The best oil for the Jeep 4.0
This is a reply email I got from Shell when I asked about ZDDP content of the new formula Rotella
Thank you for your interest in Shell products.
Our Rotella T4 15W-40 (CK-4) contains about 1200 ppm of zinc and 1100 of phosphous. These are the components of the ZDDP for anti-wear protection.
Rotella T4 15W-40 (CK-4) is generally recommended for older flat tappet cam motors.
Do not buy STP oil treatment for the purpose of Zinc or ZDDP additive. I made this mistake after reading the 15oz bottle stating it's first ingredient is Zinc.
I later found out from STP there is only 5ppm of ZDDP

Hello, Jeepers My 1994 Cherokee sport which I've owned for the last 14 years, since 175,000 miles. It now has 391,000 miles and is running strong. As a mechanic, I changed the timing chain kit and front seal, at one of the water pump changes was 275,000. I baby my jeep and plan to go past 500,000 miles. I have refurbed complete steering linkages. with the insane prices of new vehicles, I may keep it to 1,000,000 miles. I use Rotella oil always.

I did an add a leaf, billstein shocks, coils up front, sway bushings and links and rewelding wallowed lower track bar mount combined with an alignment (now that the vehical was properly sprung) nzd that got my 96 handling nice at 230k. I still see a lot of XJs banging around my town but just cause the drivetrain lasts a loooong time dont mean the steerage and suspension is immortal too.

STP High mile 10w 30, going 230,000 I have no doubt this stuff saved my 4.0 and boosted its life. When I first got it the valves sounded like a 7.3 and had small timing noise, after my first oil change with it a year ago sounds like it just stepped out of the factory, the only problem I have with it is that for high mile oil it only lasts about 5k.

If someone wants to stick with the 10W30 weight from the manaul they Make a Rotella T4 10W30. Tractor Supply carries it for about 13ish dollars a Gallon. Any HD diesel oil should still retain higher levels of ZDDP. Wal Mart's Super Tech HD Diesel Oil (15w40) has a nice additive package as well. I run regular oil analysis and have tried different HD diesel oils and Rotella and Super Tech have so far had the highest levels of ZDDP. Mobil Delvac has had the lowest so far with Zinc levels of 889 PPM and Phosphorus levels of 659ppm. Supertech 1089 and 898. Rotella T (10w30 and 15w40 were about the same) 1109 and 930. I ran some Delo at some point but can't find an oil analysis in my records for it right now. Edit-these numbers are from oil analysis on used samples not new oil.

Rotella is good. But zinc levels are diminishing because diesels have cats and particulate filters. I always ran penzoil hi milage it has zink additives. That is dwindling because of gov mandates. Hi levels of zink will mess up o2 sensors and cats thats why car manufacturing introduced roller cams. The 4.0 stopped in early 2000's to the V6 with roller cam. Comp cams sell zink additive in pints add that to any oil and beware alot of oil is half synthetic.which is for late model tite clearance engines.

Hi Ronnie, just curious, if I were to get Rotella for my 99 xj should I look into getting a different type of oil filter for it or is it ok to use the standard mopar filters? My brother sold it to me and it had a pretty noticeable lifter tap. Now I don’t really make a whole lot of money so I haven’t been able to take it to a shop but I ended up getting a little scared because the check engine light came on and I should have gone to get the code checked but I was nervous to put more miles on it when it came on. Mind you this is my first car. So I got to thinking, my brother did say it needed an oil change, and because of my work schedule it’s been hard to find any time to get it to a shop to get the new filter and oil done properly so during my break I decided to change the oil myself. Well, I failed to look into the fact I needed a special wrench to get the filter out so I just changed the oil and not the filter. But when I went to start her up again the light wasn’t on anymore. So I’m hoping I didn’t end up knocking a sensor loose or anything else because I was trying to see if I could get the filter off by hand but the thing just didn’t move. Any ideas? It would mean a lot I want my xj to last a loooong time.
@RavenRedwood
@RavenRedwood Год назад
I'm sure you figured it out since this post but for anyone else who might be wondering the same: Since you're replacing the filter don't be afraid to damage the old one. Any pipe wrench or channel locks that can fit around it will do. If there isn't room, though, as is the case with the XJ and that stupid leaky 90* adapter, I have used a rubber tie-down strap many times. The cheap ones that you may often see on the side of the road with the s-hooks on the ends. Take out the hooks, wrap around the filter and fold over so it bites on itself. Voila, budget filter wrench. And don't forget to check for the old seal so you don't double-gasket the filter!

Amsoil ZRod has high zinc for your flat tappet cam engine. The 4.0 and 4.2L were designed to run 10W30 motor oil and viscosity matters as does the PPM of Zinc. Yes, Amsoil is a full synthetic but it has the PPM of Zinc needed in the right weight the engine was designed for AND you can run their synthetic longer than the Rotella. You will cause serious additional wear to the bearings and valve train every time you start your engine, slower oil drain to the sump, 2 or 3 degrees more heat because that oil was not formulated with your 4.0 or 4.2 in mind… sure it’ll run it.., but your engine will wear the components mentioned above.
