First open G song I learned was " Wild Horses" which naturally led me to other open G stuff by the Stones. Since then its been fun to transpose other artists work into open G and the resonance and drone you get rally transforms the feel of these songs. Even simple stuff like Walker Brothers "No Regrets" or The Kinks "Waterloo Sunset" completely transform. Moving on , some minor chords are a nightmare but they are on the neck somewhere!!

Great choices including your own two. Started playing slide when I tore my bicep tendon and couldn’t fret. Placed guitar in open G on a table and never looked back. Tuning 6th string to a G (replaced with an A gauge string) to avoid that D, and the double G has some nifty uses. Keep em coming Double D.
@doubledsrockschool
@doubledsrockschool Год назад
Thank Maxy! I got used to the top D string, and I use it to accentuate the V chord in a blues with that nice low D on the top string. It takes more control not to flub the notes on the low string. It would be fun to try the double G trick. I bet it sounds really rich and full. Cheers!

@@doubledsrockschool Anytime man.. I am just an old amateur rocker myself (mostly drums n bass). But I know a good riff when I hear it. Also, I think 99.9% of the time a musician plays their own riffs the best, because it is an expression of themselves. This comes through in the music IMHO. Like When shrEddie Van Halen played Eruption or John Bonham played Moby Dick. Sublime :)

Your stuff sounds good DD and so does your guitar. Do u get your sustain from the pickups or amp?
@doubledsrockschool
@doubledsrockschool Год назад
Thank you, Kenneth. I usually create sustain using gain-staging. I don't get to turn my amp up in my little studio loud enough to get power amp tube compression. I have a Dr.Z Airbreak attenuator that is set at about 40%, then I use a compressor pedal, usually a Keeley or an SP compresor set to a mild compression, which I plug into 2, mid-gain overdrives set to taste. The light gain stages add up to make an almost infinite sustain. Using gain-staging, you get great guitar-feedback notes at a very reasonable volume. Of course, good pick-ups helps and so does having a good set-up on your guitar. It all counts. But I always use gain staging to go a good sound without going deaf.

All I have ever played in is open G. I need to explain a bit. I build cigar box guitars. they are usually tuned in open G. I can't seem to get the hang of any instrument built by anybody else. So three string guitars for me. Also I came here to find some songs I might be able to play Instead I found that my own riffs and musics (NW whitewater river blues )are just as good as any other as long as I am having fun and people and tappen their toes. Fender’s QC was all over for these - coincidence that a load of staff got laid off? I persisted and ended up with a 2nd one that plays and sounds beautifully, but still wasn’t perfect (truss rod loosened off only gave .010”, also slight scar on the fretboard) I complained and got some money knocked off. The fretwork was good on mine and I’ve done numerous 3 hour live jams playing with it - the narrow tall frets were an adjustment from jumbos but I simply had to become more accurate in the lower frets, I’ve no issue with the pickups to be honest.

Thank you! I am glad you liked the video. You are exactly right about the intro. Strum the open chord followed by the other 2. It's a fun tune, especially when you play it in open G. Way back in the when I first started, we all played it in standard tuning and I wondered why it never sounded quite right. Now we know... lol.

You are a well accomplished player --thankyou for the prompt reply -and valuable info --now I know why this song never sounded quite right in STD tuning----I was 19 in 1969-- when I bought this vinyl record by the Stones ---I live in Central Africa---used to build my own guitars --Now at 74 its difficult to keep up with shredding -----thankyou again -- @@doubledsrockschool

Thanks! I am glad you like it. I am going directly into a Universal Audio Dream 65 pedal. I have it set to the Oxford speaker, the amp is set to D-tex with the volume around 2 o'clock and the boost in a similar setting. EQ is at noon and a just a touch of reverb. What's your favorite Open G song?

I love hearing this tuning with a heavier guitar tone. I'm exploring the possibility of playing Doom Metal with Open G, just because of the inverted 5th power chords. They make the guitar sound like it is tuned much lower than it actually is.
@doubledsrockschool
@doubledsrockschool 2 месяца назад
That's a great idea! I am sure it would sound wicked! You can even tune the high E to E instead of D. You have a heavy de-tuned bottom end but standard tuning from the 4th to 1st string. Ripping leads without the fingering change.

Faithful by Pearl Jam Daughter is actually in "double open G", in that the 6th is tuned up to another G, not down to D. That gives it a fuller sounder, with a distinct tone because of the high tension on the 6th string, also invites a more aggressive strumming approach.
@doubledsrockschool
@doubledsrockschool 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for the heads up!! I'll have to try that.
@MrScrofulous
@MrScrofulous 9 месяцев назад
@@doubledsrockschool I'm used to playing it in a very different position too, fingering the 4th and fifth strings rather than the third and fourth. Your version is very "polite". Using the heavier wound strings gives a massive fat sound, with the open 6th tuned to G providing a strong pedal tone you seem to be missing.
@JohnStrandt

The number one all-time open G song is Honky Tonk Women. You completely overlooked it. Also, even though I play Daughter the same way as you, they played it on SNL and it was capoed on about the fifth, and it may not be open G.
