I have an X5 1T, and please note that in a temperate summer climate, with temperatures of about 30 deg C, the drive runs so hot that it is barely possible to touch it. As a consequence, it constantly throttles down and the actual speed is way less than advertised, for example now I see 119/209 MB/s. When it gets really hot, speeds can get as low as 50/70 MB/s, which is at the level of a micro SD card. I guess the problem is caused by the thermal design, there is a kind of magnesium part inside that is expected to act as a heat sink, but there might be a small air gap to the enclosure, so probably it does not transfer the heat very well. The major source of heat is the controller chip on the M.2 board. The flash memories are also hot. I had to disable alarms from the SMART monitoring program, since they constantly reported life threatening messages. All in all, I don't think the drive can live very long if running that hot. I ordered a large M.2 heat sink, and I plan to run the drive open, with the heat sink installed directly on the M.2 board. If this is not enough, the next step is to add a small fan. [Edit] The heat sink alone did not make a significant difference. I added a large fan on top of everything and now the reported 'Composite Temperature' is around 35 C / 95 F, which helped a lot, the drive runs at full speed most of the time, only during continuous writes it sometimes oscillates between 1980 MB/s to around 1200, which is anyway much better than without the fan. So, the X5 is nice looking, but performance is very sensitive to temperature. Personally I wouldn't buy another one now. :-(

Both NVMe and TB3 are PCI-Express based protocols so there is literally no logic required to to connect the two together. Including a NVMe to USB 3.X logic chip adds a good $30 to the cost of the manufacture of the device. Hence why it's at least $50 more than than the others.

Please turn off indexing in macOS on external drives as mine broke down due to heat because MacOS was non-stop indexing my external drive. It could be hardware issue on this drive, but turning this function off will help expand longevity of your drive
@tim3172
@tim3172 4 года назад
Just FYI there aren't actually 'faster chips' on the drive that function as cache. They're all (roughly) the same speed and space is segmented off of the QLC/TLC and the controller runs in SLC mode which sacrifices storage volume to accelerate writes. The amount segmented off is a percentage of the drive and the total cache volume decreases as the drive reaches its capacity. The only 'faster chips' on the drive would be the 256MB-1GB DRAM cache which is used for maintaining the partition table and for smoothing out NAND transactions. These aren't used to accelerate file transfers , though. Also TBW is the stated amount of information you can write while maintaining a warranty. It's not the point where it starts to fail unless it's listed as JEDEC endurance. The actual start of destruction is 2.5-3.5x higher than that, Intel stating their 1.2PBW (1200 TBW) drive going for 4.457PB before it starts to fail, for example. (TBW is like a 5 year/60,000 mile warranty, whichever comes first. You'd be incorrect to say a car with such a warranty would fail starting at 60,000 miles).
@MaxTechOfficial
@MaxTechOfficial 4 года назад
Thanks for the extra info! Just like car warranty's its nice to have a longer one and with less millage limits. The Lacie really excels at this. What would be the downside of a company setting the default SLC at 50GB like Samsung does compared to G Drive at 20GB. In comparison my Mac Pro's 1TB SSD is 70GB.

I've noticed other reviewers point out that having a faster SSD when editing video does not increase operational speed of the editing program. Buyers should be aware of this as they are expecting a huge performance boost by purchasing Thunderbolt SSD's which are much more expensive.
@edvardb8747
@edvardb8747 2 года назад
Can you elaborate? Does it max out at 400-500mb/s either way, when editing in a timeline, so there is no reason to buy drives that is faster than a Samsung t5 anyway? What about when the drive is full, will not faster ssds like these perform better?
@scottweaverphotovideo

Thank you for posting. Helps out a lot. I have had good look with G-Technology spinning drives and my friends had good luck with Lacie. Surprising about OWC. The Lacie being USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 compatible is good... Honestly I thought all Thunderbolt 3 was compatible with USB-C. So I had no idea. I have a 2014 MBP with Thunderbolt 2, so I haven’t head to learn about USBC vs Thunderbolt 3 yet. I have had good luck with slower SSD’s for 4K video like the Sandisk Ultra 3D for my Atomos Ninja V and even Sandisk USB3 drives that where surprisingly fast and reliable for my level.... and you can put them on a keychain. Not sure how rugged they are... but I try not to drop or damage any of my media. Yes, looking forward to your making a tear down DIY SSD combo. Sounds like a fun project.

Samsung for reliability coz I've been using their products for lots of years. When it comes to SSD storage, Samsung always comes in mind in terms of technology & quality. That G-Drive actually looks pretty nice. If I have to use a thunderbolt 3 storage, I'm all out for it so backward compatibility doesn't matter. That's similar to phone camera quality. If I take serious photos, I go for DSL or mirrorless.

I’m a photographer. I transfer large photo files, raw they’re about 125MB each. I transfer huge, often 100GB+, folders of image files mostly. Will that max the SLC cache of those drives? Or since it’s a bunch of smaller files, does the SLC cache not matter? I get my M1 Mac mini today, so I might wait till I can get something USB4.

pretty useful video, as usual, guys ;) thank you. this, again..comes to show that not all gadgets/products are created equal, and that the truth is in the small print. As for the external DIY NVMe video.. ...it would be great to know/test not only the ultimate drives for these performance benchmarks , in terms of read&write speeds, transfer rates...cache buffers..etc.... but also the small file/data performance, where the NAND drives usually excel. with this, i mean that..it would be great to see Crucial P1 and the Intels 660p drives performance....for eg..as they are VERY reliable and fast for everyday usage with small (1kb to 100kb) files, read & write. thanks again ;)

The orange LaCie NVMe SSD and the black LaCie Pro NVMe SSD have the exact same Seagate FireCuda 510 NVMe M.2 SSD in their enclosure! Only the Pro is equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port. Macbooks provide power to USB-C ports when the device is sleeping or hibernating (to charge your phone, etc.). On most Windows laptops this is an option to disable to save power but OSX requires more changes. https : // superuser . com / questions / 443184 / turn-off-usb-power-when-closing-macbook-lid (Remove spaces) to look and see if it's worth it to turn it off at the sacrifice of instant-on mode. running 'sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1' will disable that. Just FYI it’s pronounced “Luh-see”, not “lacy”.

ricky v Yeah, either they started as a French company or one of the founders was French, by my recollection.

Would suggest you mention the prices up-front as this is likely the most important aspect of a product for most of us. Cheers

Could you edit 4k files from the LaCie directly? Is it fast enough?
@MaxTechOfficial

Oh yes it should be! (make sure you have a Thunderbolt 3 port to plug it into) It might even be fast enough with USB-C speeds depending on the video codec you're editing (Not 100% sure) -Vadim

Dude your LaCie pronunciation is killing me. It’s Lah See, not Lacey. It’s a French phrase that means The Company.

This review is so bad, my head is spinning. Everything is about sequential read/writes. Wtf! What about random r/w? Imagine you want to make portable, your VMs, your databases, programming projects. In all those instance, random read is by far the metric you need to care the most. Also the ratios between plots in the charts are misleading, creating the wrong impressions. For instance a 16 sec diff (between first and second) appears twice a large compared to a 27 sec diff (between second and third). I would not trust this channel.

I bought 3 G Drives. All failed. Don't touch it with a shit pole. The worst of the worst. I don't know if this dude gets paid for his reviews, but do not purchase G-Drives of any kind. Samsung to me regardless of cost is the safest or perhaps Lacie. OWC? Are you kidding me?
