Steadtler graphite pencils is what I use most. This is a drawing demo on the 2B, 4B, and 6B so you can see the difference in each.

I've been watching "how to shade" type videos, and I get the point. I get kinda jealous when all these artists use fancy sletching tools when I only have a mechanical pencil and the eraser. I'm glad that I'm up to this level of sketching and shanding for my age, but I need a lot more practice. I wish I had some paints or some of those sketching pencils. I'm glad I found your videos.

Oh believe me, you DON'T need fancy materials. It's all about skills with any tools. Sure some tools will make it easier for certain things but nothing beats good skills.

+C'thulu TheGreat I use my mechanical pencil for light shading (0.5 HB) you just need to extend the lead more or less an inch which is really good if you need to shade a bigger areas

It also depends on how large you are drawing. Or how much you favour pure cross shading vs "tonal" shading. Mind you, lead holders are sometimes colloquially called mechanical pencils, in which case the lead would be the same with as the one of a traditional pencil.

I have done many sketches, your technique maintains the subtleness of tones that sets up for painting , very nice, I have a two finger glove that keeps me from smearing the graphite hard lines.

Recently bought a professional drawing kit and now I know what I can expect from it thanks to Art of Wei's RU-vid channel. I must add that although I knew about the pencil's grading scale, as a total newbie in the subject when I rode HB, 2H, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B in them I was totally confused since I did not know nothing about them... Until I saw this video. Now I know why drawing is an art.

I love your style. When I draw with graphite, I love to see the pencil stroke lines. A blending stump flattens the art for me. I don't want to be a Xerox machine.

The 4B looks better for the exterior eye but the 6B created a more realistic, smoother iris and pupil. Definitely see the benefit of combining them.

This was a great video! Thank you. There are concerns with erasing or lifting marks for the various leads, as well. In addition, using a blending stump makes a difference. Am I right? Or am I making too much of it?

+Jonathan Landwer Yes, blending stump will soften anything. It's harder to erase the softer and darker pencils. For erasing dark and soft marks, it's best to use a kneaded eraser. That the kneaded eraser, you just dab at it to lift the graphite off. You can't smear the graphite with an eraser.

I just subscribed today , and now i'm amazed. I mean , I usually paint , you know, using colours so much , and then I figured that ''man !! I have so much to learn, I can't even draw quickly along with doing it correct" , I can't even draw a face properly. Lead holders are also better for the environment :) The Staedtler mars technico lead holder is the best iv ever used personally although Koh I Noor have some good ones too.
