my uncle fought in the Falklands he was a royal engineer and was tasked with demolishing Argentinian defences and mine fields . he said one of the main reasons we won was we had the semi auto FAL but the Argentinian forces had the full auto version and they would shoot full auto all the time from so far away the rounds would fly way above his head he said he felt confident enougth to just stand up while under fire because they couldn't hit the moon from 3ft away let alone hit a still target from 500 to 600ft . our boys are trained to be marksmen they would take time aiming shots . he was tasked with blowing up a weapon and ammo storage site but got a chance to piss about with some of the Argentinian weapons unloading a few mags into a hill on full auto he said the recoil and muzzle climb was Insane . another funny story he told me was his friend getting sent home because his mum jokingly asked him to bring a penguin back being the dumbass he is he tried to grab a penguin not realising they actually have really sharp beaks . the penguin sliced his arm open from elbow to wrist and cut so deep it severed the tendons in his arm . he got discharged because he could no longer hold a gun . another tail was he got called to rescue an Argentinian who had gone for a piss in the night and stumbled into the middle of a mine field. realising his mistake he sat down and waited till morning only to find out his position had been captured in the early hours of the morning and he was now surrounded by amused brits . my uncle had to clear a path through the minefield so he could get out and be captured

Reminds me of the Rhodesian bush war. The Rhodesians captured quite a few enemy AKs and noticed the range on the rear sight dialed to the max on most of them. Upon capturing an enemy fighter, they asked why they would do that, the answer being they didn't know what the range dial does and simply thought it would make the rifles shoot harder.

Another thing to note about the FAL in particular, FN was working closely with the British to chamber it in an intermediate cartridge after they reviewed captured STG44 rifles in 8mm Kurz. But because of NATO agreement and the US refusing to step down from .30-06 / .308 chamberings, the FAL and G3 ended up using larger calibers then they were originally intended which increased recoil and weapon vibrations. Makes you wonder what could have been with a FAL / G3 in something like 6.5mm Swedish or .280 British.

The reason the FAL hasn't had any major dmr/sniper role is the inherent imprecision of it's locking system. The G3 and the M14 both have 2 contact points with the trunion (for the G3, it has 2 rollers and for the M14, 2 locking lugs) while the FAL only has one (on the back of the bolt where it locks into, right behind the magazine). This provides the G3 and the M14 a more reliable and consistent locking setup due to requiring 2 contact points to be "insinc" with one another instead of only requiring one. The consistency of the bolt lockup and consequently. the time the bolt carrier can start moving (G3)/the bolt carrier can start rotating the bolt (M14) affects the time the cartrige remains fully locked into the chamber as well as the exact horizontal location of the cartrige. The more reliable said locking system is, the smaller the diferences between each shot become, thus more accurate/precise (there's a diference between the two, but I don't care). There are upsides and downsides to each system, for example: The G3's roller delayed blowback is extremely simple (in terms of the number of actual moving parts) and is condusive to cheap and easy to manufacture recievers while also being the most potentially accurate operating system due to the small impact it leaves on the harmonics of the reciever when shot (mainting a stable barrel). The M14 and FAL on the other hand, are both gas operated which allows for finer tuning of the recoil impulse felt and are much cleaner operating systems (leaving all the gases in the gas tube), the difference between the two is that the M14 is more potentially accurate while the FAL is easier to clean and harder to induce mud and dirt into the locking recesses.

Good analysis, but don't forget the other drawback of the FAL as a precision/DMR weapon, namely its clam-shell receiver design, which made mounting a scope and holding a decent zero quite difficult. The British eventually came up with the 4x fixed power "Sight Unit, Infantry, Trilux" (only the British could come up with such a name!), and a solid mount at the rear of the receiver behind the cover - but by that time, the die was cast and the FAL wasn't known as a good sniping weapon. Eventually, the technical challenge was solved by DSA of the U.S.A., one of the world's existing makers of the rifles in the 21st century... but by that time, the world's militaries had moved on to other designs. Of the three designs, G3/FAL/M14, the M-14 is generally the most-accurate, thanks mostly to its superb trigger and iron sights, and the fact that the platform accepts an optic reasonably well. The U.S. Army used an accurized version with a scope as its standard issue sniper weapon during the Vietnam War, and Staff Sergeant Bert Waldron become the top-scoring sniper in U.S. military history using one until Navy SEAL CPO Chris Kyle broke his record in Iraq during the GWOT. G3s can be made into excellent precision weapons, once you dump a bunch of time and $ into fixing its drawbacks, such as the abysmal factory trigger, inadequate precision stock, poor ergonomics, etc. They are also notorious for destroying scopes, since their recoil impulse isn't friendly to optics, and until P-rails were fitted, you needed a special claw mount, too. Even those shifted under recoil until a lug was installed. But the Bundeswehr and other forces used them in Afghanistan with good results. The FN FAL comes in last for the reasons mentioned. It is too bad, really, because there's nothing wrong with the barrels on the rifles, which are capable of very fine accuracy. The factory iron sights, OEM trigger and the difficulty in using an optic hold it back. British forces in the Falklands War turned captured scoped FALs on their former owners to good effect, according to reports. The Argentines used German optics, and had apparently solved the shifting mount problem somehow. Maybe their snipers just re-zeroed after servicing their weapons... None of these Cold War-era weapons was ideal for use with an optic, since all came from an era in which optics on combat rifles were something of a rarity. Work-arounds and expedient solutions were found, but a modern platform such as the SR-25 is much easier to use thanks to its up-to-date ergonomics and other modern enhancements. Time marches on, right?

I carried the SLR (the improved UK version of FAL - reciprocating charging that folded on release and sand clearing cuts on the bolt carrier) for a few years before the L85 was issued - it wasnt as accurate as the later issued L85 but accurate enough - and unlike the L85, it was reliable in all conditions and things didnt break and fall off of it, and in my opinion it was a more solidly built than a G3 but with 1 weakness - the rear sights and optic mounting to the top slide, the largest thing I carried on the SLR was the humungous IWS image intensifier sight - it wasnt fun to hump around- the downfall is the rear sight is mounted on the butt, and it was common knowledge that breaking the weapon open to clean it risked a shift in zero slightly after reassembly - for this reason it was common practice during the lead up to shooting competitions for soldiers not to fully strip the SLR for cleaning but instead to clean as best you can without breaking the hinge open - the safety catch can also affect trigger pressure if fired left handed if your hand pushes up against it as you squeeze -

I own a G3 (well, a PTR-91 anyways, same difference), and have shot an FAL and M-14 a good bit, so I can at least form an opinion not based on video games or hearsay, and based on what I've experienced it's a tie between the FAL and G3. I like the looks, ergonomics and accuracy of the G3 above all else but the FAL is a gentler shooter, the RDB action of the G3 runs hot and kicks hard while the FAL gas system can be dialed down and makes it a lot more controllable, though it doesn't match up in the looks department, there's just something about the FAL's lines that I don't like, I can't pin it down specifically. I want to love the M14 and technically I do (I love _all_ guns equally, I don't discriminate😉) but it's definitely not going to win against guns like the G3 or FAL, the controllability and accuracy issues and lack of modularity are Debbie downers. It's a beautiful rifle though...

You're argument that because US adopted the m14 and not the FAL they developed the m16 sooner and spread the intermediate assault rifles in the battle rifle loving west is asinine. FAL was originally an intermediate cartridge assault rifle that the rest of NATO wanted. It was upcalibered to .308 due to American insistence that NATO adopts a full rifle cartridge. If not for the Americans the west would have modern assault rifles as a main infantry weapon from the early 50s.

The wood (beautiful feel and lookl stocks and furniture were ok, the bakelite furniture ok, but the synthetic ones really nice. The G3 i found to be a bit finicky and the mags a bit of a problem. I've owned a G3. I didn't like it.. It was heavy, had a heavy trigger, the rifle was not terribly accurate, and the roller design made reloading .308 a non-option. I have friends who have M1A1s - and their complaint is that you have to put a lot of money into them, in order to make them accurate - or they can be finicky.. I now own an FAL ( my second one ) and - it's pure love. It's accurate ( my newest 18" rifle from DSA can shoot 1 MOA with 168 gr reloads ), it's reliable ( with metal magazines ), and while it does have some weight to it - it does come in lighter configurations. Thus, I am quite affectionate regarding the FAL. Second choice would be the G3, and 3rd would be the M1A1.

I like seeing other people's opinions. I've just started my collection a year ago or so. So I really only have a custom built AR15 and a couple of handguns. I like seeing why people come to their opinions regarding guns I consider purchasing.

Between these 7.62x51 Assault Rifles I would go for the G3 because you can get derivatives of the platform in 9mm MP5 5.56x45 HK33. Since you're from Canada this is simply comparing a G3 to a C1 SLR Canadian FN FAL

For me Fal .....as it is easier to load( compare to the far reach G3 charging handle ), and M14 is definitely not my choice as it has a lot of openings which mean higher chance for the ingress of dust and mud into the mechanism prone to malfunction...........

Great comparison. I do really love the fn fal a little more then the hk g3. The Belgian army did have an interesting dmr/sniper variant of the fn fal. They used their old . model 1949 scopes on them and made some small changes to the rifle.

I've got a DSA SA-58 IBR 18" with a chunky muzzle brake. Easily the nicest shooting battle rifle I've shot. Extremely controllable, flat shooting, little felt recoil. I love it. That being said, I grew up on an M16, so the magazine reload and bolt release ergonomics still feel just not quite right. Plus even with a fluted barrel and only an optic, she's HEAVY. But all that could be excused if it was accurate... which it isn't. 2 to 2.5" groups with regular M80 ball, and with match grade it's just touching 1.5" on a good day. But I love it and would take it over literally any other battle rifle.

Just a retired Army Grunt here, I own all the semi-auto rifles in your topic and I graduated from a school that used the M-21 rifle and ART scope. I love the M-14 platform but….I’d grab my FAL and feel confident that it won’t let me down. Reasons? The recoil impulse is a lot tamer and the adjustable gas regulator allows me to use any type of .308/7.62 ammo. For the 5.56 category, I’ll go with the AR-15 platform with an XM-177E2 carbine.

If I had my pick I would take a select fire, just to have the extra capability. I have fired a semi auto g3 several time, and have some time behind a full auto FAL and scar 17s. They where surprisingly controllable. And it's always nice to have more capability.

Seems like the FAL has the most optimal operation with the locking bolt on the last round. If you want to be practical, the FAL seems like the best choice but I see a lot of people love the G3. As much as I love the M14 and would definitely rely on it in the field, I have my eyes set on that nice German piece. Would like to shoot them first though.

My favorite is SIG SG 510-1 in 7.5x55. I also shot with G3, M14 and Galil all in 7.62x51, but nothing felt better than SG 510. Iron sights were great but once you put on a scope it turns into top notch DMR, was more acurate than H&K SR9. Only downside is that cases gets scratched after shooting, tehnically you can still handload them but I don't do that and i dont find ammo to be particularly expensive. Oh, and I almost forgot to add that the gun was only 735 USD.

I will add that commonwealth FALs had 30 rounder options technically. The L4 Bren had 30 round magazines that were 100% compatible with commonwealth pattern FALs. And they can be modified to work in other FALs as well.

FN FAL, G1 - FN FAL, Heckler & Koch G3, are assault riffles with big bullets, good stopping power, stable fire rate on semi & decent full auto, manageable recoil, decent accuracy, M-14 is the true battle rifle, very good stopping power, stable fire rate on semi but bad not full auto, more recoil then the M1, very accurate Both have good bayonets

On his website Larry Vickers lists the FAL has his favorite legacy main battle rifle but notes that the G3 is the most robust. In the weapon trials the US Picatinny Arsenal found that the G3 was the most reliable of all the battle rifles in mud and dust tests as well as it could be rebuilt more times than the FAL and the M14.
@GeorgiaBoy1961

The G3 is so brutally tough and durable that it is even tougher and more-difficult to break than an AK47, and that's already an amazingly robust weapon. G3s were popular, according to military histories about that time, in various insurgencies and 'bush wars' in Africa in the 1960s-1970s, since many of the mercenaries and other untrained fighters didn't always perform cleaning and field maintenance as they ought to have done. And Africa is tough on equipment anyway, even when it is well cared for.

as a FAL Guy, I think the G3 is neat. I think the FAL is better, but If G3 guys and FAL guys can agree on one thing, its that the M14 is the worst of the 3 western battle rifles.
