed him down when cutting

I only recall Gerhart getting lit up once in college football, it was a pitch that was snufed out by Rey Malauga and Taylor Mays, they both hit him at the same time. They couldn't get a good hit on him the rest of the game and he was only 1 of 2 players to rush for 100+ yards against that USC defense who had 10 players drafted into the NFL. notice how most of his runs defenders only get their hands on him because hes got great acceleration
@dwid1984
@dwid1984 14 лет назад
personally I don't see him falling out of the 2nd. He should be a first round pick but everyone is thinking he is going to have a bad combine, but he ran a 4.48 out of high school and recently timed at 4.43, so the lowest he will run is 4.5 electronically which should solidify a 1st round pick. Last combine none of the backs ran faster than a 4.45, Beanie Wells rans a 4.59 and Moreno ran a 4.62
@warmon1968
@warmon1968 14 лет назад
I would compare him to like say a Brandon Jacobs type running back, big and bruising yet a bit quicker. Seems like a solid pick for the Vikes.
@dwid1984
@dwid1984 14 лет назад
Even Shonne Green didn't fall past the 3rd round despite having a poor combine . You do realize Gerhart won the Doak Walker award which is for nation's BEST halfback right?
@dwid1984
@dwid1984 14 лет назад
how is he not in the top 3? the only person you can put ahead of him is CJ Spiller and that is because Spiller is an all purpose threat. Toby Gerhart is amazing, has great vision, agility, burst to get through the hole, just won the Doak Walker award (nations BEST runningback) and will run in the 4.45-4.55 range. He has similar skillsets to Beanie Wells or Knowshon Moreno, the two top prospects from last year, so why wouldn't he be in the top 3?

yes he does receive double coverage being the main threat on the dolphins, most team's number 1 receiver get double teamed, do you know what double coverage is? its a corner with a safety over the top. Bess gets those little short routes underneath. Im sorry, I wasn't aware 240 equaled 807 yards, okay take 100 yards away and say he had a 140 yard performance, he would still be on pace for 1,000 yards

lets see, 6 backs injured before Hillis started and ran over the Jets, a team Mangini coached. Traded to the Browns for Brady Quinn (after siting on the bench in 09 to Moreno who had no game changing ability). Danny Woodhead, picked up by....Mangini, no one on the new staff cared for him having the best preseason rushing performance since 95. Bellicheck grabbed him up, one of the few coaches that has the balls to play white players at black positions.
@dwid1984
@dwid1984 13 лет назад
this is despite the fact 25 states had whites as leading rushers, most had good/great measurables to go along with that. Stanford was the only team to give Gerhart a scholarship as a tailback, others wanted him as a fullback, usc wanted him as a fullback. Peyton Hillis was a tailback in college, rushing for 2,000+ yards 10 ypc his senior year, teams only wanted him as a fullback. They played him at every position besides tailback. Don't give me the McFadden/Jones cuz other schools couldve offerd

oh you meant Hartline, yeah hes just on pace for 1k. Calvin Johnson had 1 td for most of the season as well, lets write him off too! Hartline isn't the best example but its the most recent. There are better Whites buried on the depth chart, like Riley Cooper, who averaged 70 yards per game when starting due to injuries, he will be starting this week, hopefuly Foles can do something. And if you haven't noticed in Miami, Tannehill hit the rookie wall good while ago, so not totally Hartline's fault

@thatguy9328 Hey I totaly agree. I didnt dis agree at first, I just thought Chester Was Really good too. He went out there to maybe start but now Chesters out there to back up Forte. Which realy pisses me off (alot). I think he still has the potential to be a good Tail back. But back to minnesota all we really need to do is get Peterson to not drop the ball. Like he did in the playoffs (reminds me of Dickerson alot too).

@Compasss not to mention 50 runs over 10 yards, his initial burst is the best, thats not a fullback or short yardage type of guy. He runs exactly like Corey Dillon , go look up his highlights, he had a good career in the NFL, at halfback. Gerhart is nothing like a fullback, he has never blocked in his entire life, except in pass protection for his quarterback , which every halfback does.
@dwid1984
@dwid1984 14 лет назад
@LiamMJackson Hillis and Gerhart are very different, Hillis has a kamikaze/blasting style, but he is 250, and still manages to average 4 to 5 ypc with this style. Hillis is more apt to take guys head on with a big collison, while Gerhart takes more angles and runs slyly off of blockers hips and never seems to get lit-up. Gerhart still lowers his shoulders a millisecond before contact.
@dwid1984
@dwid1984 14 лет назад
what makes me think he wont have a bad combine? because he was timed at 4.43 recently which wouldn't trasnlate to any slower than 4.55 electronically. Which is plenty of speed for a power back. Green ran high 4.6- low 4.7 range I believe
@dwid1984
@dwid1984 13 лет назад
then Mangini finally had the balls to pick him up and use him after Hardesty was injured, Mangini was also the guy who brought Woodhead in but he tore his knee. Ryan got rid of him for Clowney

@funkybjorn11 I sure will. Like I always say, the tape doesn't lie. The draft experts can make up all the things they want, but I saw him do well when given the carries. He had a longer run than C.J. Spiller who was supposed to be a "speedster" and "homerun threat". He averaged almost a full yard more per carry than Jahvid Best, another guy who supposed to be better, Best had 3.2 ypc on 171 carries. The thing is both of those backs got every chance to start unlike Toby
@dwid1984
@dwid1984 13 лет назад
with 32 teams and only 1 white starter (Woodhead is a situational 3rd down back) then what do you call the position. There are a few in college like Zach Line (highest rushing total at SMU since Eric Dickerson), Sam McGuffie (1200 from scrimmage last year 9 tds), JJ Di Luigi (1346 yards from scrimmage 9 tds). Rex Burkhead with 1100 yards from scrimmage and 7 tds while sharing time. Thats 4 guys out of 120 FBS teams. There are more black head coaches in college football.

Tolbert, was fatter and slower than Heester, and barely did squat at Coastal Carolina, yet he gets to run the ball while the guy who led LSU to a national championship is blocking for him, despite being undersized. yeah, Ole Miss and USC wanted Cali's ALL TIME LEADING RUSHER to play fullback, his numbers are 3rd in the nation for high school. EVER, he ran a hand timed 4.48 out of high school (not the same electronic, usually about a tenth off, evident by his 4.55 at the combine)

Perhaps he could wind up like Michael Turner who sat behind Ladanian Tomilson, Gerhart has received the bulk of his carries when Peterson missed games and has done well, so yeah he hasn't been used as a 3rd round back or the "Chester Taylor role" as was promised when drafted, as long as he is there, I don't see harm in giving him close to 100 carries next season and reduce Peterson's workload. They should try to keep Peterson's career going as long as possible, he already broke 2k

The only thing that I dislike is him going to the NFL and playing for the Viking's, stuck behind a running back that has all the tools that he has, and more. Sure, he'll get playing time, but when Peterson leaves, or gets hurt. In a plain out comparison of athleticism, Peterson is faster, and knows how to use his strength better.
@dwid1984
@dwid1984 13 лет назад
@JDunks04 Thats the point, Toby WAS the superstar back for his draft but downgraded cuz of skin color. He was the only one who had the tools to be a top 10 workhorse back in the league coming off a monster season. The guys b4 him, 2 were 3rd down scatbacks, Matthews a smaller version of Gerhart with a bigger injury history in a weaker conference. They couldve picked Toby.... Hes better than Moreno and Wells who went in the first and better than Ingram who was the 1st back taken this year

My bad on the USC thing thought that was the year before. Either way the total schedule that they had doesn't compete with that of an SEC school. Look at when Oregon played LSU for their opener last year. What happened? 40-27. Who has won 6 strait national titles and most likely going to win the 7th. The SEC. The talent across the board is just better and throwing Toby in that would result in him playing fullback and getting goaline carries.

I mean, they should be rushing the ball more to keep things easier on Ponder. They rushed less than 500 times, the Texans did it like 540 times last year, Arian Foster got 350 carries and Justin Forset and Ben Tate combined for 120 carries, so even if Peterson still wants 300+ carries there is still room for 100+ carries. Gerhart is better than the both of those, better receiving skills and pass blocking. His career stats are 1022 rushing 3 tds 512 yards receiving 3 tds,

Gerhart is stuck behind the best back in the NFL in Adrian Peterson, Every time Peterson has missed time Gerhart has put up good numbers, those worthy of a starter. Its odd how every White back winds up on a team with a "star back". The first was Brian Leonard, ran a 4.49, just happened to be drafted to ST Louis when Steven Jackson in his prime, ppl have forgotten what he is capable of. Jacob Hester drafted to Chargers with LT, LT declines they draft Matthews, Matthews injured they play Tolbert

Hillis played fullback because he wasn't OFFERED any scholarships as a runningback out of high school so he chose Arkansas, and he played everything but rb, fb,wr, te, despite having similar production/size and speed to Beanie Wells, he was considered a fullback out of high school. Google, Heisman candidate or blocking back. @dwid1984 bills neeeded a back, they took Spiller, he sucked last year, Chargers needed a back, took Matthews who is good but couldn't stay healthy in the Wac, Surprised he spent most of the year injured. Saints needed one but waited til this year to draft someone smaller and slower. Texans traded back instead of picking, got Ben Tate who was avg, luckily they had Arian Foster, UDFA. It took SIX backs to get injured for Hillis to get a shot at tailback, then benched after proving himself.

Arian Foster is great but by no means the best back. Adrian Peterson is. Foster plays for the Texans who have a great zone blocking scheme under coach Kubiak, who learned from Shanahan with the Broncos, they were able to get 1k out of no name guys like Olandis Gary. Tennesee fans didn't even want Foster to keep starting which shows their intelligence, they wanted him gone so Hardesty could play because they said he was too slow (4.6)

how can he do anything if he is behind Adrian Peterson? Peterson is having a CAREER YEAR. Why draft a back that you won't use? Toby Gerhart needs to go to another team. He isn't going to get playing time behind Adrian Peterson in Minnesota. Toby is too good of a player to be wasting away on the bench. 85gioking Hillis will be a beast for the Giants and regain his form, he looked decent last year when he didn't even look in football shape, they got him off the street and he had been out of football, now they have signed him and he has an entire offseason.
