to me I think Psyduck should be a 5 when it comes to Groudon as the duck has the ability Cloud Nine which let's him ignore the weather thus his water attack's aren't weakened by Groudon's Drought
I played the original back in highschool. Now that this new one came out, I've been getting nostalgic and wanted to get it. I'm planning on starting with Cubone with Totodile as my partner because that's what I did in the original. The game said I'm a lonely person and gave me Cubone. I never noticed Cubone too much before that, but ever since then, it's been special to me. 'Cause the game's reasoning was on point haha Totodile I picked for coverage and because Gold was my original Pokémon game, so I love it more than Squirtle!
Bulbasaur is being slept on with it's access to Sleep Powder! I linked it with an attack, and the bosses never hit me even if they got revived next turn, as Bulba could just use it next turn again. For fun, I tried to solo post-game Rayquaza with it (no crazy stat buffs), and Sleep Powder clutched me through it.
I know this comment was forever ago and you might not remember, but I’m curious how you got so close in a solo run when he just launches you to the edge of the map constantly? You have to be 1 tile away to use sleep powder
Did you forget that Pikachu got grass knot as a starting move? Together with nasty plot (thank you Gulpin!) I was able to SMASH Groudon as Pikachu thanks to Grass Knot being super effective and Groudon being super heavy. Pikachu should've gotten higher than a 1 here for this reason.
"Pick Squirtle, it can learn every Ice-type move from Gulpin's tutor system." Uh, Gulpin's Tutor system isn't available until you beat the game and costs 9000 a pop, so no, Squirtle is not the best. You can only rely on TMs you get from Pokemon Square, so Cubone is by far better because of Lightningrod making Zapdos and Mt. Thunder a joke and, with Rapid Bull's Eye, Bone Rush can pretty much do a ton of damage to Groudon. Just saying.
You're correct on everything you said. However, I believe Cubone is better as the main protagonist, mainly because most of his moves only affect the enemy directly in front of him. That's where partners like Squirtle shine, they can still attack from either far away or directly behind you with the many ranged moves they learn. He gets very early access to bubble, water gun and water pulse + blizzard if you're lucky finding the tm.
It seems to me you’re just ranking them based on their type rather than their potential movepool. Skitty, for example example, could have thunderbolt or blizzard. But you never mentioned that and just place her as average
I find Psyduck to make the best partner, personally. Cloud Nine is a game-changer, no if's, and's, nor but's about it. Not having to deal with weather has that big of an impact. Likewise, it's really not that hard to get a good ice-type TM early in the game (I've gotten two blizzard TM's in two in-game days of starting before), so Gulpin tutoring, while powerful, isn't always so strong (especially since you don't have immediate access to it). Finally, Psychic-type damage is a handy coverage type to have. With all of this, my team is Cubone (me) and Psyduck (partner) all the way.
My team was the other way around (me as Psyduck, with Cubone as helper), and yeah it's so great. Cloud Nine makes all the dungeons a real breeze (Sky Tower and it's varying climates comes to mind).
yea the weather can be downright nasty...especially later in the game and even post-game when sand and hail become more and more common along with sun (rain not as much as it tends to be oddly rare), so Cloud Nine's ability to bypass weather is very handy especially when you rematch Groudon & Rayquaza post-game since it let's you bypass Desolate Land and Delta Stream

Skitty Bulbasaur have great status moves and moves in general Charmander and cyndaquil have smokescreen which is broken basically u have 4 pokemon that work for partners and the main pokemon

Eevee i think is very undervalued. Having refresh on it to keep you from ever needing things like heal seeds and combo it with small stomach or pp pouch and it makes a really good support-type mon which is great because the main one usually does most of the damage. And in post game you can evolve it how ever you want - i chose sylveon
As for my personal opinion for best partners: 1st: Psyduck; I already said why 2nd: Squirtle; 3rd: Totodile; 4th:Pikachu; obs: So it seems that bottom 5(but it gets better for the grass starters post-game) are the grass starters+ Machop and Meowth
Something that I think the two of you kind of forgot is that move advantage isn't the only thing to consider. One of the reasons Treeko is my favorite starter is not just because of the main games, but with the original Blue Mystery Dungeon. So do call me biased if you'd like. My point is Treeko has access to not only a Multi Hitting move, but a RANGED move (This being Bullet Seed). Board placement is just as (sometimes even more) important than type-advantage and disadvantage. After all, what's the point of having a super effective move, if you can't hit your target? Most bosses don't have ranged attacks and will have to move towards you to hit. (Thank you Quick Seeds). And if you move just right, you'll be outside of even their ranged attacks. (A major exception would be moves like Groudon's Earthquake, but it's still smart to move out of the way of other Attacks.) Keeping this in mind, will also greatly effect one's choice in which Pokémon is the Best Starter and Partner.
In my opinion the best partners in no particular order are: - *Squirtle:* great sniper with tons of ranged moves (water gun, bubble, water pulse, hydro pump, blizzard, ice beam) and weather control with rain dance which *can* be useful in certain dungeons. Ideal moveset: hydro pump, blizzard, water pulse + filler. - *Psyduck:* same reason, great sniper with the main ranged moves (blizzard, hydro pump, water pulse, signal beam) plus having access to tail whip + fury swipe combo very very early. Also cloud nine ability is a blessing. Ideal moveset: hydro pump, blizzard, fury swipe + filler. - *Charmander:* the best fire sniper (ember, flame burst, flamethrower and heat wave on late game) and also ground immunity when evolved which enables team members to use earthquake. Ideal moveset: the mentioned moves + filler. - *Chikorita:* very very underrated partner, she's an amazing sniper with ranged razor leaf and 2 room hitting moves on late game with petal blizzard + frenzy plant. She also supports the party on the early game (reflect + light screen) and in the late game with the key move aromatherapy, which has saved me countless times. Ideal moveset: razor leaf, petal blizzard, frenzy plant, aromatherapy. EDIT: I forgot about *Pikachu,* which has some decent tools too, specially agility which heavily buffs the party, thunder wave for bosses, discharge as room hitting move and quick attack to attack even behind the protagonist.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Ancient Power on Chikorita. That does at least give Chikorita a chance against Moltres and Zapdos. I can’t remember if Articuno and Rayquaza are weak to rock or not.
but even with ancient power....chikorita is still very helpless in this game as it just doesnt learn that many useful moves during the whole game....plus ancient power requires it to get up close and personal for the legendary flyers which leaves it as the mercy of their flying type attacks
Chikorita should be at least a 2 against the legendary birds and skarmory because it gets ancient power as a starting move and the omni boost can come in clutch
Sorry but this Rating is fundamentally flawed. You didn't take all the status moves into consideration like sleep powder on Bulbasaur which TRIVIALIZES every Boss Fight in the game. Furthermore did you Rank mons with non Stab super effective moves higher but in PMD Stab > Super Effective. Such a list for the main story is also kind of useless because that part of the game is easy for every Pokemon combination and only after Rayquaza the real game starts. At that point you want access to room clearing moves that only hit the enemy. Squirtle/Blastoise doesn't get access to a Stab one which makes it place nowhere near the top picks. Swampert, Marowak and Sceptile rank way higher for their respective access to Earth Power/Frenzy Plant. The objectively Best starters are Meganium, Venusaur and the Fire starters as they get access to 2 room clearing STAB moves in Petal Blizzard, Frenzy Plant, Heat Wave and Blast burn and of those top tier starter Bulbasaur is the highest for its access to Sleep Powder which trivializes every Bossfight in the game.
My starter was Machop, and while i do agree that he can struggle with alot of bosses, i feel like you kinda underestimated him. Here's why: Skarmory: Machop's main stab Fighting moves may only be neutral effective against Skarmory, but you did overlook one move that Machop can learn: Fireblast. Machop may not have the highest special attack but Fireblast is still a very powerful move against Skarmory since it's weak to fire. Plus, you can just drink a few Calciums and the low special attack won't even be a problem. Team Meanies: With team Meanies you're completely right. Even with Neutral hitting moves Fireblast and Rockslide they are still a pain to fight against as Machop. Machop does get Knock Off fairly early on but that's only effective against Gengar. The Bird Trio: Again, while Machop does struggle against their flying typing, he does get access to Rockslide and against Articuno he has Fireblast. Plus, Moltres has Firespin, which can trap you. But, if Moltres does trap you, Guts gets activated since being trapped counts as a statis in this game, which means a big power boost to Rockslide. Rayquaza: Again, Rockslide. But, Machop also gets access to Dual Chop late in the game, which is super effective against not just Rayquaza but a good portion of Sky Tower's residents such as Altaria, Flygon and Salamence as well as letting you hit the occasional Dusclops at least neutrally. In conclusion: Okay, yeah Machop is still pretty bad against these bosses. But again, not completely helpless just because of resisted stab moves.
Totodile and Cubone were my pick. With Ice Fang covering for the grass type weakness plus freezing/flinching and Cubone’s Lightning Rod ability made my team solid.
Yall aren’t taking TMs into enough consideration. For example you gave Machop a 1 vs Moltres when he gets Rockl Slide via TM. Even if he is weak to STABs, he still is hitting Moltres for 4x effectiveness with the highest base attack of all starters. Vs Team Meanies, all water types should get a 4 by default since they get Blizzard to hit everyone alongside Cubone and Skitty
For me personally Eevee was a good partner for any situation during the main plot due to her Adaptability ability as well as her water-type evolution Vaporeon being potentially OP as heck during the post-game due to a move combo of Helping Hand, Refresh, Blizzard, and either Hydro Pump, Waterfall, or Surf plus the Water Absorb ability she gets after evolving into Vaporeon makes many of the post-game dungeons that focus on water types, and post-game bosses that are water-type or part water-type not a pain in the butt.
I'm psyduck and choose Pikachu as my partner; question: Does Pikachu perform better as a partner, or is it about the same with solo? P.S: I think Pikachu and Psyduck are good partners, Cloud Nine+Pikachu's coverage means that I only really strugled in Lapis Cave(I hate that place)
After +100hours id say the starter doesnt matter, you just need to get an altaria (swablu) asap and thats by far the most convenient way to beat/ play the game
No one should have that much trouble with the Mankeys... they were my only failure with their spam fury swipes any Pokemon that doesn’t resist normal type attacks should be a 3 or below

Hey guys I have a little problem with squirtle because you can't be able to learn icy wind for squirtle until post game and by that time you would most likely already have ice beam so that is just one little problem with them but I have a solution. There are codes in Pokémon mystery dungeon and some of those codes contain very good Tms one of those Tms is ice beam now I forgot the code but just search it up on RU-vid I started with pikachu and squirtle and I beat skarmory in just 3 turns thanks to getting thunderbolt and ice beams from the codes I just found the code for ice beam it is XMK5JQQM

My cubone and squirtle run went way better than my pikavee run. Teaching Cubone smack down is a game changer. Also, move tutor isn’t til point game so don’t know why that was a factor.
Yeah I live under a rock. Just came about this game by chance haha xD get on my level! I played the original mystery dungeon and had blast with that, so I got myself a switch for this game. Forgot what I played as, but I remember having Chikorita as my partner.
For me it has to be cubone, not for the power against bosses, but just for Bonemarang. The ability to have a 10 tile peircing move early on, that with the right rare qualities can effect anything with a x1 or greater power and guarenteed to hit both times is just broken.
And the worst partner is... Bulbasaur... Because the poor buddy is weak to so many of the bosses... Imagine playing the game as a Machop/Bulbasaur Pair... Good Luck with that! Hard Mode engaged!

My problem with this video is that, in mystery dungeon games, you can’t really define how good a Pokémon is based on how it’s type matches up against a boss... I mean yeah bosses are there but you can just use two blast seeds against skarmory to win or keep some recover seeds and orbs to take down bosses easily. What’s more important than that is how well a Pokémon does in DUNGEONS, where almost all of your time is going to be spent
Side note I think this video is also gravely underestimating the movesets that these Pokémon get. Bulbasaur having sleep powder (and bullet seed depending on the game) and treecko getting agility are amazing even for just boss killing. Squirtle may be good as a partner for speedrunning but in all other cases it’s pretty regular in comparison to others. Mystery dungeon moves and mechanics definitely make these Pokémon better than what you may think just on hypotheticals
