I have had several plants die during our summer drought. In this video I will be discussing what I replaced them with. I did use Turks cap, autumn sage, Mexican mint marigold, zexmenia, Rock rose, Texas Lantana, Mexican oregano, Texas kidneywood and pink skullcap.
In most cases, I did amend my soil using expanded shale

This summer was a definite challenge to my landscape plants, and me (also in 8B, central TX). A few plants hung in there, and most of those were natives, I believe (Mexican firebush, artemisia, trailing lantana, Texas sage, autumn sage...). But a few others just didn't make it, including a two-year old Mexican bush sage and also my lorapetalums that I planted last fall. I do want to plant zexmenia now as yours looks great! I find your channel very helpful! Thank you for sharing your gardening experience.

Hey neighbor! I totally want to try Mexican firebush. I’ve seen others share how resilient it was through this summer. I’m so glad I could offer some plant enabling…I mean inspiration😝 Happy gardening and thank-you for the compliment💗

Looking good! We replaced several plants today and heavily pruned one of our Texas Sage bushes that was hard hit. I have lots of Turk's Cap and Mexican Mint Marigold if you ever need more. My Turk's Cap does better when it has afternoon shade. That Rock Rose will spread like crazy. We had quite a bit in our yard several years ago. I took it out when we redid the backyard, but planted another today that I bought last week.

It’s good to know a master gardener! I will take you up on some of that Turks cap in the spring. Gradually reducing my lawn and I have my eye on another spot in my backyard that I will start preparing through winter. I heard the rock rose only lives a couple of years?

@@theplantninja-texasgardener Plenty of Turk's Cap to go around. It's been so long since we had the Rock Rose that I can't remember clearly, but I do remember it came up all over the place and I just kept digging them up and planting them around the yard. I didn't know better back then, but know now that I should have cut it back to the ground every year (I do my big pruning around Valentine's Day). I just let it grow and it was quite leggy. Hoping for better luck with the one I just planted from Grizzly's. Fall is definitely upon us. Our Autumn Blaze Maple is starting to turn and my Kajari Melon is starting to show the signs from a few chilly nights. Looking forward to all the promised rain this week. Digging holes to plant yesterday showed us how very dry it is in the parts of our yard that aren't irrigated. Looking forward to seeing you this week!

Hello, hope all is well. Thank you for sharing your garden plans. There was quite a bit of thought-provoking information in the video. Charlie looks like he is doing his part in the planning. I am presently trying to plan what to do with all my Hosta plants and peppers this winter. I am lost because this is my first year, but I am sure it will be a learning experience. Thank you and best wishes.

Hello my friend! Charlie is such a great little garden buddy! I don’t know much about hostas but they are perennials and should come back after winter dormancy. Your peppers may be more tender and need more protection. If we get a freeze, sometimes just putting an old towel down with a 5 gallon buck over your plant will save the day! Resist the urge to prune during winter unless things are looking mushy🙌

Glad to hear the channel is giving you good inspiration! Appreciate the constructive feedback. I’m learning creating content requires learning lots of skills beyond the content itself.

Hi, I believe we live in the same area of Texas. I was wondering where you plant shop? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Hey neighbor! Grizzly’s nursery in Nolanville primarily. When I can’t find what I need there I usually take a trip down to Austin at hit Barton springs nursery, the natural gardener, or shoal creek nursery.
