How do budget hiking layers compare to my best? Here I compare Decathlon's base layers, convertible pants, and insulation layers to what I have from REI, Merino Tech, Columbia, Outdoor Vitals, and Mountain Hardwear!

What's your best budget gear find?
@jakeva9802
Synthetic base layers from Walmart. 5 years and still going.

I think it's said Ke chu ah ;P But that's just going off others. I got a cheap fleece from them years ago before they were known here at all, and was shocked at how comfy they are, warm yet wicking, and fairly lightweight.

From Decathlon I have both their down jacket and some fleece sweaters which I vouch for to this day for their value. Both have held up and for the price you more than get their worth
@Carftymk
the Z is silent in forclaz and quechua is not a french word... i'm surprised you haven't heard of quechuas with your religious background
@natlovell122
Nice comparisons Doug. There are so many options these days when it comes to gear. I have a decathlon down jacket (got it on sale for $25) and one of their light fleeces ($10 on sale) and they’ve both been great.

I have had my Forclaz down hoodie for over a year. It's comfortable and effective as a top layer when used in our Michigan winters.
@Plummchild
little tip: Magellan sells 30$ (sued to be 15$ but whatevs) convertible fishing pants that I use as summer hiking pants and while they arnt super durable, they are really nice for those of us that like to wear pants even when its really hot
@DarrenYee
I have an old Old Navy micro grid hoodie that I picked up for $20 that I still use. I also have a Uniglo down puff jacket that is crazy light I picked up for $60 about 10 years ago and is still holding up. I am also testing out some budget merino wool socks I found on Amazon, 6 pairs for $25 compared to one pair of Darn Tough socks. I bought a pair of injinji toe socks, but I have really narrow feet and I feel it's kind of a hassle to thread each toe into each pocket and after the first day for get it, lol.

I've been a big fan of the Kuhl Renegade Convertible pants. Beefy stud button on front. Zippered sides with cuff snaps. Not sure what they weigh though. On the lightish side.
@ervinslens
Lovely presentation my friend 👏
