Extech, Ideal, Greenlee, and Eaton have all exited the AFCI breaker testing market. In this video, I will compare these two remaining testers.
Amprobe INSP-3 - amzn.to/2XLLMaC
Klein Tools RT-310 - amzn.to/31yeCMV

I'm a commercial electrician and our company uses that Klein RT310 AFCI/GFCI tester. After multiple AFCI test trips the Klein gets too hot and the yellow LED above the AFCI button flashes repeatedly until it cools down, just as shown in your video. The tester will work again after the tester cools down. So, it's not so much a fault with the Klein as much as the process breakers trip. Klein should label the LED's as "Temp!" or something. Maybe Klein could add a fan but that would use more batteries and have to turn on after each test. We use two Klein testers speed up the processe after completing a new panel/circuit installation.

The klein one is likely uses a real circuit to simulate an arc until the breaker trips while the amprobe is likely trying to send out a fake signal that is intended to trick an AFCI into tripping. Problem is most AFCIs are designed to try to be more immune to electrical noise which is what the fake signal is.

Great video. The amprobe model has never worked reliably, right from it's very inception years ago. Why Amprobe continues to offer this product is beyond my comprehension. They can't fix the problem because they don't manufacture it, the OEM is a company in Taiwan, Appa electronics.

shieldcracker By them keeping this product on the market, I have lost some respect for Fluke/Amprobe.

@@MultiMeterChannel Amprobe has become the Fluke's outlet for selling rebranded not so great stuff. Amprobe had a great reputation, at one point stronger than Fluke. When Amprobe was sold and moved out of NY things went downhill, swallowed by big brother they lost their identity and independence. I wish the industry demanded and embrace an instrument that could test the integrity of branch circuits and OCPD (including AFC, GFI). Could Klein fill Amprobe's shoes.

I used the Klien to test suites in a condo, and it messed with me. Decided to use a load to make sure it had the proper neutral to the breaker. Tester would not trip at one moment, then I would go back a half hour later, and it would trip. Drove me nuts.

I would have liked the testers to be able to give you also the time to trip and current trip as well. This would allow some sense about UL classifications rating - class A, etc. I have the Klein tester and in my opinion it’s the best so far out there as well it does well on the AFCI testing with dual function Leviton GFCI/AFCI receptacles . Indeed it trips both the Leviton AFCI/GFCI receptacle and GE AFCI breaker at the panel simultaneously. Which is good to know things are working as intended. Much of this type of testing I actually use multifunction testers fluke 1664fC (there are megger equivalents) which give much more information than these simpler testers.

The breaker manufacturers, and UL, don’t even considers these testers. They call them “indicators”, and not testers. These are intended for home owners, or home inspectors, not for lab testing.

I’m using a fluke 1654b Multi Function Tester. Absolutely amazing . I have tried testing several brands of combination AFCI breakers and dual function AFCI’S. You can adjust the GFCI (RCD) trip settings from 5 ma up 650ma . Works great ! It does not test arc faults , but for ex: it will trip a standard combination SQD AFCI hom at 50 mA. Some manufacturers have 50 ma, some have 30ma , dual function have 5ma built in to the AFCI’s . Siemans have removed the 30 ma GFCI protection on their newer style combination AFCI’s breakers , making more space making the breaker physically smaller I suppose? FYI , The Klein tester is a decent tester and will test most AFCI breakers for ARCS. It will trip GFCI’s at 5ma, and 30ma. It only has 30 ma GFCI trip button capability and to my knowledge it won’t test a standard AFCI that has 50 ma built in. Too many times it’s aground fault tripping the AFCI and not an arc fault . Also note, that power quality can effect the performance of electronic circuits . Voltage drop could be on contributing factor to nuisance tripping .

Thank very good video. I got a question to all electrician. Is there any tester that can pinpoint the Arc location when the breaker trips couple times a week? How come manufactory sales the breaker but not tester/ tracer design to find the arc location in the wall or electrical box.

Can you make a video show how to use ideal wire tracer , the other videos are too short

Dj Rulaz raul IDEALINDUSTRIESUSA I would love to do a review of the Ideal Wire Tracer, but I don’t have one. If Ideal would be willing to loan me one long enough for me to evaluate it, I would be happy to. I have copied them in the reply to your request, so maybe they will see it, and loan me one.

I see what you mean about the Amprobe not doing good. I have one of the Extech CT80’s I bought 3 or 4 years ago and haven’t had any issues with it that I know of. I’m curious how it would fair to the same test set up?
@MultiMeterChannel
@MultiMeterChannel 3 года назад
Justin T Couldn’t get my hands on one of those CT-80’s to try, but that was taken off the market a long time ago. The Amprobe failed almost every test I threw at it. Even common mode voltage, and resistance measurement. I couldn’t bring myself to do such a negative review, so I just focused on the breaker testing, and left it at that. I’m guessing Amprobe won’t be sending anymore product after that review though.

I guess it just goes to show the worse fluke gets the worse their counterparts get. I use to love Fluke and Amprobe but over the last 6 to 8 years both compainy’s products went down hill fast.

So if a carry around an 85 foot extension cord and use it with the Klein tool, then everything should work? lol Seems strange.

Interesting idea! If we could find out what value is important (voltage drop, increased impedance, increased capacitance, etc) in a long cable length that makes the Klein work better, then we could build a small adaptor to accomplish the same thing?

So I bought the Klein RT310 about a year ago. Did not have any AFCI breakers, however, it performed well on GFCI breakers. I just did an home addition and installed a Siemens 125 amp plug on neutral panel sub panel . Wired one Siemens plug on neutral AFCI breaker to a two outlet/ double gang box with 12/2 romex to test it with the Klein. my house has all new wires from the power pole to the outlet (completely replaced everything) and it would not trip?...the panel breaker test button worked, but the Klein was unable to trip the AFCI breaker?...replaced the batteries and still no go. Any help would be appreciated.

I tested it with three Siemens dual function breakers and it tripped all three as desired, and the breakers all showed the AFCI fault code on reset. There should be a slight buzzing sound when the test is activated. Also, if the breaker does not trip the arc goes on for longer and the device overheats more quickly and has to cool down.
@rrussell39

So by Amprobe continuing to sell this faulty product there are people paying to replace expensive AFCI breakers because they are told they are faulty. Good deal for AFCI manufacturers. They should have already pulled this product.
